Suite du mémoire sur les intégrales définies.

Paris: l'Imprimerie Royal, 1820. An important contribution to the foundation of complex function theory. In this paper Possion was the first to carry out integration along a path in the complex plane. "Poisson noted in 1815 and discussed in [this paper] the use of integrals of complex functions taken over paths in the complex plane. As an example he gives ?dx/x from -1 to 1. Here he sets x=ei?, where ? runs from (2n+1)? to 0, and obtaines, by treating the integral as a limit of a sum, the value -(2n+1)?i. Then he notes that the value of an integral need not be the same when taken over an imaginary path as when over a real path. He gives the example ?(cos ax)/(b2+ x2) dx from -? to ?, where a and b are positive constants. He lets x = t ik, where k is constant and positive, and obtaines the value & Five memoires in: Journal de l'École Royale Polytechnique, vol. 11. pp. 1-188; 295-341; 342-410; 411-416; 417-489.          Autograph Letter Signed to Frances LADY SHELLEY, (Arthur Wellesley, Duke of, 1769-1852, Field Marshal & Statesman)

1820 - (née Winckley, 1787-1873, wife, 1807, of Sir John Shelley, 1772-1852, M.P., 6th Baronet of Maresfield, Sussex), saying he was "just going to write to congratulate you upon Shelley's success at Newmarket when I received your note", and concludes that "Frederick", (her second son, 1809-1869, from 1867 8th Baronet), "will now have a Private Tutor", the Duke has "spoken to Coleman respecting Dr Parkestone's Dogs & he says they are very good", but asked the Duke to see them first, "I shall be most obliged [to] you if you will desire that they may be sent to Stratfield Saye. Let me know to whom I shall give the Money for them", the Duke continues "The Radicals at Glasgow appear to think they have had enough of Rebellion. I trust that the mutineers taken will be hanged. The Tyrant", apparently the Duke's wife Kitty, "is still out of town but I believe she comes this day", he will be "very happy to see you when you come to town. My house", Apsley House, which he bought from his brother Richard in 1817, "is nearly finished", with a P.S., "Our friend the Pheasant seller has I am afraid played me a trick in sending me Pheasants caught in a Wood instead of those bred in a Mews! I ought to have fifty Ladies Foley now laying Eggs. But there was not one Egg when I came to town the day before yesterday", 3 sides 8vo black edged, 12th April four closed tears at ends of horizontal folds without loss to text (Transcription) London, April 12th 1820 My dear Lady Shelley I was just going to write to congratulate you upon Shelley's success at Newmarket when I received your note. I conclude that Frederick will now have a Private Tutor. I have spoken to Coleman respecting Dr Parkestone's Dogs & he says they are very good; but he asked me to see them before I chose to take them. This is impossible at present; & therefore I shall be most obliged [to] you if you will desire that they may be [Side 2] sent to Stratfield Saye. Let me know to whom I shall give the Money for them. The Radicals at Glasgow appear to think they have had enough of Rebellion. I trust that the mutineers taken will be hanged. The Tyrant is still out of town but I believe she comes this day. I shall be very happy to see you when you come to town. My house is nearly finished. Believe me Ever Your's most sincerely Wellington [Side 3] Our friend the Pheasant seller has I am afraid played me a trick in sending me Pheasants caught in a Wood instead of those bred in a Mews! I ought to have fifty Ladies Foley now laying Eggs. But there was not one Egg when I came to town the day before yesterday. Lady Shelley, being a famous horsewoman, was allowed by the Duke to ride his favourite charger, Copenhagen. At a great review in Paris in 1815, mounted on Copenhagen, Lady Shelley accompanied the Duke along 10 miles of Infantry and, to commemorate the event, cut off a small bit of Copenhagen's tail. The Duke pretended to be angry and demanded its return. A week later Lady Shelley received a bracelet made of Copenhagen's hair with the Duke's own hair in the clasp Sir John had joined the Coldstream Guards in 1790 and briefly saw service abroad in Flanders and Valenciennes, 1793-1794. He was a noted breeder of horses, winning the Derby three times. Provenance: via Eva Louisa, (d. 1949, aged 88), wife, 1883, of Colonel the Hon. John Schomberg Trefusis, (1852-1932), a great-granddaughter of Lady Shelley.

Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière des Mollusques Terrestres et Fluviatiles ...

Paris, J.B. Baillière, 1820-1851. 4 volumes. Folio. With 247 engraved plates, almost all printed in colours and finished by hand. Recent red half morocco, spines with 4 raised bands, gilt ornaments and lettering. Large Paper copy of one of the rarest and most beautiful conchological works. Some moderate foxing to text as well as plates. "Posterity is grateful to Férussac for some of the most beautiful and accurate coloured figures of non-marine molluscs ever published" (Dance p. 91). It is also the last and one of the finest examples of French colour-printing by Langlois, the printer responsible for some of Redouté's finest work./The work had a long and complicated publishing history with the result that few copies are found complete. The first 28 parts, by Férussac, appeared between 1820 and 1832, containing 162 plates and 128 pages of text. In 1838 another six instalments were issued by Deshayes. The death of the publisher and departure of Deshayes to Algeria again brought the work to a halt. In 1848 Baillière acquired the stock and plates and convinced Deshayes that a work of such beauty and scientific importance could not remain unfinished. Eight more instalments were published. Deshayes is responsible for the greatest part of the text and 85 plates./The colour-printing and handcolouring were executed under supervision of Langlois and after his death by his pupil and successor, Geny-Gros, the plates were drawn by the finest natural history artists in France at the time: Bessa, Huet, Prêtre, and Riocreux. Baillière in his "Avertissement de l'éditeur' tells how as a consequence of the 1848 Revolution the most outstanding natural history artists could not find employment, apart from his work.//B.M.(N.H.)          Système analytique des connaissances positives de l'homme: restreintes à celles qui proviennent directement ou indirectement de l'observation.

Paris: L'auteur & A. Belin, February 1820. First edition, very rare, of Lamarck's last book, important for containing his final thoughts on evolution. In this work Lamarck renounces the linear progression theory of species change propounded in his Philosophie Zoologique (1809) in favour of a branching tree theory much closer to that associated with Darwin some four decades later. "Unwilling to endorse the idea that fossils represented species that had all become extinct as the result of a global catastrophe, he concluded that the forms had changed over time. Having once concluded that species are mutable, he then called upon the familiar idea of the inheritance of acquired characters to explain the close relation between habits and forms that, especially in the case of birds, had been a staple of naturalists' commentaries for decades ... He invoked what he called the "power of life" or "the cause which tends to make organization increasingly complex" to account for the general, linear series that in his view best represented how the different animal classes were related to each other ... [Stephen Jay] Gould describes how Lamarck's decision to make separate classes of the annelid and parasitic worms led him over time to give up his original commitment to a linear arrangement of the different animal classes and to adopt a truly branching scheme instead. Gould indicates that in the very last of his publications [the offered work] Lamarck reversed his decades-long belief that the "power of life" was greater than the influence of environmental circumstances, admitting to the contrary that the force of circumstances was ultimately stronger than nature herself ... Giving up his linear arrangement of living things for a strongly branching view of life's development, and acknowledging that the influence of the environment had had a greater role in evolution than the "cause which makes organization increasingly complex," Lamarck showed his willingness to let the evidence of natural history be the final arbiter in determining the complex path nature had traced, over time, in bringing all the different forms of life into existence" (Burkhardt in DSB). KVK lists only nine copies (three each in France, Germany and UK). "Following his last and greatest treatise on the anatomy of invertebrate organisms, Lamarck published only one other major work

[Souimanga de Kuhl, mâle & femelle & Souimanga à ventre écarlate, mâle (= plate 376/388 from Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux ... )]. [France], 1825. Watercolour of 3 birds on unwatermarked wove paper (ca. 48 x 35 cm), all standing on a branch, the upper branch signed: "JG Prêtre 1825". With the birds numbered in pencil, the plate number and bird names in pencil in the lower left corner, and the upper bird encircled and with added correct plate number.

For the published work see: Anker 502; Balis, Van diverse pluimage 75; Nissen, IVB 932; Zimmer, pp. 626-628. Original watercolour of a male and female White-flanked Sunbird (Aethopyga eximia) and a male Splendid Sunbird (Cinnyris coccinigastrus) by the prolific zoological artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre, produced for Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... (Paris, 1820-1839). On the final published plate 376, the Splendid Sunbird was changed with a Purple-throated Sunbird and the Splendid Sunbird appeared on plate 388. Sunbirds make up a family of very small passerine birds. The White-flanked Sunbird is found in Indonesia and the Splendid Sunbird in West and central Africa. Temminck's lavishly illustrated Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... issued in 102 parts between 1820-1839, was published as a kind of continuation to Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux (1770-1786). In total it contains ca. 600 engraved plates with about 800 figures of birds by Nicolas Huet and Prêtre, and it's considered "the most monumental work of the post-Napoleonic period" (Balis).Paper slightly browned, a few minor spots and some working notes in pencil. A beautiful watercolour of three sunbirds.

Symzonia: Voyageof Discovery (1st and only edition)

      J. Seymour 1820 - Huge Historical Significance! Symzonia: A Voyage of Discovery” by Captain Adam Seaborn (pseudonym for John Cleves Symmes). First and only edition! Note name “Symzonia derived from “Symmes”). One of the now extremely rare books advertised for weeks on end in 1822 in Joseph Smith’s hometown of Palmyra was “Symzonia: or a voyage to the Internal World” by Capt. Adam Seaborn. Symzonia was a fictional account of a voyage to the South Pole, and the “Internal World” was a reference to the hollow earth theory. In an age with no radios or TVs, Joseph Smith’s family took the newspaper (the Palmyra Reflector). In 1823, the father is listed in that paper as a delinquent subscriber. Joseph Smith, a religious fundamentalist and well-known as treasure hunter, who used a magic stone to see into the earth, was seventeen at the time. Four years earlier in 1818 in St. Lewis, Captain Symmes had issued his famous circular: “To all the World: I declare the earth is hollow and habitable within.” This circular was sent to every learned society in the United States and Europe, every main town, and various distinguished individuals. By the time, Joseph Smith was eighteen, Symmes, who later settled in Ohio, had convinced 25 Congressmen to fund an expedition to enter the center of the earth though a 4,000 mile wide opening in the warm North Pole. In the 1830s, Edgar Allen Poe put this idea into one of his stories, “Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.” The “Lost Tribes of Israel,” it was believed, lived behind a wall of ice that surrounded the North Pole. Joseph Smith, a reader but relatively uneducated man of twenty-three when he composed the Book of Mormon, accepted this geographical ignorance of his day. The warm North Pole idea wound up in the Book of Mormon (1830). In the chapter called Ether (13:11), it says that “they who were scattered” will be “gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the north countries.” “And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord.and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence.” Later in 1831 and again in 1836, this north-country prophecy was repeated in the Mormon Doctrine and Covenants 133:26 and 110:11. In an prophesy dated April, 3, 1836 (Doctrine and Covenants 133:26), Joseph Smith spoke of the “leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north. And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep.” Note the use of “highway” below: The theory was best stated in the “Latter Day Saints’ Messenger and Advocate” (October, 1835). There “may be a continent at the north pole, of more than 1300 square miles, containing thousands of millions (that’s billions!) of Israelites, who, after a high way is cast up in the great deep, may come to Zion, signing songs of everlasting joy .The idea is greatly strengthened by reading Zenos’ account of the tame olive tree in the Book of Mormon .The branches planted in the nethermost parts of the earth .” All this makes sense when it is noted that the South Pole was not discovered until 1820 (US Navy Capt Nathaniel B. Palmer when Joseph Smith was fifteen), and one of the motivations for America’s interest in the South Pole was to find a hole into the center of the earth. The hollow-earth theory was still credible enough that as late as 1864, Jules Verne could write “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” Thus, “Symzonia: or a voyage to the Internal World” is a novel of unrecognized and huge historical importance in the rise of Mormonism because it proves that Joseph used the ideas of his day, not revelation. This extremely rare book in hardcover (one edition only!): From the "Marrill Memorial Library" gifted in May 1939. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Two volumes, complete. 573 pp.; 595 pp Quarto later full brown calf, burgundy gilt lettered spine labels Cotton Mather, FRS (February 12, 1663 - February 13, 1728; A.B. 1678, Harvard College; A.M. 1681, honorary doctorate 1710, University of Glasgow) was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. Known for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials, he also left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention. He was subsequently denied the Presidency of Harvard College which his father, Increase, had held. Mather wrote more than 450 books and pamphlets, and his ubiquitous literary works made him one of the most influential religious leaders in America. Mather set the moral tone in the colonies, and sounded the call for second- and third-generation Puritans, whose parents had left England for the New England colonies of North America, to return to the theological roots of Puritanism. The most important of these, Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), comprises seven distinct books, many of which depict biographical and historical narratives. From his religious training, Mather viewed the importance of texts for elaborating meaning and for bridging different moments of history--linking, for instance, the Biblical stories of Noah and Abraham with the arrival of such eminent leaders as John Eliot, John Winthrop, and his own father, Increase. Highly influential, Mather was a force to be reckoned with in secular, as well as in spiritual, matters. After the fall of James II of England, in 1688, Mather was among the leaders of the successful revolt against James' governor of the consolidated Dominion of New England, Sir Edmund Andros. Mather was not known for writing in a neutral, unbiased perspective. Many, if not all, of his writings had bits and pieces of his own personal life in them or were written for personal reasons. In 1689, Mather published Memorable Providences, detailing the supposed afflictions of several children in the Goodwin family in Boston. Catholic washerwoman Goody Glover was convicted of witchcraft and executed in this case. Robert Calef, a contemporary critic of Mather, considered this book responsible for laying the groundwork for the Salem witch trials three years later: Mr Cotton Mather, was the most active and forward of any Minister in the Country in those matters, taking home one of the Children, and managing such Intreagues with that Child, and after printing such an account of the whole, in his Memorable Providences, as conduced much to the kindling of those Flames, that in Sir Williams time threatened the devouring of this Country. Nineteenth-century historian Charles Wentworth Upham shared the view that the afflicted in Salem were imitating the Goodwin children, but put the blame on both Cotton and his father, Increase Mather: They are answerable... more than almost any other men have been, for the opinions of their time. It was, indeed a superstitious age; but made much more so by their operations, influence, and writings, beginning with Increase Mather's movement, at the assembly of Ministers, in 1681, and ending with Cotton Mather's dealings with the Goodwin children, and the account thereof which he printed and circulated far and wide. For this reason, then in the first place, I hold those two men responsible for what is called 'Salem Witchcraft.' -wikipedia Some rubbing and scuffing of covers, browning and some foxing throughout, top of title page excised, albeit a nice copy The books were owned by Rev. Herman Landon Vail (1790-1870), each volume signed by him [Sabin 46393. Howes M391 "Most famous 18th century American book."]

Lamennais].

Coptographische Groepon

Wed. G. A. Diederichs en Zoon and Mindermann, Amsterdam 1820 - Four paper packets with thirty-six paper figures. The figures are cut from laid paper so that a lantern shining through the cut-out portions would project the image onto a wall or sheet. The largest packet, containing six sheets, was professionally produced and contains intricate, multi-figure images of chess players, musicians, a school master with his pupils, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, dames at a tea table, and a noble family. The other three packets, containing twelve, twelve, and six figures respectively, look to have been homemade supplements to the original set. These additional figures are very finely done and include a variety of historic figures, such as Queen Elizabeth I, the prophet Muhammad, Diogenes, Homer, Minerva, the Apostles Paul and Peter, and King Francis I of France. The set also includes a few generic figures from different professions and ethnicities. Each is carefully numbered and labeled, and a handwritten list is included in each packet. Shadow theater, which has a long tradition in the East, did not gain popularity in Europe until the eighteenth century. This set of cut paper silhouettes is an extremely rare early example of this form of European entertainment. A very interesting and unique set, complete and in fine condition.

         Technical drawing of Whaling equipment.

France: circa, 1820. Original drawing in ink on paper, 220 x 290 mm., ms. notations in ink and pencil; in fine condition, mounted. A finely-executed nineteenth-century technical drawing showing the tryworks and various implements involved in on-board whale processing. This drawing, with its various manuscript corrections, may have been a preliminary work for a French publication on whaling. It is drawn with the usual competence and finesse associated with French maritime art of this period. The upper section of the drawing shows different types of harpoon, lance, forks, ladles and strainers, and a sail-buoy used to mark whale carcasses. The lower section of the drawing shows the "tryworks" - the on-board furnace used for rendering whale blubber into oil. The tryworks was the most distinguishing feature of a whaleship, and consisted of two cast-iron trypots set into a brick furnace. At the time when this drawing was made, French whaling activity was mainly concentrated in the Pacific, where a formidable fleet operated even before any French colonies were established in the area. In fine condition.

Good copy, collated complete. ----Dibner 62; Sparrow 8; Norman 43; DSB I, p.143; Wheeler Gift 762. - Like Oersted, Ampere was a devoted follower of Kant who constructed his own Kantian philosophical system. Ampere's philosophy postulated "two levels of knowledge of the external world ... phenomena, presented to us directly through the senses, and noumena, the objective causes of phenomena" (DSB); this determined the form of his scientific discoveries, of which the most important were his discoveries in electrodynamics, beginning in the fall of 1820. Fascinated by Oersted's demonstration of the existence of electromagnetism, which had been reported by Francois Arago to an astonished Academie des Sciences on September 4, 1820, Ampere immediately set out to determine through his own experiments the exact relationship of electrical current-flow and magnetism. He read his first report to the Academie des Sciences on September 18, 1820. In the present paper, his "first great memoir on electrodynamics" (DSB), probably written soon after November 6, the latest session of the Academic that is mentioned, Ampere describes the series of "classical and simple" experiments with which he first explored the interaction of two electric currents and of electric currents with magnets as well as with the earth's magnetic field. "He demonstrated for the first time that two parallel conductors, carrying currents traveling in the same direction, attract each other; conversely, if the currents are traveling in opposite directions, they repel each other" (Sparrow, Milestones of Science, p. 33). His experiments provided empirical evidence for his new theory of magnetism as "electricity in motion." (DSB). Very Good.
