"The society for the improvement of Prison Discipline, in submitting to the public the following suggestions respecting the proper regulations to be adopted in Prisons, deem it superfluous to detain their readers by endeavouring to prouve what is already obvious, that the judicious mangement of Gaols is a subject of the utmost importance. An intention has been imputed to this society, than which nothing can be more foreign from its real purpose, that of making the interior of a prison a more desirable residence than the habitations of the poor ; the motives which actuate the members of the society are allowed to be benevolent, but the consequences of carrying their views of reform or improvement into effect, are supposed by some persons to be mischievous ; it is presumed that offenders are intimidated, by the miseries and privations they have experienced or anticipate ; if prisons, it is said, are rendered places of comfort, where food and lodging are gratuitously provided, they become incentives to crime and a recompence for its commission. In this view of the subject, however, the society cannot coinc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Susan B. Anthony
An extraordinary rarity, the earliest image of Anthony we have ever seen signed From the housekeeper’s collection and never before offered for sale; Signed images of Anthony are not common. Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 and died in Rochester in 1906. She is perhaps the most widely known suffragist and has become an icon of the women’s suffrage movement. In 1848 she was working as a teacher and headmistress of the female department at Canajoharie Academy in Rochester, New York. She became involved with the teacher’s union when she discovered that male teachers had a monthly salary of $10.00, while the female teachers earned $2.50 a month. Her parents and sister Marry attended the 1848 Rochester Women’s Rights Convention held August 2, just a month after the Seneca Falls convention kicked off the women’s rights movement. Anthony joined that movement in 1852, and devoted the rest of her life to it. In 1854 she circulated petitions for married women's property rights and women’s suffrage. She daringly tried to speak at the U.S. Capitol and Smithsonian Institution in Washington, but was refused permission. She also began her New York State campaign for women’s suffrage, speaking and traveling alone. In 1856 Anthony became agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society, and the next year called for education for women and blacks. So by the time she was in her mid-30s, she was in the forefront of the movement. Margaret E. O’Neil (known as Maggie) was educated in Geneva, New York which is near Rochester, and passed her exam for a regent’s certific … [Click Below for Full Description]

H. Sotherans & Co., 36 Piccadilly, London. Full leather, bound by Tout, 2 Volumes, all edges gilt. Five raised bands, extensive gilt tooling and silk endpapers and pastedowns with floral designs. 2 original watercolors by Rowlandson and 162 hand-colored engravings and images of caricatures by Rowlandson and Woodward. One watercolor entitled "Dr. Syntax and The Gypsies" (6.9" x 4.65") and the other titled "The Cobbler." (4" x 5.1") The first was most surely created for the volume "THE SECOND TOUR OF DOCTOR SYNTAX" which was published in 1820 by William Combe. An assemblage of illustrations, Bookseller David Brass states "Victorian binder Samuel Tout worked out of Nassau Street in Soho, London 1868-79. He then partnered with William Coward in a bindery in Whitechapel but in 1880 continued on his own in the same location." Each volume is stamped "Tout, Binder" along the lower gilt ruling on the inside cover, and "H. Sotherans & Co., 36 Piccadilly" along the upper left edge of the tooling on the same inside cover. Circa 1880-1900. Rowlandson (1757-1827) has produced two very detailed images, here included. It seems quite likely that this two-volumes compilation was crafted by Sotherans from images in stock and sent for binding to Tout. VG with the slightest of scuffing to the covers [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Erotica]
Frankreich, 1820. Dieser in einigen Varianten gedruckte Kartensatz markiert laut Hoffmann den Beginn der Kostümspielkarte; Chatto (Facts and Speculations on the origin and history of playing cards, London 1848, S. 257) lobt die Darstellungen als "the best of the costume cards that I have seen". [Click Below for Full Description]

Decorated Paper.
Germany or Italy, 18th century. Embossed in a floral design, sized & dusted with gold, and color stenciled in a diagonal pattern in blues, yellow, orange, and pink. Decorated area measures 15 x 12 inches (on a sheet 16 1/2 x 14). Previously folded in half (as usual). About fine. In this example, the stencils weren't positioned perfectly; some colors are clearly observable in the left margin, with an uncolored right margin. These beautiful papers were created in Germany and Italy throughout the 18th century, until about 1820. Craftsmen in both countries freely borrowed each other's designs. Earlier papers were used as book covers; later, their use extended to endpapers. These papers were always stored folded in half, survivors have a fold line. Full, unused sheets are rare.

Small folding leporello with 22 hand-drawn pen, ink, and watercolor illustrations, all with black outline and gouache coloring likely all from one hand and to recto only, reading right to left, depicting a number of scenes of traditional Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture and highlighting the work of physicians and herbalists. Some foxing, soiling, and faint dampstaining throughout, a couple of pages with obvious crude repairs, margins trimmed at some point. Rebacked and conserved. 8vo., total sheet length approx. 113.75 inches. Black lacquered wooden boards, slightly scuffed and mildly warped. N.p. (Fuzhou, China) n.d. (circa 1820s). Some of the depictions within this scarce instructional manuscript include a traditional pharmacist with his herbs, packaged medicine, herbal remedies, and male and female patients with illnesses identified and acupuncture points noted to treat their specific diseases. References within the Chinese text suggest that the manuscript was either composed in Fuzhou or at the very least refers to the medical practices of the area. A fascinating, fragile, and presumably rare album which provides a unique insight into traditional Chinese medical and teaching methods, pharmacology, herbs, and acupuncture.

Bérard Cyprien (Nodier)
Bérard Cyprien (Nodier) . Lord Ruthwen ou les vampires . Paris, Ladvocat .1820. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

WHITNEY, John.
1820. London, Printed in the Year 1700. [But Covent Garden, R.H. Burn, Printed by J. Johnson]. 1820. Small 8vo., in full red morocco, boards with double gilt fillet and blind rules, central gilt rococco style cartouche of fish (from an known ornament for Thomas Gosden), spine with raised bands bordered in gilt and blind, lettered in gilt, gilt ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt. Printed thoughout on vellum. Second edition, after the very rare privately printed edition of 1700. Limited edition of "not more that 100 copies", this one of only 2 copies printed on vellum, with printed limitation thus on verso of title-page, and with an inserted sheet at the front with a manuscript note "Only two copies of this book printed on vellum expressly for Mr Simonds Higgs of Kensington and Mr T. Gosden of St. Martin's Lane" The appearance of the Gosden tool on the boards would suggest that this was the copy given to Thomas Gosden. However, in the sale catalogue for the library of noted bibliophile William Simonds Higgs (Sotheby's 1830), lot 58 comprised this work which sold for 3 guineas. Frustratingly the binding is not described but there is a note of a manuscript leaf that is identically worded to that in this copy. Each copy may have had matching manuscript leaves, or Gosden may have also bound Simonds Higg's copy. Whichever copy this is, it nonetheless is a real rarity, with a fine provenance coming from one of two important piscatorial libraries. The original 1700 edition is a noted rarity in the canon of fishing books, the last copy at auction fetching £20,000 in 2012.

HANSON, James, Captain.
London: For T. Baker, 1820. Octavo (224 x 138 mm). Recent dark brown half morocco, matching marbled boards, black morocco label, single gilt rules framing the spine bands and to spine and corner edges, endleaves renewed, untrimmed. Lightly toned throughout, map bound in a little tightly and slightly offset onto title, but overall a very good, tall copy with the errata leaf. Folding map frontispiece of the route "across the desert from Kosseir to Khennah", 6 pages of musical notation at end ("Canzonetta. Arranged for two voices by Lady Torrens"), 2 pages in the text (pp. 106-07: "Arab Boat Songs on the Nile"). First and only edition of this engaging and elusive account. Hanson, described on the title page as "Late Assistant Quarter-Master-General with the Field Army of the Madras Establishment", acted as ADC to Sir Miles Nightingall, commander-in-chief of the Bombay Army, on his return home from India in 1819. The party sailed on the East Indiaman ship-sloop "Teignmouth" from Bombay to Suez via the Red Sea but were grounded on a sandbank in the Gulf of Aden. Having successfully re-floated they headed for Jeddah where they were welcomed by the Turkish governor, newly installed following the restoration of Ottoman rule in Egypt. Having taken advice from Henry Salt, consul-general in Egypt, they decided on an overland route across the desert that would take in the "most interesting and marvellous ruins" at Thebes. The map describes the route from Kosseir (modern day Quseer on the Red Sea) westwards inland to Kennah (Qena) on the Nile, just east of Dendera, passing ruined forts, … [Click Below for Full Description]
