MALTHUS, Thomas Robert.
London: John Murray, 1820. Octavo (210 x 129 mm). Recent half calf to style, red morocco label, marbled sides. Occasional light foxing and a few short closed tears repaired, overall a nice, clean copy. First edition. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place" (ODNB). Goldsmiths' 22767; Kress C.577. [Attributes: First Edition]

JAMESON, Robert.
Third, last, and definitive edition of Jameson's most important book. This edition "was completely revised and based on a different system of classification which owed much to F. Mohs" (DSB). Jameson (1774-1854) went to Freiberg to study under Werner. He founded the Wernerian Natural History Society in Edinburgh and was for fifty years Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University. His books were instrumental in introducing Wernerian geognostic doctrines and his classification of the rock strata into Britain.

Rodriguez was a major figure in the early military and political history of Argentina and the Governor of Buenos Aires from 1820-1824. He established a truce with Gov. Estanislao López of Santa-Fé. At first he supported Rosas, but later turned against him; he died in exile in Montevideo where his Memoirs were published after his death, in 1849. In this proclamation he promises to ovecome the problems and criminality of the prior government and eventually succeeds according to Zinny: "En efecto, en tan difíciles circunstancias, y apesar del melancólico cuadro que presentaba la situacion, para el delicado puesto de gobernar un pueblo sumergido en la mas espantosa anarquía que la historia argentina recuerda, el general Rodriguez cumplió al pié de la letra lo que en esta proclama prometía." Tompkins, Daniel]
[Albany]: Albany Argus, 1820. Elephant folio broadside, 22" x 18". Old folds, docketed in ink on verso. Printed in three columns after the caption title. Some spotting, a couple of holes just grazing a letter in the title. Good+. At head of title: "ALBANY ARGUS Extra. Tuesday April 18, 1820."A rare broadside from New York State's hotly contested 1820 gubernatorial election. It supports Daniel Tompkins, who had been Governor from 1807-1817 and was now James Monroe's vice president. Clintonians considered Tompkins a crook although, as his supporters insist, "he has been vilely traduced and cruelly persecuted" and exonerated of this charge. The "astonishing" claim that Tompkins "is the advocate of slavery" is also rebutted.Tompkins was the candidate of the "Bucktail" faction of New York's Democratic Republicans. Bucktails resented the Clinton dynasty, were angered by Clinton's covert support for Rufus King's election to the U.S. Senate, and opposed Clinton's affection for canal-building. Tompkins was a strong candidate, but lost the election. Most of the third column consists of his supporters' names: Martin Van Buren, Erastus Root, Peter Livingston, Henry Field, and more than fifty other active New York politicos. OCLC 960053487 [1- Huntington] as of February 2017. Not located in American Imprints, Sabin, or online sites of AAS, NYHS, NYPL, Library of Congress.

For sale is an exceptionally rare and important 6-volume FIRST EDITION collection of Don Juan, by Lord Byron. Published 1820-23. Each volume being in the First Edition, and comprising the complete set of cantos I-IVI. The volumes are entirely complete throughout. This unsophisticated collection is bound in the publisher's original boards, with paper labels, denoting the canto numbers, to the spines. They remain refreshingly as they did when they were first published; entirely untouched. There are losses to the spines in places, and the odd jot of rubbing to the boards, but this matters not. Internally, they could not be cleaner; they remain in excellent order, with the page edges uncut. Overall, this marvellous collection could not come more highly recommended. Very rare, in and of themselves, but even more so in a complete collection. To find a set which has not been touched is a joy, and it comes very highly recommended.

John Crawford
Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill printed by Thomas, 1820. Condition: Near fine. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management.. . is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George, who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens. This edition was originally i … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROCHE, Regina Maria.
Printed at the Minerva Press for A.K. Newman & Co. 1820. FIRST EDITION. 4 vols. 12mo. Ad. on verso of final leaf vols I, II & III; tiny hole in sig. C10 vol. II not affecting sense. Contemp. half calf, single-ruled gilt borders, spines with raised gilt bands, maroon & black morocco labels; sl. rubbing to extremities. Each vol. inscribed on titlepage, 'J.M. Parson, the gift of her uncle G. Webb', some trimming in upper margin. Blind-stamped 'Knowepark, Portsoy, Banffshire'. An attractive, clean & fresh copy of a very difficult title. Although he includes several of Roche's titles, The Munster Cottage Boy is not in Loeber; not in Sadleir or Wolff, who owned only one of her titles. Blakey p.270. Copac lists several copies, but this title is scare in commerce. A convoluted tale of love, treachery, mistaken identity, and mysterious strangers, set for the most part in the sleepy Munster coastal town of Strandstown. The heroine, Fidelia, is unaware of her father's identity, but is unwittingly taken into his protection as she attempts to flee an aggressively insistent and dishonourable suitor. The novel is set against the backdrop of massive Irish depopulation, and provides an interesting commentary on poverty in Ireland, and the tide of emigration that swept across the country towards the beginning of the 19th century. Grant, James Colquhoun

Text on first two pages, third page blank, fourth page with address, remnant of wax seal [hole in blank portion resulting from breaking the seal], and a few postal cancels. Very Good. This letter is an illuminating window on the activities of a prosperous Jamaica plantation owner in the years before Emancipation. It discusses Grant's shipment of sugar from his Three Mile River Estate in Jamaica, bound for Perth, and Estate's slaves, business, and cattle. "30 hogsheads of Three Mile River Sugar on the Isabelle Simpson for Perth which vessel sailed from Yarmouth on the 17th ult. I hope she will have arrived safe and delivered her cargo in good order long before you receive this. . . The expenditure of manure does not as you seem to think improve the quality of sugars, but otherwise, although it tends greatly to increase the quantity. . . The slaves on the estate are healthy & the cattle recovering from the fatigues of the crop. I shall be obliged to dispose of from 12 to 14 of the oldest & that are unfit for the yoke longer to the grazier, as we have not the means of fattening them on the estate." James Colquhoun Grant [1725-1822] was a planter and attorney, originally from Scotland, who owned and lived at the Brighton estate in Westmoreland, Jamaica. He served as Solicitor to several estates in Western Jamaica, including the Three Mile River estate. "The opera is Rossini's first buffo masterpiece in the fully fledged two-act form. It quickly won widespread popular acclaim in Italy and it was the first Rossini opera to be produced in Germany (1816, Munich) and France (1817, Paris)... L'italiana in Algeri is a work of great richness and sophistication. Formally it is an innovative piece, drawing Rossini's experience from his single-act farse into a larger context. It is also, despite being written at speed, notably free from any kind of self-borrowing.
