LIVERMORE, Mary Ashton
LIVERMORE, MARY ASHTON. (1820-1905). American journalist, author, reformer and suffragette; the only female reporter at the Republican convention that nominated Lincoln, she also delivered the opening address at the first women's suffrage convention in Chicago. SP. ("Mary A. Livermore"). 1p. Cabinet. N.p. (Boston), N.d. An uncommon bust portrait by Hardy of Boston darkly signed on the lower portion of the image. Born in Boston, Livermore attended a female seminary in Charlestown before her experiences as a tutor on a Virginia plantation made her an ardent abolitionist and supporter of Lincoln, on whose behalf she campaigned in 1860. She was the only female reporter at the Republican convention that nominated Lincoln, which she covered on behalf of the Universalist newspaper New Covenant, of which her husband was editor. During the Civil War, she provided relief to the wounded, volunteering for the Sanitary Commission, inspecting hospitals and raising money. Livermore's post-war efforts were on behalf of women's suffrage and temperance. In 1869, she founded and edited the Chicago feminist journal The Agitator which merged with the Women's Journal in Boston the following year. She served as president of the Association for Advancement of Women, the American Woman Suffrage Association and the Massachusetts Woman?s Christian Temperance Union. HONE, William
HONE, William. The Queen's Matrimonial Ladder, A National Toy, With Fourteen Step Scenes: And Illustrations In Verse, With Eighteen Other Cuts.By The Author Of "The Political House That Jack Built". 25th Edition, London. Printed By And For William Hone, Ludgate-Hill. 1820.The Pamphlet And The Toy Together One Shilling.Pp24 including cover wraps and last two pages advertisements. Approx 22cm x 13.5cm. Fore edges unevenly trimmed, some staining and dustiness, the odd corner folded and lacking, recently resewn. With the very uncommon ladder "toy", folding printed pasteboard approx 15.1 cm x 6.3 cm, which matches the progress of Caroline of Brunswick's unhappy marriage to King George IV. The "steps" of the marriage ladder according to Hone were ; Qualification, Declaration, Acceptation, Alteration, Imputation, Exculpation, Emigration, Remigration,Consternation, Accusation, Publication, Indignation,Coronation, and finally Degradation. The pamphlet is a little worn as usual, the ladder in Very Good plus condition. A previous owner has added ink names under the illustrations on pp 4 & 5. This is a wonderfully scurrilous pamphlet, describing a scandalous episode in British constitutional history which created a huge furore at the time, with great public support for Caroline's cause. This is not an uncommon pamphlet, but the accompanying ladder is very hard to find in any condition.

Dolby's Parliamentary Register
London: T Dolby, 1820. In his attempt to deprive his estranged wife of her title, the newly crowned George IV unwittingly turned her into a focus for anti-government and anti-monachical sentiment. The trial of the presumptive Queen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response, Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy. The first volume contains the prosecution, the second the defence. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this first issue being scarce. The pagination carries from the Dolby Parliamentary Register. The relevant sections have essentially been excised and bound into a discrete work. Volume two is lacking a title page, and is missing pages 1638-1671, with pages 827-858 from volume one apparently bound in instead by mistake. While the pagination is occasionally irregular, this appears to be the only loss. CONDITION In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the edges and spines. Internally, firmly bound. There is some light marking to the boards. Internally a little age toned with some light foxing here and there. The mispla … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUÉ (Ami)
Paris, Mme Ve Courcier, 1820. Henry Nugent Bell
Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. Condition: Good. Scarce. First edition. The previous owner has updated the family tree along with some marginalia on page 343. CONDITION The binding is firm. The inner hinges have been reinforced. There is seem wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. The pages are generally clean and bright with some minor spotting. There is a small closed tear on the front endpaper. Oersted, John (Hans) Christian
Printed by C. Baldwin for Baldwin, Cradock & Joy. First Edition. Hardcover. The first edition in English of Oersted's magnum opus (pp. 273-276), preceded by a small Latin pamphlet (Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electici in acum magneticum) also published in 1820. This work laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics with the work of Michael Faraday following soon after and later Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of the original Latin publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Oersted himself realized the importance of an English translation as attested to by the note at the beginning of this paper: "Translated from a printed account drawn up in Latin by the author, and transmitted by him to the Editor of the Annals of Philosophy." "...[Oersted] had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 ... He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism, and to prove their existence by experiment ... In the winter of 1819-1820, he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current carrying wire and saw the needle was disturbed. Resuming the experiments the summer of 1820, Oersted ascertained that a circular magnetic field surrounded current carrying wire, and that a magnetic needle brought into this field would set itself tangent to the circle. Oersted's discovery opened up a new epoch in the history of physics..." (Norman 1606). Octavo. Mir, Mir Mohammed Taqi
London: printed for the editor, by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1820. First edition. 8vo, 26 x 17 cm; pp.[vi], 11, [2, blanks], 11-[1], [ii, Urdu title]. Text in Urdu and romanized Urdu. Modern half calf over modern boards; untrimmed and unopened; initial and final leaves a little soiled. A single poem by Mir, the leading Urdu poet of the eighteenth century, printed in romanized and nasta'liq script, both to introduce readers to Urdu poetry and to provide a specimen text for students of Urdu: "The following musnuwee is from the pen of Meer Tuqee, a modern poet of considerable celebrity in Hindoostan. It was named, I believe, by the author Shooulue ishq, or the Flame of Love, and as far as I can learn has never before appeared in print." The only earlier publication of Mir's poetry is the Hindoostanee Press Kooliyat Meer Tuqi (Calcutta, 1811), which appears not to have contained the present poem. Smyth sought to allay any fears the poem's title might arouse: "From the name it might be supposed to be an improper book to put into the hands of young persons: but I can assure the most scrupulous on this head, that it does not contain either a thought or a word which could give offence to the most delicate mind, and being an amusing story written in good classical Hindoostanee, is well calculated for the use of students in that language." William Carmichael Smyth was a major in the Bengal Engineers and later Governor of the East India Company's Military Seminary at Addiscombe, 1822-24. His major work was an Urdu grammar, The Hindoostanee interpreter (London, 1824). BL, BnF, Muni … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ Marcet, Jane ]
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820 Second edition, revised. The first edition was published in 1819. Contemporary half calf over mottled boards. Octavo. With twenty-three plates. Hinges cracked, but holding. Binding extremities lightly worn and rubbed. Leaves somewhat foxed and browned, very minor dampstaining to upper margins of a few gatherings, trivial offsetting from plates. Plates closely shaved at fore-edge, but with no loss. 2" closed tear to terminal blank. Contemporary ink signature to upper front flyleaf. A very good copy. Jane Haldimand Marcet (1769-1858) was the wife of physician Alexander Marcet (1770-1822), and a friend of Maria Edgeworth. At their home, she and her husband entertained some of the most distinguished scientists and thinkers of their time. She wrote Conversations on Chemistry, Intended More Especially for the Female Sex, one of the first elementary science textbooks. It was written after Marcet attended the lectures of Sir Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution. This was followed by Conversations on Political Economy (1816). As a result of her scientific and political publications, Marcet is recognized as an important figure in the history of women's education. Her Conversations books are considered the "early nineteenth century's best known introductory science texts for women and young persons" (The Feminist Companion to Literature in English, p. 713). Conversations of Natural Philosophy follows the format of Conversations in Chemistry and Conversations on Political Economy, in which characters Mrs. B and her char … [Click Below for Full Description]

The rare Large-Paper "De Luxe" edition. A special copy with an original watercolour for plate 317 by Prêtre (see note end of description). A massive and amazingly illustrated contribution to ornithology by the greatest Dutch ornithologist, Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858), with some help by one of Europe's foremost private collectors of birds, the botanist, ornithologist, politician and heritage guard, Baron Guillaume Michel Jérôme Meiffren Laugier (1772-1843). This may be regarded as Temminck's magnum opus in size, in scope and in beauty. The fine illustrations are by the best natural history artists of the period, Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1768-1849) and Nicolas Huet le Jeune (1770-1830).

Cruikshank, Isaac Robert (1789-1856)
London: Ca. 1820. A meticulous rendering of an old woman, seated, smoking, among her pets, and surrounded by a circular frieze of 30 heads of highly diverse individuals (plus a full-length Cupid): young lovers, soldier, miser, judge, mortician, farmer, sailor, squire, singing lady, scold, dandy, toper, etc., as well as several attractive young women. There is also a "temple of love", and a lovers' maze. In the corners are elaborate curtains, a decorated confection, decanters of spirits and a display of fruits. Across the top is the legend, lightly sketched in pencil, CAFE BURNS CHARACTERS. 1 vols. Image 7 x 7-3/4 inches, matted and framed to 11-3/4 x 12-1/2 inches overall. A Superb Social Satire by Robert Cruikshank, Ca. 1820. Isaac Robert Cruikshank, son of Isaac and elder brother of the more famous George, was a caricaturist, illustrator and (particularly apropos of the picture offered here) portrait miniaturist. His first caricatures appeared around 1810 and were often produced in conjunction with his brother Geroge, with whom he shared a studio. Notes Bryant and Heneage, "Of his [Robert's] social satires, those he made of the dandies and the fashion for 'hobby horses' in the early 1820s are among the most attractive." We are pleased to be able to offer a fine example of this genre. Bryant & Heneage, Dictionary of British Cartoonists and Caricaturists, p. 52. Some light soiling, mostly marginal, otherwise fine, and attractive.
