John Scott
United Kingdom: This wonderful volume of engravings and descriptions is bound in marbled paper and leather. The leather is quite worn, the paper moderately scuffed. The edges are bare, the backstrip is half missing, the half that is remaining is quite chipped. It should be possible for a binder to replace the backstrip without rebinding the whole book. There is a bookplate from William Fuller Maitland MP and art collector on the inside cover and a small bookstore sticker as well. There is foxing on the interior, mostly around the plates and across from them. Sherwood, Neely and Jones 1820 first edition. [Attributes: First Edition]

He specialised in depiction of horses. Vernet worked with lithography and made many prints in this medium. Good, given age. No margins, cut to the image. Stieglitz, Heinrich, Schriftsteller und Bibliothekar, mit der romantischen Dichterin Charlotte Willhöfft verheiratet (1801-1849).
Göttingen, 4. Juni, 1820. 3 SS. 4to. Was macht die Tonkunst? [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLFORD, Margaret.
Printed for Rodwell & Martin. 1820. FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. Half titles vols II & III, not in vol. I, as issued. Uncut in orig. pink boards; expertly rebacked with appropriate white paper spines, vols I & II retaining orig. repaired paper spine labels, vol. III with replacement facsimile label. Each vol. with the signature of Eliza Giffard, Nerquis Flintshire, on leading pastedown, and further inscribed by her on titlepage. Vol. I also inscribed 'From the author'. A very nice copy. Summers p.67. Copac lists four copies in the UK: BL, Cambridge, Bristol & Leeds; OCLC adds Oxford. This is a typically melodramatic gothic novel, set in late mediaeval Germany and peopled with a cast of enigmatic characters, among them the 'very beautiful' Lady Louisa, the 'sly looking Cardinal Zoraschi', a kidnapped nun, a scheming monk, and 'a dwarfish ideot [sic] boy' named Rolf. This was Holford's first novel, following several volumes of poetry she had thus far presented to the English reading public. The work is intriguing for its thinly-disguised portrayal of Lord Byron in the titular figure of Baron Warbeck. Holford was friendly with Robert Southey and Joanna Baillie (to whom the work is dedicated), and evidently shared their contempt for Lord Byron, portraying the worst of him in the novel's chief antagonist. Warbeck is aloof, flamboyant, compulsive and reckless, prone to selfishness and self-indulgence; he is bullying, promiscuous, spiteful, atheistic, and hedonistic; he subjects his wife to humiliation and ridicule; he is unfaithful and vain, and there is even a suggestion of sexual dev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1820. [Double] elephant folio (ca. 71 x 53 cm). Title page, one unnumbered chart (legend) and 37 engraved plates, numbered 1, 50-83, 96-97, of which plates 1, 51-52, 54, 57-58, 61, 79 double-sized, folded, and plate 68 even somewhat larger - double folded. Second edition. A suite of spectacular plates depicting antiquities in Egypt, as observed by members of the French scientific expedition to Egypt, which was part of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaign (1798-1801). Many buildings, it appears, were in a much better condition than they are today. The French cartographer, engineer, and archaeologist Edme-François Jomard (1777-1862) "...edited the Description de L'Égypte and was a member of the Institut d'Egypte established by Napoleon. He supervised the educational and cultural mission sent to France from Egypt by Muhammad Ali of Egypt....The publication of the landmark, outsized Description de l'Égypte (Description of Egypt) was decreed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. This seminal publication on Egyptology was a collaboration effort of some 150 prominent French scientist and scholars and 2,000 technicians and artists. It is the record of Bonaparte's Commission des Sciences et des Arts that accompanied the ill-fated French campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798-1801). Jomard was one of the founding members of the Société de Géographie in Paris" (Wikipedia). Plate 1 is a double-sized map of an island in the river Nile. Oersted, John (Hans) Christian
Printed by C. Baldwin for Baldwin, Cradock & Joy. First Edition. Hardcover. The first edition in English of Oersted's magnum opus (pp. 273-276), preceded by a small Latin pamphlet (Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electici in acum magneticum) also published in 1820. This work laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics with the work of Michael Faraday following soon after and later Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of the original Latin publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Oersted himself realized the importance of an English translation as attested to by the note at the beginning of this paper: "Translated from a printed account drawn up in Latin by the author, and transmitted by him to the Editor of the Annals of Philosophy." "...[Oersted] had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 ... He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism, and to prove their existence by experiment ... In the winter of 1819-1820, he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current carrying wire and saw the needle was disturbed.
