        Histoire Naturelle des Orangers

Paris: Imprimerie de Mme. Hérrisant le Doux, 1820. Small folio. Half-title, 2pp. dedication to the Duchesse de Berry, 109 fine stipple-engraved plates printed in colors and finished by hand after Poiteau by V. Bonnefoi, Chailly, Dien, Gabriel, Legrand, T. Susémihl and Texier. Scattered minor foxing. 19th century green morocco, covers bordered in gilt, spine with double raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, glazed yellow endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a cloth box.Provenance: Barons of Brownlow, Belton House (armorial bookplate)First edition of this beautiful work depicting sweet and bitter oranges, lemons, limes, citrons, and grapefruit. This work "contains exquisite drawings of every known variety of orange, lemon and grape fruit, and their congeners, fruits that hang from the leaves, alternately like suns or moons, with every kind of rind, and shaped like gourds or pitchers ... or again, authentic globes of fire, whether pale, as of moonlight, or red-gold like the sun but half-hidden, as in poetry, in its own green shade. A beautiful and inspiring work, in its way not less so than Redouté's Les Liliacées ... or Les Roses" (Great Flower Books). The text covers every aspect of citrus fruit: its history and mythology, its taxonomy and cultivar descriptions of sweet oranges, bitter oranges, bergamot oranges, limes, grapefruit, lumies, lemons, citrons and related genera. The author, Antoine Risso, a French apothecary and botanist, lived and worked in Nice in the south of France.Antoine Poiteau, the illustrator, began his career as an apprentice gardener at the Jardin des Plantes, and spent some time in the Caribbean collecting plants before returning to Paris in 1800 and turning to botanical illustration, with an initial style modelled on Van Spaendonck and Redouté. Apart from the illustrations, he provided much information on citrus varieties native to the Tropics. The dedicatee of the work was the Duchesse de Berry, daughter of Francis I of Naples, and her crowned coat-of-arms appears on the title-page. First published in 19 parts between July 1818 and August 1820, a second edition would be published in 1872, though the present first edition is much preferred.Oak Spring Pomona 76; Nissen BBI 1640; Great Flower Books p.73; Dunthorne 263; Stafleu and Cowan 9248.

An Inquiry into Certain Errors relative to Insanity; and their Consequences; Physical, Moral, and Civil

One folding printed table. ix, [1], 320 pp. 8vo, orig. grey boards (upper joint with a bit of wear), printed paper label on spine (a little flaked), uncut. London: T. & G. Underwood, 1820. First edition. Burrows (1777-1846), following many years as a successful general practitioner in London, turned his attention in 1816 to the treatment of insanity. He kept a small asylum at Chelsea and later established a large one at Clapham. He became a leading authority on insanity and claimed that nine out of ten of the insane could be cured. This important book contains a survey of psychiatric illnesses throughout Great Britain, with statistical comparisons to other European countries. Burrows was one of the first to make progress in defining a pathology of insanity, which served at last to raise psychiatry to the level of medicine. His Commentaries on the Causes, Forms, Symptoms, and Treatments, Moral and Medical, of Insanity (1828) was by far the most complete and practical treatise then published. Fine copy in original state. This book was translated into German by the famous psychiatrist J.C.A. Heinroth in 1822. ❧ Hunter & Macalpine, p. 778. Zilboorg, A History of Medical Psychology, p. 412.

New York: Printed by C.S. Van Winkle, 1820. Seven parts bound in two volumes. Large octavo. 19th century calf, spines gilt extra. Bound without wrappers and adverts. Early manuscript index on front binder's blank in both volumes. Spines darkened and slightly crazed, joints a bit worn and slightly cracked in places (but sound), occasional spotting and foxing to Part I, brown spot in fore-edge of Part VII, clean 5 cm tear in top edge of leaf 63/4 of Part VII, with no loss, still a good set in contemporary dress. Old morocco faced slipcase. First editions, first printings, of each part of Irving's second major sequence publication, with BAL's state 'A' of the text on page 240. Neither the terminal blank for Part I, nor the slip against piracy that was inserted in some copies of Part II are present. THE SKETCH BOOK is among Irving's masterworks, printing for the first time in complete book form "Rip Van Winkle" (Pt. I), "Old Christmas" (Pt. V), and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (Pt. VI). "That Americans here first read of Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane is not so important in influencing the culture of the country, as that they learned of these and other gentlemen, and of the Indians, and of old England, through the medium of a musical, rhythmical style, quiet humor and dreamy charm, which instinctively taught taste and sweetness, 'taking pleasure and giving pleasure and always playing the companion rather than the teacher'" - GROLIER AMERICAN HUNDRED. Proper sets in original wrappers are rare and beyond the means of most collectors, and today sound sets, with each part in the first printing, in contemporary bindings, are increasingly less common.       [Various places including Concepción, Valparaiso, Santiago, Lima, and Pisco, 1820. [28]; [52]pp. Loose gatherings, previously stitched. Small but evident stab holes at gutter margin not affecting text. Light dust soiling, leaves somewhat tanned. Written in an elegant, cursive hand. Very good. Two lengthy manuscript letters written by the captain of the merchant ship Beaver addressed to his wife that provide a lucid and lively account of his trading adventures on the west cost of South America in Peru and Chile in the late 1810s and 1820. The letters provide excellent descriptions of the many places visited by the ship and its captain, whose travels in the region during this period allow him also to relate his eyewitness accounts of the struggles for South American independence. The first letter begins by briefly describing the outset of the voyage, departing New York on July 1, 1817, sailing around Cape Horn and arriving in Valparaiso on July 27. Events begin to go awry when he sails for Concepción; upon his arrival in Talcahuano Bay, his ship is impounded by the Royalist army and navy defending the city against Patriot rebels. The length of his involuntary stay allows him to write at length about the city and officers of the Royalist military, and to hatch several intricate escape plans, all left unexecuted. By April 1818, he seems to be on the verge of losing the Beaver, with the Royalists intent on selling it to generate funds, but their decisive defeat at the battle of Maipu on April 5 intervenes, after which point he is transported on a navy frigate back to Lima to argue his case for repossessing his ship before the Viceroy of Peru. The second, longer letter, picks up with his negotiations to reclaim the ship. Although he is not immediately successful in accomplishing this feat, the Viceroy deems him harmless enough to travel freely, during which time he travels to Santiago, Concepción and back to Peru. Finally, at the beginning of 1819, the colonial government agrees to revoke their order to seize the ship and to restore the Beaver to its captain, however the various conflicts between Spanish and Chilean navies and resulting blockades and impediments to neutral ships prevent him from departing Callao immediately. When he is finally able to travel and trade freely at the end of February 1819, he sails first to Pisco, and then spends the rest of the trading along the cost of Peru, mainly in wheat, brandy, and cotton, giving accounts of the ports he visits and of his adventures along the way. By the beginning of 1820, he has chartered multiple ships, and is sending large amounts of cargo between Peru and Valparaiso. The writer's last journey is to Guayaquil in March 1820, where he loads his ship with cocoa and sails back to Lima, where he begins preparing to return to the United States, and gives a final appraisal of his accomplishments over three years. A fascinating narrative of South American commerce and adventure, from a critical time in the history of the region.

A Full Report Of The Trial Of Her Majesty Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Queen of England, Before The Peers Of Great Britain

London - T. Dolby, 1820 Book. Good. Hardcover. The scarce first issue of the parliamentary report ofa trial which rocked the British political establishment. In his attempt to deprive his estranged wife of her title, the newly crowned George IV unwittingly turned her into a focus for anti-government and anti-monachical sentiment. The trial of the presumptiveQueen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response,Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy. The first volume contains the prosecution, the second the defence. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this first issue being scarce. The pagination carriesfrom the Dolby Parliamentary Register. The relevant sections have essentially been excised and bound into a discrete work. Volume two is lacking a title page, and is missing pages 1638-1671, with pages 827-858 from volume one apparently bound in instead by mistake. While the pagination is occasionally irregular, this appears to be the only loss. Condition: In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the edges and spines. There is some light marking to the boards. Internally a little age toned with some light foxing here and there. The misplaced pages in volume 2 (827-858) have been poorly trimmed. The text is unafected. N. B. the pagination is occasionally irregular, however, loss appears to beconfined to pages 1638-1671 in volume 2. Firmly bound. Overall: GOOD.

Construction Construed, And Constitutions Vindicated, Only Ed, 1820.

1820. An Important Southern Voice in the Political Debates That Followed the War of 1812 Taylor, John, Of Caroline [1753-1824]. Construction Construed, and Constitutions Vindicated. Richmond: Printed by Shepherd & Pollard, 1820. [ii], iv, 344 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Contemporary sheep, rebacked retaining existing spine, blind fillets to boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine, hinges mended. Moderate rubbing to extremities, some wear to corners, a few shallow scuffs to boards. Moderate toning and light foxing to text, small chip to fore-edges of leaf containing pp. 281-282. Faint early owner signature to head of front board, owner inscription dated 1857 to head of title page interior otherwise clean. A handsome copy. * Only edition. Taylor's work is an essential part of the political and intellectual history of the South, especially Southern constitutional theories used to justify secession. Construction Construed was Taylor's response to a series of post-War of 1812 developments, including John Marshall's Supreme Court decision in McCulloch v. Maryland, the widespread issuance of paper money by banks, proposals for a protective tariff and the attempt to bar slavery from Missouri. Along with many other Southerners, Taylor saw measures like these as part of a trend to establish an "artificial capitalist sect" and a centralized national government that would corrupt the virtue of the American people and upset the proper constitutional balance between state and federal authority.
