WINTER EVENING TALES, COLLECTED AMONG THE COTTAGERS IN THE SOUTH OF SCOTLAND ..

Edinburgh: Printed for Oliver & Boyd, High-Street; and G. & W. B. Whittaker, Ave-Maria-Lane, 1820.. 12mo, two volumes; pp. [1-4] [1] 2-340; [1-4] [1] 2-335 [336: ad], nineteenth-century full calf, spine panels richly tooled in gold, brown leather title pieces, gauffered edges. First edition. "WINTER EVENING TALES (1820; second edition 1821) was James Hogg's most successful work of prose fiction in his lifetime, as well as one of his best. It exhibits the most complex genesis of any of Hogg's works and is the outstanding example of a "national" genre pioneered by Hogg -- the miscellaneous collection of popular and traditional narratives, and the experimental medley of novellas, tales, poems and sketches posed a lively alternative to the dominant form of the historical novel established by Walter Scott. The collection includes terse masterpieces of mystery and the uncanny, virtuoso improvisations on folk tale themes, and -- the highlights of the edition -- two brilliant autobiographical novellas, "The Renowned Adventures of Basil Lee" and "Love Adventures of Mr. George Cochrane." Many of the tales were republished in the posthumous collected set of Hogg's fiction, and these unreliable texts were reprinted throughout the nineteenth century. However, WINTER EVENING TALES fell into almost total obscurity after the middle of the nineteenth century." - quote from the Internet, probably part of the jacket blurb for the 2002 edition published by the Edinburgh University Press. "Excellent material." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 835. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 206. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 263. Bleiler (1978), p. 101. Reginald 07325. Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1820: 34. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Armorial bookplate of John Drummond affixed to each paste-down. Spine ends chipped, spines rubbed, hairline cracks along outer joints but hinges still firm, some scattered tanning and foxing to text blocks, a solid, good copy. (#153341)

Amiens, Caron-Vitet, 1820. Folio. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Some minor scattered foxing. Very good. Manifesto published on the eve of Peruvian independence. San Martin invaded Peru in September of 1820; negotiations between San Martin and Viceroy Pezuela took place shortly thereafter, at Miraflores. Mystery Developed; Or, Russell Colvin, (Supposed to Be Murdered), In Full Life; And Stephen and Jesse Boorn, (His Convicted Murderers,) Rescued From Ignominious Death by Wonderful Discoveries. Containing, I. A Narrative of the Whole Transaction, by Rev. Lemuel Haynes, A.M. II. Rev. Mr. Haynes' Sermon upon the Development of the Mystery. III. A Succinct Account of the Indictment, Trial and Conviction of Stephen and Jesse Boorn. Hartford: Published by William S. Marsh, 1820. 48 pp. Three parts, each with title page, pagination continuous. Second part titled The Sermon, The Prisoner Released, third part, by Waldo, titled A Brief Sketch of the Indictment. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent quarter calf over marbled boards, calf title panel to front board, gilt title to spine. Moderate toning and light foxing to text, minor tears to a few leaves, internally clean. * Only edition. As McDade notes, this is "one of the most famous cases of American criminal law and a constant reminder that innocent persons can be convicted." Colvin disappeared from his Vermont community and Stephen and Jesse Boorn, his brothers-in-law, were convicted of murdering him, even though a body was never found. Told they would be convicted with overwhelming evidence, they were persuaded to confess in exchange for a charge of manslaughter. Sentenced to death instead, the legislature intervened and commuted their sentences to life imprisonment. The Boorns were released when Colvin returned home six years later. Reverend Haynes, perhaps the most prominent African-American in the early nineteenth century, had supported the claims of innocence by the Boorns. The third part of this pamphlet, the Brief Account, was written by Waldo. OCLC locates 3 copies in North American law libraries (Harvard, Yale, US Supreme Court, which has an incomplete copy). The first two parts of this pamphlet were reprinted in Thomas Mather Cooley's Sketches of the Life and Character of the Rev. Lemuel Haynes (1837). McDade, The Annals of Murder 111.         Hamse-i Sani-zade

Istanbul, Tabhane-yi Sahane/Tibaat ül-Amire, 1235 AH 1820 - Folio (208 x 289 mm). 3 parts in 1 volume: 4 pp.,131, 35pp.,with 56 etched plates; 39; 283pp. First edition of the pioneering Ottoman physician Sanizade’s (1771-1826) medical compendium and is the FIRST BOOK ON MEDICINE printed by the Muslims: the first three books of what would later be known as Sani-zade’s Canon of Five, the first book is on Anatomy titled “Kitâb ül-evvel fi t-tesrihât”, The second book on Physiology also discusses the circulatory system titled “Kitab üs-sânı fi ‘t-tabıyat”, and the third book on Internal Medicine titled “Kitâb üs-sâlis Miyâr ül-etibbâ”. This was one of the earliest Turkish medical works to draw thoroughly on western, Paracelsian science: indeed, it is modelled on and partly translated from Italian and German sources, such as Anton Störck, Bartolomeo Eustachi, Gabriele Fallopio, and Costanzo Varolio, reproducing anatomical illustrations from a variety of sources including Vesalius. Sanizade was a brilliant and innovative physician and theorist who did much to integrate new medical knowledge with the old. His views on medicine encountered much opposition, mainly because of his support for surgery-based study of anatomy. A good copy of this rare work, the only edition published during the author’s lifetime. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A.L.s. to Mr. Cumberland.

      - No place (but London?): no date (ca. 1820?). 2 pp., small 4to, written in brown ink on one side and addressed on the other with a watercolor drawing by Cruikshank. A tantalizing letter: addressed only to "Mr. Cumberland," it is tempting to hope it might be George Cumberland, especially because the letter mentions a "Mr. B," who one would like to think might be Blake but is probably Bewick. The letter reads (in part): "If convenient please to send me the dust . . . have you any command please to write a few lines . . . will you request Mr. B to send me some word I have sent to him but have only one block back." Boldly signed "R Ck." On the verso is written "Mr. Cumberland" beside a charming watercolor of an exceptionally portly gentleman in a hat and an exceptionally skinny figure doffing his hat (perhaps the artist importuning his patron?). A search of Blake Records failed to locate a single reference to Robert Cruikshank but, of course, hundreds to Cumberland. A more likely possibility is John Cumberland, the publisher whose Cumberland's Minor Theatre was illustrated by Cruikshank. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Dimensioni 145x190 circa In the XIX century, Michela De Vito became quite a famous artist. She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. "A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subejct more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe this artist. This gentleness is quite evident in her figures and in their clothes. Watercolour on paper, signed on lower right. High qualità works, in excellent condition, surrounded by a modern golden frame. Size 145x190. Dimensioni [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Portfino 4 leagues from Genoa west

Taken from the travel notebook of an English admiral, William Paget, who called them "Sketches in the South of France, Coast of Italy, Rome, Elba and Lombardy, Lake of Como and Maggiore in the years 1819-20-21" as can be seen from his own handwriting. These works present views of the Liguria region, parts of Tuscany (especially the island of Elba), and a large number dedicated to the lakes of Lombardy. The artistic quality is not the same for all of these water-colours and their author is more interested in the natural scenery than in representing people. It can be seen that they were created by an amateur painter and their greatest interest lies in their iconographical an decorative values. From the point of view of artistic techiniques these works were created by first making a preliminary drawing with a pencil, usually on thick laid paper (typically used in early nineteenth-century England), and then painting it with water-colours. Since these works come in different sizes, the notebooks originally might have been more than one. Dimensioni 290 105mm

Journal of a Tour in the Levant

London: John Murray,, 1820. 3 volumes, octavo. Original buff paper-covered boards, printed paper labels to spines. Housed in a black cloth flat back solander box. 22 plates, 6 of them hand-coloured, 5 of these being aquatints, of which 2 are folding panoramas – Zante and Smyrna – and one being a double-sided facsimile, 2 folding maps, illustrations to the text. All half-titles present. Slightly rubbed, some minor chips at the heads and tails of the spines, spines mildly creased, upper joint of volume III starting, two leaves in volume I badly opened with slight marginal loss, and a few others leaves with minor splits, but overall an exceptional set. First and only edition of what Atabey describes as "this important work" and Blackmer a "very interesting work." Turner's "chatty" account includes observations on local manners and customs; an account of a meeting and conversation with Ali Pasha; and lengthy descriptions of two visits to Cyprus. Decidedly uncommon, exceedingly so in boards. Turner's father was a friend of George Canning, to whom this book is dedicated, who obtained a clerkship in the Foreign Office for William in 1809. In 1811 he was attached to the embassy of Robert Liston and accompanied him to Constantinople. Turner "remained in the East for five years, and during that time visited most parts of the Ottoman empire, as well as the islands and mainland of Greece. While in Asia Minor he endeavoured to emulate Leander and Lord Byron by swimming the Hellespont, and, failing in the attempt, palliated his ill success by pointing out that he had tried to swim from Asia to Europe, a far more difficult feat than Byron's passage from Europe to Asia" (ODNB). Byron responded in a letter to John Murray, and Turner "in a counter-rejoinder, overwhelmed his adversary with quotations from ancient and modern topographers." In 1824 he returned to Constantinople as secretary to the British embassy, and for 18 months during Stratford Canning's absence was minister-plenipotentiary. In 1829 he was appointed envoy-extraordinary and minister-plenipotentiary to Colombia, a post from which he retired from the service after nine years. He died in 1867.

Lima: Casa de Ninos Expositos, 1820. 8,[25]pp. Folio. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Some minor scattered foxing. Very good. Manifesto published on the eve of Peruvian independence.

All a Bottle of Smoke!! Or John Bull and the Secret Committee.

1820. A Bottle of Smoke!! [Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821)]. [Pains and Penalties Bill]. All a Bottle of Smoke!! Or John Bull and the Secret Committee. [London]: Published by John Fairburn, July 1820. 11" x 17" hand-colored lithograph. A few chips, minor tears and light soiling to margins, colors vivid. A well-preserved copy. * The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational trials in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage, Caroline was eventually banished to a private residence after the birth of her daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1814 Caroline moved to Europe. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer, the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of the title of Queen Consort and dissolve her marriage. (The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Bergami, while in Italy.) The bill was approved by the House of Lords, but it was not submitted to the House of Commons, where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts, Caroline remained a popular favorite. Indeed, her popularity increased during the trial. Although she prevailed, she fell ill and died shortly after the coronation of George IV. She was certain that she was poisoned by one of the King's agents. The trial inspired numerous books, pamphlets and ephemera, such as this anonymous print. One of many publications that supported Caroline's cause, it dismisses the Bill as both as groundless and a perversion of the legal system. John Bull pulls a "bottle of smoke" out of the seat of justice, the Green Bag, while a serpent representing George IV slithers out of a hole in its side. Several members of the House of Lords with padlocked mouths stand in the background.
