-- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Autograph letter signed ("Mor. Rugendas") to an unnamed recipient].Munich, 21 December 1852. 8vo (22 x 14 cm). In German. With: (2) [AUTOGRAPH]. REGNET, Carl Albert. [ Manuscript note about Rugendas, signed ("Regnet")].Munich, 13 January 1869. In German.

Cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 754; Regnet, Münchener Künstlerbilder II, pp. 132-141. A 4-page letter by the widely-travelled German painter Rugendas, famous for his sumptuously illustrated book Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil, which was the fruit of his travels in Brazil (1821-1825). Inspired by Von Humboldt, he sailed again for South America in 1831, travelling through Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. In 1846 he departed for Europe, spending his last years in Munich and Weilheim an der Teck. The King of Bavaria purchased his sketches in exchange for a life annuity of 1200 florins per year. Apparently, Rugendas was still in need of money, since he writes in the present letter that he wants to travel to Prussia to ask the King for a salary "von dem es sich's gut hier leben ließ - ungefähr wie Humboldt in Paris lebte ...". He further mentions the preparation of a "Künstlerball", for which the conductor and opera director Karl Perfall had composed the music. Rugendas refers to the famous "Künsterlfeste", theme parties that took place every year during carnival. The letter may have been addressed to Rugendas's friend Carl Albert Regnet, a District Officer in Munich. This is at least suggested by the added document, which is signed by Regnet and which opens with the remark "Zum Briefe meines lieben unvergeßlichen Freundes Moritz Rugendas möchten ein Paar Zeile am Platze sein", followed by details on Rugendas's life and works. Regnet would later honour Rugendas with an extensive entry in his 2-volume biographical dictionary Münchener Künstlerbilder (1871).In very good condition.

Slight browning; overall in very good condition. Later ink inscription on recto of front free endleaf: "Obras Varias // de // Jo?o Severiano Maciel da Costa // Coimbra 1821." ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of a rare work on the abolition of slavery. Borba writes, "[Maciel da Costa] was very well educated and widely read, and in his @Memoria he quotes and criticises the books which were fashionable at that time: J.B. Say, Adam Smith, Humboldt, Malthus, etc. He presents viewpoints that are advanced for the day, such as the necessity of promoting industry in Brazil. He criticises the agricultural system which is detrimental and does not permit a fixed population, gives interesting information about the commerce and harvests in Minas, and proposes a plan for abolishing the slave trade Ö Apart from having great documental importance, the @Memoria is very rare." Conrad comments, "Opposes slavery on the grounds that it is unjust and hinders Brazil's progress, yet advocates the continuation of the slave trade on 'humanitarian' grounds. Cynically traces the British anti-slavery sentiment to imperialistic and expansionist motives."Maciel da Costa (1769-1833) a native of Marianna, Minas Gerais, was Governor of French Guiana during the period of its occupation by the Portuguese. While holding that postion, he was responsible for introducing into various Brazilian provinces nutmeg and other spices, carnations and a type of sugar cane. In the same year that the @Memoria was published, he was accused of being an enemy of the Constitution, of wanting to establish a republic in Brazil, and of writing a pamphlet (@Le Roi et la Famille Royale de Bragance doivent-ils, dans les incontances presentes, retourner en Portugal ou bien rester au BrÈsil, Rio 1820) that advised Brazil to separate itself from Portugal. Maciel da Costa countered these charges in @Apologia que dirije ? NaÁ?o Portugueza, Coimbra 1821.---- Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 221. InnocÍncio IV, 34. Blake IV, 47. Conrad, @Brazilian Slavery 101. A hitch in the rear of Volume 1, otherwise fine copy, uncut.

The Pastorals of Virgil, with a course of English Reading, adapted for schools: in which the proper facilities are given, enabling youth to acquire the Latin Language in the shortest period of time by Robert John Thornton, M D

London: F.C. & J. Rivington et al, 1821. The images "of this English pastoral...display less of art than genius, and are much admired by some eminent painters". With Blake's only wood engravings, some of the most influential in British Art.. Third edition with 232 plates, including 17 wood engravings designed and cut by William Blake, 4 other wood engravings designed by Blake but cut by another hand, a drawing from Poussin by Blake engraved by John Byfield, and 6 line and stipple plates of busts and coins by Blake. Two volumes. Pp. xii, 12 (contents), v-xxiv (preface), 214; [ii], 215-592. 12mo in 6s, original contemporary sheep, very skilfully rebacked, spine ruled in gilt, dark blue spine labels lettered in gilt, the bottom of the spine has gilt lettered "Pocket edition", housed in a modern clam shell box with leather gilt tooled spine and marbled paper covered sides and edges. A lovely copy. In planning a third edition of his popular school adaptation of Virgil, Robert John Thornton employed William Blake to contribute some of the new designs for the work. The result was a series of bold, intense and innovative wood engravings to illustrate the first Eclogue which are some of the most influential in British Art, inspiring Blake's followers Samuel Palmer, George Richmond and Edward Calvert as well as several twentieth century British artists such as Graham Sutherland and Paul Nash. On seeing the engravings for the first time, the seventeen year old Samuel Palmer wrote, "They are visions of little dells, and nooks and corners of Paradise; models of the exquisitest pitch of intense poetry. I thought of their light and shade, and looking upon them I found no word to describe them…There is in all such a mystic and dreamy glimmer as penetrates and kindles the inmost soul, and gives complete and unreserved delight, unlike the gaudy daylight of this world." (Life and Letters, p.15-5). According to Gilchrist in his Life of Blake (vol.I, p.318) Thornton was rather alarmed by Blake's work but was persuaded to use them by the intercession of Linnell, Sir Thomas Lawrence and James Ward. At the foot of the frontispiece (the first of Blake's series) Thornton and the publisher felt they to explain Blake's unconventional illustrations saying, rather apologetically, that the images "of this English pastoral...display less of art than genius, and are much admired by some eminent painters".

TO WHICH ARE ADDED, LESSONS, EXHORTATIONS, PRAYERS, CHARGES, SONGS, &c.

Published and sold by the author [et al.]; A. H. Maltby & Co., Printers, New-Haven 1821 - 12mo. [2],vi,10-157 pp. including engraved half title, engraved frontispiece, and musical notation in pp. 111-156, plus 21 leaves of plates (1-20 numbered), complete. Later speckled paper over boards, gilt leather label. Moderate foxing throughout. Very good. Rare first edition of the first illustrated guide to the organization, rituals, and symbolism of the Masonic Knights Templar for the General Grand Encampment of the United States, by the influential Masonic author and lecturer Jeremy Ladd Cross (1783-1860). The work follows on the success of Cross's pioneering 1820 publication of Masonic emblems, THE TRUE MASONIC CHART, with a monitor for the specifically Christian "knighthood" orders associated with Freemasonry in the U.S. Following ritual manuals, lessons, constitutions, and lists of officers for the orders is a large selection of songs, many with musical notation, and plates of symbols, ritual schematics, and Biblical and allegorical scenes, including Paul's shipwreck on Malta. The frontispiece, a depiction of Constantine's vision of the cross blazing in the heavens, is an early copper engraving of Simeon Smith Jocelyn (1799-1879) of New Haven. Jocelyn is evidently the illustrator of the all of the plates in the volume (taking the place of Amos Doolittle, who engraved the plates of the TRUE MASONIC CHART). Around the time of the TEMPLAR CHART's publication, Jocelyn enrolled at Yale to train as a Congregationalist minister. Successfully ordained, in the 1830's Jocelyn abandoned the engraving trade to dedicate himself completely to antislavery and African American educational causes, becoming a major leader in the latter.

(Hoefer. Tome 45, p. 542).

        NATURGESCHICHTE UND ABBILDUNGEN DER SÄUGETHIERE

Zürich: Brodtmann, 1821. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. Complete Set of the Plates from a Hand-Colored CopyOf Schinz's Important Mammalian History. 324 x 235 mm (12 3/4 x 9 1/4"). 177 leaves of numbered plates including illustrated title page. Without the text volume. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary black quarter roan over green marbled boards, vellum tips, flat spine with gilt rules, rolls, and lettering. WITH 177 HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHED ILLUSTRATIONS, comprised of pictorial title page and 176 plates, 17 of humans, the rest of mammals, the majority with original tissue guards. Nissen ZBI 3672. Cover surfaces and extremities somewhat rubbed, corners gently bumped, plate 136 with a cracked crease across the surface, occasional light spots on a few plates, some missing and a few torn tissue guards, otherwise a very attractive copy, the engravings generally quite clean and fresh. This is a complete set of the plates from the scarce hand-colored first edition of Schinz's important natural history of mammals. The pictorial title page features a geographically impossible but nonetheless animated scene of an antelope being chased by lions and a tiger. Plates 2-18 are portraits of people of various ethnicities, including Native Americans, Africans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders. This is followed by a parade of mammals, from wild and exotic beasts to adorable housecats. The equine plates are especially interesting, with horses shown carrying soldiers into battle, hunting with hounds, and working on a farm. Trained as a physician, Schinz (1777-1861) taught natural history at the University in his native Zürich, where he also served as curator for the natural history society. He was a prolific and popular author of zoological works, including volumes on birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Many of these were handsomely illustrated by one of the finest lithographers of the day, Joseph Brodtmann (1787-1862), whose works have always been admired for their scientific accuracy as well as their aesthetic appeal. Our copy of the present item stands out because the book is generally found incomplete and uncolored.

        General History of Birds

1821. LATHAM, John.A General History of Birds.Winchester: Jacob and Johnson, 1821-28.Eleven volumes.First edition of this comprehensive and systematic study ?"of every new discovery in ornithology,?" illustrated with 193 hand-colored copperplate engravings by Latham himself, handsomely bound by Mackenzie.Known as the ?"grandfather of Australian ornithology?" for his descriptions of birds in Arthur Phillip?'s Voyage to Botany Bay (1789), Dr. John Latham was the first to describe and name a large number of Australian birds, among them the emu, white cockatoo, wedge-tailed eagle, lyre-bird and magpie. He was a founding member of the Linnean Society in 1788, and through this association became acquainted with the noteworthy British naturalists and natural history collectors of his day. By way of these connections, he was able to examine most of the specimens and drawings of the newly discovered Australian and South Seas?' birds that were pouring into England from various expeditions. Latham?'s General History of Birds, an enlargement of his earlier General Synopsis of Birds (1781-1801), ?"is his great work, and was dedicated to George IV. He designed, etched, and colored all the illustrations himself?" (DNB). ?"A particularly important source of illustrations of Australian birds was the ?'Lambert drawings?' which Latham borrowed from Aylmer Bourke Lambert who apparently acquired them from Surgeon-General John White. A considerable number of these appear to be copies of some of the ?'Watling drawings,?' the work of Thomas Watling and other artists in the infant settlement at Port Jackson. Although he does not mention Watling, Latham quotes notes on the habits of birds taken from drawings in the Watling set… Latham made the first contribution of any importance to Australian ornithology, and it was not surpassed until John Gould embarked on his comprehensive and systematic study several decades later?" (ADB). Nine plates with duplicate numbers (two numbers altered by hand).Zimmer, 376-77. See Anker 277-79; Nissen 532; Sitwell, 114.Interiors quite clean, with foxing only to occasional sections, plates near-fine (some plates treated with a contemporary fixative, since faintly discolored), minor offsetting from text to plates.
