Anon.
[Ottoman Empire, probably s], 1820. 8°: [16] reverse collation, manuscript in black ink with gilt details, with first and last page originally mounted on endpapers, original gold paper boards, red cloth spine, blue endpapers with embossed floral details, two heart shaped paper labels with manuscript in black ink and grey and red pencil in Ottoman language on the front endpaper (first two pages fragile in margins due to the gilt decoration, with small loss of paper, but not effecting the illustrations or the script, tears in the second page repaired with old tape in margins and not affecting the manuscript on the back, the rest of the sheets in generally good clean condition with tiny holes and very light staining in the margins of some sheets, last two pages with tiny worm holes in white margins, gilt boards slightly age toned and with light wear on the corners) The beautifully made primer with the basics of the Arabic script was made in the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, probably for pupils from a noble or rich family. The first two pages, elaborately illuminated with floral patters and gilt background in the margins, list in charts the basic letters. Written over the right chart are the verses from the Quran: [I seek refuge in Allah from the cursed Satan] and [My Lord, make things easy, never make them hard, my Lord complement this matter with goodness]. The study of script of Arabic letters in traditional schools always started with the latter phrase. The teacher writes the phrase and the student re-writes it until he or she reaches an acceptable level to move … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis XVI / Silvestre de Sacy, [Antoine Isaac] (ed.).
1820. 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemporary grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [...]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Title from front cover of publisher's paper board case. Twelve individual, hand colored cards show twelve brides and grooms in different wedding costumes of local traditions: Africans -- Austrians -- Hungarians -- Ilyrians -- Italians -- Poles -- Russians -- Scotch -- Spaniards -- Styrians -- Swiss - Turks ... in addition to another Styrians plate on the back of the case. Cards measure 120 x 90 mm. The original slipcase / box shows some wear (please see photos) but is thoroughly intact. 1820. Believed Belmont County Ohio in origin. Skilled work and endearing eyes! Stunning pair of variations (contrast of opaque black horse and hatched Appaloosa) exist on one sheet measuring 7.75 x 12.25". Uniform and saber details read like a European memory but may refer to Hessian Mercenaries during the Revolutionary War who wore an iteration of this. Accompanying is a beautifully styled horse and groomsman ink drawing (likely by the same hand) and an extraordinary letter of heartbreak written over an accounts page. Text follows (sic) below: Dear maddam after my best respect you and my sincere wish for your happyness I shall give you a small speech of my welfare. SWAINSON, W.
London, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820-1833. 6 volumes. 8vo (250 x 160mm). With 318 beautifully handcoloured lithographed plates. Contemporary brown half morocco, gilt ornamented spines in 6 compartments, topedges gilt. A very fine clean and beautifully bound set of one of the earliest natural history works to be produced by means of lithography in England. 122 plates show shells, the others birds and insects, mainly butterflies. The excellent plates are all drawn by the author. At the suggestion of his friend W.E. Leach of the British Museum, he learnt lithography. Swainson is considered one of the best zoological artists of his time. "The authors of those books were clearly as much seduced by colour as were the book buyers. And in the context of the period, this is scarcely surprising. The world of nature can never before have seemed so colourful: from all parts of the globe came a seemingly endless succession of animals ." (Dance, The Art of Natural History p. 112). "At the first opportunity he took passage to South America. He returned in 1816 with 20.000 insects and hundreds of birds and plants, enough to keep his studies going for some time. Both the upper and underside of the wings of this butterfly (Cressida heliconides, vol. 3 series 2 plate 94) are illustrated as an aid to identifying the butterfly in the field, both at rest and in flight. For a long time the only museum in Europe having a specimen of this butterfly was that of Sir Joseph Banks. The butterfly was captured in 'Van Diemen's Land' (Tasmania) during Bank's travels with Captain Cook. Swainson's specim … [Click Below for Full Description]

Keats, John
London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey, 1820. Hard Cover. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, with half-title and publisher's advertisements present. Original publisher's brown cloth and brown paper boards, with white paper label to the spine, lettered in black. Some wear to the extremities, mostly to spine with some splitting to the upper spine and a few small stains to the covers; bookplate to front pastedown, some scattered spots, otherwise a clean copy free of any repairs or restoration. An attractive example of a completely unsophosticated copy in the extremely scarce publisher boards. Keats' most popular collection of poetry, Lamia, Isabella, the Eve of St. Agnes is seldom found in the original publisher's boards. A scarce title to begin with, copies are often found in contemporary or modern fine bindings and are typically lacking the half-title leaf and eight pages of publisher's terminal advertisements. This copy has both the ads and the half-title and is entirely free of repairs or restorations. Lamia, Isabella, the Eve of St Agnes is Keats' third and final volume of poetry. In addition to the title narrative poems, it included Keats' renowned odes, including "Ode to A Nightingale," "Ode on a Grecian Urn," "Ode on Melancholy," "Ode to Psyche," and "To Autumn," among others. Widely considered his best and most acclaimed work, these odes are, as the Encyclpaedia Britannica proclaims, "Keats' most distinctive poetic achievement." Additionally, this volume includes the unfinished "Hyperion, a Fragment," which Keats, still discouraged by the negative critical review … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Didot, 1820-1825-1878. [Click Below for Full Description]

The trial of the presumptive Queen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. The pagination carries from the D … [Click Below for Full Description]

'To which is prefixed a genealogical and biographical history of the illustrious House of Hastings, including a memoir of the present earl and his family'. Henry Nugent Bell (1792-1822) was an Irish genealogist. Bell followed the profession of a legal antiquary, and, in order to obtain a recognised status, entered himself at the Inner Temple, 17 Nov. 1818. In the same year he acquired considerable distinction by his successful advocacy of the claim of Mr. Hastings to the long-dormant earldom of Huntingdon; the estates, however, were legally invested in the Earl of Moira's family. Bell published a detailed account of the proceedings in The Huntingdon Peerage, and the narrative of his various adventures, which are given at length, displays a suspicious luxuriance of imagination not … [Click Below for Full Description]
