FONT>5, 5 by 3.5, [xiv] 216pp, 1820. Book. A pocket-sized volumebound in full leather. The binding is typical of the Regency era. This volume lacks the title page, however it seems to be Cookery Made Easy by Michael Willis, several editions of which werepublished by Orlando Hodgson in the 1820's. Includes sections on gravies and sauces, soups, stewing etc as well aswine-making, bee-keeping and the poultry yard. There are some monthly 'Bills of Fare', suggested dinners for every month of the year and a number of supper suggestionsto the backof the volume. There arefive plates illustrating trussing and carving. Condition: The binding is loose, and although both boardsare attached, the rear board is hanging by one cord and may detach in the post. The page block is reasonably solid, though the cords are visible in several places. The title page is missing, as are pages vii-x and xv, which contains the conclusion of the preface and several of the contents pages. The extremities are worn with marks and scuffing to the boards and the spine is frayed but present, though with loss to the top and tail of spine. Internally the pages are generally clean though there are some persistant brown stains, one to the margin, and one to the top corners which effect a large number of pages. There is also some discolouration and pencil marksto pages at the the front and rear. Overall the condition of this volume is fair. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Marquis, F.
1820 - MARQUIS, F. Du Thé, ou, Nouveau traité sur sa culture, sa récolte, sa préparation et ses usages. 124 pp. With a frontispiece engraving after Kaempfer and 9 engraved plates (of which 6 are folding), all with contemporary hand-colouring. 12mo., 150 x 90 mm, bound by Hélèn Lesieur in a colourful japoniste style binding in a matching slipcase, original printed pink wrappers bound in. Paris: Nepveu, 1820. First Edition of this scarce account of Tea, its history and production, beautifully illustrated with ten brilliantly hand-coloured engraved plates. The fine engravings were executed after designs by Kaempfer, Bessa, Deguignes and others, and depict several varieties of the plant in full flower; the fruits of the tree; the manufacture of tea in China and Japan; transporting tea leaves by boat; preparing sheets to cover the bales; manufacturing crates for shipping, and workers using their feet to crush the tea leaves in great barrels. The final plate - engraved after a Chinese painting - depicts a scene wherein a group of men are using monkeys to collect rare tea leaves. Two trade cards for the F. Marquis, Négociant en Thés Fabricant de Chocolats, and one for Duvauchel Md. De Thés tipped on the preliminaries. Some scattered foxing to the text, still an appealling copy, uniquely bound. Not in Cordier, Nissen, Plesch, Pritzel, N.Y. Horticultural Society Library Catalogue, or Lindley Library Catalogue. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Gildemeister C.
Artist: Gildemeister C; issued in: New York; date: ca 1820 - - technic: Lithography; - colorit: colored; - condition: Stains; - size (in cm): 39 x 49; - description: View of the liberation of Lajos (Louis) Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva (1802 ? 1894). He was a Hungarian lawyer, journalist, politician and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848?49. He was widely honored during his lifetime, including in the United Kingdom and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. Kossuth's bronze bust can be found in the United States Capitol with the inscription: ;Father of Hungarian Democracy, Hungarian Statesman, Freedom Fighter, 1848?1849; Kossuth followed the ideas of the French nation state ideology, which was a ruling liberal idea of his era. Accordingly he considered and regarded everybody as ;Hungarian; -regardless of their mother tongue and ethnic ancestry - who lived in the territory of Hungary. He even quoted King Stephen I of Hungary's admonition: ;A nation of one language and the same customs is weak and fragile;_. Kossuth's ideas stand on the enlightened Western European type liberal nationalism. He watched with anxiety every opportunity of freeing his country from Austria. An attempt to organize a Hungarian legion during the Crimean War was stopped; but in 1859 he entered into negotiations with Napoleon III, left England for Italy and began the organization of a Hungarian legion, which was to make a descent on the coast of Dalmatia. The Peace of Villafranca made this impossible. Now there is a Koss … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris.: Panckouke., Ca. 1820. Paris.: Panckouke.. Ca. 1820.. Copper plate engraving (uncolored), image approximately 13 1/2 x 19 inches on sheet 21 1/2 x 28 inches. Very good condition: light foxing to outer margins (a few faint fox spots in upper image image), small dampstain to upper left corner (outside plate area). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This very large, finely engraved view is plate 32 from Volume I of the Modern State section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt, its glorious monuments and exotic culture led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown is a view of the Sultan Hassan Mosque in Cairo; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of these views. .
