Er war an der Ausarbeitung des metrischen Maßsystems beteiligt und bestimmte zusammen mit Lavoisier die Dichte des Wassers. "Napoleon. ordered him to write a textbook of physics for the newly instituted lycees. This book was outstanding for its clear, methodical exposition of physics, although mathematical treatment of problems was again lacking. Like most of his contemporaries, Haüy adhered to Newton's corpuscular theory of light and to the theory that heat was caused by a 'caloric matter.' His own contribution to physics consisted in his researches on double refraction in crystals, on pyroelectricity in crystals and on piezoelectricity. Haüy's 'Traité' brought him appointment to the Legion of Honor in 1803" (DSB). - Vorsätze mit gestochenem Exlibris und Widmung von alter Hand. Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig bzw. gebräunt. Krusenstern, Ivan Federovich:
Paris: Gide fils, 1821. xii,418; [4],531pp. Contemporary French red calf and marbled boards, spines gilt. Minor edge wear and light scuffing, spines a bit sunned. Small 20th-century bookplate on front pastedowns, ink gift inscription on front flyleaf, small embossed Parisian bookseller's blindstamp on each titlepage, occasional minor foxing. First French edition of the text recording the first Russian circumnavigation of the Earth. The work was written by the expedition's commander, and is of great importance to Pacific history for Krusenstern's account of the attempt to open Japan to commerce, and for his notes on the Russian-Chinese trade. The two ships sailed from Kronstadt on July 19th, 1803, and were together until the Marquesas and Hawaii. They visited Hawaii in the summer of 1804, touching briefly on the Big Island to trade for needed supplies. From there Krusenstern sailed by himself for Kamchatka, where he made extensive surveys and ethnographic inquiries. Japan was the main focus of the expedition. They arrived at Nagasaki on Aug. 30th, 1804, with the emissary from the Tsar, and presents, including looking glasses and a portrait of Catherine the Great. Hoping to open a trade mission, and expecting more freedom than was granted the Dutch, they found themselves "greatly mistaken." They were kept in confinement and suspense, and at the audience the following April, the negotiations collapsed. The ships' repairs were put to the Imperial account, all gifts were sent back, and they were politely but firmly asked not to return. The narrative contains a detailed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Göttingen Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht 1821 - (25 x 21 cm). VIII, 677 S. Mit 16 gefalteten Kupfertafeln. (DUGDALE, Sir William)
Elephant 4to (36cm); (x), (64), 108 pp; Engraved portrait frontis. of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, "drawn and engraved by H. Meyer from an original painting by Garrard in the possession of the Marquis of Salisbury", and 18 engraved plates (mainly views and seals); half-title, titlepage engraved with the bear and ragged staff motif long associated with Warwickshire; minor dust staining to the lower margin of the frontis, o/w contents very clean and fresh with original mid-brown endpapers; all edges gilt. Spectacularly bound in dark green morocco (by Dawson & Lewis, of Dean Street, Soho) with central armorial crests to the front and back boards surrounded by highly ornate gilt decoration of Tudor-style swags and waves framed by three gilt lines; the inner dentelles on both boards are simply breath-taking, comprising complex patterns of seemingly English floral designs along a strong folkloric theme featuring a Tudor rose in full bloom at each corner; equally ornate gilt spine with ten raised bands arranged in pairs. Despite some very minor chips and signs of sympathetic repairs, this is by any standard a remarkable binding very much in the style of mid-century middle England. Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (1532-88) was an English nobleman and favourite of Elizabeth I from her first year on the throne until his death. Kenilworth Castle was founded in the early 1120s by Geoffrey de Clinton, Lord Chamberlain and treasurer to Henry I. The castle remained in royal hands until it was ceded to John Dudley in 1553. FATHERLESS FANNY.
Liverpool: Henry Fisher. 1821 Front., engr. title only, damp stained in one corner. Uncut in contemp. half roan; rubbed & chipped, but sound. An interesting early edition of the popular work first published anonymously in 1811 and subsequently plagiarised by T.P. Prest. (BL confuses the two works.) The work is sometimes incorrectly attributed to Clara Reeve who died in 1807, but Miss Taylor does not seem to have been investigated. She is not Jane or Ann Taylor who were both still alive, but there is an Eliza Taylor who published one novel. Sarah Green wrote a number of novels and satires and in her preface implies that she may have interpolated material not already added by the previous reviser "an author of celebrity". The text is printed in larger than usual type. This copy has the early booklabel and signatures of members of the Woolf family (Camborne & Clifton Hotwells) and the de Sausmarez family.

Kotzebue, Otto von (1786-1846)
Weimar: Verlegt von den Gebrudern Hoffmann, 1821. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. "The Enlightenment came to Russia under the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-1796) and the eastward expansion begun under Peter the Great saw fruition in the establishment of Kodiak by Grigor I. Shelikhov and the Russian-American Company in 1783. With a base in America, the Russian Academy of Sciences entered the field of scientific exploration, and, given that communication and supply to Alaska overland through Siberia via Yakutsk, Irkutsk, Okhotsk, and Petropavlovsk required over two years and was extremely arduous, maritime routes from St. Petersburg to Kodiak were established by the Admiralty and its modernized fleet. The first Russian circumnavigation was achieved by Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenstern and Iurii Lisianskii in 1803-1806 via Kodiak and Sitka, founded in 1804, and was a success. The Napoleonic Wars interrupted a continuation of such voyages, resulting in isolation of the Alaskan colonies from St. Petersburg, and the Russian-American Company expanded to Bodega and Ross north of San Francisco in 1812 in an attempt to establish agricultural and stock-raising enclaves, and initiated voyages from Alaska to Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. The defeat of Napoleon in 1814 reopened the possibilities of maritime supply to Alaska and scientific circumnavigation, and Lieutenant Otto von Kotzebue (1788-1846), a native of Tallinn and young cadet on the Kruzenstern voyage, was appointed to command the second Russian circumnavigation in 1815 with a single ship, the brig Rurik. With thirty-three m … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chase, Owen
New York, 1821. 128pp. 12mo. Original blue paper boards, modern paper spine, printed label. Boards lightly soiled. Light foxing and soiling to leaves, worn at edges. Final leaf with some small loss in margins, repaired, and a small repaired tear, affecting two words of text. A good copy. The extremely rare first authentic account of the famous Essex shipwreck, whose sinking by a whale was, apart from being a sensational story in its own right, a landmark in American literature as the inspiration for the climax of Melville's MOBY DICK. Chase, first mate of the Essex and a native of Nantucket, provides a firsthand description of the ramming and sinking of the ship by a furious sperm whale on Nov. 20, 1819, some 2000 miles west of the Galapagos. The surviving twenty crew members struggled to survive in three open boats, but only eight lived through the ordeal. Six men who died of natural causes were eaten by their shipmates, and one other crew member was shot and eaten. Interestingly, all six of the black crew members died or were reported as missing. The voyage of the two small boats that were rescued off South America was twice as long as that of Bligh in the launch of the Bounty. A classic Pacific whaling rarity. HILL 281. FORSTER 17. HOWES C318, "c." SHAW & SHOEMAKER 4964. SABIN 12189.
