ØRSTED [OERSTED], HANS CHRISTIAN
Copenhagen: Andreas Seidelin, 1820. First edition. THE DISCOVERY OF ELECTROMAGNETISM: THE EXTREMELY RARE TRUE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT IN PRINT OF ØRSTED'S DEMONSTRATION OF THE MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF AN ELECTRIC CURRENT, PRECEDING EVEN THE UNOBTAINABLE LATIN PAMPHLET THAT IS GENERALLY REGARDED AS THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF HIS DISCOVERY. In July of 1820 the Danish scientist Hans Christian Ørsted announced his discovery that a magnetized needle could be deflected by an electric current. The discovery created a sensation among European savants, and shortly thereafter Ampère extended Ørsted's work by showing that parallel current-carrying wires repelled or attracted one another, depending upon the direction of the currents in the two wires. A little over a decade later, Faraday showed that moving magnets could induce an electrical current in nearby conducting wires, and by 1865 Maxwell had developed a complete quantitative theory of the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Yet it was Ørsted's discovery that provided the first hint of such a relationship -- a relationship that both stimulated the development of Einstein's special theory of relativity and is now understood as a necessary consequence of that theory. As Nobel Prize winner Edward M. Purcell observed, "Whether the ideas of special relativity could have evolved in the absence of a complete theory of the electromagnetic field is a question for the historian of scientist to speculate about; probably it can't be answered. We can only say that the actual history shows rather plainly a path running from Ørsted's compass n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Belzoni turned his attention instead to the study of hydraulics. Struck by wanderlust and keen to avoid military conscription, he moved first to the Netherlands and then to England, Spain, Portugal and Malta, hoping to find employment as an engineer. Samuel F. Bradford, 1820. Quarto. Half Leather. First American Edition. The maps have been collated against the index: there are 60 folding, or double-page maps (lacking only 1--the map of The United States), 1 single cartographic "plate" and 10 engraved portraits of American statesmen; the "plate" and the portraits are not called for in the index; backed in leather with corners and marbled paper over boards, the book has been tastefully rebacked with most of the original backstrip mounted; the maps are generally toned and foxed, a few more so than others, but are attractive nonetheless; the engraved portraits are similarly toned, a few more so than others; the general index to the Cyclopaedia is included in this volume; digital images can be made available upon request. [ROMILLY, Sir Samuel]
James Ridgway, 1820. First Edition. Hardcover. Tall octavo, 2 volumes. 481pp., 476pp. Both volumes about very good in the publisher's plain paper boards with original spine labels. Corners generally bumped and worn, to varying degrees. Some mild stains to exterior, barely affecting the interior. Small pieces perished from the spine label of volume II, and some wear at crown of the same volume. Doxing to first and last few leaves of both volumes, but it's otherwise quite bright and clean overall. While known to libraries, this two volume set is quite uncommon in the trade (especially in its original boards), and collects many of the famed speeches by the British legal reformer and Abolitionist, whose "Memoirs" are well-known to scholars of British legal history. Very good-. [Attributes: First Edition]
