Francesco Petrarca
Livorno, Italy: Dai Torchi Di Glauco Masi. Condition: Very Good +. Lovely 1820 edition of one of the first great modern collections of love poetry, written by the Renaissance poet viewed as the "first true reviver of learning in Medieval Europe" (Encyclopedia Britannica). The story of Petrarch's love for Laura is well-known but the spirituality and complexity of this love and the cataclysmic loss he felt at her death can be understood only by reading this cycle of his poems. Bound in a modern 1/4 red morocco over marbled boards (with matching marbled endpapers). 5 raised bands, gilt-rule and gilt-devices within the compartments. A solidly VG+ copy, with very light staining confined to the upper inner margins of the first third of Vol. I. This edition is very handsomely printed as well. Masi, the printer, boats on the title page that it is printed with types supplied by Fermin Didot, the great Parisian printer. Each volume has a lithographed frontispiece portrait accomplished on the stone by F. Wagner. The portrait of Petrarch introduces Vol. I and the portrait of Laura Vol. II. Thick octavo, Vol. I consists of 362 pgs., Vol. II 242 pgs.

Philadelphia: Samuel F. Bradford, 1820. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. The maps have been collated against the index: there are 60 folding, or double-page maps (lacking only 1--the map of The United States), 1 single cartographic "plate" and 10 engraved portraits of American statesmen; the "plate" and the portraits are not called for in the index; backed in leather with corners and marbled paper over boards, the book has been tastefully rebacked with most of the original backstrip mounted; the maps are generally toned and foxed, a few more so than others, but are attractive nonetheless; the engraved portraits are similarly toned, a few more so than others; the general index to the Cyclopaedia is included in this volume; digital images can be made available upon request. Taylor, Joseph; William Carmichael Smyth, editor
London printed for the Editor, by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1820. Small 4to, 25 x 16 cm; pp.[iv], viii, 865, [1, blank], [2]. Modern morocco-backed cloth boards; final leaves with a tiny amount of marginal worming, text unaffected. First English edition of Taylor's dictionary, abridged for the benefit of British students of Urdu, particularly cadets at the East India Company's colleges at Haileybury and Addiscombe. Smyth halved the length as well as the price of Taylor's original dictionary and employed only naskh characters, recognizing the demand in the market for an Urdu dictionary, as Shakespear's 1817 dictionary was by then all but unobtainable, and the Company's Court of Directors, noting that Shakepear's first edition was but Taylor's dictionary of 1808 lightly revised, had yet to authorize funds for a second edition. Smyth's dismissive approach to Shakespear's admitted reproduction of Taylor's dictionary earned Smyth several scathing contemporary reviews, particularly as his own edition of Taylor made little contribution to the original text beyond reducing its length. The preface notes that while students of Urdu in India did not want for the necessary books, those in England had much more limited access to such material. William Carmichael Smyth attended Haileybury College as a cadet of the East India Company around 1802, and later served in Bengal. By the 1830s he had retired to England, and appears in public records in connection with disputes around his pension. He died in 1861. We trace no copies at auction. [Attributes: First Edition]

Samuel Prout
1820. Samuel Prout (17 September 1783 10 February 1852) was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. John Ruskin, whose work often emulated Prout's, wrote in 1844, "Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout". Prout is often compared to his contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable and Ruskin, whom he taught. View in Ghent is an original unframed watercolour. The scene has market traders to the left of the Hotel de Ville. 38cm x 29cm on buff wove paper unframed. There are paint testing marks verso together with the artist's graphite signature. Prout's lithographic reproduction of this watercolour of @ 1820 appears in "Sketches by Samuel Prout, in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland"edited by Charles Holme and text by Ernest G Halton. The belfry and the Hotel de Ville feature in the graphite drawing from the Lansdowne Collection 'Hotel de Ville Ghent'.

Printed By And For William Hone, Ludgate-Hill. 1820.The Pamphlet And The Toy Together One Shilling.Pp24 including cover wraps and last two pages advertisements. Approx 22cm x 13.5cm. Fore edges unevenly trimmed, some staining and dustiness, the odd corner folded and lacking, recently resewn. With the very uncommon ladder "toy", folding printed pasteboard approx 15.1 cm x 6.3 cm, which matches the progress of Caroline of Brunswick's unhappy marriage to King George IV. The "steps" of the marriage ladder according to Hone were ; Qualification, Declaration, Acceptation, Alteration, Imputation, Exculpation, Emigration, Remigration,Consternation, Accusation, Publication, Indignation,Coronation, and finally Degradation. The pamphlet is a little worn as usual, the ladder in Very Good plus condition. A previous owner has added ink names under the illustrations on pp 4 & 5. This is a wonderfully scurrilous pamphlet, describing a scandalous episode in British constitutional history which created a huge furore at the time, with great public support for Caroline's cause. This is not an uncommon pamphlet, but the accompanying ladder is very hard to find in any condition.

John Crawford
London: Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill printed by Thomas, 1820. Condition: Near fine. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management.. . is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George, who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens. This edition was orig … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Richard Philips, 1820. First edition, slim 8vo, pp. [4], 106; frontispiece map, 6 aquatint plates by Neele & Son after sketches by R. Stennett; near fine, sound copy in 20th century half brown morocco by Morrell, gilt-paneled spine, t.e.g. Issued as no. six of volume II of Phillips's series of Modern Voyages and Travels. "The author was a surgeon assigned to the naval hospital in Barbados in 1807 and later to a war vessel cruising through the islands. He spent about four years in Caribbean service and became thoroughly familiar with colonial society. His book presents an interesting picture of the rushing business conducted by the slave traders in Barbados on the eve of abolition and gives accounts of encounters with the Spanish and French during the course of the Napoleonic wars. The author saw little that was attractive in West Indian life and was greatly shocked by the general prevalence of immorality" (Ragatz, Guide For The Study Of British Caribbean History 1763-1834, p. 235). Leather Binding,Scarce Overall Condition: Good This book weighs 1.5 KG when packed UK Postage: £ 3.99 US Postage: £ 23.99 EU Postage: £ 18.99 European Postage: £ 19.99 Asia Postage: £ 31.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 32.99 DESCRIPTION In his attempt to deprive his estranged wife of her title, the newly crowned George IV unwittingly turned her into a focus for anti-government and anti-monachical sentiment. The trial of the presumptive Queen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response, Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy. The first volume contains the prosecution, the second the defence. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this first issue being scarce.
