A. Strahan for T. Cadell and W. Davies et al, 1820. Full leather. 5 Volumes, 8vo - over 7.75" to 9.75" tall. Very good. Richard Burn (1709-1785) received his LLD at Oxford University; he was the vicar of Orton and later the justice of the peace for the counties of Westmoreland and Cumberland. This work is considered to be the most useful book ever published on the law relating to justices of the peace; laws relating to evidence, books, ships, marriage, arrests and corn are among the many referenced in this work (DNB pg.377). This set is complete in five volumes, we do not have the separately-published 1823 Supplement. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full leather, blind-embossed decorative rule on front and rear boards, red and black leather spine labels with gilt lettering and rules, plain endpapers, the author's Preface to this edition is followed by the Preface to the First Edition, then an Advertisement Concerning the Fifteenth Edition, an Introduction, a Table of Abbreviations, at which point the text begins with "Accessary"; octavo size (approximately 8.25" tall), approximately 4000 pages for all five volumes. ***CONDITION: Overall very good, the leather bindings are smooth and supple, all spine labels are present and the gilt lettering is bright, the interiors are clean with very minor, scattered foxing, and the only prior owner markings we see are a vintage prior owner name written at the top of the front pastedown in each volume. There is some minor overall wear to the bindings and some wear to the joints, the bottom half of the front joint of Volume III is cracked with so … [Click Below for Full Description]

Karl Gottlob Kuhn
Leipzig: Libraria Car. Cnoblochii, 1820. These 28 volumes are in various states of preservation. Please see general description for complete details. I am offering for sale a very rare, complete 28-volume edition of "Medicorum Graecorum Opera Quae Exstant," edited by Dr. Karl Gottlob Kuhn (1754-1840), published upon completion of each volume between 1821 and 1830 in Leipzig, Germany. This was a renowned work of scholarship--editing and reprinting, in the original Greek with a companion translation of each work in Latin, all the surviving medical writings from Ancient Greece. The set consists of all the extant works of Galen of Pergamon, in 22 volumes (18 books; with Books 17 and 18 printed in two volumes each); the works of Hippocrates of Kos, in three volumes; the works of Pedanius Dioscorides, in two volumes; and the works of Aretaeus of Cappadocia, in one volume. The books (except for one lacking covers) are bound in white calfskin, with marbled endleaves and page ends. Titles and illustrations are stamped on covers and spines. The stamps on the front covers say "Coll. Reg. Oxon," so I am assuming these were added when the set became the property of the library at Oxford University. On the front endpaper of each volume is a book plate identifying the set as the property of Oxford, and each bookplate bears a stamp saying "Cancelled from the Library at Queen's College, Oxford." The plates also say the set was the gift to the library from of Robert Mason. At some date after the set was withdrawn from the library at Oxford, it became part of the personal library of Zeph Stew … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oersted, John (Hans) Christian
Printed by C. Baldwin for Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, 1820. First Edition. Hardcover. The first edition in English of Oersted's magnum opus (pp. 273-276), preceded by a small Latin pamphlet (Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electici in acum magneticum) also published in 1820. This work laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics with the work of Michael Faraday following soon after and later Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of the original Latin publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Oersted himself realized the importance of an English translation as attested to by the note at the beginning of this paper: "Translated from a printed account drawn up in Latin by the author, and transmitted by him to the Editor of the Annals of Philosophy." "...[Oersted] had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 ... He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism, and to prove their existence by experiment ... In the winter of 1819-1820, he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current carrying wire and saw the needle was disturbed. Resuming the experiments the summer of 1820, Oersted ascertained that a circular magnetic field surrounded current carrying wire, and that a magnetic needle brought into this field would set itself tangent to the circle. Oersted's discovery opened up a new epoch in the history of physics..." (Norman 1606). Octavo. ROSSINI, Gioachino 1792-1868
Paris: Chez Boieldieu jeune [PN 988], [ca. 1820]. Folio. Half dark red morocco with marbled boards, decorative bands gilt on spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt. 1f. (title), [1] (cast list and table of contents), 2-235, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. With "chez Hanry Editeur de Musique Rue neuve des Petits Champs No. 17." overpaste to lower margin of title. Binding slightly worn, rubbed, and bumped. Minor offsetting; very light staining or creasing to upper blank margins of some leaves; small stab hole to upper inner margins; slight loss to edges of pp. 11-12, not affecting music. A very good copy overall. First French Edition (with supplement for the added recitative and cavatina to pp. 225-235). Gossett p. 312. OCLC no. 19132048. Otello, to a libretto by Francesco Berio di Salsa after William Shakespeare's play, was first performed in Naples at the Teatro del Fondo on December 4, 1816. "Rossini's choice of Shakespeare's Othello, complete with its tragic denouement, was a bold and original one at the time... In the 19th century the opera's huge popularity owed much to the final act. Meyerbeer wrote: 'The third act of Otello established its reputation so firmly that a thousand errors could not shake it. This third act is really godlike, and what is so extraordinary is that its beauties are quite un-Rossini-like. First-rate declamation, continuously impassioned recitative, mysterious accompaniments full of local colour, and, in particular, the style of the old romances brought to highest perfection'." [Crawford, John William Roy]; [Cruikshank, Isaac Robert
Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill [printed by Thomas, 1820. Cruikshank, Isaac Robert. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. Near fine. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management. . .is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George, who is better known for his work with Char … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although he did not invent the style 'a la cathedrale', as is often claimed on his behalf (the London binder Whitaker was its originator), he brought it to perfection, and became its principal practitioner in France."
