He travelled in 1782 to Calcutta, where he remained as a journalist and later as a prosperous newspaper proprietor. His best-known work is Chrysal, or The Adventures of a Guinea (1760-5). ‘Chrysal’ is the articulate spirit of gold in the guinea, whose progress from hand to hand, through some six different countries, serves to link various inventive and satirical episodes, including a section on the Hell-Fire Club at Medmenham Abbey. Various characters, good and bad, from high life and low (many of whom were libellously identified with characters of the day), covet and become corrupted by the golden coin" (The Oxford Companion to English Literature)."The ‘best scandalous chronical of the day,’ the supposedly ficticious characters being taken from prominent men of the time. A key to their identity is to be found in Davis’s Olio, one of the criticised being General Wolfe. ‘We may safely rank Johnstone as a prose Juvenal,’ Sir Walter Scott. Halkett and Laing ascribe the book to C. Johnston, Prideaux to Johnstone, and B.P.C. and B.A.R. to Johnson. Bindings - see above Joints - good and solid. Boards - see above.         Statement Respecting the Prevalance of Certain Immoral practices in His Majesty's Navy

Printed By Ellerton and Henderson, London 1821 - Small Octavo. . iv, 42 pages. This rare pamphlet gives an account in detail of the sexual practices on vessels both in port and in foreign countries. There were hundreds of prostitutes along with sailors wives (and children) were also inside the closed quarters with each bunk or hammock measuring 24" sexual activity began to take place. The Lords describe the various encounters in the narrow hammocks, the stench, the drunkeness, and the crude blasphemies and mockeries of the Lord's Prayer and Apostle's Creed. Of course, the problem of venereal disease was overwhelming and many of the ship's surgeons resigned if they had any other opportunity to avoid service on these ships. The outroar came when George Charles Smith whose ministry was on behalf of sailors and their families (see DNB) who wrote a series of pamphlets for the laymen in the seaports of England. Harvard University Library has many of his bound pamphlets under the title Prose and Poetry (not found on OCLC), all of which are related to the conditions of the sailors. He reported the nature of the wide open work of prostitutes of ship in port with first hand accounts of those who had served in the Navy and had to endure them. He notes firsthand accounts of those who confirmed these facts and while he was horrified with the constant blasphemies, it was the young boys brought into the service who at ages as young as 14 were not only exposed but encouraged to participate with the activities on the ships. He quotes Hatchrds (1822) which also exposed this one year after the issue of this pamphlet which was supposed to be available only to members of the Admiralty and select members of Parliament. He notes that when he first read the secret report's contents he thought it was simply the stuff of fiction until the came to learn it was literally true nor had His Majesty's government done anything to abolish it; moreover, they tried to suppress the information from getting to the public. He warns mothers against letting their little boys enter the naval service which he calls "floating hells" A recent account at Portsmouth is cited in one of his pamphlets where over 400 prostitutes [he calls them 'unhappy creatures'] are crowded on to one ship. He notes the dereliction of duty of the officers. He cites the disregard in the Admiralty's The Regulations and Articles of War. He notes that after this pamphlet His Majesty Proclamation declared: "all flag officers?.to take care to avoid .debauchery and other immoralities." This crusade began to take effect and by the mid-19th century the worst abuses had ceased. After Smith's death his son published a book on the crusade entitled: "The Great Moral Reformation of Sailors'. In 1822 just one year after the report The Christian Guardian Magazine (official publication of the Church of England) published more sordid details. There we learn that the scandal broke out shortly after our suppressed pamphlet was issued so an edited version appear with the declaration: "The Lords of the Admiralty have deemed it necessary to adopt any measures for preventing the evils which the Statement was drawn up to expose" then, it goes on to say that this second edition has been somewhat edited. In 1914 a reprint was issued and even it is uncommon. Bound in original paper wraps with a couple of small chips.

Manuscript - Slave Deed of Sugar Estate - La Perle - Sale of 50 Slaves

St. Lucia, 1821. Castries, 12 January 1821. Original manuscript document recording the sale of 50 slaves from the plantation "La Perle" in the Soufriere district of Saint Lucia, belonging to a Mr. & Mrs. Pupin of Brittany, also conveying the estate on lease-to-own terms, both to Peter Muler, a merchant from Castries, being a contemporary true copy translated from the French, for the English party in the transaction. Docketed to verso. Qto. 11 pages on three ribbon-tied double-leafs watermarked Edmonds 1821 and featuring the Britannia. Leafs measure approximately 31,5 x 20 cm. Very good, original condition, an uncommon document pertaining to an early plantation estate in Saint Lucia which is today a posh resort. The present is an exceedingly scarce primary source document relating to one of Saint Lucia's foremost sugar estates built upon slavery, and situated on the outskirts of the island's first capital, Soufrière. Mirroring the history of the island on which it sits, this estate has a history of changing hands from French to English and back again. Herein, La Perle Estate is being conveyed from a Mr. & Mrs. Pupin of Brittany, France, to an English merchant residing just north in Castries, Mr. Peter Muler. Fifty slaves, some being children born into slavery, are named, and callously described as property, more specifically "things to be enjoyed or discarded" by the purchaser. Although disrespected, the slaves are the principal asset in this conveyance. Each woman, man, and child, has been assigned a European name, their age estimated, and, after a cursory visual examination, an individual monetary value assigned. The appraisal of the estate's 50 slaves is presented in the island's obsolete currency, the Saint Lucia Livre, which would be replaced by the British Pound in 1851. Presented as "a sale of fifty slaves," this agreement further included the estate as a whole for a sum of 144,220 Livres, the terms for purchase taking the shape of a mortgage. A deposit of approximately one third is recorded, and a formula is specified for payment of the balance, the latter to come from part of profits sugar production, forwarded annually until the agreement has been satisfied in full. In addition, the seller agrees to furnish supplies and other articles for sugar manufacturing, at the current market prices found in Castries. Excerpts from the manuscript: "Mr. & Mrs. Pupin residing at Avranches in Brittany... who agreeable to the covenant made and agreed upon between him and the said Mr. Peter Muler of this City of Castries, merchant...." "Doth hereby declare to sell assign transfer set over and make corporal deliver... indemnifying from all Troubles and other Impediments... " "... the number of fifty male and female Negroes of different ages and described as follows... Leon employed as a mason, Benjamin aged 36 years... Philogêne aged 12 years... Aspasie aged 9 months... Louis Malin aged 66 years... Bibianne aged 42 years... belong to the said Mr. & Mrs. Pupin..." "For the said purchaser in the names and capacities aforesaid to enjoy do with and dispose of the said male and female negroes sold as above, as a thing belonging to him... "... the sum of One hundred and forty-four thousand two hundred and twenty Livres... the amount of the Appraisement..." "... Purchaser hath at present paid into the hands of the said seller the sum of fifty thousand Livres... currency of the island..." "... Seventy thousand pounds weight of sugar... arising from the Estate or Plantation called La Perle, situate in the District of La Soufirière... promises and engages to deliver every year... out of the first Sugars that shall be manufactured... to be placed to the Credit of the Account of Mr. & Mrs. Pupin... " "Done and Passed in this said town of Castries... the twelfth of the month of January in the Year One thousand sight hundred and twenty one in the forenoon..." "Here follows the Appraisement of the Negroes... 144,220 Livres" End excerpts. La Perle estate was later owned by André Cornibert Duboulay (1898-1982), born in Soufriere, and officially titled Managing Director of La Perle Estates Ltd. He was a nominated member of the legislative council of the Soufriere district. He was also a leading administrator of the St. Lucia Lime Producers Ltd., and a member of the board of the Trinidad-based West Indian Limes Association. In 1953 the Copra Manufacturers Ltd. was formed with Duboulay as its director. He was a founding member of the St. Lucia Coconut Growers Association, serving as Manager-Director for over thirty years. Still today La Perle Estate contains a fully working 400-acre plantation today, as well as an exquisite resort, together called the "Still Plantation & Beach Resort." Situated in the district of Soufriere, on the south west coast of St Lucia, (only forty-five minutes from Hewannora International Airport), the grounds are lush with a variety of tropical flora, fruit, and fauna. The Still Beach House, a quaint family-operated beach side resort is situated on the picturesque Soufriere Bay waterfront, nestled against the rise of the Soufriere cliffs and looking out over the glassy bay to the iconic Petit Piton - a defining landmark of Soufriere. The French established the first permanent settlement on the island of Saint Lucia in the latter part of the seventeenth century, building expansive plantations to be worked by slaves from Africa. Soufrière was the first town on the island, founded in 1746, and quickly becoming a center for trade and agriculture. By 1775 there were over 100 estates in the environs of the town, most producing sugar or coffee. These foremost plantation estates included La Perle, Ruby, and Diamond. The town was all but devastated by a hurricane in 1780. In 1784 the road between Roseau and Soufriere was built by the corps of French Artillery. Around that same time Baron de Laborie ordered the construction of a mineral bath at Diamond for use by his majesty?s troops, after an analysis of the waters at Sulphur Springs revealed a striking similarity with waters of the famous French spas. (Unfortunately, these baths were destroyed during the Brigand War of 1795-1797.) Although caught in a perpetual battle between the French and the English, stability was slowly regained following a campaign of the French Revolution when in 1794 the French governor of the island declared that all slaves were free, Captain La Crosse arrived to execute Royalists, and a group of recently freed slaves known as the 'Brigands' forced out the British army and every white slave-owner. In 1803 the British regained control of the island. Many of the rebels escaped into the thick rain forests where they evaded capture and established maroon communities. Slavery continued for a short time, but abolitionist sentiment was rising in Britain. The British stopped the import of slaves by anyone, white or coloured, when they abolished the slave trade in 1807. Saint Lucia continued to be contested by France and Great Britain until the British secured it in 1814, as part of the Treaty of Paris ending the Napoleonic Wars. Thereafter Saint Lucia was considered part of the British Windward Islands colony. In 1836 the institution of slavery was abolished on the island and throughout the British Empire, after which all former slaves had to serve a four-year "apprenticeship" to accustom them to the idea of freedom. During this period, they worked for their former masters for at least three-quarters of the work week. Full freedom was duly granted by the British in 1838. In 1832, before the abolition of slavery, there were 653 sugar estates in cultivation and over 500 coffee plantations in the British West Indies. The British Slavery Abolition Act provided grant totalling £20 million to compensate the slave-owners for the loss of their "human property"! Almost all the men and women awarded compensation under the 1833 Abolition Act are listed in what is called a Parliamentary Return, an official reply by a government body to a request from an MP. The return is often referred to as the Slavery Abolition Act: An account of all sums of money awarded by the Commissioners of Slave Compensation while its full title is Accounts of slave compensation claims; for the colonies of Jamaica. Antigua. Honduras. St. Christopher's. Grenada. Dominica. Nevis. Virgin Islands. St. Lucia. British Guiana. Montserrat. Bermuda. Bahamas. Tobago. St. Vincent's. Trinidad. Barbadoes. Mauritius. Cape of Good Hope. It can be found in House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1837-1838 (215) vol. 48 and is 365 pages long. . Very Good.

        Veduta del Campidoglio

ROMAN ANTIQUITIES The series of views Antichità Romane, made of 101 plates, was realized with the proceeds of the sale of the plates used for Raccolta di cinquanta principali vedute di antichità tratte dai scavi fatti in Roma in questi ultimi tempi divided in 40 views, published in 1817. This is the work with which the artist wanted to become one of the most important artists in the Roman cultural life; we can state that if we consider the size of the work and the subject he choose. In this work Rossini tested himself with his predecessor, G. B. Piranesi, who was considered as a point of reference when it came to ancient views and originality. Rossini, was deeply influenced by Piranesi, as it can be seen in the title, the legends, the same points of views and framing. Another important element he took from Piranesi is the use of light and the contrast of chiaroscuro. In these plates Rossini reached the higher mastery of the technique, realizing also extremely particular framings and a new and complex organization of the space. In the plates quite common is the diagonal view of the subject, which gave him the possibility to elaborate more the chiaroscuro. However, since the work is made of many plates, it is quite discontinuous and some of the plates present some indecision in the perspective formulation and a little harshness in the mark. Always following the tradition of his time, Rossini's choice of the subjects does not present any kind of originality; he actually depicted all the main archaeological sites and monuments of Rome. The sole novelty is represented by the precise record of the excavation works and analysis. Quite interesting, from a documental point of view, are the last four engravings depicting the destruction of the Basilica of St. Paul outside the wall, after the fire of July the 15th, 1823. The will to give life to his views, the reinstatement of the monuments to their historic context and the fact that he was not good with figures, brought Rossini to start a partnership with Bartolomeo Pinelli, Roman engraver and costume illustrator of daily life. He was the one who realized the figures of Rossini's views. Sometimes Pinelli took the subjects from his previous collection Costumi pittoreschi romani. Roma Rome Luigi Rossini incisore.

      J. N. Houdin, Gand 1821 - Octavo, uncut, in wrappers. First French edition: history of the formation of an early socialist society in Europe. This is a French translation from the Dutch of a text by the reformer van den Bosch, who, along with his Societé de Bienfaisance set up the colony of Frederiks-Oord in an attempt at social regeneration. In a movement similar to the kibbutzim of the twentieth century, the Societé advocated reintegrating the disenfranchised and neglected by allotting them barren tracts of land which they could renew through their own labour. Within Frederiks-Oord all are given equal rights, but all must also submit to the communal impetus in the formation of 'un état laborieux, mais productif, une existence honnête et indépendante.'Like so many utopian societies of the nineteenth century, an unquestioned faith in progress and innovation combines with an inherently positivistic notion that through work comes freedom and societal harmony. Throughout, there is a tension between blunt economic appraisals of the individual and idyllic portrayals of the community as a fantasy of ease and prosperity. Creased and generally worn paper wrappers, but in good original condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A Set of Six Plates on Horse Riding

London: Thomas McLean, 1821. First Edition. Half Calf. Paper pastedown on boards. . Fine. A handsome modern binding of six hand-colored plates which were issued separately, or as a folio, and not in book-form, in 1821. Elephantine oblong, 33 by 54 cm. The plates themselves are laid in a heavy board frame within the binding, and this frame has a window of 24 by 30 cm, which exposes about 4 cm of margin all around the images. The plates are titled: "Delighted", "Dissatisfied", "Perfectly Satisfied", "Displeased", "Surprised" and "Terrified". They are humorous takes on two gentlemen riding, not necessarily foxhunting. The men are opposites in their riding style, both exemplifying ineptitude and inexperience, though. The suite is very much in the vein of Alken stylistically, and also in the vein of such print series issued in profusion at the time. Obviously, such series usually ended up decorating walls, and so it is quite unusual and nice to have the suite survive intact and to have it bound so handsomely. With also a title page.Leather title label on front board.

[Elegy on the Murder of his Royal Highness Monseigneur the Duke de Berri.]

      H. Harrison, for the author,, London 1821 - Sole edition, printed for the author. In verse with English translation in prose, on facing pages. Composed in the aftermath of the Duke's fatal stabbing on the steps of the Paris Opera by an anti-monarchist Bonapartist, Louis Pierre Louvel. Noel de Quersonnières (1728-1845) formerly commissaire-général of the French armies was reputed to have died at the age of 116, though his dates suggest he only reached 106.There appear to be two issues: for the English and French market respectively. The first contains a 'Discours preliminaire' explaining the translation, with a printed section title to the verso of the title. The second (ours) does not have the section title printed on the title verso and the leaves of the 'Discours' are cancelled (hence the apparent mispagination of the prelims in this issue). 8vo (210 × 128 mm), pp. [8], 79, [1], apparently complete despite mispagination of prelims, parallel titles and text, a few small manuscript corrections, presumably editorial. Contemporary straight grained red morocco, gilt, sides with ruled borders and fleur de lys cornerpieces. [OCLC: BL, BN and Newberry Library only. Fine original small bust-length drawing in black chalk and pen and ink on blue-grey paper, purportedly of the composer

We have been unable to identify the monogrammist "E.B." "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, he sought through his works, words, and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music, and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt." Paul Corneilson et al in Grove Music Online.. Ca. 71 x 60 mm. Signed with monogram "E.B." at lower left and identified on the verso as being of Carl Maria von Weber. Mounted to dark ivory stock; hinged to mount at upper margin of verso.

Tableau de Paris. [Komplette Folge von 72 Lithographien].

      - Quer-Folio (280 x 350 mm). [Paris, Marlet, 1821-24]. Darstellung gefunden haben u.a. Complete and in contemporary colouring as present of utmost rarity.
