A presentation copy from Daniel Moore to Judge John B. Gibson. Washington's opinion regards an important early American case concerning a conscientious objector who refused to fight during the War of 1812. "In August 1814 Houston was ordered to march to Yorktown, Pennsylvania, for militia duty. He did not march or secure a substitute. He was declared guilty and fined. Daniel Moore was court appointed to collect the fine. Moore seized two pieces of broadcloth from Houston's store in payment. In a jurisdictional dispute, Houston brought the case against his court-martial and won the case" (Grodzinski). Washington, a long-serving associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, was a nephew of George Washington. All accounts of this trial are scarce. OCLC locates 6 copies of Washington's Opinion, 4 in North America (American Antiquarian Society, Lancaster County Historical Society, Millersville University Library, University of Virginia). First English Edition, later issue, with all plates numbered, on J. Whatman Turkey Mill paper watermarked 1839. Schuetz) and folding map hand-colored in outline, engraved by Bartlett. The best, perhaps, is the view of Thurnberg, where the square turreted castle standing high above the Rhine lends its own dignity to the drawing." N. B. Kommentarbd.: OHLdr., Faksimile tadellos. Kommentarbd.: Min Vergriffen. Nr. 816 von 930 arab. num. Exemplaren.

chez Antoine Richard 1820-21, Marseilles - 3 vols. pages; Three volumes bound in contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards with tiny vellum tips reinforcing the corners, flat spines -- each volume has a pair of green leather labels lettered in gilt. These three volumes once belonged to Dr. Arpad Plesch, with the great collector's impressive red leather book-label tooled and lettered in gilt mounted to the front paste-down of the first volume. The spine of the first volume has a small piece missing along the top edge and has recieved a minor repair, there is a surface scrape along the spine of the third volume, which is not particularly noticeable, and there is moderate worming to the blank margins (only) of 57 leaves towards the end of the volume. In general, this copy is handsome and sound. While these volumes would be of considerable interest as a representation of the state of agriculture in the south of France in 1820, the material at the heart of the third volume represents an important and early treatise on all aspects of the variety and cultivation of grapes, and winemaking. The text goes into significant detail -- how to build, support and work vineyards, the varieties of grapes and their suitability to the terrain and climate, diseases and problems ith grapes, wine bottles, corks, basements, cellars, tanks, vinegars, distillation and fortification, etc. Little is known about the author, J.-S. Lardier, but at least one reference relates that he was born in 1753 and that he was Provençal. Lardier's "Essai," while a classic work of French agriculture (and viticulture), is both rare and unusual in its form -- to the extent that various sources cannot agree, even, on just what constitutes a set. The Bibliothèque Nationale copy seems to have only the first two volumes [but as it does not specify pagination details, their catalogue description makes it impossible to say just what they have, or do not have]. Quérard, 4:557 (compiled just a decade after this publication appeared) cites only two volumes ("5 livraisons en 2 volumes"), and gets the dates a bit mixed up. Oddly, the title page to Vol. 2, has an imprint dated "1821;" vols. 1 and 3, title pages have the date: "1820." Some of the confusion seems to result from the evidence that this publication was issued in parts -- [called here "livraisons"]. Our copy has ten livraisons. The first leaf of each of the octavo gatherings, marked with a number at the foot of the page, also has the specification of the particular livraison number. At the end of our volume III, at the foot of the final paragraph of the text appears this note: "Fin de la dixième livraison." But it should be noted that we found only one record of an institution holding individual livraisons or issues of the parts of Lardier's "Essai" -- [Médiathèque Draguignan has 3 parts, broché] . Not many of the examples bound into volumes have survived, either. COPAC locates just a single example: [Senate House Libraries, University of London, apparently just volume I]. OCLC appears to have 8 different accession numbers, but this is highly misleading as 5 of the 8 describe only libraries reporting a modern microform facsimile reprint, which appears to have included volume I only: [Goldsmiths' Library, University of London./ Goldsmiths'-Kress no. 22806./ Electronic reproduction./ Farmington Hills, Mich. :/ Thomson Gale]. OCLC does locate five sets printed in the early 1820's on paper. (Northwestern University; Indiana University, Bloomington; Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris; Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon; and the aforementioned Bibliothèque Nationale set (2 vols. only). To confuse matters further, it appears that two sets recorded have four volumes -- [Northwestern University, and Bibliothèque Universitaire de Pharmacie. Both have the date "1821" on that fourth title page. Another set in four volumes appears to have been sold at auction in Paris at Alde, June, 2014]. Volume IV, missing in nearly all sets, including ours, was devoted [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Nog even.Prijs: ?2.250,- (incl. lijst).

Octavo, contemporary full straight-grain olive morocco gilt rebacked in brown morocco, marbled endpapers and edges. $1500.Later edition, with two facsimile documents in Volume I.“Everyone with an interest in Johnson is very much in debt to Boswell not only for the years of devotion he invested in the study of JohnsonÂ’s life, but for the uncanny skill with which he conveyed the quality of JohnsonÂ’s personality and his effect on the people about him. If there had been no Boswell, Johnson would have been one of the most famous names in English literature; but that he has become a household name, known to millions who will never read a line of his writing, is due to the chance that brought Boswell into his company” (Wain, 229).         Ivanhoe; A Romance. By the author of "Waverley," &c.

Printed for Archibald Constable and Co. Edinburgh; and Hurst, Robinson, and Co. 90, Cheapside, London., Edinburgh / London 1820 - Second Edition of "one of the most remarkable novels of the nineteenth century" (ODNB), with all press figures and two typographical errors (p. 89 of vol. II misnumbered 98; first press figure numeral on p. 132, vol. III, in wrong font and printed upside down) conforming to those specified by Todd & Bowden. Complete in three octavo volumes. [4],xxxiii,[1],306; [2],327,[1]; [2]371,[1]pp, including fly-titles but without half-titles and advertisements in vol. III. Beautifully bound in early black straight-grain morocco, covers elaborated framed in gilt and blind, flat spines richly gilt in six compartments (title and volume numbers stamped in gilt to second and fifth), all edges gilt, marbled end papers. A superb set, the handsome bindings tight and square; light, intermittent foxing (heavier to end papers), but generally clean and bright. Todd and Bowden 140Ad. Grolier English 100, 71. For nineteenth century readers, Ivanhoe was perhaps the most celebrated of Scott's novels (according to Leslie Stephen, it was "Scott's culminating success in a book-selling sense, and marked the highest point both of his literary and social prosperity."). Before Ivanhoe, Scott's plots were drawn from Scottish history, but Ivanhoe launched a major change, based on English history and set earlier than any novel Scott had yet written, at the time of the Crusades. First released 20 December 1819, but with 1820 on the title page, the first-issue printing of 6000 copies was increased to 10,000 for this second edition, issued sometime after 15 January 1820 (first edition, third issue) and before 2 March 1820, when Catharina Crawley (possibly Catharina Crawley Boevey, who married Samuel James Ballard on 21 November 1822, in Flaxley, Gloucestershire) singed and dated the title page of our vol. I. "Ivanhoe is essentially a moral work. It is an intense consideration of misogyny and racial oppression, in which the attempted rape of Rebecca the Jewess by the dominant figure of the Norman master race, Brian de Bois-Guilbert, is a powerful symbol of the themes of the novel. Ivanhoe may be set in a distant period, but it has a political modernity . . ."
