HONE, William. The Queen's Matrimonial Ladder, A National Toy, With Fourteen Step Scenes: And Illustrations In Verse, With Eighteen Other Cuts.By The Author Of "The Political House That Jack Built". 25th Edition, London. Printed By And For William Hone, Ludgate-Hill. 1820.The Pamphlet And The Toy Together One Shilling.Pp24 including cover wraps and last two pages advertisements. Approx 22cm x 13.5cm. Fore edges unevenly trimmed, some staining and dustiness, the odd corner folded and lacking, recently resewn. With the very uncommon ladder "toy", folding printed pasteboard approx 15.1 cm x 6.3 cm, which matches the progress of Caroline of Brunswick's unhappy marriage to King George IV. The "steps" of the marriage ladder according to Hone were ; Qualification, Declaration, Acceptation, Alteration, Imputation, Exculpation, Emigration, Remigration,Consternation, Accusation, Publication, Indignation,Coronation, and finally Degradation. The pamphlet is a little worn as usual, the ladder in Very Good plus condition. A previous owner has added ink names under the illustrations on pp 4 & 5. This is a wonderfully scurrilous pamphlet, describing a scandalous episode in British constitutional history which created a huge furore at the time, with great public support for Caroline's cause. This is not an uncommon pamphlet, but the accompanying ladder is very hard to find in any condition.

1820. PLANCHE, James Robinson: (POLIDORI, John William). "The Vampire" Or, The Bride of The Isles. FIRST TIME. Theatre Royal, English Opera House, Strand. This Evening, Monday, August 7th, 1820. London, 1820. THE TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE OF "THE VAMPIRE" ON THE ENGLISH STAGE. Broadside, 12-7/8" x 8-1/2", edges slightly rumpled but apparently untrimed, closed tear to left foredge approximately 3-1/2" long, left side of paper with stab holes presumably bound up at one time, mild toning but overall VERY GOOD. As stated on the playbill "This piece is founded on the various traditions concerning THE VAMPIRES, which assert that they are Spirits, depraved of all Hope of Futurity, by the crimes committed in their mortal state - but, that they are permitted to roam the Earth, in whatever forms they please, with supernatural powers of Fascination - and, that they cannot be destroyed, so long as they sustain their dreadful existence, by imbibing the blood of female victims, whom they are first compelled to marry." Opening night reviews were enthusiastic and "was honored with unusually long continued applause". An interesting link between "The Vampire" and "Frankenstein" is that Peter Thomas Cooke who played the title role in The Vampyre at the Theatre Royale in 1820, was also the first actor to play the Frankenstein Monster in the London staging of Presumption. In fact, in 1826 a theatre-goer in London could take in a double bill and be treated to both monsters. Planche's play "The Vampire" was an adaptation of John Polidori's story "The Vampyre" - or, rather, a translation/adaptation of … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Crawford
London: Printed for Thomas Boys of Ludgate Hill printed by Thomas, 1820. Condition: Near fine. Quarto size, 212 pp. (not matching pagination, see below), with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing, although very much a parody, contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money, money alone, though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors, strangers perhaps to its very name, and still more to its practical use and management.. . is the mainspring of all human action, want, wish, and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI, "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member, but he may be fined by the Committee, for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV, "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club, the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned, the owner shall dine that day GRATIS". Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1759-1856) was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist, and like his brother George, is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George, who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens. This edition was orig … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Richard Philips, 1820. First edition, slim 8vo, pp. [4], 106; frontispiece map, 6 aquatint plates by Neele & Son after sketches by R. Stennett; near fine, sound copy in 20th century half brown morocco by Morrell, gilt-paneled spine, t.e.g. Issued as no. six of volume II of Phillips's series of Modern Voyages and Travels. "The author was a surgeon assigned to the naval hospital in Barbados in 1807 and later to a war vessel cruising through the islands. He spent about four years in Caribbean service and became thoroughly familiar with colonial society. His book presents an interesting picture of the rushing business conducted by the slave traders in Barbados on the eve of abolition and gives accounts of encounters with the Spanish and French during the course of the Napoleonic wars. The author saw little that was attractive in West Indian life and was greatly shocked by the general prevalence of immorality" (Ragatz, Guide For The Study Of British Caribbean History 1763-1834, p. 235). The trial of the presumptive Queen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response, Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy. The first volume contains the prosecution, the second the defence. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this first issue being scarce. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Taylor, John, of Caroline
Richmond, 1820. [2],iv,344pp. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, leather label. Text somewhat tanned and dampstained. Overall good to very good. An important work by America's great proponent of agrarian liberalism. Taylor was an important Constitutional theorist and states' rights advocate. He believed the greatest danger to American democracy lay in consolidation and in the creation of an aristocracy of "paper and patronage." This work is one of several in which Taylor sets forth his theory of the U.S. Constitution and related federal government policies (e.g. taxation, banking, and tariffs). It is also one of his rarest works, far harder to find than his NEW VIEWS OF THE CONSTITUTION, TYRANNY UNMASKED, or others. HOWES T59, "aa." SABIN 94486. HAYNES 18132. DAB XVIII, pp.331-33.

South America - Brazil].
No place, [ca 1820]. Washed pen and ink drawing over pencil on paper (watermark C & I Honig), coloured in a few places. Mounted on backing cardboard, ca. 515 x 405 mm (leaf size: 555 x 430 mm). The present large-format drawing, skilfully elaborated in great detail, must be counted among the products of the early 19th century enthusiasm for Latin America and exotic countries, occasioned by events such as the travels of Alexander von Humboldt or the marriage between the Habsburg princess Maria Leopoldina with Dom Pedro, Crown Prince of Portugal and later Emperor of Brazil, and inspired by several expeditions to Brazil bankrolled or led by European noblemen. To provide an understanding of these newly discovered landscapes, cities and cultures to Europeans, the expeditions' teams would regularly include a number of artists. Thomas Ender and Johann Moritz Rugendas were among the painters who accompanied the explorers, preparing sketches and preliminary drafts which they later turned into lithographs or engravings depicting the exotic scenes they saw. - While the present drawing is not entirely completed (the tip of the cactus at left is merely outlined in ink, and the foliage of the enormous tree at the centre is merely hinted at in pencilled lines), the artistic quality is outstanding, with persons and plants executed faithfully and in great detail, fully consistent with the work of an artist like Rugendas, who travelled South America between 1821 and 1825. - Slight staining and browning in places. Several edge tears, some reaching into the image or reinforced. From a Viennese … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bunny & Gold, Shoe Lane, 1820. Engraved title pages, numerous engraved plates, several folding. 3 vols. 8vo. Fine Copy of a Sporting Classic. Later brown three quarter morocco and cloth. Bookplates of Daniel Webster Evans laid in. Very good. Schwerdt I, pp. 133-4. A handsome copy of the octavo edition of this sporting classic (first published in 1801 in quarto), covering a profusion of field sports, as well as game laws. It went into many editions. Although this book is generally assumed to deal almost exclusively with hunting and shooting, and indeed is famous for its various portraits and descriptions of sporting dogs, over forty percent of it is actually devoted to angling, with 18 angling plates and extensive discussion of varieties of fish and where to take them, hooks and tackle, weather considerations, fish ponds, and other relevant subjects of angling interest. The book's exquisite engravings have ensured this work its lasting popularity.
