M ller/Verner C./ F.
Artist: M ller/Verner C/ F ; issued in: ; date: ca, 1820. - technic: Lithography; colorit: colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 30,5 x 41; - description : View of Sankt Nikolai kyrka (Church of St. Nicholas) in Stockholm. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the most populous city in the Nordic countries. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake M?laren flows into the Baltic Sea. Just outside the city and along the coast is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the capital of Stockholm County. Stockholm's location appears in Norse sagas as Agnafit, and in Heimskringla in connection with the legendary king Agne. The earliest written mention of the name Stockholm dates from 1252, by which time the mines in Bergslagen made it an important site in the iron trade. The first part of the name (stock) means log in Swedish, although it may also be connected to an old German word (Stock) meaning fortification. The second part of the name (holm) means islet, and is thought to refer to the islet Helgeandsholmen in central Stockholm. According to Eric Chronicles the city is said to have been founded by Birger Jarl to protect Sweden from sea invasions made by Karelians after the pillage of Sigtuna on Lake M?laren in 1187. The strategic and economic importance of the city made Stockholm an important factor in relations between the Danish Kings of the Kalmar Union and the national independence mov … [Click Below for Full Description]

After the Ice Age, at around 8,000 BC, there had already been vast migrations towards the present-day Stockholm area, but as temperatures dropped, inhabitants moved away towards the South. Thousands of years later, as the ground thawed, the climate became tolerable, and the lands became fertile, some life moved back to the North. At the intersection of the Baltic Sea and lake Mälaren is an archipelago site where the Old Town of Stockholm was first occupied in about 1000 AD by Vikings. Vikings had a positive trade impact on the land because of the trade routes they created.

SOCIÉTÉ DES SCIENCES, BELLES-LETTRES ET ARTS, DE BORDEAUX.
FIRST EDITION of the first French book on wreck salvage and raising objects from under water. The Société des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Bordeaux proposed the question, "What is the most assured method of raising submerged objects from a given depth, whatever their weight, from a location affected by the ebb and flow of the tide?" As no single essay gave the complete answer, the present work was published incorporating the best of those answers submitted. It consists principally of an extract of the best essay, submitted by Georget ("Ingénieur en Chef des Ponts et Chaussées"), an extract of the answer submitted by a former naval officer at Brest, Rolland, and a memoir by a member of the society, F. Thibaut, on raising a vessel in the port of Bordeaux loaded with 200 tons of rocks. There then follows an essay on the use of pontoons, and at the end is an account of the raising of the Spanish galleon Tojo, sunk in Vigo Bay in 1702 and raised in 1741 by Goubert (here called Gaubert). This account had been published in the Mémoires de Mathématique et de Physique, présentés à l'Académie Royale des Sciences for 1755. The first three memoirs are illustrated by 15 detailed engraved plates, which show the method of placing warps round the sunken vessel and supporting it from the surface, some of the tools required, etc.

LOUETTE (P.-A.)

Legatura posteriore in piena pelle, piatti entro duplice filettatura dorata, dorso a cinque nervi con fregi e titolo in oro, risguardi in carta marmorizzata, astuccio protettivo in cartone. Ottima copia, a fogli diseguali, impressa su carta pesante. [Click Below for Full Description]

MALTHUS, Thomas Robert.
London: John Murray, 1820. Octavo (210 x 129 mm). Recent half calf to style, red morocco label, marbled sides. Occasional light foxing and a few short closed tears repaired, overall a nice, clean copy. First edition. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place" (ODNB). JAMESON, Robert.
Third, last, and definitive edition of Jameson's most important book. This edition "was completely revised and based on a different system of classification which owed much to F. Mohs" (DSB). Jameson (1774-1854) went to Freiberg to study under Werner. He founded the Wernerian Natural History Society in Edinburgh and was for fifty years Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University. His books were instrumental in introducing Wernerian geognostic doctrines and his classification of the rock strata into Britain.
