London: Harvey and Darton, 1820. [18] leaves, printed on one side only, the first and last pasted to the wrappers. Pages [2] and [35] bearing lower and upper case alphabets, the remainder having two images per pages with engraved captions beneath each. Original printed red wrappers. Oblong: 90 x 118 mm. First edition thus, the images having first been published by Darton in a two volume work of the same title, published in 1807. Small piece missing from title, just affecting part of calligraphic device; inscribed: 'A gift to little Josi' on verso of title, and in the same hand, on opposite blank recto, 'Emelia Dickson 24th Dec. 1822.' Two 19th century manuscript books of illustrated limericks by the same hand, The first, titled Anecdotes (from memory) of Sixteen Wonderful Old Women Dedicated (by Permission) to Miss Stuart - by a celebrated Historical Portrait Painter, is a reworking of John Harris's, History of Sixteen Wonderful Old Women, published in 1820, The verses are the same, though the pen & ink illustrations differ greatly. The second work, The History of Sixteen Wonder Old Men. Written A designed as a Companion to the History of Sixteen Wonderful Old Women, is not, as one might suppose, a reworking of E. Marshall publication of 1821, Anecdotes and Adventures of fifteen Gentlemen, but would appear to an entirely original work. Neither book is signed or dated, but there is a watermark of 1827 in the second work. The first work is rather tired and has many turned corners; the second work is a very good condition.

1820. "Primary Sources on the Spanish Colonialism Mostly in the Florida Peninsula". 16 documents, 48 pages. A collection of primary sources on Spanish Colonialism in the Florida peninsula and surrounding territories. Spanish Florida refers to the Spanish territory of La Florida, which was the first major European land claim and attempted settlement in North America during the European ÂÂÂ"Age of DiscoveryÂÂÂ". La Florida formed part of the Captaincy General of Cuba, the Viceroyalty of New Spain, and the Spanish Empire during Spanish Colonization of the Americas. While it had no clearly defined boundaries, the territory was much larger than the present-day state of Florida, extending over to much of what is now the southeastern United States, including all ofpresent-day Florida plus portions of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and south eastern Louisiana. Pensacola was founded on the western Florida panhandle in 1698, strengthening Spanish claims to that section of the territory. Spanish control of the Florida peninsula was made possible by the collapse of native cultures during the 17th century. Several Native American groups (including the Timucua, Calusa, Tequesta, Apalachee, Tocobaga, and the Ais people) had been long established residents of Florida, and most resisted Spanish incursions into their land. However, conflict with Spanish expeditions, riads by the English and their native allies, and (especially) diseases brought from Europe resulted in a drastic decline in the population of all the indigenous peoples of Florida, and large swaths of the peninsu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mendelssohn, Moses (6 September 1729 - 4 January 1786)
Moshe Zirndorffer, Furth, 1820. In Hebrew and German in Hebrew characters. (2), 127 leaves. 20 x 13 cm. 3/4 leather and marbled boards. All edges dyed red. Moses Mendelssohn was a German Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the Haskalah, the 'Jewish enlightenment' of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is indebted. Born to a poor Jewish family in Dessau, Principality of Anhalt, and originally destined for a rabbinical career, Mendelssohn educated himself in German thought and literature and from his writings on philosophy and religion came to be regarded as a leading cultural figure of his time by both Christian and Jewish inhabitants of German-speaking Europe and beyond. He also established himself as an important figure in the Berlin textile industry, which was the foundation of his family's wealth. His descendants include the composers Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn; Felix's son, chemist Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy; Fanny's grandsons, Paul and Kurt Hensel; and the founders of the Mendelssohn & Co. banking house. His father's name was Mendel, and it was Moses who adopted the surname Mendelssohn ("Mendel's son"). Moses's son Abraham Mendelssohn wrote in 1829 (to Felix), "My father felt that the name Moses Ben Mendel Dessau would handicap him in gaining the needed access to those who had the better education at their disposal. Without any fear that his own father would take offense, my father assumed the name Mendelssohn. The change, though a small one, was decisive." Mendel was an impoverished sofer Stam, a scribe. Moses in his boyhood developed curvature of the spine. Moses … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLANCHE, James Robinson: (POLIDORI, John William)
1820. PLANCHE, James Robinson: (POLIDORI, John William). "The Vampire" Or, The Bride of The Isles. FIRST TIME. Theatre Royal, English Opera House, Strand. This Evening, Monday, August 7th, 1820. London, 1820. THE TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE OF "THE VAMPIRE" ON THE ENGLISH STAGE. Broadside, 12-7/8" x 8-1/2", edges slightly rumpled but apparently untrimed, closed tear to left foredge approximately 3-1/2" long, left side of paper with stab holes presumably bound up at one time, mild toning but overall VERY GOOD. As stated on the playbill "This piece is founded on the various traditions concerning THE VAMPIRES, which assert that they are Spirits, depraved of all Hope of Futurity, by the crimes committed in their mortal state - but, that they are permitted to roam the Earth, in whatever forms they please, with supernatural powers of Fascination - and, that they cannot be destroyed, so long as they sustain their dreadful existence, by imbibing the blood of female victims, whom they are first compelled to marry." Opening night reviews were enthusiastic and "was honored with unusually long continued applause". An interesting link between "The Vampire" and "Frankenstein" is that Peter Thomas Cooke who played the title role in The Vampyre at the Theatre Royale in 1820, was also the first actor to play the Frankenstein Monster in the London staging of Presumption. In fact, in 1826 a theatre-goer in London could take in a double bill and be treated to both monsters. Planche's play "The Vampire" was an adaptation of John Polidori's story "The Vampyre" - or, rather, a translation/adaptation of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wied-Neuwied, Max Prinz zu, German explorer, ethnologist and naturalist (1782-1867).
Neuwied, 29. III. 1820. 2 pp. on double leaf. 8vo. Mounted on flyleaf of: The same. Reise nach Brasilien in den Jahren 1815 bis 1817. Frankfurt/M., Heinrich Ludwig Brönner, 1820-1821. 2 pts. in 1 vol. Large 4to. XXXIV, (2), 380, (6) pp. XVIII, 345, (1) pp. With 19 engr. plates. Contemp. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to attractively gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Interesting letter (in German) to an unidentified professor, accompanying the first edition of his work on Brazil. Very likely to his former academic teacher in Göttingen, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), under whom the author had read natural history in 1811-12: "Dearest professor, please accept this small token of my deep gratitude and veneration, and exercise forbearance when looking upon this product borne forth not by a scholar, but by a mere dilettante of descriptive zoology [.] The printer has retained a large number of obvious errors which unfortunately were in the manuscript, by fault of the copyist [.]". - Following the example set by the Humboldts, the Rhenish Prince Max zu Wied made significant contributions to botany, zoology, and ethnology through two long and well-documented expeditions, lasting several years. He led an expedition to Brazil in 1815-17, studying flora, fauna, and the native population. The prince was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Jena in 1858. - Letter shows slight edge damage to centerfold (no loss to text); some browning and traces of original folds. Book variously browned due to paper; the beautiful binding is very well preserved. Without … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work marked the beginning of a series of comparative embryological and paleontological studies that led to the discovery of the intermediary stages between the primitive structures of the splanchno-cranium and the middle ear auditory ossicles of mammals - a brilliant step in demonstrating the links between isolated facts and continuity in the evolution of structure and function" (DSB). - Stempel auf Titel. CHILDRENS' SCRAPBOOK
[England]: circa, 1820. Single leaf from a child's scrapbook, 215 x 260 mm., the engravings and captions neatly cut-out and pasted down, views to both sides of the sheet; foxing and tears to the edges with marginal loss, but charming. Framed. Marvellous page from a child's scrap book with a naïve scene depicting "Natives pursuing Kangaroos in the neighbourhood of Sydney...". Perhaps as had always been intended, in this example the figures and captions have been carefully cut out and pasted on to a blank album page. We have still not been able to identify the name of the book or album from which the sheet was taken, but it is interesting to speculate as to the original source image. One plausible contender is the scene of "Natives of Botany Bay" from Phillip's Voyage (1789), but perhaps the most likely is the "Hunting the Kangaroo" plate published in Foreign Field Sports (1813). The warrior at far left certainly bears some resemblance to the latter, although it has to be said that the second warrior and the background are both very different, as are the kangaroos, which are here represented as amiable and doe-eyed, one with a pair of joeys peeking from her pouch. On the verso is a bloodthirsty scene from the same series, "A Lion attacking a herd of Zebras". This is a rare image. The State Library of New South Wales lists an uncoloured sheet, while the Nan Kivell collection has a coloured version (NK 1350); the latter was exhibited in the World Upside Down in 2000, where the tentative date of circa 1820 was suggested. Our example has very similar but not identical colouring t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baltimore: Printed and Sold by Benjamin Edes, 1820. 29, [1 blank] pp. Stitched into plain modern wrappers. 'Second Edition' printed prominently at the head of the title. Uniformly toned, untrimmed. Blank inner margin of title leaf reinforced and spotted. Last leaf reinforced at the margins. Good+. "Hutton and Hull twice tried to rob the mail coach and decided upon one more attempt. Hutton made Hull agree to murder the driver should he recognize him. After they had secured the money they deliberately murdered the driver, thinking they had been recognized" [McDade]. The first edition, which also issued in 1820, contained 20 pages. Cohen says that, except for the addition of the Appendix in our offering, the contents are identical. The Appendix of this rare printing includes Hull's confession, particulars of the execution, Hull's Address, and his reply to the Judge. Our copy is rare. McDade 497. Cohen 12730. Hohman, Johann Georg
Gedruckt für den Verfasser, Reading, Pa, 1820. 100pp. Contemporary half calf and patterned boards. Boards and corners worn; spine rubbed, ends lightly chipped. Moderately foxed, some light staining. Very good. A legendary work of Pennsylvania German folk magic and remedies, in its exceedingly rare first edition. This publication (probably based on earlier works of folk magic in the European tradition such as the various works attributed to Albertus Magnus), was reprinted many times and became closely associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch magic tradition known as Braucherei. Often referred to as the "pow-wow book" in translation (indeed, still in print today), it is a work of broad appeal, as so many of the spells, recipes, and remedies are universally applicable to rural concerns, especially those pertaining to both human and animal health. The supposedly occult powers of the book figure in works of fiction as well. Not surprisingly, this first edition appears rarely, for all editions saw heavy use. AUSTIN 922. SHOEMAKER 1642. Autograph Letter Signed, to Samuel Bard, November 26, 1820. 4 pp. plus autograph address to "Doctor Samuel Bard / Hyde Park / Dutchess County" with manuscript and stamped philatelic markings. 8 1/8 x 10 in. This outstanding letter discusses both early Columbia University medical school administration and early nineteenth-century medicine. The writer served as the doctor for the duels that resulted in the deaths of both Philip and Alexander Hamilton. He was also the founder of the first botanical garden in America, where Rockefeller Center now stands. He sold it to New York State to be given to Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, which transferred it to Columbia University (they sold the land for $400 million in 1985) and another which is now the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. Complete Transcript New York Novr 26th 1820Dear sir I am happy to hear that you still find your health improved. your Rheumatic complains will doubtless occasionally be renewed during the continuance of cold weather. I cannot but believe that it is a wise measure on your part to abandon the duties and with them the cares and anxieties of your station in the College. I do not however think it necessary that for this purpose you should resign the office. I am persuaded the Regents have but one wish on that head and certainly it would also be the desire of the majority of the Trustees of the College that you should continue to hold it. The duties to be performed it is expected under the circumstances of your absence or ill health will be rendered by those next in office and for which … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Sehr seltenes Blatt. [Crawford, John William Roy]; [Cruikshank, Isaac Robert (Illustrator)]
London: Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill [printed by Thomas Davison, Whitefriars], 1820. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Cruikshank, Isaac Robert. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management. . .is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons.
