Jomard, E. F.
Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1820. [Double] elephant folio (ca. 71 x 53 cm). Title page, one unnumbered chart (legend) and 37 engraved plates, numbered 1, 50-83, 96-97, of which plates 1, 51-52, 54, 57-58, 61, 79 double-sized, folded, and plate 68 even somewhat larger - double folded. Second edition. A suite of spectacular plates depicting antiquities in Egypt, as observed by members of the French scientific expedition to Egypt, which was part of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaign (1798-1801). Many buildings, it appears, were in a much better condition than they are today. The French cartographer, engineer, and archaeologist Edme-François Jomard (1777-1862) "...edited the Description de L'Égypte and was a member of the Institut d'Egypte established by Napoleon. He supervised the educational and cultural mission sent to France from Egypt by Muhammad Ali of Egypt....The publication of the landmark, outsized Description de l'Égypte (Description of Egypt) was decreed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. This seminal publication on Egyptology was a collaboration effort of some 150 prominent French scientist and scholars and 2,000 technicians and artists. It is the record of Bonaparte's Commission des Sciences et des Arts that accompanied the ill-fated French campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798-1801). Jomard was one of the founding members of the Société de Géographie in Paris" (Wikipedia). Plate 1 is a double-sized map of an island in the river Nile. Edges uncut, therefore a little variable in size. Lower left corner of plate 83 torn, just reaching the lower left printed surf … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first edition in English of Oersted's magnum opus (pp. 273-276), preceded by a small Latin pamphlet (Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electici in acum magneticum) also published in 1820. This work laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics with the work of Michael Faraday following soon after and later Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of the original Latin publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Oersted himself realized the importance of an English translation as attested to by the note at the beginning of this paper: "Translated from a printed account drawn up in Latin by the author, and transmitted by him to the Editor of the Annals of Philosophy." "...[Oersted] had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 ... He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism, and to prove their existence by experiment ... In the winter of 1819-1820, he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current carrying wire and saw the needle was disturbed. Resuming the experiments the summer of 1820, Oersted ascertained that a circular magnetic field surrounded current carrying wire, and that a magnetic needle brought into this field would set itself tangent to the circle. Oersted's discovery opened up a new epoch in the history of physics..." (Norman 1606). Octavo. With three folding maps of the Roman Empire and frontispiece of Gibbon to volume I (collated complete). Gibbon offers an explanation for why the Roman Empire fell, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources, though he was not the only historian to tackle the subject. Most of his ideas are directly taken from what few relevant records were available: those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries. Gibbon's prose, the vehicle for this subtle historical vision, has been found by some to be decorous and mannered to a fault. Perhaps this estimation relies on no very close reading, since Gibbon's writing arguably does exhibit change and development within an overall continuity of manner. But if it were truly so, then this would enforce the judgement that the Decline … [Click Below for Full Description]

Temminck, C. J. and [G. M. J.] Meiffren Laugier de Chartrouse
Paris, F. G. Levrault, [1820]-1838-[1839]. In five volumes. Royal folio (54.5 x 35.4 cm). Titles, half-titles, dedication to Cuvier, Table méthodique; 600 hand-coloured engraved plates [I: 1-117; II: 118-236; III: 237-361; IV: 362-483; V: 484-600], all with unnumbered accompanying text leaves. Uniform contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Spines with five gilt-stippled raised bands; compartments with gilt ornamental lines and title. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt.l The rare large-paper De Luxe edition. A special copy with an original watercolour for plate 317 by Prêtre (see note end of description). A massive and amazingly illustrated contribution to ornithology by the greatest Dutch ornithologist, Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858), with some help by one of Europe's foremost private collectors of birds, the botanist, ornithologist, politician and heritage guard, Baron Guillaume Michel Jérôme Meiffren Laugier (1772-1843). This may be regarded as Temminck's magnum opus in size, in scope and in beauty. The fine illustrations are by the best natural history artists of the period, Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1768-1849) and Nicolas Huet le Jeune (1770-1830). Especially the larger illustrations by Prêtre are among the best natural history illustrations ever made. The plates have about 800 figures of birds representing 661 species. The present copy is almost twice as large as the usual 4to.-edition, the colouring being much better. Large-paper copies of the present work seem to be much rarer than the large-paper edition of Buffon's Planches Enluminées. The work is a suppleme … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Ottoman Empire, probably s], 1820. 8°: [16] reverse collation, manuscript in black ink with gilt details, with first and last page originally mounted on endpapers, original gold paper boards, red cloth spine, blue endpapers with embossed floral details, two heart shaped paper labels with manuscript in black ink and grey and red pencil in Ottoman language on the front endpaper (first two pages fragile in margins due to the gilt decoration, with small loss of paper, but not effecting the illustrations or the script, tears in the second page repaired with old tape in margins and not affecting the manuscript on the back, the rest of the sheets in generally good clean condition with tiny holes and very light staining in the margins of some sheets, last two pages with tiny worm holes in white margins, gilt boards slightly age toned and with light wear on the corners) The beautifully made primer with the basics of the Arabic script was made in the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, probably for pupils from a noble or rich family. The first two pages, elaborately illuminated with floral patters and gilt background in the margins, list in charts the basic letters. Written over the right chart are the verses from the Quran: [I seek refuge in Allah from the cursed Satan] and [My Lord, make things easy, never make them hard, my Lord complement this matter with goodness]. The study of script of Arabic letters in traditional schools always started with the latter phrase. Louis XVI / Silvestre de Sacy, [Antoine Isaac] (ed.).
1820. 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemporary grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [...]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
