For nineteenth century readers, Ivanhoe was perhaps the most celebrated of Scott's novels (according to Leslie Stephen, it was "Scott's culminating success in a book-selling sense, and marked the highest point both of his literary and social prosperity."). Before Ivanhoe, Scott's plots were drawn from Scottish history, but Ivanhoe launched a major change, based on English history and set earlier than any novel Scott had yet written, at the time of the Crusades. First released 20 December 1819, but with 1820 on the title page, the first-issue printing of 6000 copies was increased to 10,000 for this second edition, issued sometime after 15 January 1820 (first edition, third issue) and before 2 March 1820, when Catharina Crawley (possibly Catharina Crawley Boevey, who married Samuel James Ballard on 21 November 1822, in Flaxley, Gloucestershire) singed and dated the title page of our vol. I. "Ivanhoe is essentially a moral work. It is an intense consideration of misogyny and racial oppression, in which the attempted rape of Rebecca the Jewess by the dominant figure of the Norman master race, Brian de Bois-Guilbert, is a powerful symbol of the themes of the novel. Cockburn (1779-1847) was a pupil of Paul Sandby, who was many years professor of landscape-drawing at the Royal Military Academy. Cockburn “became a very accomplished artist. During periods of leaveÂ… he executed many drawings of continental scenery, which were engraved and published under the titles of Swiss Scenery (London, 1820), Views of the Valley of Aosta (London, 1822), et al.Â… These drawings supplied the continental ‘scenesÂ’ for illustrated editions, annuals, and similar works of various descriptions for long afterwardsÂ… Cockburn was in the habit of using the camera lucida to insure exactness of landscape detail” (DNB). Handcoloured paper globe comprising six gores measuring 170 x 65 mm., wonderfully preserved with the original cord ties within the publisher's folding card case with printed onlays; accompanied by a folding suite of 15 handcoloured lithographic plates measuring 97 x 130 mm. depicting the peoples of the Earth, and a loose engraved card sheet detailing the orbit and poles of the earth. A splendid early nineteenth-century German handcoloured paper globe, here offered complete with the original publisher's ensemble containing a folding suite of 15 plates depicting native peoples of the earth and other educational aids. Two of the plates depict Australian Aboriginal subjects. The globe and its accompaniments are a fine example of late enlightenment publishing for the benefit of children. The publisher Schutz states his plan for a novel educational aid 'to facilitate the introduction and use of geographic education in schools about the nature and classification of the earth'. By presenting the countries of the world as a readily assembled globe to be handled by children, abstract geographical concepts could be grasped with relative ease.The paper globe is significant for the information that accompanies it, especially the suite of 15 folding plates illustrating the peoples of the world. Geographers and ethnologists of the early nineteenth-century were fascinated by the relationship between race, climate and environment. In this wonderful package Schutz presents the regions of the earth as a paper globe alongside skilfully lithographed depictions of its peoples. In this way geographical space is linked to costumes and appearances in a manner comprehensible for children. Two of the plates depict Australian Aborigines, one from Van Diemen's Land and the other from New Holland (specifically, Western Australia), who is curiously illustrated with a bow and arrow. The Pacific Islands are represented by a Tahitian warrior in a tapa wrap brandishing an axe.In addition to the paper globe and folding plates, the folding case contains a loose handcoloured engraved card sheet with several diagrams explaining the orbit and poles of the earth. The card is printed on both sides and includes delicate engravings of the sun's obit and the relationship between the tilt of the earth and her seasons. The card is attached to a printed letterpress sheet elucidating the diagrams in further detail.This example is a rarity, here offered complete in the original publisher's folding case with four detailed letterpress onlays. A folding flap protecting the ethnological portraits features a further fine lithographic plate titled "Künstlicher erd Globus" (reproduction earth globe). This lithograph is a humorous composite, featuring amongst other figures an Ottoman maiden reclining on a divan facing an African beauty flanked by a lion and a crocodile. Paper children's globes are rare by their very nature, and this example preserved in its complete, original condition is an unusual survival. In fine condition.

Stoomkracht voerde de vaarsnelheid van schepen op en de nieuwe werelddelen zorgden nu voor de bevoorrading van grondstoffen en dienden tevens als afzetmarkt voor bewerkte goederen.De maritieme groothandel had zijn weerslag op de stad en het omliggende. Voor de ontwikkeling van de handel in de 16de eeuw moesten de oude poorten, bruggen en ruien uit de middeleeuwen verdwijnen. Zo werd ook in de 19de eeuw Antwerpen herschapen, maar op een veel grotere schaal. De stad trok werkkrachten van het land aan en de bevolking groeide. Rondom de stadskern werden allerlei straten en wijken gebouwd, zodat de stad snel uitbreidde. De oude fortengordel, de Spaanse vesten, moesten hiervoor afgebroken worden.De kunstenaar lijkt met de pastorale voorgrond, de koeien, het melkmeisje, de slapende boer, nog even de oude tijd te willen vasthouden. Herman Landon Vail (1790-1870), each volume signed by him Cotton Mather, FRS (February 12, 1663 – February 13, 1728; A.B. 1678, Harvard College; A.M. 1681, honorary doctorate 1710, University of Glasgow) was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. Known for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials, he also left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention. He was subsequently denied the Presidency of Harvard College which his father, Increase, had held. Mather wrote more than 450 books and pamphlets, and his ubiquitous literary works made him one of the most influential religious leaders in America. Mather set the moral tone in the colonies, and sounded the call for second- and third-generation Puritans, whose parents had left England for the New England colonies of North America, to return to the theological roots of Puritanism. The most important of these, Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), comprises seven distinct books, many of which depict biographical and historical narratives. From his religious training, Mather viewed the importance of texts for elaborating meaning and for bridging different moments of history—linking, for instance, the Biblical stories of Noah and Abraham with the arrival of such eminent leaders as John Eliot, John Winthrop, and his own father, Increase. Highly influential, Mather was a force to be reckoned with in secular, as well as in spiritual, matters. After the fall of James II of England, in 1688, Mather was among the leaders of the successful revolt against James' governor of the consolidated Dominion of New England, Sir Edmund Andros. Mather was not known for writing in a neutral, unbiased perspective. Many, if not all, of his writings had bits and pieces of his own personal life in them or were written for personal reasons. In 1689, Mather published Memorable Providences, detailing the supposed afflictions of several children in the Goodwin family in Boston. Catholic washerwoman Goody Glover was convicted of witchcraft and executed in this case. Robert Calef, a contemporary critic of Mather, considered this book responsible for laying the groundwork for the Salem witch trials three years later: Mr Cotton Mather, was the most active and forward of any Minister in the Country in those matters, taking home one of the Children, and managing such Intreagues with that Child, and after printing such an account of the whole, in his Memorable Providences, as conduced much to the kindling of those Flames, that in Sir Williams time threatened the devouring of this Country. Nineteenth-century historian Charles Wentworth Upham shared the view that the afflicted in Salem were imitating the Goodwin children, but put the blame on both Cotton and his father, Increase Mather: They are answerable... more than almost any other men have been, for the opinions of their time. It was, indeed a superstitious age; but made much more so by their operations, influence, and writings, beginning with Increase Mather's movement, at the assembly of Ministers, in 1681, and ending with Cotton Mather's dealings with the Goodwin children, and the account thereof which he printed and circulated far and wide. Housed in a custom folding chemise and half morocco slipcase. $4500.First expanded edition of this major compilation of AmericaÂ’s constitutions, featuring printings of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the federal Constitution, and the constitutions of 23 states—including the 1780 Massachusetts Constitution, the “oldest functioning constitution in the world”—the first collection with the most recent constitutions of Alabama (1819) and Maine (1820), scarce in original paper-covered boards, housed in a custom chemise, slipcase.“Independence destroyed the old legal foundation of the states, and made it necessary to provide a new oneÂ… As early as May 1775, colonies began to apply to Congress for advice to guide them” (Hinsdale, American Government, 64). This volume contains the pre-revolutionary Charter of Rhode Island, the 1776 constitutions of Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia, the Constitution of New York (1777) and the 1780 Constitution of Massachusetts, which was authored by John Adams and remains “one of the great enduring documents of the American RevolutionÂ… the oldest functioning written constitution in the world” (McCullough, 225). Contemporary bookseller's ticket and ownership inscription, with occasional neat pencil annotations to the text. Spine and corners rubbed, joints repaired, a few light scratches to covers, some light spotting throughout. A very good copy in a contemporary binding. First edition. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place" (ODNB). Very good. **** OCLC lists just one copy in the British Library***An important title and American classic that introduced iconic stories like Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The first four American installments were collected into a single volume and self-published by Irving in London, under John Miller's Burlington Arcade imprint, on February 16, 1820. Miller's April bankruptcy left those copies collecting dust. John Murray took over production, making these Miller title page copies extremely scarce. In July of 1820, Murray published the second volume with the final three American installments.

Octavo, contemporary three-quarter vellum, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red morocco spine labels, marbled sides and speckled edges. $2600.Beautiful collection of 96 miniature plaster medallions in three volumes by master carver Giovanni Liberotti, depicting famous works of art, both ancient and modern, in the collections of the Vatican, the Capitoline Museum, the Farnese Gallery, Palazzo Barberini, Villa Borghese, and other private collections in Rome, Florence, Naples, Milan, Paris, Dresden and Copenhagen. Mounted and captioned in three contemporary boxes bound as books, they comprise “a minutely detailed cabinet of neoclassical knowledge and art.”When the opportunity to take the “Grand Tour” spread from the aristocracy to the new industrial and professional elites, tourist destinations such as Rome shifted their attention from the privileged class to meeting the travel needs of the monied middle-class, including a healthy souvenir trade. Souvenir engravings of tourist attractions began to appear everywhere. In addition to albums of engraved views, “the Grand Tour offered another very popular type of travel souvenir, the now nearly forgotten cameosÂ… The taste for these engraved antique gems was revived as part of the classical revival and later reproduced as miniature plaster castsÂ… Mounted in faux book bindings, these plaster cameos [provided] a minutely detailed cabinet of neoclassical knowledge and art” (Princeton University). This wonderful “cabinet” of 96 souvenir plaster medallions depicts famous works of art, from classical sculpture and portrait busts, to Renaissance paintings, to the works of neoclassicists Canova, Thorvaldsen and Gibson. Representative masterpieces include da VinciÂ’s “Last Supper,” BerniniÂ’s “Apollo and Daphne,” and TitianÂ’s “Flora.” Giovanni Liberotti promoted himself as a “Carver of Cameos and Purveyor of Gems Ancient and Modern.” The Italian word “impronte” on the spines of the boxes (meaning “stamp” or “impression”), refers specifically to plaster casts, as opposed to enamel relief medallions or actual shell cameos. They measure from 3/4 to 2-1/2 inches across. Mounted to the front and rear pastedowns are numbered keys in contemporary Italian manuscript, identifying each of the works. A rare and unusual set in nearly fine condition, with only a few tiny dust spots to medallions and minor rubbing to boxes.

A lovely copy.In the history of book production ""there is no more attractive figure than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books"" (Prideaux, 120-23). One of Ackermann's most lucrative projects was his remarkable Picturesque Tours, a series of seven books produced between 1820-28. This is his Tour Along the Rhine, with beautifully hand-colored aquatints by Daniel Havell and Thomas Sutherland after paintings by Christian Georg Schutz, depicting views of Mentz, the Castle of Furstenberg, the Church of Johannes, Pfalz Castle and the town of Kaub, the salmon fishery at Lurley, Coblentz, Bornhofen, Cologne and other sites along the river. The plates were pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and disseminating fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuries. The folding map shows the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. With accompanying text by Baron von Gerning describing the history and culture of the area (first published in German in 1819, without illustrations). First issue, without plate numbers in the top right corners. Tooley notes that plates 2 and 3 have variants dated either September or October; Abbey argues persuasively that to call either state an issue ""must remain doubtful,"" particularly given that large-paper copies have also been seen with the two plates dated October. At any rate, the quality of plates in either state are the same high standard; Abbey notes that ""there are definitely some later issues of the book, and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these plates are poor and the coloring less good"" (Abbey 217). This copy has plates 2 and 3 dated October, but most importantly none of the plates bear numbers in the upper right. Original 3/4 leather binding with moderate shelfwear, spine worn with minor loss to extremities, but intact and attractive. Mottled decorative paper sheets cover the boards, and the pastedowns are marbled. Many of the plates are loose, and several pages are lightly to moderately stained. The engravings are strong and clean impressions, showing views of buildings of ancient and modern construction. Most of the engravings are signed in the plate either "A. Franzetti" or "A. F." Many of the plates are titled and show similar views to many by Piranesi, though they are not identical. If this is a pocket version of Piranesi's "Vedute de Roma" it is either lacking 5 images, or it was issued with 130 images instead of 135. Bibliographic information on this publication is elusive. A very important Australian book, being the only inland exploration work published in quarto, and reputedly only 500 copies produced. John Oxley held a significant place in the early history of the Colony contributing to the exploration of the New England districts of New South Wales, as well as the discovery of the Brisbane River. Oxley’s first journey was made beyond the Blue Mountains, up and around the Lachlan River. Vast swamps compelled him to return when less than two days’ journey from the Murrumbidgee River. In his second journey, made the following year, Oxley led a party down the Marquarie River. He found the land very swampy, the party took a detour and discovered the Castlereagh River. The party then struck N.E. and East across the Warrumbungle Ranges and the Liverpool Plains, crossed the Dividing Range and reached the coast at Port Macquarie. The finely-drawn maps and aquatints include views drawn by Major James Taylor from sketches by Evans, second in command and the deputy surveyor, and the striking portrait "A Native Chief of Bathurst", prepared after a drawing by John Lewin, and one of very few known Aboriginal subjects by Australia's first professional artist. WITH: Loosely inserted are 2 original hand-written letters fully signed “J. Oxley” to his wife Emma, written at Sydney Town to Kirkham, Oxley’s farm at the Cowpastures, dated 26 February (1824). The second letter is not dated but of a similar period. The letters are interesting and refer to W. Marsden and Mr. Cordeaux (Governor Macquarie’s land commissioner).
