        Monuments Anciens et Modernes de l'Hindoustan

      Didot, Paris 1821 - Contemporary French red calf-backed red paper boards, flat spines in six compartments divided by gilt roll tools, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments A beautiful copy of the very rare large-paper first edition of Langles definitive work on India, profusely illustrated and including plates after Thomas Daniell. A contemporary review described this work as follows: "Doubtless it was a vast undertaking to give a complete description of the immense country of Hindostan; to trace its history; to set forth the religion and the manners of its inhabitants; to study and to design its antique monuments and its populous cities: such an undertaking required the united knowledge and talents of the geographer, the philologist, the historian, the philosopher, and the archaeologist. Several estimable artists have already made us acquainted with the picturesque views and the romantic sites of this interesting country, with the various and singular costumes of the Hindoos, and their prodigious monuments. Many learned Indianists have developed the mysteries, till then but imperfectly known, of the Brahmanic theology; and the most celebrated travellers, judicious antiquaries, and well-informed officers, have in almost every part extended their inquiries to the most minute details of topography. However, not one of them has been able to present us with a complete view of the country, whose several parts they have described. Far be it from us to refuse the well-deserved need of praise to the major part of these authors; but one man alone, a man of superior talent, placed in a situation which enabled him to take in with a single glance, to collate, compare, and digest into one body all the materials which had been furnished by so many and such able writers, has succeeded in forming them into one beautiful and symmetrical edifice. M. Langles is the person to whom we allude" (Port Folio, vol. XVI, July to December 1823, p. 252). Langles was the most noted Orientalist in France and served as the keeper of the Oriental manuscripts at the Royal Library. Published in 26 parts beginning in 1813, Brunet cites three issues: regular paper at 15fr per part, papier velin at 24fr per part and grande papier velin at 36fr per part. The illustrations notably include 24 plates after Thomas Daniell, as well as other views of ancient monuments after Forbes and others. The colour plates are largely after Indian miniatures in the Royal Library collection and are richly hand-coloured and heightened with gold. Brunet III, 819-820. (14 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches). Text: half-titles in each volume, folding table in vol. 1, 4pp errata and 2pp list of plates in rear of vol. 2. Atlas: engraved title with a large vignette after Henry Salt, 3 engraved maps hand-colored in outline, 143 engraved plates (12 hand-colored, and including 24 plates after Thomas Daniell).         Queen Mab.

      W. Clark 1821 - FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION, final advertisement leaf present, this copy (as issued) without the dedication leaf found in some copies, a little light spotting, edges untrimmed, pp. 182, [2], 8vo, original drab paper boards, printed paper backstrip label (stained), joints a bit worn but strong, small losses from backstrip ends, some light scratches and marks, housed in a brown cloth felt-lined solander box, very good The first published edition of Shelley’s first substantial poem, which had been earlier (1813) printed privately in a small number of copies, none for sale on account of the radical content. In 1821 the publisher William Clark found a copy and printed this edition without authorisation from either Shelley or the Society for the Prevention of Vice; as a result he was imprisoned for four months (on grounds of distribution of illegal material rather than copyright violation), but that did not stop another printer from acquiring his unsold sheets and reissuing them the following year. The book exists with varying contents: Shelley had been in the habit of cutting out his name from the title and imprint of copies from the original printing before giving them away; he also regretted and would remove the verse dedication to ‘Harriet’. Some surviving copies of this 1821 edition have the dedication, but it was never present in this unsophisticated copy. Since that leaf is also found in varying locations when present, it was at most issued with only some copies and more likely added separately when available. The final advertisement leaf, also frequently lacking, is present here. The text itself has two states, since some copies were printed with the more outrageous assertions in the notes replaced by sequences of dashes, while others are unexpurgated; this is one of the former, which may help explain why the dedication was not included.         Oeuvres inédites de Diderot. Le Neveu de Rameau. Voyage de Hollande.

      Paris: Chez J.L.J. Brière, 1821 1823 - Véritable édition originale du "Neveu de Rameau", in-8; [2f.], xxvii, 148p. (Le Neveu de Rameau), [149]-322p. (Voyage de Hollande 1773), [323]-383p. (Correspondance), 385-443p. (Tables).

New and comprehensive rules for playing the game of chess; with examples from Philidor, Cunningham &c. &c. To which is prefixed, a pleasing account of its origin (by M. Favet). and the Morals of Chess, written by the ingenious and learned Dr. Franklin, ejemplar registrado en la British Library (000679204). La misma institución cita también la edición de Colombo (001433043) y la vincula a la inglesa ya mencionada. Ajedrez. Tratados. Escacs Libros antiguos anteriores a 1830 italiano

        Cheval Persan

      Printed in the lithographic studio of Delpech, Paris 1821 - This mid 19th century black and white lithograph after a drawing by Carle Vernet depicts a Saudi Arabian man riding his Persian horse. Measuring 16" x 22 1/2", the print shows mild foxing and a ragged left hand edge, evidence of previous binding. Antoine Charles Vernet, also known as Carle, was the son and pupil of the marine painter, Claude Joseph Vernet. From an early age he showed a tremendous aptitude for drawing and in 1782 was successful in winning the coveted Prix de Rome. Under the Empire, Vernet was awarded the Legion of Honor for his drawings of the Italian campaign. However, he is most noted as a painter and lithographer of horses, a subject to which he was devoted during the years of the Restoration. His work was so admired that Louis XVIII conferred the order of St. Michael upon him. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, horses were an invaluable aspect of everyday life. They provided transportation and sporting entertainment and thus, their breeding was of great importance. Artists celebrated the beauty and agility of the thoroughbred horse, as can be seen in Vernet¿s accomplished lithographs. Indeed, his equestrian passion was such that he himself was an avid horseman and just days before his death, at the age of seventy-eight, was seen racing as if he was a spry young man. Early twentieth-century full fine-grained red crushed morocco by W. Root & Son of London (stamp-signed). Covers bordered in gilt with panel. Spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A fine set.An imitation of Pierce Egan’s Life in London; or, The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, The Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis, "a work which was issued in and after July, 1821, in shilling numbers A journalist, and a well-known character in his day, [Pierce Egan] wrote nothing so popular as this Life in London. Indeed, the taste for it amounted to a craze. For his illustrations, Egan went to two brothers, Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank the success of the work was so great that the artists could not colour the engravings fast enough for the demand. It suited the taste of the time, when a ‘fast’ life had become a sophisticated and conscious aim. Life in London is a guide to a fast life. Part of the success enjoyed by [Pierce Egan’s Life in London] was due, no doubt, to its readers’ belief that they could name the originals of the fictitious characters. Imitations came swift and frequent Out of the sixty-five imitations of it which Egan stated that he had reckoned, the most important was Real Life in London, or, the Rambles and Adventures of Bob Tallyho, Esq. and his cousin, the Hon. Tom Dashall, through the Metropolis; exhibiting a living picture of fashionable characters, manners, and amusements in high and low life, which was published in sixpenny numbers in 1821, with excellent illustrations by Heath, Alken, Dighton, Rowlandson and others. Real Life in London is a pleasanter book than its prototype. Some have held that Egan wrote it; but the author had a purer style, a cleaner mind and a wider knowledge of London than Egan. The book shows many more sides of London life than his; though the formal descriptions of wellknown scenes or buildings, here and there inserted amid matter of a very different character, recall very forcibly Mr. Bouncer’s letters to his aunt in Verdant Green" (The Cambridge History of English and American Literature ).The London bindery of W. Root & Son consistently turned-out excellent work, both on fine bindings as here, and on trade bindings and sets. Packer lists the firm in business in Red Lion Square in 1899-1901, and the December 1942 issue of THe Rotarian notes with regret that W. Root had been bombed out (uprooted?) of their premises on Paternaster Row during the 1941 Blitz.Abbey, Life, 280; Tooley 198. Cf. Tooley 200. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Different copies vary in the number of plates" (Henrey 596). Aufl., S. 89 "a splendid work".

Very slightly worn, soiled and foxed; corners of final leaf creased. A very good copy overall.. First Edition. Kinsky p. 312. Hoboken 2, 451. Beethoven-Haus C 109/3. Rare. All corrections and erasures in the present copy also appear in the copy at the Beethoven-Haus. These corrections were possibly executed by either the printer or publisher before copies were offered for sale and correspond very closely to the list Beethoven sent to Schlesinger on November 14, 1821, after he had received his complimentary copies (Anderson: The Letters of Beethoven, Vol. 2, pp. 929-31, letter no. 1061). Beethoven had repeatedly expressed his frustration about the number of engraver's errors, writing in the last P.S. to his letter to Schlesinger of June 7, 1821: "Please do not publish the sonata until the corrections made in the proofs have been entered. For there are really far too many mistakes in it." (ibid., pp. 918-19, letter no. 1052). A particularly interesting copy

        A Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa, In the Years 1818, 19, and 20;

      London: John Murray,, 1821. Accompanied by Geographical Notices of Soudan, and of the Course of the Niger. Quarto (268 x 210 mm). Near contemporary dark brown half calf, marbled boards, low raised bands to spine, titles to spine gilt, geometric decorations to compartments in blind, grey endpapers. 17 hand-coloured lithographs, mainly of costumes, by Hullmandel after Lyon, and a partially coloured engraved folding map. Bookplates of the Charterhouse School library to front pastedown. Extremities and boards slightly rubbed, corners gently bumped, prelims lightly foxed, occasional spotting and soiling throughout, small chips to margins of plates V and VIII. A very good copy. First edition of this account of the Niger expedition under the command of Joseph Ritchie, one of several nineteenth-century British expeditions which sought to delineate the river. A British naval officer stationed at Malta, Lyon (1795-1832) volunteered to join Ritchie on his scientific mission as the officer originally commissioned, Frederick Marryat, was unable to do so. Leaving Tripoli in April 1819, the group was greatly delayed at Murzuk as both Ritchie and Lyon were taken ill. In November 1818, Ritchie succumbed to dysentery leaving a weakened Lyon to lead the expedition. Lyon continued to Zuila in the east before abandoning the undertaking and returning to Tripoli in March 1820. While unable to track the Niger, Lyon brought with him "intelligence gathered from merchants that the Niger 'runs into a lake called Tsaad'. He also brought back the first reports of the fate of Hornemann" (Howgego). Returning to London in July 1820, Lyon wrote an account of the expedition, detailing the journey as well as regional traditions, medicine, and natural history.

        The World in Miniature: Africa

      London: Printed for R. Ackermann,, 1821. A description of the manners and customs, with some historical particulars of the moors of the Zahara, and of the Negro Nations between the Rivers Senegal and Gambia. 4 volumes, duodecimo (approximately 153 x 89 mm). Original dark pink boards, printed paper labels to spines, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. 45 coloured engravings and 2 coloured folding maps. Partially unopened. Spines tanned, boards lightly rubbed, spine ends and corners a little worn, inner hinges gently cracked. Volume I skilfully recased with minor restoration to the spine. First editions of the four volumes on Africa that were published as part of the Miniature World series, which ran to a total of 43 volumes. Frederic Shoberl (1775–1853), was a London-born journalist and writer. He edited numerous works for Rudolph Ackermann, including several periodicals such as the English annual Forget-Me-Not and its juvenile version, as well as the Repository of Arts. 'In addition to his work for Ackermann, Shoberl was printer and publisher of the Cornwall Gazette, Falmouth Packet, and Plymouth Journal (1818–19), a Conservative paper issued at Truro' (ODNB). Also interested in travel literature, Shoberl published several books on the topic, including Travellers in Switzerland (1803), Travels in Greece, Palestine, Egypt and Barbary (translated from a French original, 1812), and Travels in Caucasus and Georgia (translated from a German original, 1814). In these four volumes on Africa, Shoberl seeks to explain the customs, religious practices, industry, and art of the region, in particular with reference to the Moors, as well as the Wolof and Mandinka peoples. The author also touches upon recent history, with a chapter discussing the slave trade.

        Paris, Notre Dame prise de L'isle Louvier

      R.Ackermann, London 1821 - Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Havell from J.Gendall's drawing after Pugin. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a expertly mended tear on the bottom margin. Image size: 13 7/8 x 18 7/8 inches. A highly dynamic view, emphasizing the cathedral of Notre Dame's position at the heart of the city of Paris Notre Dame, before the addition of Violett le Duc's central spire, is shown dominating the skyline in this view taken from the south side of the Ile de St. Louis, looking north west upriver to the Pont la Tournelle with the Cathedral beyond. The foreground includes a number of barges loaded with timber, probably for furl, bargees wrestle with the newly arrived vessels, positioning them using long poles, unloading of the moored barges is already underway, with workmen trudging up well-worn paths in the river bank. Much activity can be seen on the wide `beach' of the far left bank. Pugin (1762-1832) `architect, archæologist, and architectural artist, was born in France, and claimed descent from a distinguished French family. Driven from his country either by the horrors of the revolution or by private reasons connected with a duel, he came to London about 1798, and soon found employment as a draughtsman in the office of John Nash? To increase his powers as an artist, he entered the schools of the Royal Academy? He further revived acquaintance with Merigot, an aquatint engraver, who formerly had been a drawing-master to his father's family, and studied under him with advantage. Nash, who treated his pupils and assistants with great kindness and hospitality, discovered in Pugin a valuable subordinate. The truthfulness of Pugin's drawings in form and colour at once attracted attention. A change was then coming over water-colour art. The old style of brown or Indian ink outline with a low-toned wash was giving way to the more modern practice of representation in full colour, and Pugin, though he limited his palette to indigo, light red, and yellow ochre, was an active supporter of the new movement, and to his influence its ultimate predominance was largely due. In 1808 Pugin was elected an associate of the Old Water-colour Society, which had been founded in 1805, and he was a frequent exhibitor at the annual exhibitions held first in Lower Brook Street and subsequently in Pall Mall? About the same time Pugin was employed on Ackermann's publications, notably the 'Microcosm,' for which he supplied the architectural portions of the illustrations, Rowlandson executing the figures. ?.Meanwhile Nash and his works were not altogether neglected. Pugin in 1824 was asked to make the drawings for a volume illustrating the Brighton Pavilion, and while he was engaged upon the work George IV, who came to watch, accidentally upset the colour-box, and, mindful perhaps of illustrious parallels in the past, picked it up with an apology that greatly gratified the artist.` (DNB). The present separately issued plate led to a latter publication `Views of Paris and Environs,' (London: 1828-1831), with plates of similar subjects but published in a much smaller quarto format.
