George B D'Oyly
T. and J. Swords, 1820. Condition: Very Good binding. First published in by the SPCK in 1814 in three volumes, this edition -- the First American Edition -- combined them into two. The work of the two Anglican worthies was augmented in this American edition by John Henry Hobart, the Bishop of New York, sometime rector of Trinity Church in New York City and the founder of the General Theological Seminary. It is said of Bishop Hobart's additions: "He has greatly enhanced the value of this work by numerous additional notes, selected from the writings of the most eminent divines (not noticed by Drs. Mant and D'Oyly)" [cf. Allibone. A Critical Dictionary of English Literature, and British and American Authors, Vol. I; p. 518]. Two quite chunky quarto volumes in diced calf with titling in gold to the spines and all edges marbled. A previous owner gift inscription penned on the verso of the front endpaper of Volume I. One board has been reattached and others reinforced with japanese tissue. An uncommon edition. (O'Callahan, p. 142-3).

Marchebeus, Jean-Baptiste
Brief 7 pp. introductory text including history of the site, followed by 16 lithographic plates of the "Maison Quadrille" and surrounding property built for Jean-Georges Schickler, a noted Prussian banker, designed by Marchebeus and with plates engraved by Joseph Langlumé, including an overview of the grounds, floor plans, elevations, architectural details, and sketches of various rooms such as the vestibule, salon, and bathroom. Some toning and foxing throughout. Oblong 4to. Leather-backed boards with label mounted to front cover, rubbing along extremities, possible prior restoration. N.p., n.d. (1820). Inscription in ink to inside front cover from Marchebeus to his friend Eugene Dubreuil, architect to the King from 1824 to 1848, who took part in construction projects including the Palais and Parc de Saint-Cloud, Fontainebleau, and the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. The Maison Quadrille was designed and built in the Empire style according to the Neoclassical principles devised by Percier and Fontaine. The plates in this volume are a fairly early example of utilizing the relatively new lithographic process to depict architectural plans and details. Very scarce; as of January 2018, WorldCat does not locate a single holding in a North American institution.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Various Publishers, 1820. 4to. A unique and invaluable collection of what is possibly a complete collection of addresses and squibs for the election of 1820 comprising 80 separate printed pieces, mostly 4to or smaller, Plus the printed poll "The Poll at the Election of Members of Parliament for the Town and County of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Taken Before Nicholas Naters, Esquire, Sheriff, on the 10th and 11th Days of March, 1820. Candidates Sir Matthew Ridley, Cuthbert Ellison, William Scott." Newcastle: Printed by George Angus, for Emerson Charnley, 1820. This would appear to be a collection put together during the mid-nineteenth century with a specially made title page set in a variety of attractive types; there is some trivial damp staining towards the lower part of a few sheets and at some time in the last 50 year it has been rebound in buckram. The first address is dated 3rd March and the last April 8th 1820; they record a typically robust and knockabout election with subtle and not-so-subtle claims and libels flying to and fro. Ridley and Ellison were elected, Ellison's part in the election being taken by his brother as he was abroad owing to health reasons during the hustings and election itself. LAWSON (John)
London: Printed for F. Westley, 1820. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 157 x 92 mms., pp. [v] viii - xi [xii blank], [3] 4 - 227 [228 adverts], contemporary calf, gilt borders on covers, rebacked in darker calf, black morocco label; some darkening of spine at joints. John Lawson (1787 - 1825) was apprenticed to a wood engraver in London but later became a Baptist preacher and wen to Philadelphia, where he published his first book, The Maniac, which is advertised on the verso of the last leaf of text in the present volume. From Philadelphia, he made his way to Calcutta, where his skills as an engraver enabled him to produce a cheap edition of the Bible. Orient Harping was reviewed in The Monthly Review for 1820: "Here is a book full of that grotesque mixture of piety and profane jesting, which distinguished the speeches and writings of the Puritans of former days; and which is the characteristic of modern Methodists, both in and our of the Established Church. We have no means of knowing which class the present Calcutta missionary belongs: but he is certainly destitute of that solemn awe and reverence of feeling, when talking of religious subjects, which become a member of any church when so talking, and which are still more plainly suited to a professed propagator of our holy faith." Mary Ellis Gibson, in Anglophone Poetry in Colonial India, 1780-1913 (2011), when she asserts "Lawson seldom poetically indulged in a positive thought. Rather his experience of severe depression characterizing The Maniac colored all his poetry." The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle (1826), pp. … [Click Below for Full Description]
