Baillio-Lamothe
1820. Baillio-Lamothe. Manuscript notebook recording Baillio-Lamothe’s field studies as an engineering student at the École des Mines (Paris). [2], 3-134, [18]pp., plus 5 loose sheets of notes, sketches, etc. in a pocket inside the back cover; lacking the first leaf [pp. 1-2]. Illustrated with numerous technical drawings of mining machinery, plans of mine layouts, etc. N.p., n.d. [1820]. 168 x 114 mm. Bound wallet-style in old vellum manuscript leaf, linen tie, some soiling. First and last leaves a bit soiled, but very good. Laid in is a letter to Baillio dated 8 April 1818, signed by Louis Becquey (1760-1849), Directeur-Général des Ponts et Chaussées et des Mines; the letter names Baillio-Lamothe an “élčve externe” (external pupil) at the École. Remarkable document from the early days of the Industrial Revolution in France, recording field studies at several European coal mines undertaken by Baillio-Lamothe, an engineering student at Paris’s École des Mines. Baillio-Lamothe’s first name and history remain obscure, but he is known to have prepared at least one illustration for the Annales des mines (Vol. 13 [1826]). The Industrial Revolution, which originated in Great Britain in the latter part of the 18th century, did not spread to France until the end of the Napoleonic Era in 1815. One of the major factors in this delay was the primitive state of French coal mining at that time. Technological innovations in manufacturing, such as steam-powered engines and mechanized looms, required coal for their production and use, but most of France’s coal deposits … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Karl Gottlob Kuhn
Leipzig: Libraria Car. Cnoblochii, 1820. These 28 volumes are in various states of preservation. Please see general description for complete details. I am offering for sale a very rare, complete 28-volume edition of "Medicorum Graecorum Opera Quae Exstant," edited by Dr. Karl Gottlob Kuhn (1754-1840), published upon completion of each volume between 1821 and 1830 in Leipzig, Germany. This was a renowned work of scholarship--editing and reprinting, in the original Greek with a companion translation of each work in Latin, all the surviving medical writings from Ancient Greece. The set consists of all the extant works of Galen of Pergamon, in 22 volumes (18 books; with Books 17 and 18 printed in two volumes each); the works of Hippocrates of Kos, in three volumes; the works of Pedanius Dioscorides, in two volumes; and the works of Aretaeus of Cappadocia, in one volume. The books (except for one lacking covers) are bound in white calfskin, with marbled endleaves and page ends. Titles and illustrations are stamped on covers and spines. The stamps on the front covers say "Coll. Reg. Oxon," so I am assuming these books were rebound when the set became the property of the library at Oxford University. On the front endpaper of each volume is a book plate identifying the set as the property of Oxford, and each bookplate bears a stamp saying "Cancelled from the Library at Queen's College, Oxford." The plates also say the set was the gift to the library from of Robert Mason. At some date after the set was withdrawn from the library at Oxford, it became part of the personal library of Z … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELEAZER HUNTINGTON
1820. Scarce early engraving of the Declaration of Independence.ELEAZER HUNTINGTON.Engraved Document. Ca. 1820-1825. Framed 30½ x 35¾ in.Historical BackgroundIn the period following the War of 1812, Americans began to look back for the first time on the nation's founding; the Republic was forty years old, and the generation that had signed the Declaration of Independence was passing away. Many founding documents, such as the debates of the Constitutional Convention, had not been widely published. Even the Declaration of Independence itself, as created, was largely unknown to Americans. Several entrepreneurs, sensing the national mood, set out to print reproductions of the document. The first to do so was a writing master named Benjamin Owen Tyler, who created a decorative version of the Declaration and published it in 1818. Then, in the early 1820s, a Hartford engraver and penmanship author named Eleazer Huntington followed Tyler's example by creating a calligraphic facsimile of the Declaration. Huntington stripped out the ornaments and illustrations that Tyler had added, and reduced the size to make it more affordable.Eleazer Huntington (1789-1852) was born in Connecticut and became an engraver, printer, and publisher in Hartford. He married Maria Hinsdale in 1817, and they had eight children. In 1816, he published Introduction to the Art of Penmanship; or, a New and Improved System of Round and Running Hands, a brief pamphlet of eighteen pages with illustrations, and he published a second edition in 1821. In 1824, he publishedThe American Penman, Comprising th … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELEAZER HUNTINGTON
1820. Scarce early engraving of the Declaration of Independence. ELEAZER HUNTINGTON.Engraved Document. Ca. In 1824, he publishedThe American Penman, Comprising … [Click Below for Full Description]

OFFENBACH, Jacques 1819-1880
1820. Image ca. 150 x 122 mm., overall size 225 x 195 mm. In decorative oval frame gilt. "[Offenbach] was, with Johann Strauss (ii), one of the two composers of outstanding significance in popular music of the 19th century and the composer of some of the most exhilaratingly gay and tuneful music ever written. Moreover, it was through the success of Offenbach's works abroad that operetta became an established international genre, producing outstanding national exponents in Strauss, Sullivan and Lehár and evolving into the 20th-century musical." Andrew Lamb in Grove Music Online. A classic portrait of the great operetta composer, in all likelihood after the image by the noted French photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820-1910), known by the pseudonym Nadar. Nadar photographed a wide range of the most influential figures of the day, including writers Hugo, Baudelaire, Sand, Gautier, and Dumas; painters Corot, Delacroix, and Millet; and musicians Liszt, Rossini, Offenbach, Verdi, and Berlioz. His photographs are held in many major collections. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Shaw, Joshua
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1820. Colored engraving, 12 x 15 1/4 inches to the plate mark on an approximately 14 1/2 x 18-inch sheet. Framed. Scattered light foxing in margins, light toning. Very good. An important and scarce early American color print, based on a painting by Joshua Shaw, a British landscape artist who came to the United States in 1817. He conceived the idea of a published series of American views, which he executed over the next few years and which were published in Philadelphia as a series of nineteen plates entitled PICTURESQUE VIEWS OF AMERICAN SCENERY. The original edition of 1819 was issued by Moses Thomas and exists in only a few copies. The present plate is from the 1820 second issue published by Mathew Carey, also very rare. In this bucolic scene, a pair of river men in a small boat shove off from the bank at a wide point of the upper Schuykill River. In the distance, a few houses dot the farm land on the opposite side of the river, all beneath a partly-sunny, partly-cloudy sky. Complete sets of PICTURESQUE VIEWS... have appeared on the market only twice in the past fifty years and have brought in the neighborhood of $200,000 each time. Individual plates are somewhat less rare, but still very scarce on the market. A wonderful view of a verdant Pennsylvania. Wenzl HOFFMANN: NEUES ABC BUCH IN BRUCHSTÜCKEN FÜR DIE JUGEND HERAUSGEGEBEN. Engraved title plate and 21 plates with a total of 63 hand-coloured engravings, and in parts albumen heightened, as well as captions with different typesets in German, French, Latin, Italian and Czech beneath. Prague: Wenzl Hoffmann [ca. 1820]. 8°. 22 not numbered engraved plates, thread stiched and with contemporary marbled wrappers. Particularly rare multilingual alphabet with gorgeous hand-coloured and partly albumen heightened engravings, depicting mostly animals, flowers, fruits and plants, but also humans in everyday scenes. Contents, Illustrator: The author, illustrator and printer of this outstanding ABC-book, Prague based engraver Wenzl (or Václav František) Hoffmann (died 1858), was specialising in primers, as indicate 2 similar publications in those years (»Neues A-B-C-Büchel« from ca. 1820, with captions in German, Latin, French, Italian, Hebrew and Czech; »Neues deutsches ABC Buch« from 1827, with captions in German and Hebrew, each accompanied with two lines of German verse). Hoffmann also illustrated the Old Testament. He obviously also had a passion for authoritative pedagogics, as indicates a poem incorporated in the title engraving about the ideal of children obedience: „Ich bin ein Kind und weiß noch nicht, mich selbst zu bilden, selbst zu bessern, Gehorsam soll mein Herz vergrößern, und Folgsamkeit sei meine Pflicht." With the printing permission of the Metternich censors incorporated in the title engraving („mit Genehmhaltung der k.k. Censur / No 111"). Condition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Davy, Edmund WITH Gompertz, Benjamin
Bulmer and Nicol, London, 1820. Handsomely rebound full volume. FIRST EDITIONS of two significant papers: Davy describes the first room temperature catalytic reaction & Gompertz describes how he applied the method of fluxions to the development of the science of human mortality. DAVY PAPER: Cousin to Humphry Davy, Edmund Davy's work is of significance in the history of catalysis. Catalysis is perhaps best defined by Berzelius as "the property of exerting on other bodies an action which is very different from chemical affinity. By means of this action, they produce decomposition in bodies, and form new compounds into the composition of which they do not enter." (Wisniak, History of Catalysis, EQ 21, 1, 2010, 60). In the paper offered here, Davy "reported that boiling a mixture of platinum sulfate with alcohol or ether precipitated a black substance in a finely divided state. Heating the powder produced a feeble explosion accompanied by a flash of red light and reduction of the platinum" (ibid). In short, Davy had prepared a finely-divided platinum catalyst of such high activity that it acted at room temperature. "When this catalyst was dropped on to any porous substance moistened with alcohol, oxidation occurred so rapidly that the catalyst became red hot" (Robertson, The Early History of Catalysis). This release of energy from oxidation of the compounds - absent any flame and without change in the platinum itself -- was a clear sign of the catalytic property of platinum. GOMPERTZ PAPER: Benjamin Gompertz was a mathematician and actuary with a keen interest "in the problem o … [Click Below for Full Description]

OWEN Robert
1820s]. First edition, first or early printing. 8vo (194 x 118mm). 47, [1] pp. Original yellow printed wrappers, edges untrimmed (partially unopened, wrappers slightly edge worn, with some minor loss to the lower corner of front wrapper, otherwise a remarkably bright, near fine copy). London, D.B. Cousins. N.d. [but circa An important work by the social reformer and communitarian socialist Robert Owen, being an exposition of the role of charity in his ?new moral world? ?In 1817 Owen began to speak the language of the millennium, and to cast himself in the role of a prophet both of a secular apocalypse, the crisis, and, in his mind's eye, of the new moral world or millennial world which would succeed it, where laws, commerce, religion, war, and self-interest would disappear. He had already suggested in 1813, but now began loudly to proclaim, closely following Paul's letter to the Corinthians, that charity was the core of all religion, and the highest good any individual could attain? (ODNB). Most likely the first, certainly an early printing of these lectures, of which the first dated edition was published by Cousins in 1833. In a slightly speculative note, Thomas places Cousins's undated edition as circa 1820s. An advertisement for a printing of the pamphlet appeared in The Northern Liberation, October 19, 1839.
