Taylor, Joseph; William Carmichael Smyth, editor
London: printed for the Editor, by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1820. Small 4to, 25 x 16 cm; pp.[iv], viii, 865, [1, blank], [2]. Modern morocco-backed cloth boards; final leaves with a tiny amount of marginal worming, text unaffected. First English edition of Taylor's dictionary, abridged for the benefit of British students of Urdu, particularly cadets at the East India Company's colleges at Haileybury and Addiscombe. Smyth halved the length as well as the price of Taylor's original dictionary and employed only naskh characters, recognizing the demand in the market for an Urdu dictionary, as Shakespear's 1817 dictionary was by then all but unobtainable, and the Company's Court of Directors, noting that Shakepear's first edition was but Taylor's dictionary of 1808 lightly revised, had yet to authorize funds for a second edition. Smyth's dismissive approach to Shakespear's admitted reproduction of Taylor's dictionary earned Smyth several scathing contemporary reviews, particularly as his own edition of Taylor made little contribution to the original text beyond reducing its length. The preface notes that while students of Urdu in India did not want for the necessary books, those in England had much more limited access to such material. William Carmichael Smyth attended Haileybury College as a cadet of the East India Company around 1802, and later served in Bengal. By the 1830s he had retired to England, and appears in public records in connection with disputes around his pension. He died in 1861. We trace no copies at auction.

ROSSINI, Gioacchino 1792-1868
Leipzig: Breitkopf und Härtel [PN 3158], [1820]. Oblong folio. Modern half dark brown calf with marbled boards, rules and titling to spine gilt. 1f. (title), [1] (cast list and table of contents), 2-232 pp. Lithographed. Text in Italian and German. With "Presso Gio. Ricordi Negoziante di Musica d'ogni genere... " overpaste to title. Some browning, foxing, soiling, small tears, and minor dampstaining to margins of first and last leaves; trimmed at upper margin. Second edition of the first version. Rognoni, p. 446, no. 21. Gossett p. 357. La gazza ladra, to a libretto by Giovanni Gherardini after La pie voleuse by J.M.T. Badouin d'Aubigny and Louis-Charles Caigniez, was first performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on May 31, 1817. "Musically, La gazza ladra is the finest of Rossini's several essays in the semiseria that stretch from L'equivoco stravagante (1811) to Matilde di Shabran (1821). In this instance, the work can be seen to derive in part from the French drama larmoyant, in part from the so-called 'rescue' opera. The opera deals with a wide range of social groupings, and conforms to the tradition of the happy ending, the heroine saved from execution at the eleventh hour, even though in the original French play the heroine dies on the gallows." Richard Osborne in Grove Music Online. Item #26306.

Rodriguez was a major figure in the early military and political history of Argentina and the Governor of Buenos Aires from 1820-1824. He established a truce with Gov. Estanislao López of Santa-Fé. At first he supported Rosas, but later turned against him; he died in exile in Montevideo where his Memoirs were published after his death, in 1849. In this proclamation he promises to ovecome the problems and criminality of the prior government and eventually succeeds according to Zinny: "En efecto, en tan difíciles circunstancias, y apesar del melancólico cuadro que presentaba la situacion, para el delicado puesto de gobernar un pueblo sumergido en la mas espantosa anarquía que la historia argentina recuerda, el general Rodriguez cumplió al pié de la letra lo que en esta proclama prometía." Madras printed at the College Press, 1820. Second edition. Folio, 31 x 24 cm; pp.[x], xxi, [1, blank], 31, [1], 202, 18; folding table. Printed in English and Telugu. Modern calf-backed marbled boards; initial leaves spotted, final leaves with a marginal stain; otherwise, a crisp copy with wide margins. Cancelled Japanese library stamps to title-page. [Probably Munich, circa ], 1820. Water-colour drawing on a thick paper (14 x 10 cm / 5.5 x 3.9 inches), originally mounted on tan paper (15 x 19,5 cm / 5.9 x 7.6 inches). A unique Bidermeier hand painted miniature portrait of young Karl Freiherr von Schrenck, a later famous lawyer and Bavarian minister of Justice, fired for signing a memorandum against Lola Montez. - An original water-coloured drawing on oval thicker paper, mounted on a contemporary tan paper, represents young Karl, Freiherr von Schrenck (1806-1884), from a noble German family Schrenck von Notzing, a later Bavarian Minister of Justice. Karl von Schrenck was born in Munich as a son of a lawyer and Minister of Justice Sebastian Freiherr von Schrenck von Notzing. In 1846 he took over his father’s work as a minister, but was fired one later along with other ministers by Ludwig I of Bavaria for signing a memorandum against his lover Lola Montez. The following year, in 1848, Montez had to flee Bavaria during the revolution. After the revolution Karl von Schrenck continued his work in the politics as a member of the parliament and as a minister in various offices. The portrait was made around 1820, showcasing Karl von Schrenck in his mid or late teens. The portrait was probably originally inserted in an early 19th century album or memory book.

Shaw, Joshua: Hill, John
Philadelphia: Matthew Carey, 1820. Colored engraving, 12 x 15 1/4 inch plate mark on an approximately 14 1/2 x 18 inch sheet. Framed. Scattered foxing in margin, light dampstain along upper portion of left margin, light tanning. About very good. An important and scarce early American color print, based on a painting by Joshua Shaw, a British landscape artist who came to the United States in 1817. He conceived the idea of a published series of American views, which he executed over the next few years, and which were published in Philadelphia as a series of nineteen plates entitled PICTURESQUE VIEWS OF AMERICAN SCENERY. It is one of the rarest American color plate books, originally envisioned by Shaw to be published in six parts of six plates each, but discontinued after only three parts, published over three years by two different printers. The present plate is from the second part of the series, published by Mathew Carey in 1820. It depicts an idyllic scene at Spirit Creek, south of Augusta, Georgia, with a copse of softly colored deciduous trees to right in the foreground, the creek to the center- left, and a log cabin in the background on the opposite shore, under a grey sky. Complete sets of PICTURESQUE VIEWS... have appeared on the market only twice in the past fifty years and have brought in the neighborhood of $200,000 each time. Individual plates are somewhat less rare, but still very scarce on the market. An attractive view of rural Georgia in the late Federal period, and a nice example of these rare early American color plates. DEAK, PICTURING AMERICA 315. HO … [Click Below for Full Description]

[COLOURS FOR VOYAGE ARTISTS] SMITH, WARNER & Co.
211 Piccadilly, London: Smith, Warner & Co., 1800-1820. 205 x 245 mm, engraved vignette at head. Rare early advertisement for this Piccadilly firm of art suppliers, who have come up with a new method for fixing soft crayon and chalk drawings, and their range of fine water and oil colours. Specifically directed at travel artists - "well calculated to take Permanent Views at Sea, for Travelling... as they will endure every Climate without spoiling" - the piece is illustrated with a version of the familiar "exotic peoples" trope: a classical figure, Fame, flying above a group of ships at sea, presents a set of colours to Britannia and the various Continents. As if an explanation were needed, the image is captioned "Fame presenting to the Four Corners a Box of S.W. & Co. Colours". The title of the advertisement has a nice double use of the word "Discoveries", and the advertisement expounds the virtues of the "New Invented Colours, & a liquid for using them, in the manner of Oil, but with or without Oil, yet so as to become more durably brilliant & unfading". The advertisement dates from between 1800 and 1820, the period at which Smith & Warner were at 211 Piccadilly; their artists' supplies were among the best of the period and their name appears throughout the literature; for example, William Varley's "A few Observations on Art, with Notices relative to the various Exhibitions, Repositories of Art, &c &c" of 1816 lists them as one of three businesses "Where are the colours generally preferred by Artists, at which places drawing materials, of the very best quality, may be had o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prijs: Euro2.950,- (incl. lijst, incl. 21% BTW).

The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Just outside the city and along the coast is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the capital of Stockholm County. Stockholm's location appears in Norse sagas as Agnafit, and in Heimskringla in connection with the legendary king Agne. The earliest written mention of the name Stockholm dates from 1252, by which time the mines in Bergslagen made it an important site in the iron trade. The first part of the name (stock) means log in Swedish, although it may also be connected to an old German word (Stock) meaning fortification. The second part of the name (holm) means islet, and is thought to refer to the islet Helgeandsholmen in central Stockholm. According to Eric Chronicles the city is said to have been founded by Birger Jarl to protect Sweden from sea invasions made by Karelians after the pillage of Sigtuna on Lake Mälaren in 1187. The strategic and economic importance of the city made Stockholm an i … [Click Below for Full Description]
