        Collection of Tracts and Speeches pertaining to Queen Caroline]

      London 1821 - 1 vols. 8vo. The Countess of Jersey's Copies. Collection of pamphlets from the "Queen Caroline Affair" (1820), with the ownership signatures of the Countess of Jersey, Sarah Sophia Child Villiers (1785-1867). She was a banking heiress with a colossal income; her husband, fifth Earl of Jersey, famed as a foxhunter and sportsman, was the son of Frances Villiers, a notorious coquette and royal mistress of George IV when Prince of Wales. Sarah Jersey was "one of the most prominent hostesses and social figures of her generation ? her houses became centres for the whig party. ? Her love of being at the centre of attention, perhaps, as much as conviction led her to take up the unfashionable cause of Queen Caroline when George IV was seeking to divorce her: she championed the queen with such frenzied fervour that her friends began to doubt her reason" (ODNB). The first three titles are exceedingly scarce; the fourth title is more widely held in institutions.Includes: 1. Substance of Lord (Thomas) Erskine's Speech in the House of Lords . the 14th of July 1820, on moving that a list of the witnesses intended to be examined in support of the Bill of Pains and Penalties should forthwith be delivered to the Queen. OCLC: 236079361. 3. Journal des voyages de S.M. La Reine, en Afrique, en Grèce, et en Palestine, par Louise Dermont ? précédés d'un Mémoire expliquant la maniere dont le Journl a été obtenu. First editions of volumes one and four of the British army officer and orientalist's history of Muslim peoples. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Major David Price, saw action in the Third Anglo-Mysore War against Tipu Sultan, and, on retiring from the East India Company's service, settled in Wales and devoted himself to writing long, leisurely works on Arabian, Persian, and Indian history. The work is organised into three volumes and four parts. The physical volumes each represent one part. The physicalvolume four is part two of volume three. The period covered is that from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Akbar the Great, Mughal Emperor, in 1556. Volume one is based largely on the Persian chronicles of Mirkhand and Khandamir, while volume four is based on Abu'l-Fazi, Akbar's vizier. An important work in the development of Western study of Muslim peoples and history. Condition: In half calf. Externally excellent with very little shelfware.         Investigation At Ilchester Gaol, In The County Of Somerset...

      1821. Torture, Bribery And Licentious Conduct at Ilchester Gaol Hunt, Henry [1773-1835]. Dedicated, With An Address To His Majesty, King George The Fourth. London: Thomas Dolby, 1821. viii, 7, [1], 271, [5], 8 pp. Main text in parallel columns. Etched portrait frontispiece of Bridle, by George Cruikshank, holding the tools of his trade (leg irons, manacles and a hangman's noose), five etched plates, probably by Robert Cruikshank, woodcut text illustration on p. 261. Complete, including the two supplementary addresses found in some copies. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine ends, joints and corners, crack in text block between title page and following leaf. Moderate toning, light foxing in a few places. Later inscription in pencil to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. * First edition in book form. This was originally issued in six parts, "price one shilling" each, in blue paper printed wrappers. Henry Hunt, the radical politician, had presided over the Smithfield reform meeting on 21 July 1819, and at the meeting in St. Peter's Fields, Manchester, on 16 August, which was broken up by the yeomanry, and became known as the Peterloo Massacre. Hunt was tried at the York Assizes, in March 1 820, for his part in the protest, and was convicted. He spent his two-year term at Ilchester Gaol. The report of the Commission of Inquiry into Ilchester Gaol, instigated because of Hunt's complaints, provides a vivid portrait of the corruption, health hazards and horrifying regimes in place in local prisons in the early years of the nineteenth century. Hunt leveled 21 charges against Bridle, the gaoler. These included gross neglect of duty, drunkenness, gambling, cruelty, torture, bribery, embezzlement, false accounting, "licentious conduct towards female convicts (Bridle was suspected of fathering children with two of them), not feeding inmates properly, and for "making boys sleep with a man convicted of beastiality". It was Hunt himself who examined the witnesses and principals involved. The plates by Robert Cruikshank are mock portraits of: "The Revd. T.G.D.

        Travels in Georgia, Persia, Armenia, Ancient Babylonia.

      Spottiswoode for Longman Hurst and others London -22 1821 - Two volumes 4to (27.4 x 21.2 cm.), half-title in vol. 2 (not called for in vol. 1), illustrated with 2 portrait frontispieces by W.T. Fry after Porter and 90 plates and maps (some folding) including 2 folding maps unnumbered (but one considered as pl. 83), two unnumbered plates (87 numbered) and 5 hand-coloured, executed in different media, i.e. aquatint, line-engravings, stipple-engravings; some foxing as usual, especially on plates, occasional light offsetting. Contemporary catspaw calf, spines with raised bands; restored and rebacked retaining original red and green gilt-lettered labels, endpapers renewed. First edition of one of the most substantial illustrated books on Persia. Porter (1777-1842) had been a court painter in St. Petersburg, and archaeological investigation and drawing were the principal reasons for the author's travels. One of Porter's aims was to correct errors in the drawings of earlier travellers such as Chardin and Le Bruyn. His work contains therefore many archaeological plates, as well as some views and (coloured) costumes. From Russia, Porter travelled to Tabriz where he met Abbas Mirza with whom he spent a considerable time. He went on to Tehran with Abbas Mirza before going to Esfahan, Persepolis, and Shiraz. In Tehran he had an audience with Fath Ali Shah, with whom he was very impressed. "An intelligent and readable book" (Ghani).         A Flora of North America, Volume I

      Philadelphia:: M. Carey & Sons,. 1821.. Hardcover. 4to, xix, directions to binder (i), ads (iv), 138pp, 36 color plates. Extremely clean copy of volume one (of three) of an important American flora, a work which includes the first successful use of stipple engraving in the United States. 16 plates are by Cornelius Tiebout, "the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790s to perfect his technique" - Reese. The book is described as "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely' (Bennett). Original half red calf with marbled boards. Spine lacking, front cover loose, but holding. Internally, very good. An important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work includes the first successful use of stipple engraving in the United States. This set includes the rare "To Subscribers" leaf in the second volume. In addition to its significance as a botanical work, Barton's FLORA... is also one of the most important early color plate books produced entirely in the United States. "The plates were made by [amongst others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790s to perfect his technique" - Reese. Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in color, and are afterwards colored by hand. It is confidently believed by the author, that they will be found the most successful attempts at imitation by sound engraving, of the French style, yet made in this country." He goes on to note that the method of color printing was the result of "repeated experiments" owing "to the impossibility of obtaining information as to the manner of coloring abroad." The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range.         Fine original small bust-length drawing in black chalk and pen and ink on blue-grey paper, purportedly of the composer

      - Ca. 71 x 60 mm. Signed with monogram "E.B." at lower left and identified on the verso as being of Carl Maria von Weber. Mounted to dark ivory stock; hinged to mount at upper margin of verso. We have been unable to identify the monogrammist "E.B."A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, he sought through his works, words, and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music, and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt." Paul Corneilson et al in Grove Music Online.         An essay on the production of wealth;

      8vo., xvi 430pp., title-page lightly soiled and with faint show-through of an old library stamp on verso, another old inkstamp at foot of final leaf, in a fine recent binding of old-style sprinkled half calf gilt with raised bands and morocco gilt-lettered spine label. A handsome copy. Mark Blaug (Great Economists before Keynes) considered this to be "full of cogent comments on value, rent, profits and Say's law of markets". [p.252]. J.R. McCulloch (1845) thought it to be "well-written, ingenious, and generally sound". Although damned by Palgrave ("as a rule are devoid of permanent merit"), III, p.550, modern economic historians have been kinder, suggesting that Torrens has indeed made valuable contributions to political economy. Spiegel [The Growth of Economic Thought, p.347], says this: "Torrens's theory of value contains both a critique, one of the earliest, of Ricardo's labor theory of value, and as a positive contribution a value theory of his own. He denied the validity of the labour theory value in a multifactor economy and, as Lauderdale had done before and as Bailey was to do again shortly, refused to participate in the search of an invariable measure of value. To him, value is a more relation between goods, not between the quantities of labor embodied in them but between the quantities of capital, including the outlay for wages, invested in their production. If competition equates the rates of profit throughout the economy, then, so Torrens argued, goods must exchange in proportion to the capital invested in them, with an adjustment to take account of the different durability of capital".

        A Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa, in the Years 1818, 19, and 20; Accompanied by Geographical Notices of Soudan, and of the Course of the Niger with a Chart of the Routes and a Variety of Coloured Plates Illustrative of the Costumes of the Several Natives of Northern Africa

      Albemarle Street, London: John Murray, 1821. 1st Edition. Hardcover. George Francis Lyon (1795 - 1832) was an Arctic and African explorer. In 1818, he was sent with Joseph Ritchie by Sir John Barrow to find the course of the Niger River and the location of Timbuktu. A year later they had only got as far as Murzouk where they both fell ill. Ritchie never recovered and died there, but Lyon survived and traveled further around the region. A year after he left, he arrived back in Tripoli, the expedition being a complete failure. This book recounts details of that expedition. Upon return, he was promoted and in 1821 - the same year this book was published - given the command of HMS Hecla on his second attempt. Lyon was reputed to have genuine informed interest in the culture and inhabitants of the lands he visited. Wearing Arab/Muslim dress and learning fluent Arabic he managed to blend in with the inhabitants of North Africa. In the Arctic, he was tattooed by the Inuit and ate raw caribou and seal meat with them. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1827. This volume features the original half leather binding over marbled boards with leather corners, marbled page edges, and marbled endpapers. The contents are superior - clean and bright with only light intermittent spotting. The large folding map and all 17 hand-colored plates are present. The only previous ownership marking are some collector notes in pencil on the ffep and a stamp stating "Withdrawn" from "The James Humphreys Collection" on the title page verso. The original binding is preserved, but considerably worn at the edges. The hinges are split and bear a crude leather overlay reinforcement at the top and bottom of the spine, which keeps the boards attached to the binding.

Adlard. 1821 - First edition. 8vo. pp. 12; large folding frontispiece engraving of Bern with key; closed tear to margin of engraving, else very good in contemporary plain wrappers. The text offers a four-page description of Bern, followed by explanations of the sites and distant mountains shown in the panorama. The final three pages offer a “Description of the High Alps”, with brief paragraphs on 12 peaks that include the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn, Eiger, Monch, and the Jungfrau.

[2] pp.. 1821] Three days before the promulgation of the Plan of Iguala, Iturbide wrote to the bishop of Guadalajara assuring him of the importance of Catholicism as the religion of Mexico in the independent Mexico that Iturbide was striving to achieve. The text of the letter was first published in Puebla, with, apparently, only => one known copy surviving (at Condumex; Gavito 899). Of this Mexico City reprinting WorldCat locates => no copies in the U.S., one in Mexico and one in Britain. The copy recorded in the Sutro printed catalogue is not listed in the Sutro OPAC. Old folds. Evidence of having been folded and bound in an 8vo volume; a portion of the inner margin excised to allow for that folding and binding-in. Very good.
