      Napoli 1820 - Un'artista, dell' 800 di un certo rilievo è Michela De Vito, figlia o sorella, non si sa bene, di Camillo De Vito, fecondissimo pittore di gouache, rappresentanti soprattutto vedute e scene di costume di Napoli. Attiva a Napoli nei primi decenni del XIX secolo viene alle volta confusa con Michele de Vito. "Pittrice raffinata, di grossa abilità disegnata, aveva la caratteristica d'ingentilire la fisionomia contrariamente a quanto solevano fare alcuni suoi colleghi, pur onorati da commesse Reali". Così la definirono De Rosa e Trastulli nel saggio introduttivo al catalogo della mostra di Chieti Il costume popolare abruzzese tra 700 e 800. Questa gentilezza dei caratteri è evidente anche nelle figure, come pure in maniera più raffinata sono presentati gli stessi vestiti, delle opere che proponiamo. Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Opere di grandissima qualità, databili al 1820 circa, in perfetto stato di conservazione, racchiuse entro moderna cornice dorata. She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. "A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subejct more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe this artist. Il gruppo di lavori in nostro possesso riguarda la costa ligure, parte della Toscana con particolare attenzione all’isola d’Elba, e un nutrito gruppo di opere sui laghi lombardi. La qualità delle opere risulta varia e contrastata, particolarmente incentrata sulla realizzazione del paesaggio naturistico, raramente arricchito da figure umane. La mano del pittore dilettante è chiara, tuttavia i lavori si fanno apprezzare per il loro aspetto decorativo, per la loro gradevolezza di fondo e soprattutto per l’interesse iconografico dei luoghi raffigurati. La tecnica usata è quella del veloce disegno a matita successivamente colorato con l’uso dell’acquarello. These works present views of the Liguria region, parts of Tuscany (especially the island of Elba), and a large number dedicated to the lakes of Lombardy. It can be seen that they were created by an amateur painter and their greatest interest lies in their iconographical an decorative values. Numerierung der Zeit. Bei Gabriel Thouin (* 1747 in Paris; † 9. März 1829), einem der damals berühmtesten Gartenarchitekten Europas und einem der Hauptvertreter des frühen Landschaftsgartens, den man in Frankreich Jardin romantique nannte, lernte Peter Joseph Lenné im Rahmen seiner Ausbildung zum Gartenbaumeister 1811-12 die typische Gestaltung (per Kurvenlineal entworfene weitbogig geschwungene Wege und hosenartige Wegekreuzungen, Ausgreifen des Planungsraumes auf ganze Landschaften, Einbindung von Industriearchitekturen und anderen vorhandenen Bauten, Verwendung exotischer Pflanzen). Sie beeinflusste die späteren Arbeiten Lennés und seiner Schüler („Lenné-Meyer-Schule") deutlich (nach wikipedia). Die Tafeln mit Abbildungen verschiedener Garten- und Parkanlagen, im Rande jeweils angeordnet architektonischen Zierelemente (Brücken, Pavillons, Gartengebäude), gartentechnischen Details (Labyrinte, Heckenformen) sowie verschiedene Ausstattungselemente (Brunnen, Schaukeln, Gondeln, Denkmäler und Gartenmöbel). Die Pläne, zunächst bewusst monochrom gehalten, erlebten weitere Auflagen, wobei erst in der letzten von 1838 die Lithografien teilweise zur Steigerung der dekorativen Wirkung von Hand koloriert wurden. Die vorliegende Mappe enthält die unbeschnittenen breitrandigen Pläne, die aus Kostengründen in 10 Lieferungen herausgegeben wurden, in Losebattform in den Original Mantelbögen. Solche ungebundenen Exemplare des seltenen Werkes sind selbst unvollständig kaum zu finden, gelegentlich tauchen Pläne als Grafikangebot im Handel auf, da die einzelnen Pläne sehr dekorativ präsentiert werden können. G.T. débute sa carrière au service des Terrasses de la Ville de Paris, et dessine des jardins à ses heures de liberté. C'est ainsi qu'il fait des propositions pour l'aménagement du Jardin du Roi à la demande de son frère André, qui en est devenu lui-même le jardinier-chef. Engagé dans la Garde Nationale dès le début de la Révolution, il devient, en 1812, inspecteur des Champs-Élysées, des avenues des Invalides et du Champ de Mars. Durant toute cette période, il dessine des projets de jardins, et quelquefois en assure la plantation.         Journal of a Tour in the Levant

      London: John Murray,, 1820. 3 volumes, octavo. Original buff paper-covered boards, printed paper labels to spines. Housed in a black cloth flat back solander box. 22 plates, 6 of them hand-coloured, 5 of these being aquatints, of which 2 are folding panoramas – Zante and Smyrna – and one being a double-sided facsimile, 2 folding maps, illustrations to the text. All half-titles present. Slightly rubbed, some minor chips at the heads and tails of the spines, spines mildly creased, upper joint of volume III starting, two leaves in volume I badly opened with slight marginal loss, and a few others leaves with minor splits, but overall an exceptional set. First and only edition of what Atabey describes as "this important work" and Blackmer a "very interesting work." Turner's "chatty" account includes observations on local manners and customs; an account of a meeting and conversation with Ali Pasha; and lengthy descriptions of two visits to Cyprus. Decidedly uncommon, exceedingly so in boards. Turner's father was a friend of George Canning, to whom this book is dedicated, who obtained a clerkship in the Foreign Office for William in 1809. In 1811 he was attached to the embassy of Robert Liston and accompanied him to Constantinople. Turner "remained in the East for five years, and during that time visited most parts of the Ottoman empire, as well as the islands and mainland of Greece. While in Asia Minor he endeavoured to emulate Leander and Lord Byron by swimming the Hellespont, and, failing in the attempt, palliated his ill success by pointing out that he had tried to swim from Asia to Europe, a far more difficult feat than Byron's passage from Europe to Asia" (ODNB). Byron responded in a letter to John Murray, and Turner "in a counter-rejoinder, overwhelmed his adversary with quotations from ancient and modern topographers." In 1824 he returned to Constantinople as secretary to the British embassy, and for 18 months during Stratford Canning's absence was minister-plenipotentiary. In 1829 he was appointed envoy-extraordinary and minister-plenipotentiary to Colombia, a post from which he retired from the service after nine years. He died in 1867.

Mit einigen kleineren, oberflächliche Bereibungen und Abplatzungen, den Gesamteindruck jedoch kaum störend. Insgesamt von schöner Erhaltung. Reizende Folge von fein gezeichneten und minutiös aquarellierten bzw. mit Gouache-Farben kolorierten Ansichten der Sächischen Residenzstadt Dresden und ihren schönsten Bauwerken entlang der Elbe: Dargestellt werden (wie in der Bildunterschrift angeführt): Dresden gegen Mitternacht, Dresden mit dem Zwinger, Die Palais Gärten zu Neu-Dresden, Dresden gegen Abend, Schloß Tharandt im Plauischen Grunde, Pillnitz gegen Morgen, Moritzburg gegen Mitternacht, Vestung Königstein gegen Mitternacht, Meißen gegen Abend, Meißen gegen Morgen, Meißen gegen Abend. – Zwar finden sich keinerlei Hinweise auf den Künstler, es dürfte sich bei ihm aber um einen geübten Miniaturenmaler gehandelt haben, dem die klassischen Ansichten Dresdens und seines Umlandes, wie etwa der Canaletto-Blick auf das südliche Elbufer, ebenso vertraut waren wie die zeitgenössische Staffierung des Vordergrundes mit Booten, Fischern, Fuhrwerken und Flaneuren.

      1820. A Bottle of Smoke!! [Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821)]. [Pains and Penalties Bill]. All a Bottle of Smoke!! Or John Bull and the Secret Committee. [London]: Published by John Fairburn, July 1820. 11" x 17" hand-colored lithograph. A few chips, minor tears and light soiling to margins, colors vivid. A well-preserved copy. * The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational trials in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage, Caroline was eventually banished to a private residence after the birth of her daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1814 Caroline moved to Europe. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer, the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of the title of Queen Consort and dissolve her marriage. (The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Bergami, while in Italy.) The bill was approved by the House of Lords, but it was not submitted to the House of Commons, where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts, Caroline remained a popular favorite. Indeed, her popularity increased during the trial. Although she prevailed, she fell ill and died shortly after the coronation of George IV. She was certain that she was poisoned by one of the King's agents. The trial inspired numerous books, pamphlets and ephemera, such as this anonymous print. One of many publications that supported Caroline's cause, it dismisses the Bill as both as groundless and a perversion of the legal system. John Bull pulls a "bottle of smoke" out of the seat of justice, the Green Bag, while a serpent representing George IV slithers out of a hole in its side. Several members of the House of Lords with padlocked mouths stand in the background.       1820 - A Bottle of Smoke!! [Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821)]. [Pains and Penalties Bill]. All a Bottle of Smoke!! Or John Bull and the Secret Committee. [London]: Published by John Fairburn, July 1820. 11" x 17" hand-colored lithograph. A few chips, minor tears and light soiling to margins, colors vivid. A well-preserved copy. * The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational trials in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage, Caroline was eventually banished to a private residence after the birth of her daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1814 Caroline moved to Europe. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer, the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of the title of Queen Consort and dissolve her marriage. (The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Bergami, while in Italy.) The bill was approved by the House of Lords, but it was not submitted to the House of Commons, where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts, Caroline remained a popular favorite. Indeed, her popularity increased during the trial. Although she prevailed, she fell ill and died shortly after the coronation of George IV. She was certain that she was poisoned by one of the King's agents. The trial inspired numerous books, pamphlets and ephemera, such as this anonymous print. One of many publications that supported Caroline's cause, it dismisses the Bill as both as groundless and a perversion of the legal system. John Bull pulls a "bottle of smoke" out of the seat of justice, the Green Bag, while a serpent representing George IV slithers out of a hole in its side. Several members of the House of Lords with padlocked mouths stand in the background. A observer, le cavalier porte un casque en métal et non un bonnet de fourrure.On peut observer que les troupes que Shur donne pour des "Cosaques" sont en fait des Bachkirs ou des Kalmoucks. Leurs tenues et leurs équipement est très proche de ceux du XIVème siècle.Peintre d'histoire, dessinateur et lithographe. - Directeur de l'Académie de France à Rome de 1828 à 1835, membre de l'Institut. - Fils de : Vernet, Antoine Charles Horace dit Carle (1758-1836) également peintre et lithographe. - Petit-fils de : Vernet, Josep. Gravure à l'aquatinte et au pointillé par Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet d'après le tabl. d'Horace Vernet. Jazet fut, comme on sait, le graveur attitré d'Horace Vernet qu'il vulgarisa. Afm. 35,4 x 54,6 cm.De Industri?le Revolutie in de 19de eeuw bracht Antwerpen een enorme uitbreiding van het handelsvervoer en de stad groeide uit tot een wereldhaven. Stoomkracht voerde de vaarsnelheid van schepen op en de nieuwe werelddelen zorgden nu voor de bevoorrading van grondstoffen en dienden tevens als afzetmarkt voor bewerkte goederen.De maritieme groothandel had zijn weerslag op de stad en het omliggende. Voor de ontwikkeling van de handel in de 16de eeuw moesten de oude poorten, bruggen en ruien uit de middeleeuwen verdwijnen. Zo werd ook in de 19de eeuw Antwerpen herschapen, maar op een veel grotere schaal. De stad trok werkkrachten van het land aan en de bevolking groeide. Rondom de stadskern werden allerlei straten en wijken gebouwd, zodat de stad snel uitbreidde. De oude fortengordel, de Spaanse vesten, moesten hiervoor afgebroken worden.De kunstenaar lijkt met de pastorale voorgrond, de koeien, het melkmeisje, de slapende boer, nog even de oude tijd te willen vasthouden. Op een afstand leggen de stoomschepen in de stad aan, terwijl het leven op de Linkeroever nog niet zo snel gaat. Nog even.Prijs: ?2.250,- (incl. lijst).
