HUGHES, The Rev Thomas Smart.
London Mawman, 1820. First edition. 2 vols, 4to, (28cm) xii, viii, 1-393, 1-393pp, engraved maps, one folding, one double page, 12 engraved plates, of which two aquatinted by F.C. Lewis, light spotting to plates, offsetting from plates to text, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, a very good set. Hughes travelled in the Mediterranean and Greece in 1813-14 as tutor to Richard Townley Parker. They visited Spain, Italy, Sicily, Greece and Albania. Hughes and Parker arrived in Preveza late in 1813; they were joined on their Albanian tour by C.R. Cockerell, who spent about two months with them. Most of the book is in fact devoted to a description of this part of their travels, and 10 of the 12 engravings are after drawings by Cockerell illustrating sites in Epirus. This work is one of the major sources of information about Ali Pasha. Hughes was a confirmed philhellene. Atabey 599, Blackmer 842; Weber 86; Abbey 203. [Attributes: First Edition]

BALKANS. MANUSCRIT.
[circa 1820]. Bonne condition.

PEAR)
London. Horticultural Society of London. No date. Ca. 1820. Engraving, hand colored, sheet 11 x 8 inches. Short tear at upper edge, well outside image and to just about same level at the volume information. Otherwise very clean and bright. This is plate IX from Volume 3 of the "Transactions of the Horticultural Society". A notable feature of this publication was its pioneering use of steel (as opposed to copper) for the engraved illustrations after 1820. A number of artists and engravers were involved in the production of the different engravings, but in all instances these are exceptionally beautiful images skilfully rendered by a combination of different techniques including engraving, mezzotint, aquatint and stipple, colored a la poupee and by hand. There is great subtlety to the coloring, giving a most realistic effect. [Dunthorne, #142].

Panckoucke C.L.F. edit. - Jollois & Devilliers dis. - Monsaldy inc.
