ASPIN, Jehoshaphat
London: printed for Samuel Leigh, 1820. 12mo. (5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches). [viii], 784 pp. Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 35 hand-coloured aquatint medallion plates. Later red morocco gilt by Morell, spine gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. First edition of a scarce English colour plate book, complete with the two extra plates. This work chronicles and describes in detail the military conflicts that George III (1738-1820), King of Great Britain and eventually the United Kingdom, was involved in from his accession to the throne in 1760 to the storming of Algiers [Algeria] in 1816. It includes the Seven Years' War, French Revolution, American Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, present-day India and more. His life and reign as king were marked by this long series of military conflicts in his kingdom, in Europe, and in continents beyond. "The illustrations are all circular, about 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and most delicately engraved" (Tooley). Contains the two extra plates, "Vittoria" and "Pampeluna," often absent; they are not mentioned in Abbey, and Tooley considered the work complete without them. Abbey Life 350; Prideaux pp. 14, 326; Tooley 70.

[Click Below for Full Description]

HERSCHEL (John Frederick William)
Cambridge: Printed by J. Smith, Printer to the University, 1820. First edition, 8vo (220 x 140 mm), viii, 506pp., 6 folding diagram plates to rear, some occasional light spotting, orig. boards, printed paper label to spine, rubbed, uncut. While at Cambridge Babbage and his friends in the Analytical Society fought a battle with the Cambridge establishment to replace the Newtonian dot notation for the calculus with the more powerful Leibnizian dx/dy notation. To this end, Babbage, Herschel and Peacock translated Lacroix's elementary treatise on the calculus which, like all continental works, followed Leibniz. The change over continued to move slowly and Babbage decided it was necessary to provide some worked examples, which took the form of the present works. Within a few years Babbage had won the day and British mathematicians, no longer impeded by an imperfect notation, began to catch up with their continental rivals.

GODWIN, WILLIAM
London: Longman, 1820. FIRST EDITION. In 1798 Thomas Robert Malthus published his Essay on the Principle of Population in response to William Godwin s ideas about the perfectibility of society advanced in Political Justice (1793). Godwin s beautiful system of perfect equality, Malthus wrote, would in theory end poverty, disease, and war, producing extraordinary encouragements to population. Because food production cannot keep up with population, poverty and misery would inevitably result. Godwin had acknowledged the population problem in 1793 but suggested that eclipsing the desire for sex by the development of intellectual pleasures could ease population growth. Malthus rejected Godwin s utopian vision. In 1820 Godwin rebutted Malthus s argument in the present book, Of Population. Godwin argued that reordering society would prevent the poverty cycle that Malthus posited. Accumulation of property in the hands of the few restricts the food supply. Changing this state of affairs would go far in feeding the poor. Moreover, by redistributing property for the benefit of the poor, they would acquire the habits of the middle classes, procreating less and thereby solving the Malthusian problem. Provenance: H. Bradley Martin, with bookplate. Original boards, paper spine label. Spine repaired. Some foxing. A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Dimensioni 145x190 circa." In the XIX century, Michela De Vito became quite a famous artist. She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. "A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subejct more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe this artist. 1820. [Click Below for Full Description]

Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Dimensioni 145x190 circa In the XIX century, Michela De Vito became quite a famous artist. This gentleness is quite evident in her figures and in … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Dorchester County, Eastern Shore, Maryland: c.1820s-1830s?]. [4]pp. Quarto. Bifolium; wove paper. Folds; separations along horizontal folds with some minor losses, not affecting sense; good. Autobiographical memoir, apparently unpublished, concerning the beginnings of Methodism in Dorchester on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Discussing the progress of the Second Great Awakening in that place, the manuscript notes the possible freeing of a slave, the Revolutionary War-era religious persecution of the Methodists, and mentions such important church leaders as Joseph Hartley, Caleb B. Pedicord, Joseph Everett, Bishop Francis Asbury, Richard Whatcoat, and the author's own mother who ".was placed leader of the Woman's class." (p[3]) Intriguingly, the manuscript contains a reference to "servants that belonged" and to the manumission of a girl-both possible references to slavery and, in this context, its incompatibility with the tenets of Methodism: "[The author's mother] Catichised [sic] her child send on the servants [slaves?] that belonged to Br. [Brother?] B.T. [the writer's uncle?] as she had But one and that not long soon after her own soul got free she manimated [manumitted] the only Girl she had." In 1780, as a young boy, this native Eastern Shore writer reports hearing Joseph Hartley preach under a large oak as the local Episcopal church vestry "refused to let him in the House" to preach. The locals had never heard such loud, noisy preaching and were quite astonished that they were told to convert or never enter in the kingdom of God, a doctrine entirely unheard of by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann WALCH Kempten 1757 - Augsburg 1815)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Edinburgh: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London; and for Archibald Constable and Company and John Ballantyne, Edinburgh, 1820. 4 pp preliminary Vol I ads dated Sept 1820; 1 page Vol III undated ads. Original light paper-covered blue boards with light brown paper-covered spines, with spine labels. First Edition of Scott's sequel to THE MONASTERY (published earlier in 1820) -- sited during the Scottish Reformation. Taking place from July 1567 to May 1568, the novel follows the adventures of a supposedly-illegitimate orphan, Roland Graeme, against the backdrop of the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots at Lochleven, her enforced abdication, her escape from the Castle, defeat at Langside and subsequent flight to England. The events covered in the novel seal the triumph of the Protestant, pro-English party in England and ultimately pave the way to the Union of the English and Scottish Crowns under a Protestant monarch. [Edin. Univ.] This copy has the title pages in the first state (with the publishers' imprint occupying five lines in addition to the date). 1820. [the Rhiwlas Library set] By the Author of "Waverley". In Three Volumes. Edinburgh: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London; and for Archibald Constable and Company and John Ballantyne, Edinburgh, 1820. 4 pp preliminary Vol I ads dated January 1820. Original light blue boards with light brown paper-covered spines, with spine labels. First Edition, first printing, of Scott's tale set in the lawless border area on the eve of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland. It revolves around the abbey of Kennaquhair, which Scott based upon Melrose Abbey not far from his home. Two brothers brought up on the grounds of the abbey vie for the attention of orphan Mary (who had been cheated out of her inheritance by a border baron) -- when along comes an English knight fleeing the Court of Queen Elizabeth, also attracted to Mary. Add in a duel and a supernatural White Lady. The brother who loses out in the courtship of Mary takes monastic orders and resurfaces, later in 1820, in Scott's THE ABBOT. (THE MONASTERY and THE ABBOT were published between two of Scott's best-known tales -- IVANHOE in late 1819 (but dated 1820), and KENILWORTH in early 1821.) This first printing is easily differentiated from the second in that the second states "Second Edition" on its title pages (there would be no third); in the last line of Vol I page 226, "condition" is spelled either incorrectly or correctly in copies of both printings, so although it is not therefore an actual "issue point," in this copy it is spelled correctly.
