Original 19th Century Watercolor of French Tradesman: Marchand de Paniers

British Isles : c. 1820. Fine condition A scarce and charming original early nineteenth century watercolor painting on wove paper. (7 x 7.25 inches, 177 x 186 mm.) The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period, as was the custom, yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown, a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist, likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes, complete with engraved plates, of the trades, and costumes of then exotic regions of the globe, thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in double Ivory French matting with 1" neo-classical gilt moulding, glazed with Conservation Glass. Sized to 17 1/2 x 20 inches.

Lind, Jenny (1820-1887). Autograph note, 19 January 1849

Lind, Jenny (1820-1887). Autograph note, 19 January 1849. 1 leaf, 8vo. (11.3 x 18cm). Folded, in brown ink. In excellent condition. To an unidentified recipient. Concerning the end of her operatic career [translation]: “Ms Lind regrets very much that further commitments for the next year cannot be accepted.” “Fräulein Lind bedauert sehr daß sie keine weitere Engagements für die nächste Zeit annehmen kann.” At 28, Lind was at the height of her career, having made her triumphal début in Vienna, in 1846, and, the following year, in London, in the presence of Queen Victoria. Having decided to give up theatrical roles, she sang in Sweden during the winter of 1847, making her last Stockholm appearance as Norma in April 1848. She then sang for a second season at Her Majesty’s, followed by an extensive tour of Great Britain. In December she sang Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Exeter Hall, London. Persuaded to give six extra farewell performances at Her Majesty’s, she made her final stage appearance there as Alice on 10 May 1849. In 1850 she embarked on an eight-month concert tour throughout the USA, visiting 93 cities. She continued to sing in concerts and oratorios, both in Germany and in England, where she lived from 1858 until her death. In 1883, the year of her last public performance, she became professor of singing at the RCM.

Set of Four Shooting Prints, [Plate 1] Shooting, Going Out, [Plate 2] Shooting, Game Found, [Plate 3] Shooting, Dogs brought the Game, and reloading, [Plate 4] Shooting, Refreshing

circa 1820. Colour printed aquatints heightened with gum arabic. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on the bottom margin. Four puncture holes on left margin where it was bound together. Plate 1, has some very minor foxing in margins. Image size: 9 ¾ x 12 5/8 inches. 12 5/8 x 15 3/4 inches. A handsome set of four shooting prints aquatinted by S. Himley after paintings by the celebrated sporting artist Dean Wolstenholme. Around 1820, S. Himley produced two sets of hunting aquatints after skilled paintings by Wolstenholme. These sets, expertly engraved in aquatint, were comprised of four plates illustrating shooting, and four plates depicting coursing. As with many of the prints after Wolstenholme's paintings it is difficult to decipher whether Himley's works reproduced paintings by Dean Wolstenhome Snr. or by his son Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. The Wolstenholme's were both talented sporting artists who earned a reputation as skilled animal painters. Both father and son exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and garnered countless commissions from eager enthusiasts. They specialized in fine hunting scenes and had a natural flare for depicting movement, which lends their work an animation and life, which is truly compelling. This stunning set of four shooting prints is rarely found as a complete set and is a wonderful example of English sporting art at its best. Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints 286-313, 364

Original 19th Century Watercolor of Chinese Tradesman: Chinese Vegetable Boy

British Isles: c. A young boy balances two hanging trays filled with with leafy vegetables. His vibrant costume mirrors the verdant stock of his offering. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist, likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes, complete with engraved plates, of the trades, and costumes of the then exotic regions of the globe. The trades and costumes of China were well documented by the turn of the nineteenth century, thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in double Ivory French matting with 1" neo-classical gilt moulding, glazed with Conservation Glass. Sized to 17 1/2 x 20 inches.

A View of the Cove and Part of Sydney. New South Wales. Taken from Dawes Battery

      R. Ackermann London:: R. Ackermann,. 1820.. Very good condition. This large print is the most important of the twelve views drawn to accompany his book "An Historical Account of New South Wales and Its Dependent Settlements; In Illustration of Twelve Views, Engraved by W. Preston, a Convict; from Drawings taken on the Spot, by Captain Wallis of the Forth-Sixth Regiment...", published in London by Ackerman in 1821. Although Wallis claimed the drawings as his own on the title page, the purchase of the original sketch album by the Mitchell Library in 2011 shows conclusively that the drawings were by the convict artist Joseph Lycett . The engraver Preston was also transported to Australia. The folklore surrounding this important work indicates that he engraved the views on the sheet-copper from the hulls of ships, as none other was available in New South Wales at the time. Wallis arrived with the 46th regiment, on the same ship which brought Joseph Lycett as a convict. Both Preston and Lycett were prisoners under Wallis in Newcastle where Wallis ran the penal settlement between 1816 and 1818. Lycett was to receive fame, and a pardon, for his famous work "Views of Australia". Engraved by W. Preston from an Original Drawing by Capt. Wallis 46th Regt. London Pubd. Septr. 1, 1820, at R. Ackermann's, 10 Strand. Copper engraving with later hand-color, image 56x 38 cms, with generous margins. "Wallis's book has a most important position in a collection of Australian plate books. It is the first book of general landscape views of early New South Wales, representing the first great celebration of the progress of the colony made under the civilising rule of Governor Macquarie and, indeed, of Wallis himself. It is also the first plate book, properly so called, to consist entirely of plates engraved in the colony by a colonial engraver". (Wantrup) Ferguson 842; Wantrup 217a.

        Il carnevale di Roma.

[Rome] [1820] 15 (of 20) etchings. Plate marks 20,5 x 47- 48 cm. The whole sheets 40,5 x 56 cm. Very large margins. Some minor creases, tears and dog´s ears. Very nice condition.. Here we have fifteen etchings to the great work "Il Carnevale di Roma" executed by the swedish artist Count Hjalmar Mörner. This is probably the high point of Mörners production. The images can be mounted to form a long frieze, but it is also devided into sections. The first two etchings are free standing, showing the early stages of the Carnival at Piazza del Popolo, then we have the Carnival in full swing. After that follows the Carnival along Corson. Then we have the horse race and the candle party. The serie ends with one scene from the Aliberti theater (missing here) and one from an osteria. As mentioned the sequence is interupted since five plates are missing (number 7,8, 12, 17 and 19). The plates were printed by Francesco Burlié. Mörner lived for several years in Rome

Spines faded, corners lightly worn, a few light scuffs. A little light foxing. A very good set. With the bookplates of William Taylor Copeland (1797-1868), for a time head of the Spode pottery firm and lord mayor of London.         Die Staatslehre, oder über das Verhältnis des Urstaates zum Vernunftreiche in Vorträgen, gehalten im Sommer 1813 auf der Universität zu Berlin. (Aus seiner Nachlasse herausgegeben).

Bln., G. Reimer, 1820. 8vo. Nice cont. hcalf, professionally later rebacked w. a new richly gilt back over the old one, very clean and fine copy. XVI, 336 pp.. First edition of Fichte's important final lectures on the state, held the year before his death (1814). One of the rarest of Fichte's works, probably published by his son I.H. Fichte. Also with the two "Beilage": "J.G. Fichte's Rede an seine Zuhörer, Abbrechung der Vorlesungen über Wissenschafslehre am 19. Februar 1813" and "Ueber die einzig mögliche Störung der akademischen Freiheit"."Fichte had always had a lively interest in pedagogical issues and assumed a leading role in planning the new Prussian university to be established in Berlin (though his own detailed plans for the same were eventually rejected in favor of those put forward by Wilhelm von Humboldt). When the new university finally opened in 1810, Fichte was the first head of the philosophical faculty as well as the first elected rector of the university. His final years saw no diminishment in the pace either of his public activity or of his philosophical efforts. He continued to produce new lectures on the foundations and first principles of his system, as well as new introductory lectures on philosophy in general ("Logic and Philosophy" [1812] and "The Facts of Consciousness" [1813]), political philosophy ("System of the Doctrine of Right" [1812] and "Doctrine of the State" [1813]) and ethics ("System of Ethical Theory" [1812]). As presaged perhaps by his earlier book on Machiavelli, these late forays into the domain of practical philosophy betray a darker view of human nature and defend a more authoritarian view of the state than anything to be found in Fichte's earlier writings on these subject. In 1813 Fichte canceled his lectures so that his students could enlist in the "War of Liberation" against Napoleon, of which Fichte himself proved to be an indirect casualty. From his wife, who was serving as a volunteer nurse in a Berlin military hospital, he contracted a fatal infection of which he died on January 29, 1814." (SEP)

COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS. BY HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR JOHN BROOKS, GOVERNOR OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS. A PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS BY AN ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE OF THIS COMMONWEALTH, PASSED ON THE SIXTEENTH DAY OF JUNE LAST, ENTITLED "AN ACT RELATING TO THE CALLING OF A CONVENTION"...[caption title]

Boston. Sept. 12, 1820.. Broadside, 15 x 9 1/2 inches. Old folds. Short closed tear in left margin along one fold, not affecting text. Docketed on verso in contemporary manuscript; contemporary autograph inscription in lower margin: "Copy attest Alden Bradford Sec[retary] of the Common[wealth]." Very good. Broadside proclamation by the governor of Massachusetts announcing the results of a statewide vote to decide whether or not to call for delegates to change the state constitution. This was the second state constitutional convention, after the first of 1780, which resulted in nine amendments to the foundational document. Maine had been granted statehood in March 1820, a few months prior, separating it from Massachusetts. Having voted in town meetings across the state, the people of Massachusetts voted 11,756 to 6,593 in favor of amending the constitution. The governor therefore called upon all qualified citizens to assemble "on the third Monday of October next...[to] elect one or more Delegates...to meet Delegates from other Towns, in Convention at the State House, in Boston, on the third Wednesday of November next, to take into consideration the propriety and expediency of making any (and if any what) alterations or amendments in the present Constitution of Government of the Commonwealth...." The broadside is signed by Alden Bradford, Secretary of the Commonwealth. A nice piece of Massachusetts constitutional history.

Selseleh (Silsilis.) Vue des Grottes Taillees a L'Entree des Anciennes Carrieres

Paris.: Panckouke.. Ca. 1820.. Copper plate engraving (uncolored), image approx. 17 x 25 inches on sheet approximately 21 x 28 inches. Very good condition: very light scattered foxing (mainly outside image area), a few short tears to edges (image not affected). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 47 from Volume I of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown is a view of Royal Shrines hollowed out of the cliff at the entrance to the ancient quarries found at Silsilis (Silsila); the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of this ancient sight. .
