Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Dimensioni 145x190 circa." In the XIX century, Michela De Vito became quite a famous artist. She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. Francis]. MONTAGU, Basil [BACON
1820. [Book History] ~ UNRECORDED PROPOSALS [BACON, Francis]. MONTAGU, Basil Proposals for an edition of the works of lord bacon [s.i]. [s.n., s.d., c1820?], . 8vo. [4], 3-13, [1], 16pp. With initial blank. Exquisitely bound in contemporary, elaborately gilt-tooled, straight-grain purple morocco, with silk endpapers and inner dentelles. Paper title label to upper board. Generous margins. Trifling shelf-wear to extremities, else fine. From the library of Lord Eldon, with his signature and circular armorial book-label to verso of FFEP. An apparently unrecorded prospectus issued by English author and legal reformer Basil Montagu (1770-1851) for what was to become the definitive nineteenth-century edition of the works of the Tudor/Stuart philosopher and politician Francis Bacon. Perhaps best remembered today for his friendships with some of the leading romantics, including Coleridge, Lamb, Southey and Wordsworth, Montagu's edition was eventually published between 1825 and 1837 and extended to 16 volumes and is described by Mark Lester in ODNB as his 'own attempt at literary achievement'. This prospectus is in itself a carefully constructed 'address' to prospective subscriber's, with extensive appended notes, commenting upon the inadequacies of earlier editions (such as that of 1753, where 'the Editor...without any authority, ventured to alter the whole of Lord Bacon's own arrangement of the third and fourth parts of the Instauration') and outlining Montagu's unimpeachably scholarly aims. The first volume of 1825 reprints an altered part, and by no means all, of this prospectus … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSSINI, Gioachino 1792-1868
French artist Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820-1910), known simply as Nadar, was a major figure in early photography, capturing images of many of the major Parisian personalities of the 19th century. His fascination with ballooning led him to be the first person to take aerial photographs on a flight in 1858. Nadar's famous studio was taken over by his son, Paul Nadar (1856-1939). Nadar took this image of Rossini in March 1856, a year after the composer had moved back to Paris. It is one of the earliest and best-known photographs of the operatic master. Due to damage to the original plate, Nadar made only a single proof at the time, now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Nevertheless, the image would serve as the basis for numerous lithographs and engravings over the following decades. Nadar's son Paul made silver gelatin prints from the original plate in the early part of the 20th century, and it is from these prints that the image is known today. "No composer in the first half of the 19th century enjoyed the measure of prestige, wealth, popular acclaim or artistic influence that belonged to Rossini. His contemporaries recognized him as the greatest Italian composer of his time. His achievements cast into oblivion the operatic world of Cimarosa and Paisiello, creating new standards against which other composers were to be judged. That both Bellini and Donizetti carved out personal styles is undeniable; but they worked under Rossini's shadow, and their artistic personalities emerged in confrontation with his operas. Not until the advent of Verdi was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Captain Adam Seaborn (pseud. John Cleves Symmes?)
J. Seymour, New York. Symzonia: A Voyage of Discovery. New York: J. Seymour, 1820. Octavo, Pages [i-vi] vii-xii [13] 14-248 with original first and last free endpapers. Brown leather with gilt titled spine. Probably the first US utopian science fiction novel and one of the first hollow Earth stories. "The narrator, Mr. Seaborn, with a special high-tech paddle boat, built with no metal to avoid magnetic effects sets out on a voyage into uncharted southern waters. Conflict is provided by a mutinous Mr. Slim, who proves to be Seaborn's nemesis. Eventually the ship penetrates into the Antarctic hole, and voyages deep into the inner surface of the earth, which Seaborn claims for the US and calls 'Symzonia'. They encounter a utopian society, run by a benevolent aristocracy, which has long since banished all of their misfits to a distant colony, and possibly the outside Earth. The Symzonians have advanced airships, boats with jet propulsion, flame-proof cloth woven from spiderwebs, and a mysterious weapon of mass destruction. Eventually, they expel Seaborn and his crew back to the exterior world. Due to a series of accidents, all material evidence of Symzonia is lost on the return voyage, and Seaborn is swindled out of his profits." Fine copy with very modest wear to leather, lightly toned endpapers, dust darkened top edge, and off white to tan colored pages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Raymond, Daniel
Baltimore: Published by Fielding Lucas, Jun'r, 1820. First edition. Octavo, bound in full brown Russian diced calf. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, raised bands. In very good condition with some some browning and light staining to the some of the text. First editions are extremely rare. Daniel Raymond was the first important political economist to appear in the United States. He theorized that "labor creates wealth" which may have been an improvement based on the thinking of Adam Smith of Europe. Daniel Raymond thought that the economy of England was actually the economy of the higher-ranking members of that society, and not the economy of the entire nation. He held that wealth is not an aggregation of exchange values, as Adam Smith had conceived it. Daniel Raymond held that wealth is the capacity or opportunity to acquire the necessaries and conveniences of life by labor. "Thoughts on Political Economy is the first systematic work on this subject by an American"--Howes R82 ("aa"). Sabin 68042. [Attributes: First Edition]

GRÉTRY, André 1741-1813
Zwikau: Schumann, [ca. 1820]. 185 x 120 mm. plus good margins. Printed on wove paper within an octagonal border. Grétry is depicted in later life; the present portrait was quite possibly done from life. "[Grétry] made decisive contributions to the scope and style of the 18th-century opéra comique, and to technical aspects such as musical 'local colour' and the design of overtures. His opéras comiques and recitative comedies for the Paris Opéra enjoyed unparalleled success in the 20 years up to the French Revolution... It is hard to imagine the evolution of opéra comique, and Romantic opera in general, without the part played by his works." M. Elizabeth C. Bartlet and David Charlton in Grove Music Online. Aristophanes
London: John Murray, 1820. FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [iii]-clx, 294; vii, [i], 318. Half-title of vol. 1 discarded. Slightly later 'Spanish-calf'-style morocco, boards patterned in green and black and bordered with a triple gilt rule, spines divided by raised bands, double red morocco labels, other compartments elaborately gilt, edges gilt. Somewhat spotted and foxed in places. Spines lightly faded, extremities a touch rubbed, small scrape to front board of vol. 1 and its lower corner lightly discoloured. Modern bookplate to front pastedown. A finely-bound copy of the first edition of these translations - three of them the plays' first appearances in English - from Aristophanes by Thomas Mitchell (1783-1845), a talented classical scholar whose progress was impeded by his refusal to join the church. Despite the inclusive title Mitchell only translated four of the eleven surviving plays - The Acharnians, Knights, Clouds, and Wasps - though of these only the Clouds had previously appeared in English (along with Plutus, and the Frogs; the first complete translation of Aristophanes into English did not appear until 1837). 'Mitchell was the first English translator to do justice to Aristophanes' metrical variety, and his editions, articles, and translations did much to spread interest in the author among later generations of scholars' (ODNB); the translations were also praised by Byron.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Gezicht op Antwerpen - ca. 1820
Nog even. Prijs: Euro2.250,- (incl. lijst)

Canton (now Guangzhou). ca. 1820. Highlights. A very rare oil painting of Whampoa Anchorage. Regency period frame. Glazed. Dimensions of the frame: 20.8 x 24.5 cm / dimensions of the painting: 9 x 12.7 cm. During the 18th and 19th century, foreigners were able to acquire masses of interesting items in the shopping streets of Canton, be it paintings, carvings, silks or furniture. Whampoa, also known as Huangpu, was an anchorage 20 kilometres downriver from Canton. Foreign ships were required to anchor at Whampoa and acquire all the needed permits to trade before going to Canton. The ships of the East India Companies would offload the goods brought from abroad on to smaller vessels at Whampoa and sail to Canton. Here they would reload these vessels with items to take back with them. This would take the larger company ships 4 to 5 months while smaller ships would only need about 6 weeks. (reference Paul van Dyke and Maria Kar-wing Mok: Images of the Canton Factories.1760-1822). On the island is a row of bankshalls, temporary matsheds used by the Western ships for storage and provisions; behind them is the Pazhou pagoda, which remains to this day. (See Martin Gregory Gallery catalogue 97, item 75) The overall condition of the painting is very good with no restorations. Similar paintings of this size and period can be found in notable museum collections, such as The Hong Kong Bank Art Collection and the National Maritime Museum of Amsterdam. In China, the earliest evidence of archery dates to the Shang Dynasty ? 1766-1027BC. Through the centuries archery was important for hunting and a beloved sport among Chinese emperors. Scarpa, Antonio, Anatom (1752-1832).
- Ungedruckt. - Sehr selten.

[WATERCOLOUR - ORNITHOLOGY]. PRÊTRE, Jean Gabriel.
Original watercolour of a male and female White-flanked Sunbird (Aethopyga eximia) and a male Splendid Sunbird (Cinnyris coccinigastrus) by the prolific zoological artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre, produced for Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... (Paris, 1820-1839). On the final published plate 376, the Splendid Sunbird was changed with a Purple-throated Sunbird and the Splendid Sunbird appeared on plate 388. Sunbirds make up a family of very small passerine birds. The White-flanked Sunbird is found in Indonesia and the Splendid Sunbird in West and central Africa. Temminck's lavishly illustrated Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... issued in 102 parts between 1820-1839, was published as a kind of continuation to Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux (1770-1786). In total it contains ca. 600 engraved plates with about 800 figures of birds by Nicolas Huet and Prêtre, and it's considered "the most monumental work of the post-Napoleonic period" (Balis).Paper slightly browned, a few minor spots and some working notes in pencil. A beautiful watercolour of three sunbirds. For the published work see: Anker 502; Balis, Van diverse pluimage 75; Nissen, IVB 932; Zimmer, pp. 626-628..

[DRAWINGS - CHINESE]. [SUNQUA?].
Fourteen beautifully executed Chinese drawings showing 25 fish (including 1 eel) and 47 seashells, in coloured gouaches with gold and silver speckles to render the metallic lustre of the scales, drawn on pith paper (sometimes confusingly called "rice paper"). They show a consistent style and were clearly produced as a series. The first 8 leaves contain fish, with 2 to 6 specimens in each drawing; the last 6 contain sea shells, with 6 to 10 specimens in each drawing. In at least most cases, each specimen represents a different species. The fish include a catfish and an eel. The seashells include whelks and conchs, cowrie, clams, snails (many with spectacular spiral cones) and bi-valves with a wide variety of exotic-looking protrusions. The drawings are simple renditions of the specimens, without background scenes or plants, but depicted with considerable detail, so that it would not be difficult to identify the species. This simplicity might suggest the fairly early work of Sunqua rather than Tingqua, but the dearth of well-documented examples makes the ascription tentative.Chinese artists seem to have begun making coloured gouache drawings on pith paper in the 1820s, but the genre flourished after China's defeat in the First Opium War opened the country to foreign trade. Most were produced in the port city Guangzhen (Canton province), where the leading artists Sunqua and Tingqua established their studios. They mixed Chinese and Western styles, the present seashells having Western-style shadows with the light coming from above (and mostly slightly to the left). They catered … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRAWFURD, John.
First edition of an authoritative work, in encyclopaedia form, on the Indonesian Archipelago. It is a sequel to Crawfurd's much-acclaimed History of the Indian Archipelago (1820). Initially the author planned to publish a second edition of his History, but "on mature consideration" he came to the conclusion that the subject "would be most conveniently and compendiously treated by an alphabetic arrangement" (preface). It is primarily concerned with Java, but also covers the Malay peninsula, Thailand (Siam), the Philippines, Cambodia and Cochin-China (Vietnam). The map has had extensive routes added in red ink (with arrows to indicate the direction of travel), identified as "AW (routes 1867-68)", and the pencilled itinerary for a 1868 "Molucca Voyage" no doubt belongs to one of these routes. With a small tear in the map (whose gutter margin is reinforced with grey paper), affecting only the border and open ocean. Still in good condition, and untrimmed. Binding slightly worn but also good. An essential source for any study of the East Indies in the 19th century.Cordier, Indosinica, col. 1109; for the author: Turnbull, "Crawfurd, John (1783-1868)", in: ODNB (online ed.).
