Reise nach Grönland im Jahr 1821.

      - Aus dem Englischen übersetzt von C. F. Michaelis. Fleischer, Lpz. 1823. X, 178 S., 2 Bl. – Chavanne 5286; vgl. Arctic Bibliography 10844 (2d ed. London 1823).

A geographical and commmercial view of northern Central Africa: containing a particular account of the course and termination of the great River Niger in the Atlantic Ocean.

An uncommon account. M'Queen, the owner of plantations in Grenada in the West Indies, collected extensive information, principally from slaves but also from a study of Arab geographers, which led him correctly to the conclusion that the Niger ended in the great delta of the Blight of Benin. Not being a member of the geographical establishment, little notice was taken of his account at the time and many bizarre theories were put forward before M'Queen's thesis was accepted. A Guatemalan imprint of several decrees passed by the Spanish legislative assembly, the Còrtes, in 1820. The assembly existed for three years, from 1820 to 1822, during the so-called Trienio Liberal, when a military coup forced Ferdinand VII to institute a more liberal form of government. Ferdinand eventually defeated those forces with the aid of the French, and re-established an absolute monarchy. The decrees included here orders penions to be granted to those families who suffered for their adherence to the Constitution, first promulgated in 1812, and offers amnesty to all those who were forced to emigrate from Spain because of their political views, among other actions. The longest decree addresses enrollments in the Spanish navy, and the provision of men for Spanish warships. The final leaf bears the printed signature of Gavino Gaínza, who at this point was the head of the Spanish provincial and military government, but who later in 1821 would sign the Act of Independence of Central America and declare Guatemala an independent country. Rare, not in Medina or OCLC.

Son but ? [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A RARE AND VERY PLEASING PRINTING, ILLUSTRATED BEAUTIFULLY AND THUS, ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE AS ILLUSTRATED EDITIONS OF PETRARCA ARE ESPECIALLY SCARCE AND RARELY SEEN. One of the most beautiful editions of Petrarca, accomplished by a fine printer in Florence at the beginning of the 19th century, maintaining the traditional antique elements of the presented work. Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) was not only one the greatest Italian poets but also the first true reviver of learning in Medieval Europe. He was a great student of the classical works-- histories, poetry, law and orations, and he included in his studies many ancient books and manuscripts that the medieval period had ignored for nearly a millennium. He also closely followed the politics and learning of his own age. It was with Petrarca that the ancient and the modern eras met together, and a new stadium for the Human spirit, that which we are wont to style Renaissance, was opened.

The Three Voyages of Captain James Cook

Longman, Hurst Rees, Orme and Brown, London 1821 - COOK, Captain James (1728-1779) The Three Voyages of Captain James Cook Seven Volumes Complete with Large Chart and Twenty-Five Plates A handsome set of the official accounts of Cook's three voyages. It is virtually impossible to overstate the importance of these voyages, or to summarize them. The original purpose of Cook's renowned first voyage was simply to observe the transit of Venus. This was accomplished at Tahiti but six months were then spent on the coast of New Zealand, which was circumnavigated and charted for the first time, as was the east coast of Australia. Cook named New South Wales and naturalists on his expedition named Botany Bay. The second voyage disproved the myth of the existence of a further southern continent and made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Numerous further explorations were undertaken and discoveries made including the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and South Georgia. Knowledge of the South Pacific was given a firm basis for the first time and the maps made then remain valid today. The final voyage was directed principally towards the search for a Northwest Passage from the Pacific, culminating in Cook's death in the Hawaiian Islands. London: 1821. Longman, Hurst Rees, Orme and Brown Seven volume set. Complete. Octavo, 8.75 inches in height by 5.5 inches in width. Rebound in half leather, artistically mottled leather over ¿oil-can¿ marbled paper boards, five gilt bands on spine with very elaborate tooling in four panels. Red Moroccan spine labels with green leather volume labels, refreshed endpapers matching boards. All edges in uniform original yellow. Text is Fine with hardly any foxing. Very nice original map in Volume 1 professionally re-backed with linen. Volume 1: 398 pages (foldout map at front and 5 plates), Volume 2: 368 pages (2 plates) Volume 3: 372 pages (4 plates) Volume 4: 304 pages (1 plate plus foldout table at rear) Volume 5: 472 pages (2 plates) Volume 6: 503 pages (6 plates) Volume 7: 462 pages (3 plates plus foldout table at rear).
