      First Edition, disbound extract from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society from vol 111 for 1821, pp. pp.398-424, large quarto, with one engraved plate (this a little browned and with an early library stamp on verso), London, [Royal Society], 1821. * GARRISON-MORTON, # 1255: "Bell's nerve, the long thoracic, described" and # 4520: "Bell's palsy; the facial paralysis ensuing upon lesion of the motor nerve of the face is here for the first time described". "Bell was one of the first physicians to combine the scientific study of neuroanatomy with clinical practice. Edinburgh 9, pt. 1 (1821): 153-77. Whole part, 4to. [4], iii, 258pp. 14 engraved plates (some fold., one hand-colored), 3 fold. tables, text illustrations. 287 x 220 mm. (uncut & largely unopened). Original boards, somewhat worn & spotted, spine repaired. Some foxing & offsetting esp. on plates, light toning. Very good copy. First Edition. Babbage's only paper on probability. "In this paper [Babbage's] concern was primarily mathematical, and we will find considerable skill in the manipulation of functions and polynomials. . . . The major interest in this particular paper [is] the ingenious use of algebra to solve probability problems, especially the devices using the coefficients of polynomials and the roots of unity" (Dubbey, The Mathematical Work of Charles Babbage, pp. 141-42).         An Introduction to the Ornithology of Cuvier, for the use of Student and Travellers

      Printed by J. Smith and sold by Treuttel and Wrtz Soho Square London Paris Printed by J. Smith and sold by Treuttel and W¸rtz, Soho-Square, London 1821 First English language edition fair 8vo. Original three-quarter leather over marbled boards. Boards and endpapers detached but present. 86, [8]pp. of index followed by an unpaginated section of 15 b/w illustrated leaves entitled "An Introduction to Conchology, including the Fossil Genera with nearly 400 figures." Deckled page edges. First English translation by T. Edward Bowdich of Georges Cuvier's "Ornithologie, ou, Histoire naturelle des oiseaux, d'apr? Le r?ne animal de M. le baron Georges Cuvier," which was first published in 1817. Cuvier almost single-handedly founded vertebrate paleontology as a scientific study as well as creating the comparative method of organismal biology. Bowdich was a member of the Wetteravian Society of Natural History and a 'conductor of the Mission to Ashantee' (Ghana). He translated Cuvier's work in preparation for his second journey to Africa. Illustrated with hundreds of b/w drawings on 20 plates of various bird species. Four plates in fold-out. Majority of drawings depict birds heads, others show joints and feet. Two of the four fold-out plates are numbered (I & II). Plate I is an impressive illustration showing a skeleton of a Pelican, the other are of birds respiratory functions. Includes Index to the Ornithology and Index to the Mammalia, as issued. Main part of backstrip chipped, minor abrasions on boards. Stamp and signature of previous owners on front free endpaper. Small closed tear on top edge of plate I. Sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in poor, interior in overall good condition. Scarce.

VI,376,(1) pp. and (Poloniae): VIII,199,(1) pp. Light yellowing to leaves, but a good copy.. The first Russian pharmacopoeia was published 1778 and revised 1799 by N. Karpinsky. The German issue, as here, follows Karpinsky's revision. - The Polish Pharmacopoeia was first published 1817, and the edition here follows this, and is thus the second edition
