Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts. Berlin: Nicolai, 1821.

      - First edition of the last of Hegel's major works to be published in his lifetime, with the usual additional title-page: Naturrecht und Staatswissenschaft im Grundrisse. Zum Gebrauch für seine Vorlesungen. In the preface comes Hegel's famous metaphor for philosophy's ability to understand reality only retrospectively: 'die Eule der Minerva beginnt erst mit der einbrechenden Dämmerung ihren Flug' (xxiv). ' a complete system, in which the concept of a sociology dominated by the idea of the State is laid down. It turns away from the apparent chaos of the democratic advocates of individual right in favour of an overwhelming sense that liberty cannot exist apart from order, and that the vital connexion of all parts of the body politic is the source of all good. As the family is, without contract, the instinctive realization of the moral life, so, equally without contract, the State is the fullest expression of the moral spirit, where interdependence is combined with free will. The State is the perfection of man as a finite entity, whence the spirit moves into the absolute existence of art, religion and philosophy' (Printing and the Mind of Man 283). Provenance: front free endpaper with ownership inscription of one Wilhelm Thorke, and beneath it in another hand 'Von meinem lieben Thorke [?] erhalten am 9. Februar 1833'. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xxvi, 355, [1] pp., contemporary marbled boards, rubbed, worn at edges, later paper spine label to which some loss, lightly foxed throughout though less so than usual, otherwise a very good clean copy without library stamps and inscribed only on the front free endpaper.         The Pastorals of Virgil...

London: 1821. 2 vols., small 8vo, xii (-vii/viii), 12, xxiv (-i/iv), 214 pp; [I], [215]-592 pp. With an engraved frontispiece to each volume, and 230 illustrations including 17 woodcuts and 6 engraved plates by Blake, and four other designs by Blake engraved by others. Original full rose sheep, backstrips lettered in gilt, slight wear to joints and one headcap repaired. A very fine set internally perfect. Presentation copy inscribed by Thornton to his daughter. A very fine copy of a scarce work in any condition as it was issued for use in schools; the impressions of the woodcuts in this copy are the richest I have ever seen. Blake contributed 17 woodcuts to this volume (as well as 10 other plates, of which he engraved six) which were not well received; nor were they well treated by the publisher who cut down the blocks and printed them poorly. Only a few proofs before they were trimed are now extant. These blocks have remained amongst the most influential woodcuts in the history of British art and their influence can be seen from Calvert and Palmer all the way up to the present day. The blocks were saved by Linnell and were printed not long after Blake's death as separate impressions (perhaps by Calvert), and again in 1977 as a set by Iain Bain. Any impressions are now very hard to find. For a full discussion of this wonderful book, see Essick's masterly monograph A Troubled Paradise... (San Francisco: John Windle, 1999).         Original Photograph

Sixteenth president of the United States. Pioneering Scottish-born photographer Alexander Gardner (1821-82) -- whose work is often mistaken for that of his one-time employer, Mathew Brady -- photographed Lincoln on seven occasions, including some of the best known Lincoln portraits taken near the end of the president's life. Offered here is an original print produced by pioneering 20th century photography historian/collector FREDERICK HILL MESERVE (1865-1962). Known as "America's first great photograph collector," Meserve saved countless original Brady and other negatives from destruction and assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs ("Meserve numbers") still used today. Glossy heavy stock 8" X 10", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1940s]. Very good. Minor edgewear. Famed studio portrait depicting a seated President Lincoln in three-quarter's view facing right, left hand holding a newspaper and right hand holding eyeglasses. On the verso, near the bottom as was his custom, Meserve boldly pencils in his distinctive hand: "Abraham Lincoln / (Meserve No. 54) / By Gardner Aug. 9, 1863." The immediacy of any Meserve print is startling, for we've grown accustomed to seeing later generation reproductions of this portrait in books and other forms. A superb, rare piece printed by the preeminent photography historian of the 20th century.

Note sur le calcul des teintes que la polarisation développe dans les lames cristallisées'. Pp. 101-112, 167-192, 312-316 in: Annales de Chimie et Physique, vol. 17 (Dix-Septieme).

Paris: Crochard, 1821. - First Edition of a 'major controversy . . . one that marks the first public encounter between a selectionist and a wave theorist' (Buchwald, 1989, p. 214) -- Fresnel and Biot -- that also involved their contemporaries Arago and Ampère. 'The nasty confrontation between Arago and Biot that Fresnel so vividly described marks an epoch in the history of the wave theory' (Buchwald, p. 238). Entire volume offered. 448 pp; plates (2 folding). Contemporary boards. Edges slightly worn, else Very Good. Fresnel's 'Calcul des teintes' paper, as it is referred to by Jed Z. Buchwald in his The Rise of the Wave Theory of Light: Optical Theory and Experiment in the Early Nineteenth Century (1989; the bibliographic entry for the paper is 1821c), was reprinted in Vol. I, pp. 609-653 of Fresnel's Oeuvres (1827). In this paper Fresnel 'detailed his new hypothesis that light is always asymmetric' (Buchwald, p. 390). Biot's paper is reprinted in Fresnel's Oeuvres (pp. 569-590), as is Arago's (591-600); the trio forms much of the basis for Buchwald's discussion of the complex problems -- and Fresnel's eventual solution -- of diffraction, polarization, etc., on pp. 212-62. On pp. 227-8, Buchwald quotes a passage from Fresnel 1821c, 611-12, then follows: 'However, with this hypothesis alone one cannot explain any better than before why Fresnel's and Arago's rules [for the interference of polarized light] work. Moreoever, as it stands one would be at a loss to explain why the asymmetry sometimes rotates and sometimes does not -- whereas before one could at least understand that a wave might have both a longitudinal and a transverse component. Accordingly Fresnel did not introduce this new hypothesis without also suggesting a unifying physical interpretation for it: namely, that the asymmetry in question occurs entirely in the plane of the wave, so that light waves are always completely transverse. Fresnel carefully emphasized this idea in the spring of 1821, and it is worth quoting from him at some length because it is the only evidence we have from near the period when he developed his new understanding [my emphasis].' Buchwald then quotes from Fresnel 1821c, 635-36, and follows, "Implicit in this physical hypothesis is a new, and difficult, understanding of the function of the principle of interference, one that permits it to be used in a very general manner" (p. 229). Buchwald begins chapter 9, 'A Case of Mutual Misunderstanding', by quoting the letter from Fresnel to his brother Léonor that 'so vividly described' the Arago-Biot confrontation, then adds, 'Scarcely two years after Fresnel had won the prize for his diffraction memoir, the Academy ordered printed, over Biot's explicit and public objections, Fresnel's account of chromatic polarization. The members did not accept the report, but apparently only because Arago had insisted that they do so (and he in any case had the report printed in the Annales almost immediately [Arago and Fresnel 1821] [pp. 80-101 in the volume offered here; pp. 553-68 in Fresnel, Oeuvres]. This was a stunning personal victory for Arago and a stinging public defeat for Biot. Years before, Biot had snatched the field away from Arago; now, by proxy at least, Arago took it back. . . . The events that culminated in this bitter confrontation are somewhat tangled, in part because Fresnel's memoir was not printed until the Oeuvres. Instead, Arago printed Fresnel's 'Calcul des teintes' in three parts in the Annales. However, at the end of his report Arago remarks that the first memoir discussed in it was submitted to the Academy on 7 October 1816, and it was followed by 'a supplement' on 19 January 1818. There were in addition several notes that Fresnel gave to Arago and Ampère (almost certainly just shortly before the report was written)' (Buchwald, p. 238; the remainder of the chapter, pp. 239-51, discusses Arago's and Biot's polemical reports).         A treatise on the diseases of the chest . . . with a preface and notes by John Forbes, M.D.

      T. and G. Underwood, London 1821 - Laennec, René Théophile Hyacinth (1781-1826). A treatise on the diseases of the chest, in which they are described according to their anatomical characters, and their diagnosis established on a new principle by means of acoustick instruments. Translated by John Forbes (1787-1861). 8vo. [4], vii-xl, [2], [1], 2-437, [3]pp. 8 engraved plates by John Pope Vibert (1797-1865). London: T. and G. Underwood, 1821. Modern half morocco gilt in antique style, in a half morocco drop-back box. Old library stamp almost invisibly removed from margin of title with no loss of text or margins. Plates slightly foxed but a fine copy from the Max Miller collection. Later owner’s bookplate on front pastedown. First Edition in English of Laennec’s De l’Auscultation médiate (1819), printed in an edition of only 500 copies, compared to the total printing of 3600 copies that comprised the two states of the first edition in French. Laennec’s invention of the stethoscope, which he announced in his 1819 treatise, provided the first adequate method for diagnosing diseases of the thorax and represented the greatest advance in physical diagnosis between Auenbrugger’s percussion and Röntgen’s discovery of x-rays. Forbes abridged parts of Laennec’s work, omitted others, and condensed the remainder, reducing it to about half of its original length. Although he greatly underestimated the influence the stethoscope was to have on medicine, Forbes nevertheless was as responsible as anyone else for introducing and popularizing the use of the stethoscope in the English-speaking world. According to a letter from Forbes to Laennec, all 500 copies of the small English printing had been sold by September 1823. This suggests that the initial reception of the stethoscope was slow in England; however, by the time of the second English edition (1827), demand for the instrument had widened exponentially.         Bolling's Dam, Petersburgh, Virginia

Philadelphia: published by M. Carey & Son, 1821. Aquatint by Hill after Shaw, coloured by hand. Laid on archival mat board, 3 inch repaired tear in lower margin, not touching the image. In fine French washline mat. A rare example of a print from an extremely rare work that is now considered to be a 'milestone in American printmaking ... a foundation book for American color-plate publication, being the first publication in the United States of larger colored landscapes essentially scenic in effect" (Koke). This sweeping image of Bolling's Dam, Petersburgh, Virginia is from a suite of twenty plates published under the general title 'Picturesque Views of American Scenery'. The original intention had been to publish 36 plates in six parts but the work was abandoned after only four parts had appeared (published primarily by Matthew Carey & Son). Thomas Ash acquired the rights to the set and republished them in 1835. Any examples from either edition are now rare. Joshua Shaw, a British-born landscape artist of note, was inspired by the magificence of the American landscape ("in no other quarter of the globe are the majesty and loveliness of nature more strikingly conspicuous than in America."). Shaw set out to popularise the picturesque in America. His beautiful images were skillfully interpreted by engraver John Hill and the results can rightly be said to have been one of elements which led to the growth of what became the Hudson River School of landscape painting. The popularity of the Hudson River School from the mid-1820s onwards, paid dividends for the Shaw's work as well and Thomas Ash was encouraged to reprint the series in 1835. Deak 315.18; cf.         DISCOURSE, DELIVERED AT PLYMOUTH, DECEMBER 22, 1820, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OF NEW-ENGLAND

Boston: Wells and Lilly, 1821. Contemporary straight-grained red morocco with boards, spine, edges, and dentelles all elaborately gilt. Scattered light foxing. Fine. [with:] [MANUSCRIPT LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JOHN ADAMS TO DANIEL WEBSTER]. Dec. 23, 1821. [2]pp. with integral address leaf. Very good. Each document in a cloth chemise, together in a half morocco and cloth clamshell case. A presentation copy, inscribed by Daniel Webster on the titlepage: "Mr. Webster desires Mr. Boylston's acceptance of this, with his regards." This copy is beautifully bound in red straight-grained morocco, tooled in gilt on the boards and the spine, presumably bound for Boylston to signify it as a special copy. Accompanying the pamphlet is a remarkable letter from John Adams, second president of the United States, congratulating Webster on the speech and lauding him as the greatest orator of the time. Webster presented the pamphlet to Ward Nicholas Boylston (1749-1828), member of a prominent Boston family and a cousin of John Adams. Born in Boston, Boylston spent some twenty-five years in London engaged in various lines of trade, before returning to the United States in 1800 and settling in Princeton. He endowed a chair at Harvard in Rhetoric and Oratory, with the condition that John Quincy Adams would be installed as professor. The long and laudatory oration celebrates the bicentennial of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620 and the rise of the nation which grew from this seed. Webster's primary theme is the American Revolution and the principles of American democracy. Addressed to "the true sons of New England," it is a clear statement of Webster's political stance, in which he frames his views as the proper successor to the New England founders, most particularly John Adams. This includes his determined opposition to slavery and its spread, just tested in the debates over the Missouri Compromise in 1820. Discussing reaction to the Revolution, at one point he calls Edmund Burke "the most consummate orator of modern times." But his greatest praise is reserved for John Adams, whom Webster calls "...one who has been attended through life by a great and fortunate genius...among the most able and zealous defenders of the violated rights of his country," and other warm praises running for three pages. To John Adams, second president of the United States, one of the few surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence, and arguably the most important figure in the Revolution from Massachusetts, the speech rang true, and not only for its towering praise of himself. He wrote a laudatory letter of thanks to Webster, the very letter which accompanies this pamphlet. The letter, dated Dec. 23, 1821, is in the hand of an unknown secretary (for reasons made clear in the letter), but signed by Adams in a shaky eighty-five-year-old hand. In it he praises Webster for his ability as an historian and orator, and for his stand on slavery. It is a remarkable passing of the torch from one great American leader to another. Adams writes: "Thank you for your Discourse delivered at Plymouth on the termination of the second century of the landing of our Forefathers. Unable to read it from defect of sight, it was last night read to me by our friend Shaw. It is the effort of a great mind richly stored with every species of information. If there be an American who can read it without tears, I am not that American. It enters more perfectly into the genuine spirit of New England than any production I ever read. The observations on the Greeks and Romans, on colonization in general, on the West India Islands, on the past present and future in America of the Slave trade, are sagacious profound and affecting to a high degree. "Mr. Burke is no longer entitled to the praise, 'the most consummate orator of modern times.' "What can I say of what regards myself - To my humble name exegisti monumentum aere marmore et audio perennieus [a slightly misspelled reference to Horace: 'I have built a monument more lasting than marble or bronze']. "This oration will be read five hundred years hence, ought to be read at the end of every Century, and indeed at the end of every year. "I am Sir with the profoundest esteem your most obedient humble servant, John Adams." A remarkable confluence of documents, bringing together New England's two political giants.

Chronological Retrospect, or Memoirs of the Principal Events of Mahommedan History,

London: J. Booth... Longman, Hurst, Reees, Orme and Brown; and Black, Kingsbury, Parbury, and Allen, , 1821. from the Death of the Arabian Legislator, to the Accession of the Emperor Akbar, and the Establishment of the Moghul Empire in Hindustaun. From the Original Persian Authorities. 3 volumes in 4, quarto (272 × 208 mm). Recent brown half sheep period style, spines gilt tooled on the raised bands, blind tooled in compartments, red and black twin labels, marbled sides and edges. Large folding handcoloured map of Asia (from the eastern Meditarrenean to Korea, and from Siberia to Mysore). An attractive set: clean and well-margined. First edition sheets with title pages dated 1821 and issued by the publishers on completion of the work, scarce. A significant work by the orientalist and army officer David Price (1762-1835), who saw action in the Third Anglo-Mysore War against Tipu Sultan, and, on retiring from the East India Company's service, settled in Wales and "devoted himself to writing long, leisurely works on Arabian, Persian, and Indian history. Of these the best-known and the most important is Chronological retrospect, or, Memoirs of the principal events of Mahommedan history … from original Persian authorities. This covers the period from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Akbar. The earlier volumes are based chiefly on the Persian chronicles of Mirkhand and Khandamir, and are most detailed and accurate with respect to Persian history; but in the last volume Abu'l-Fazl is largely used. It is written in the over-ornate style of Price's sources, but it is the painstaking work of a genuine scholar anxious to do full justice to his authorities. Without pretending to any striking grasp or generalization, it is nevertheless useful and was for many years almost the only English work of reference for some branches of Eastern history" (ODNB).

A Treatise on the culture of the vine; with hints on the formation of vineyards in England. A treatise on the culture of the Pine-apple, and the management of the hot-house ... third edition

London: printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821. 2 parts in one volume, octavo. (8 7/16 x 5 inches). Half-title, general title, 2 part titles. 10 engraved plates (6 folding) after Speechly (8), Samuel Hieronymous Grimm (1) and Major Hayman Rooke (1). (Minor foxing to the plates). Contemporary green half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt fillets and a decorative roll, lettered in the second compartment, the others with repeat floral tooling Provenance: William Russell Grace (1832-1904, armorial bookplate) The Grace copy of the first combined edition of "the most important [works] on the culture of the vine and pineapple published during the eighteenth century, and it may be said that they laid the foundation for the improvements that followed" (Henrey). The two parts to this work were first published as separate treatises in 1790 (the vine) and 1779 (the pineapple), with second editions following in 1805 and 1796, respectively. The present third edition, the first time the two works had been published in combined form, is complete with ten plates: the plate list appears to call for eleven, but the fifth plate in the second part is not required. Speechly was a practical gardener who made his name working at Welbeck Abbey, the Duke of Portland's seat in Nottinghamshire, England. The results of his labours at Welbeck combined with the publication of the present treatises cemented his reputation as the one of the "best fruit and kitchen gardeners of his time" (Sandra Raphael). The reputation of his published works remains high: Edward Hyams in his Grapes under Cloches (London: 1952) praises this work as being "a model of the sound, practical, well-written ... manual." Irish-born William Russell Grace, co-founder of W.R Grace and Co., was an American success story and one of the richest men in the country. He was also a noted philanthropist and served two terms as Mayor of New York. James M. Gabler Wine into Words A History and Bibliography of Wine Books in the English Language G37890; Henrey III, 1379; cf. Raphael Oak Spring Pomona 94 and 100.

Juko Toka ben'yo [trans.: Essentials of the Treatment of Smallpox].

Several illus. in the text. Ten vols. in six. 8vo, orig. wrappers (some sporadic minor worming), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover (several rubbed), new stitching. Tokyo: 1821. Second edition, gathering for the first time three important texts (see below) by Ikeda on Chinese vaccination. Ikeda (1734-1816), was a member of a prominent family of physicians, most famous for their smallpox treatment, using family secrets. He studied with Saimon-ge, a Chinese physician living in Japan. In 1798, the shogunate opened the first medical school (Igakukwan) and the etiology of smallpox was first studied in this school by Zuisen. "Chinese vaccination (i.e. inoculation) has been known in Japan since about the year 1653 when one Sai Manko first introduced the practice and taught the art of Chinese vaccination to Masanao Ikeda. After that time the Japanese made rather thorough studies of vaccination, using especially three old Chinese books on the subject: Shoni toshin horon (n.d.) by Chin Banc of the Sung Dynasty; Toshin bengi kinkyo-roku (n.d.) by Loy Teiken; and Toka-ko (n.d.) by Shu Son. A century later, in 1788, a descendant of Masanao, named Zuisen Ikeda, wrote three books, each of one volume, entitled Toso membu-den, Toso shinzetsu-den and Toso shinzetsu-zu. The first two of those writings contained illustrations of the faces of patients suffering from smallpox."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, Part V, p. 200. The illustrations depict scars incurred by the disease and the faces of patients with smallpox. The text offers drug prescriptions, methods of diagnosis, and treatments. Fine and fresh set. .

Shimpen Sanko [trans.: Treatment of Complications from Pregnancy and Labor].

15 full-page illus. 42; 38 folding leaves. Two vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, modern stitching. Kyoto: 1821. Second edition. "A quaint thought, but an altogether delightful one, is suggested in the title San ko, the interpretation of which we read in the preface as 'childbearing...is like a ferry boat which is sailing on a big ocean.' That two-volume obstetrical work was written entirely in Chinese characters by the Japanese physician Korechika or Ishin Kuwabara, and was first published in 1813 with a later edition in 1821 under the title Shimpen san ko. The illustrations are well-drawn. It is intriguing to see again the representation of one-egg and two-egg twins, with no comment in the text other than 'the two fetuses have one ena [placenta]' or 'each fetus has its own ena,' respectively. In that work some attempt was made to describe embryonic malformations and fetal monsters, and there is an illustration of anencephalia."- Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, II, p. 495. Fine copy. .
