Regal Heraldry: The Armorial Insignia of the Kings and Queens of England from Coeval Authorities

London: W. Wilson, 1821. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good Plus. Thomas Willement. 4to - over 9?. Book. xi + 112 pp., 36 plates, 33 of which have brilliant hand-coloring, the three others are olive colored with black outlines. This copy also has a "regal index" tipped in that appears contemporary with the book, and thus quite interesting. Thomas Willement (1786 to 1871) was the heraldic artist to King George IV. This was his first book. Full contemporary tree calf has wear, esp. along spine edges, and spine has some dryness and rubbing. Marbled flypapers quite lovely and also appear contemporary to book. Pages are clean except a few have what looks like a tiny burn mark in upper right corner -- there is no danger to integrity of paper, and this is not in any way disconcerting. Plates are bright and brilliant in their color.

Collection of nine leaves from a sketchbook made during the Peninsular Wars

1821. Collection of nine ms. leaves, most with watercolour vignettes, mounted on a board. The nine leaves which comprise this work have been cut from an early sketchbook, trimmed and pasted onto a backing sheet. Thus removed from their original context they form a mysterious and compelling set of words and images that tantalises and which provokes speculation. The author of these illustrations is one Dr Andrew Lucien Gordon and for the most part he contents himself with animating, in ink and wash, the imagery of various found snippets of poetry and prose, including a quote from Robert Burns which he copied from a colleague's teacup. These pictures are particularly fine and remarkably detailed for their size, delicately describing various landscapes and atmospheric conditions. It is known that Dr Gibson served with Wellington's troops in the Peninsular Wars against France, in Spain in the early 1800s, before resigning his commission and settling in Australia. The uniform details of several characters within these sketches shows a keen awareness of the dress standards and equipage of the time. The soldier depicted in the third leaf on the top right-hand side is wearing a uniform typical of Wellington's troops during the Peninsular Wars - this uniform was adopted in 1808 and continued largely unchanged until about 1825. It is consistent with the uniform worn by local soldiers - the New South Wales Regiment - who were relocated to North America to defend British holdings after the arrival of Governor Macquarie, who brought his own troops with him to Australia upon taking up office. Suggestively, a pencil sketch in the lower middle part of the selection, shows the entrance to the "Gulf of Annapolis Royal, Novia Scotia", the site of a British stronghold at the time. The blue facings on the uniform indicate that the trooper is part of a defensive force attached to a fort or some other defensive structure, not a standing army brigade (in which case the facings would be gold). The picture of the "Two Belgiac (sic.) Officers" is of interest - the uniform is consistent with one adopted by the Belgian forces around 1815. Their presence is probably indicated by the recent victory at Waterloo and the handing over of Belgium to the newly-formed Netherland states; after years of perceived inequalities in their rule by the Dutch, especially in matters of religion and language, the Belgians rebelled and claimed independence which was recognised in 1830. The detailed face of the Officer without a hat would seem to indicate that he was known to the artist.Upon his arrival in Australia with his friend Thomas Valentine Bloomfield, Andrew Gibson settled in Goulburn NSW, at the homestead "Tirranna", now an historic house. Thomas Bloomfield married Christianna, the daughter of Captain Richard Brooks, who sailed out to Australia with the Second Fleet and whose portrait, by Augustus Earle, is in the Victorian National Gallery.

[Four autograph letters, signed, to his wife, Carlo]. Pernambuco, Cayenne, 20 May-27 August 1866. 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm). In French, in brown ink on paper.

For Mouchez: DSB IX, p. 551. Four letters by the Madrid-born French naval officer (later Admiral), explorer and hydrographer Amédée Ernest Mouchez (1821-1892), written to his wife in France (apparently Paris) during his hydrographic expedition to map the Brazilian coast aboard the La Motte-Piquet, dated 20 May, 31 May-13 June, 13 June, 14 June -27 August. The 61 pages of text nearly form a journal of his voyage, with detailed day by day accounts of the progress of the expedition, his own and the crew's moods, the political situation in Brazil, anecdotes about the trials and tribulations of life in Brazil, etc. He wrote the present letters toward the end of his third expedition to Brazil, which ran from 1864 to 1866. Having not seen his wife and daughters for two years he felt quite homesick and eagerly awaited his return to France. The outside pages of 3 double leaves have rusty imprints of paperclips formerly used to keep the leaves together, 1 double leaf has a small hole slightly affecting three words and a few have minor tears along the fold. In very good condition. A detailed account of events and Mouchez's personal views during his third South American expedition.

London: Printed for R. N. Rose, 1821. A New Edition, carefully revised and corrected n. Hardcover. 216 x 133 mm (8 1/2 x 5 1/4"). Six volumes. A New Edition, carefully revised and corrected. Appealing contemporary brown polished calf, covers with gilt fleur-de-lys and blind-stamped palmette borders, large oblong octagonal panel at center of each board, ALL VOLUMES WITH A CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE PAINTING, three of these signed by R. Ashton, one dated 1821 (but all by the same hand), wide raised bands painted black and tooled in gilt, spine panels with central gilt arabesque surrounded by curling vines, gilt titling, marbled edges (very small and expert repairs apparently made to the ends of joints on two of the volumes). Seven illustrations within the text and a total of 94 engraved plates including a frontispiece for each volume, one of which is a foldout plate, and of which two plates are comprised of two illustrations each. Front flyleaves with ink inscription of Barbara Douglas Campbell, dated 1st January 1822, and with a later indecipherable inscription below. Just minor rubbing to joints and extremities (a portion of one joint with shallow damage from an insect), one landscape with a small cluster of gouges, superficial scratches to some of the other scenes, variable (mostly faint) offsetting from the plates, other trivial imperfections, but still AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE SET, the text fresh and clean, and the bindings lustrous, with virtually all of their original appeal intact. These volumes are of special interest as an uncommon example of what J. A. Arnett first called a "landscape" binding in his "Bibliopegia" of 1835. The scenes here (two showing vessels on water, the rest cottages and castles, the latter mostly ruined) were apparently executed with pen and brush, perhaps using a weak solution of copperas. As Arnett indicates, the volumes would have been customarily "prepared by being paste washed, so as to present an uniform fawn-colour," and the designs were traced into the prepared surface and then colored with a wash--English examples normally using just a black wash. As Nixon says in his Broxbourne Library catalogue, "the technique is virtually a form of etching, since the copperas or other acidic solution bites into the leather, and the strength of the solution determines the depth of the blacks." The closest examples from the bookbinding literature to use for comparison seem to be the bindings described under Nixon's "Broxbourne" #102, Foot's "Henry Davis Gift" #199, and Oldham's "Shrewsbury," p. 163. As fulsomely described on the title page, our set is comprised of "new and entertaining descriptions of the most surprising volcanoes, caverns, cataracts, whirlpools, waterfalls, earthquakes, and other wonderful and stupendous phenomena of nature, forming a rich and comprehensive view of all that is interesting and curious in every part of the habitable world." Hence, we have here the account of notable phenomena bound in an equally notable phenomenon.

Autograph letter signed to Sir Sidney Smith, with enclosed ms. description of an old Egyptian plaque in another hand

Paris 1821 - Bottin, Sébastien (1764-1853). (1) Autograph letter signed to Admiral Sir [William] Sidney Smith (1764-1840). Paris, July 31, 1821. 1 page plus integral blank, on stationery of the Société Royale des Antiquaires de France. 317 x 219 mm. (2) Description d'une plaque d'or portant une inscription en lange et caractères grecs, du tems du troisième des Ptolemés . . . Manuscript in an unidentified hand, possibly that of Smith. N.p., n.d. [1821]. 2-1/2pp. 309 x 202 mm. Minor marginal fraying and spotting, a few small tears along folds. From the secretary of the Société Royale des Antiquaires de France to British Admiral Sir Sidney Smith, thanking Smith for the gift of a facsimile of an ancient Egyptian artifact. The original artifact, dating from the reign of Ptolemy III in the third century B.C.E., was a golden plaque measuring 6 x 2.5 inches, with an inscription in Greek commemorating Ptolemy III's dedication of a temple to Osiris. This plaque, discovered by Egyptian workers in the ruins of Canopus in 1818, came into the possession of Egypt's ruler, Mehmet Ali Pasha. Mehmet Ali sent the artifact to Admiral Sir Sidney Smith, who had played a major role in the defeat of invading French forces in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars. Smith settled in France after Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo and remained there for the rest of his life; it is thus not surprising that he presented his gift to a French institution rather than an English one. La Société a été aussi flattée de cet hommage de votre part, que contente de pouvoir encore insérer le calque et la description dans le troisième volume de ses mémoires dont l'impression est sur le point d'être terminée ; elle me charge d'avoir l'honneur de vous transmettre des remercîments."[Our colleague Mr. Jullien has, on your behalf, sent to the Société royale des antiquaires de France a facsimile and copy of the description of a golden plaque bearing an inscription in Greek and in Greek characters, from the time of Ptolemy III, which was found in 1818 in the ruins of ancient Canopus, between Rosetta and Alexandria, which you have through the friendship of Mehmet Ali Pasha. The Society was so pleased by your gift that it will insert the tracing and description in the third volume of its memoirs, which has nearly finished printing; they have given me the honor of transmitting their thanks.]The enclosed manuscript description of the plaque and facsimile, possibly written by Smith, goes into further detail about the plaque and the circumstances of its discovery. It gives the dimensions of the original plaque ("6 pouces de longeur par 2 de largeur") and translates the inscription as "Le Roi Ptolomé [fils] de Ptolomé et Arsinoé frères déifiés, et la Reine Berenice sœur et femme [du dit] [consacrent ou dédient] ce Temple, à Osiris" [King Ptolemy (son) of deified brothers (?siblings?) Ptolemy and Arsinoë, and Queen Berenice sister and wife (of same) (consecrate and dedicate) this temple to Osiris]. Also noted is the fact that the plaque was discovered "sur une pierre fondemantale, entre deux tuiles de matière vitrifiée" [on a foundation stone, between two glazed tiles], and that the glazes on the tiles, one blue and one green, had been analyzed by chemists to discover the nature of their coloring agents.

Woodsia ilvensis; W. alpine, Pl. XLVII (Oblong Woodsia, Apline Woodsia)

Thomas Moore (1821-1887) was an English gardener and botanist and studied ferns and fern allies from the British Isles . He served at curator of the Society of the Apothecaries Garden from 1848 to 1887 and in 1855 published ?The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland .?This pressed nature print from ?The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland,? titled, Woodsia ilvensis; W. alpine, Pl. XLVII, measures 21.5? x 14.75? and is in excellent condition with light discoloration around the edge. The ferns pressed on this engraving are commonly known as Oblong Woodsia and Alpine Woodsia. The green coloring of this press is vibrant and finely details the fronds and the root systems. From the early fifteenth century onwards experiments with making prints from pressed leaves and flowers were conducted. The first ventures into this technique were relatively simple with the specimen inked and paper laid upon it. Pressure was then applied by hand to gain an impression. This rather crude method was advanced and perfected during the nineteenth century by the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna.Plants were now passed under pressure between a lead and a steel plate and an electrotype made, on the lead plate, from the impression. It was this innovative technique that Thomas Moore chose for the creation of the plates in his splendid book, ?Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland ?.The plates were produced for Moore by Henry Bradbury and are the finest example of nature-printing available. Thomas Moore?s book heralded a craze for ferns or ?pteridomania? during the nineteenth century perhaps because of the exquisite delicacy of the images projected. In 1907, the Thomas Moore Fernery was built on the site of his original garden.
