An Inquiry into the Nature and Treatment of Gravel, Calculus, and other Diseases with a Deeranged Operation of the Urinary Organs.

      - London : Printed for Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, Paternoster Row., 1821, 8°, VIII, 227, (3) pp., with 8 hand-coloured examples of sedinments on one text leaf, Halbleinenband der Zeit; Rücken erneuert; feines unbeschnittenes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe! - William Prout (1785-1850), berühmter Arzt und Chemiker, beschäftigte sich namentlich mit der organischen Chemie und hielt von 1813 an in seinem Hause Vorlesungen, zu deren Besuchern auch Astley Cooper gehörte. Sein zuerst 1821 erschienenes Werk "Inquiry into the nature and treatment of gravel, calculus and other diseases of the urinary organs" verschaffte ihm großen Ruf. - - Prout, "whose name in chemistry is particularly associated with his hypothesis that all atomic weights are a multiple of the atomic weight of hydrogen". J. Büttner & C. Habrich, Roots of Clinical Chemistry, p.84 - - "In 1815, Vogel published his researches on the reduction of metallic salts by sugar, and this work was carried further by William Prout who proved that urinary sugar differed from cane sugar." Murphy, p.149 - - Prout is also remembered, however, for his researches into physical chemistry. In 1815, based on the tables of atomic weights available at the time, he anonymously hypothesized that the atomic weight of every element is an integer multiple of that of hydrogen, suggesting that the hydrogen atom is the only truly fundamental particle (which he called protyle, and that the atoms of the other elements are made of groupings of various numbers of hydrogen atoms. While Prout's hypothesis was not borne out by later more-accurate measurements of atomic weights, it was a sufficiently fundamental insight into the structure of the atom that in 1920, Ernest Rutherford chose the name of the newly discovered proton to, among other reasons, give credit to Prout. - cf.         Un Mot Sur Les Deux Proces-Verbaux Dresses Apres La Mort de S.A.R.

1821 - Forestier, J[ean]-B[aptiste]-A[ntoine]-G[aspard]. Un Mot Sur Les Deux Proces-Verbaux Dresses Apres La Mort de S.A.R. Mgr. le Duc de Berri, Et Consequences a en Tirer par Rapport au Gouvernement et a la Societe. Paris: Imprimerie de Chaignieau, Jeune, 1821. 48 pp. Two added tipped-in color plates of the Duke and Dutchess de Berry. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into contemporary stiff-wrappers covered in contemporary wallpaper, hand-lettered title panel pasted to front. Light shelfwear to boards, spine abraded, most of backstrip worn away, a few cracks to text block, binding secure. Engraved bookplate of Cardinal Ernest-Louis Dubois [1856-1929], Archbishop of Paris, to front pastedown. Toning and light foxing to text, internally clean. A rare title. * In February 1820, Charles-Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, the last living male in the Bourbon line, was stabbed to death in front of the Paris Opera by an apparently deranged citizen. The murder (or as some claimed, assassination) had profound repercussions for French society and closed the final chapter of the Bourbon dynasty. The present work critiques the official coroner's reports following the assassination. The author describes himself as "Ancien Chirurgien de l'Hotel-Dieu, membre des ci-devant colleges et academie royale de Chirurgie, ancien professeur particulier d'accouchemens et membre eligible du college electoral du departement."         A Treatise of Algebra: Wherein the Principles are Demonstrated, and Applied in Many Useful and Interesting Inquiries, and in the Resolution of a Great Variety of Problems of Different Kinds

Philadelphia: Printed for M. Carey & Sons, .... 1821. First. Second American edition, revised, corrected and improved. Octavo. 408pp. Rebound in modern quarter brown morocco and cloth boards, with morocco label gilt. Binding has light wear, and a slight crease to one corner, and is near fine; there is foxing and edgewear in the text, overall very good. Joseph Ray's copy with his ownership signature and the price he paid for the book on the first blank: "Joseph Ray, Cincinnati, Ohio. $1.50." Also laid in between page 280 and 281 is a small slip of paper (approximately 4" x 5") signed "Ray" and with complex equations on each side. Ray was a professor of mathematics and wrote several books on the subject, beginning in 1834 with An Introduction to Ray's Eclectic Arithmetic, the first of a series of six textbooks which became the most popular and widely used American mathematics textbooks of the Nineteenth Century. They also formed the basis for Ray's Mathematical Series of textbooks. As late as 1913, annual sales exceeded a quarter of a million copies a year, and total sales of the arithmetic books alone are estimated at 120 million copies. The success of Ray's Arithmetic series prompted his publisher to seek an author for a set of readers. They chose William Holmes McGuffey, who joined Ray on the faculty of Woodward College, and where he wrote the McGuffey Readers which surpassed even Ray's Arithmetics to become the most popular textbooks ever written. .

NARRATIVE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY AND DISTRESSING SHIPWRECK OF THE WHALE- SHIP ESSEX, OF NANTUCKET; WHICH WAS ATTACKED AND FINALLY DESTROYED BY A LARGE SPERMACETI- WHALE, IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN; WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE UNPARALLELED SUFFERINGS OF THE CAPTAIN AND CREW.

New York. 1821. - 128pp. 12mo. Original blue paper boards, modern paper spine with printed label. Boards lightly soiled. Light foxing and soiling to leaves, worn at edges. Final leaf with some small loss in margins, repaired, and a small repaired tear, affecting two words of text. A good copy. The extremely rare first authentic account of the famous Essex shipwreck, whose sinking by a whale was, apart from being a sensational story in its own right, a landmark in American literature as the inspiration for the climax of Melville's MOBY DICK. Chase, first mate of the Essex and a native of Nantucket, provides a firsthand description of the ramming and sinking of the ship by a furious sperm whale on Nov. 20, 1819, some two thousand miles west of the Galapagos. The surviving twenty crew members struggled to exist in three open boats, but only eight lived through the ordeal. Six men who died of natural causes were eaten by their shipmates, and one other crew member was shot and eaten. Interestingly, all six of the black crew members died or were reported as missing. The voyage of the two small boats that were rescued off South America was twice as long as that of Bligh in the launch of the Bounty. A classic Pacific whaling rarity. HILL 281. FORSTER 17.         Queen Mab

London: Printed and published by W. Clark, 201, Strand, 1821. Demy 8vo; half-title not called for; integral leaf publisher?'s advertisements at end, verso blank (v. note); pp.182+[ii]; Victorian quarter olive green morocco-faced sheep, ruled black on sides, ruled and lettered gilt on spine; old-rose boards; t.e.g., others uncut. Very slight rubbing to covers; unobtrusive ink scoring in margins, passim, and one or two light pencilled notes, all apparently contemporary; single fox-spot on one margin and a couple of light marginal marks elsewhere, but a nice copy nonetheless of the scarcer, unmutilated issue. From the library of Paul Foot, with his bookplate on the front end-paper and his pencilled note of purchase dated ?'12/74?' on the front paste-down. The first published edition of a work printed for private distribution by Shelley in an edition of 250 copies in 1813. The publisher, Clark, was prosecuted by the Society for the Suppression of Vice and sentenced to four months imprisonment in Cold Bath Fields Prison for issuing the present edition, prior to which he is said to have sold only fifty copies, but on agreeing to give up the remainder of the edition to the Society, he was pardoned. The ?'balance?' of sheets and volumes supposedly given up appears to have been no more, at most, than a token, for Clark continued selling the title with a Bowdlerised text, printed from the same setting of type, in which a number of the most aggressive passages were mutilated by the omission of words and verses, whilst sheets and bound copies of the original issue passed to another publisher, R. Carlile, who re-published them with a cancel title-page in the following year, and again, with another title-page in 1823. Both the unmutilated Clark and the Carlile issues are known in two variants, which as far as is known were published simultaneously, the final leaf being either taken up by Clark advertisements, or containing the dedication ?'To Harriet *****?', which is otherwise omitted from the volume. It seems reasonable to suppose, however, that though the two variants may have been published simultaneously, the dedication was omitted from the volume in error, and introduced in place of the advertisement leaf part-way through the print run, the advertisements thereby being characteristic of the earlier state of text. The present copy is of the un-mutilated variant, and has the advertisement leaf. Buxton Forman, 22 All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

The voyage of the two small boats that were rescued off South America was twice as long as that of Bligh in the launch of the Bounty. A classic Pacific whaling rarity. HILL 281. FORSTER 17.         Regal Heraldry: The Armorial Insignia of the Kings and Queens of England from Coeval Authorities

London: W. Wilson, 1821. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good Plus. Thomas Willement. 4to - over 9?. Book. xi + 112 pp., 36 plates, 33 of which have brilliant hand-coloring, the three others are olive colored with black outlines. This copy also has a "regal index" tipped in that appears contemporary with the book, and thus quite interesting. Thomas Willement (1786 to 1871) was the heraldic artist to King George IV. This was his first book. Full contemporary tree calf has wear, esp. along spine edges, and spine has some dryness and rubbing. Marbled flypapers quite lovely and also appear contemporary to book. Pages are clean except a few have what looks like a tiny burn mark in upper right corner -- there is no danger to integrity of paper, and this is not in any way disconcerting. Plates are bright and brilliant in their color.

Collection of nine leaves from a sketchbook made during the Peninsular Wars

1821. Collection of nine ms. leaves, most with watercolour vignettes, mounted on a board. The nine leaves which comprise this work have been cut from an early sketchbook, trimmed and pasted onto a backing sheet. Thus removed from their original context they form a mysterious and compelling set of words and images that tantalises and which provokes speculation. The author of these illustrations is one Dr Andrew Lucien Gordon and for the most part he contents himself with animating, in ink and wash, the imagery of various found snippets of poetry and prose, including a quote from Robert Burns which he copied from a colleague's teacup. These pictures are particularly fine and remarkably detailed for their size, delicately describing various landscapes and atmospheric conditions. It is known that Dr Gibson served with Wellington's troops in the Peninsular Wars against France, in Spain in the early 1800s, before resigning his commission and settling in Australia. The uniform details of several characters within these sketches shows a keen awareness of the dress standards and equipage of the time. The soldier depicted in the third leaf on the top right-hand side is wearing a uniform typical of Wellington's troops during the Peninsular Wars - this uniform was adopted in 1808 and continued largely unchanged until about 1825. It is consistent with the uniform worn by local soldiers - the New South Wales Regiment - who were relocated to North America to defend British holdings after the arrival of Governor Macquarie, who brought his own troops with him to Australia upon taking up office. Suggestively, a pencil sketch in the lower middle part of the selection, shows the entrance to the "Gulf of Annapolis Royal, Novia Scotia", the site of a British stronghold at the time. The blue facings on the uniform indicate that the trooper is part of a defensive force attached to a fort or some other defensive structure, not a standing army brigade (in which case the facings would be gold). The picture of the "Two Belgiac (sic.) Officers" is of interest - the uniform is consistent with one adopted by the Belgian forces around 1815. Their presence is probably indicated by the recent victory at Waterloo and the handing over of Belgium to the newly-formed Netherland states; after years of perceived inequalities in their rule by the Dutch, especially in matters of religion and language, the Belgians rebelled and claimed independence which was recognised in 1830. The detailed face of the Officer without a hat would seem to indicate that he was known to the artist.Upon his arrival in Australia with his friend Thomas Valentine Bloomfield, Andrew Gibson settled in Goulburn NSW, at the homestead "Tirranna", now an historic house. Thomas Bloomfield married Christianna, the daughter of Captain Richard Brooks, who sailed out to Australia with the Second Fleet and whose portrait, by Augustus Earle, is in the Victorian National Gallery.
