Crawford, John William Roy]; [Cruikshank, Isaac Robert (Illustrator)]
Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill [printed by Thomas Davison, Whitefriars], London, 1820. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management. . .is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George, who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens. This edition was ori … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plunket, Katharine
1820. The drawings are stuck in an album with manuscript title: "Scrap book from Ballymascanlon". There are small initials in a different hand under this which appear to read (?) H.F.McC. The drawings are in pencil, ink, & water colour. They range in size from approx. 6.5 x 3.5 inches (16.5 x 9 cms. approx.) to 23.75 x 7.25 inches approx (60 x 18.5 cms. approx). Each drawing is stuck at the corner and few have torn at the corners and a small number have occasional stains. A few are loose. None are signed, but all are captioned under each image in black ink in a neat hand, different to the hand of the person who initialed the scrap book at the beginning. Among the images are Chateau de Rauchenstein Baden, Austria; a number of views of Nice, Chamouni, France; the descent into Finale, Italy; Napl;es from Capo Di Monti, Rome from Monte Mario, Vallombrosa Monastery, Camaldoli Hermitage, Naples, Castel a Mara, Castle a Mare, View near Sorrento, Florence from San Miniato, Ponte all Caraja, Florence, Genoa, Pont a Mare & Lung Arno, Pisa, numerous images of Rome, Lucca, Italy; St. Helena Valley & other scenes, numerous around Baden Baden in Austria; Zurich, Chateau de Chillon, Geneva from the Lyons Road, Berne, Lausanne, Via Mala, Switzerland & more. A treatise on adulterations of food, and culinary poisons, exhibiting the fraudulent sophistications of bread, beer, wine, spirituous liquors, tea, coffee, cream, confectionary, vinegar, mustard, pepper, cheese, olive oil, pickles, and other articles employed in domestic economy. And the methods of detecting them. The second edition. By Freidrich Christian Accum Published London : Sold by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, Paternoster Row, 1820. 2], xxiv, 360 pages. Hardcover in papercovered boards, Spine is severely chipped with loss at the top. Front cover is attached, but barely. The outer binding is very interesting (see pics). This copy belonged to Accum's daughter - her personal bookplate is on the front pastedown. A remarkable work with a strong association. One of the first exposures of food adulteration, the sensational conclusions of which caused the author to exile himself for some time from England. This was the first systematic and "thoroughly dispassionate" survey of the growing problem of food adulteration. Among the many frauds Accum exposed were the use of alum for whitening inferior grades of flour; the use of cheap substitutes, sometimes poisonous, for malt and hops in the brewing of beer; tea that was manufactured from native English hedgerows; the poisonous pickles which owed their green color to copper; the nutty flavor in wines produced by bitter almonds, the rind of Gloucester cheese colored with vermillion and red lead; and the pepper adulterated with the sweepings of the warehouse floors. His book attracted immediate public attention. The first … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Nugent Bell
London: Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. Scarce. First edition. This copy was owned by the author Henry H Gibbs, dated 1851 and he has in a very neat copperplate added some marginalia and extended the family tree on the reverse of the folding plate as pictured. Earl of Huntingdon is a title, which has been created several times in the Peerage of England. The title is chiefly associated with the Hastings family. "The genealogical account of the family is wholly recomposed from the most authentic sources, and the singular circumstances attending the establishment of the claim to the title . are detailed with more spirit and vivacity than truth" - Lowndes. The previous owner has updated the family tree along with some marginalia on page 343. The binding is firm. The inner hinges have been reinforced. There is seem wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. The pages are generally clean and bright with some minor spotting. There is a small closed tear on the front endpaper. There are institutional nameplates on the front endpapers, as well as an ink inscription. There are institutional ink stamps on some of the pages. Overall Condition: Very Good. 'To which is prefixed a genealogical and biographical history of the illustrious House of Hastings, including a memoir of the present earl and his family'. Henry Nugent Bell (1792-1822) was an Irish genealogist. Bell followed the profession of a legal antiquary, and, in order to obtain a recognised status, entered himself at the Inner Temple, 17 Nov. 1818. In the same year he acquired considerable distinction by his successful advocacy of the claim of Mr. Hastings to the long-dormant earldom of Huntingdon; the estates, however, were legally invested in the Earl of Moira's family. Bell published a detailed account of the proceedings in The Huntingdon Peerage, and the narrative of his various adventures, which are given at length, displays a suspicious luxuriance of imagination not altogether in keeping with what professed to be a grave genealogical treatise. To the unsold copies a new title- page was affixed in 1821, with a genealogical table and additional portraits. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound, rubbed in places. Giovanni Battista Belzoni was one of the most colourful figures of the early nineteenth century. Born at Padua in 1778, in his youth he considered a monastic career, but with Napoleon's conquering army entering Rome in 1798 and forcing Pope Pius VI into exile, this was not an opportune period to join the church. Belzoni turned his attention instead to the study of hydraulics. Struck by wanderlust and keen to avoid military conscription, he moved first to the Netherlands and then to England, Spain, Portugal and Malta, hoping to find employment as an engineer. When he returned to England in 1819, Belzoni offered an account of his adventures to one of the l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scott, Sir Walter
Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co, 1820. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 3 volumes: 298 [306] pp.; 327 pp.; 371 pp. The three volumes are three quarter-bound in green morocco over textured green cloth with twin gold rules on the borders on both front and rear boards, spine with 5 gilt raised bands and gilt design and lettering, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Bound by Riviere & Son with later professional strengthening to the joints. Lacking the half-titles in volume 1 and volume 2, advertisements at the end of volume 3 are not bound in (fly titles present in all 3 volumes). Volumes 2 and 3 correspond to the first issue of the first edition as specified in Todd & Bowden. Volume 1 has the pagination error indicative of the first edition and 'toilsome' at xv.3 which is indicative of the first issue; however, the figures called for on the sheets vary between what is specified for the first and second issue (sheets A, F, I-P, and S-Y correspond to what is called for in the first issue, sheets B-E and G correspond to what is called for in the second issue, and sheets Q and R do not correspond to any in Todd & Bowden). An attractive set of Scott's best known novel, a historical romance set in 12th century England. Worthington (8); Todd & Bowden 140Aa. The green leather has mellowed to a rich brown on the spines, a few traces of rubbing and trivial wear to the boards, the vast majority of the leaves are quite clean (a few have hints of foxing).

With Ivanhoe Walter Scott gave birth to the historical novel and it is credited with the revival of courtly romance novels and medievialism; Cardinal John Henry Newman claimed that Scott "had first turned men's minds in the direction of the middle ages".The legendary Robin Hood, in the novel initially known under the name of Locksley, is also a character in the story, as are his "merry men", including Friar Tuckand and Little John. The character that Scott gave to Robin Hood in Ivanhoe helped shape the modern notion of this figure as a cheery, decent, patriotic and noble outlaw.Ivanhoe … [Click Below for Full Description]

KELSALL, Charles.
Geneva: printed for the author by Manget and Cherbuliez, 1820. Large octavo. Uncut in original wrappers, paper label to spine. Refurbished with covers reinforced and repaired. Covers rubbed, spine creased, small marginal hole to p. 115-9. A very good copy. Large folding engraved frontispiece after Kelsall, 3 engraved plates, 1 lithograph. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "The Rev. Ed. Hornby from the Author". The book was then re-presented, with an inscription below reading "George Hornby given me by my sister November 1826". This Italian grand tour account by the architect Charles Kelsall (1782–1857) is characteristically wide-ranging and digressive, including designs for a monument to Cicero in the Amalthea at Arpino. The author had been amazed to discover that none existed there; he had previously published a translation of Cicero's prosecution of Caius Verres, and dedicates this book to the lovers of Cicero's memory. Manuel Abad y Queipo
Imprenta de Vega y Compañia, 1820. In-4º. (1)f + 62pp. Bound in full old cartonee. Manuel Abad and Queipo (Villarpedre, Grandas de Salime, Asturias August 26, 1751 - Convent of Sisla (Toledo), 1824), was an Asturian religious who served as bishop of Michoacán in Mexico, also became a minister in Spain. In 1816 he was appointed Minister of Grace and Justice by Fernando VII, although he only held his office for three days, as he was dismissed. After the uprising and criticizing the Spanish action had to face several accusations before the Inquisition in Spain, despite his position against the uprising and excommunicated the insurgent Miguel Hidalgo. Finally, he was acquitted of the accusation of treason against the crown, but the Sacred Congregation of the Index prohibited his work entitled Brief exhibition on the Royal Board and on the rights of the elected bishops of America, which by virtue of the real offices of presentation and government administer their churches before the pontifical confirmation. In 1820 he was elected bishop of Tortosa, although he held the office informally during the Liberal Triennium, since he did not receive papal confirmation. In 1823, persecuted, again, by the absolutists, he was imprisoned in the Toledan monastery of Sisla, where he spent his last two years of life and where he died before serving the sentence of 6 years that had been imposed. Lexington, Ky.: Printed for the Author by W.G. Hunt, 1820. [2],[5]-90pp. Stitched, as issued, lacking wrappers. Stitching perished, title-page and initial text leaf detached. Final three leaves damaged and stained, affecting text of final leaf; small chips and tears at edges. Institutional blind stamp at lower right of titlepage. Evenly tanned, scattered light foxing and dampstaining. Good, in original condition. Untrimmed. In a red half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. This pioneering and excessively rare work by the polymath naturalist Constantine Rafinesque is one of the first extensive scientific studies of the fish of the Ohio River, their nomenclature, their characteristics, and, in some cases, their penchant for the angler's hook. Originally published serially in the periodical WESTERN REVIEW from December 1819 to November 1820, this its first publication complete in book form and is of legendary rarity. Born in Constantinople in 1783, Rafinesque traveled through the United States from 1802 to 1804, and returned as a permanent resident in 1815. He became a professor of natural history at the University of Kentucky in the early 1820s, and authored a large number of works on a wide variety of subjects, making a significant contribution to American botany in particular. His chaotic methods led to the extreme rarity of many of his writings, and he died a pauper in 1840. Nevertheless, many of his scientific opinions, viewed as radical at the time, are widely accepted today. This work is one of the cornerstones of Rafinesque's ichthyological reputation and is exce … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: John Murray, 1820. 3 volumes, octavo. Original buff paper-covered boards, printed paper labels to spines. Housed in a black cloth flat back solander box. Slightly rubbed, some minor chips at the heads and tails of the spines, spines mildly creased, upper joint of volume III starting, two leaves in volume I badly opened with slight marginal loss, and a few others leaves with minor splits, but overall an exceptional set. 22 plates, 6 of them hand-coloured, 5 of these being aquatints, of which 2 are folding panoramas – Zante and Smyrna – and one being a double-sided facsimile, 2 folding maps, illustrations to the text. All half-titles present. First and only edition of what Atabey describes as "this important work" and Blackmer a "very interesting work." Turner's "chatty" account includes observations on local manners and customs; an account of a meeting and conversation with Ali Pasha; and lengthy descriptions of two visits to Cyprus. Decidedly uncommon, exceedingly so in boards. Turner's father was a friend of George Canning, to whom this book is dedicated, who obtained a clerkship in the Foreign Office for William in 1809. In 1811 he was attached to the embassy of Robert Liston and accompanied him to Constantinople. Turner "remained in the East for five years, and during that time visited most parts of the Ottoman empire, as well as the islands and mainland of Greece. CHINESE SCHOOL].
Canton 2nd half of 19th century. A set of 6 studies in watercolour and gouache on pith paper, edged in turquoise silk ribbon and laid on paper; glazed and framed. An exquisite group of interior scenes, exclusively of noblewomen and ladies in waiting, engaging in various genteel activities, such as flower arranging, painting, poetry reading and writing, surrounded by elegant Qing dynasty furniture and ornaments, including unusual asymmetrical display cabinets, exotic bird swings, and porcelain vases, all standing or sitting on elaborately patterned silk carpets. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the Ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

VIGNY (Alfred de). Né à Loches. 1797-1863.
