View of the Country from Urshalun Teeba

London: Rodwell & Martin, 1 March 1820. Hand-coloured aquatint by Robert Havell & Son, after Fraser. 18 1/8 x 23 1/4inches. 21 x 30 inches. A fine example of a view taken during the first recorded journey by Europeans through the Himalayas. In 1815, following the end of the war with Nepal, Fraser and his brother William, a political agent, spent two months on a tour of the Himalayas. Their journey took the brothers along the river valleys of the Himalayas, with occasional sorties to higher latitudes and as far as the sources of both the Jumna and Ganges rivers. This view is from the spectacular Views in the Himala Mountains which contains twenty of Havell's masterly plates worked up from sketches made on the spot by Fraser. In style the plates are similar to, and very much a match for Henry Salt's and the Daniell brothers' large scale views published 10 and 20 years earlier. This was a deliberate strategy by the publishers who drew attention to the similarities in their advertisements which describe the work as being `In Elephant Folio, uniform with Daniell's Oriental Scenery, and Salt's Views in Abyssinia..' Garrison-Morton 1845. The first official pharmacopeia of the United States owed its existence largely to the efforts of the American physician Lyman Spalding, who began campaigning for a national pharmacopeia in 1815. Spalding's efforts finally bore fruit in a national convention that met in 1820 and adopted a pharmacopeia based mainly on the Pharmacopoeia of the Massachusetts Medical Society (1808).

      I. Poetiska stycken. I-III. Sthlm, Ecksteinska boktryckeriet, 1820-28. 12:o. XXXVII,(1),462 + XVII,(1),516 + XIII,(1),560 s.

        Monsr. J. Isabey's Exhibition Rooms, 61 Pall Mall / Salle d'Exhibition de J. Isabey, a Londres

Published by J. Isabey, June, 1820. Colour-printed aquatint. Printed on wove Whatman paper watermarked 1820. In excellent condition. Image size: 7 ¼ x 9 7/8 inches. 8 ¼ x 10 7/8 inches. 13 x 18 ¾ inches. A fascinating view of J. Isabey's picture gallery in Pall Mall, London, by the celebrated American engraver William James Bennett. William James Bennett was born in England, and received his artistic training at the celebrated Royal Academy. He garnered a reputation as an accomplished watercolourist and exhibited many fine landscapes at the Academy's annual exhibitions. Bennett was one of the principle members of the Society of Painters in Watercolours and helped establish watercolour as a prominent medium in England. He displayed an exceptional talent at aquatint and during his career produced many fine prints for some the most lavish English plate books. He emigrated to the United States in 1826, and is best known for his views of American cities, including the Hudson Valley Region, Niagara Falls, and numerous port cities such as New York, Charleston, and Buffalo. Bennett's series of views of American Cities set a standard, and established a compositional formula, for topographical art in America. His views remain the most memorable and beautiful examples of the genre, and they exerted a lasting influence on generations of American artists. This beautiful image of Mr. Isabey's exhibition rooms in Pall Mall is not listed separately amongst Bennett's work, but according to DeSilva and Deak, he completed a number of aquatints in 1820, which are not recorded. It is possible that this picturesque interior scene is one of the images, which was not immediately attributed to Bennett. This charming work closely resembles images published by the leading English printseller Rudolph Ackermann, in particular an image depicting his gallery "The Repository of Arts". As in the Ackermann image, connoisseurs are shown enjoying the exhibition rooms in Isabey's gallery. Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) was a French artist and what might be called "artistic entrepreneur". He managed to become Marie Antoinette's artist in residence for miniatures. Later, he designed Napoleon and Josephines and drawings in London of his own work and others. The exhibition should have been more successful than it was, but it coincided with George IV's divorce, during which most British aristocrats fled to their country estates.         View of East Rock, New Haven

Ct.: George Henry Durrie A WONDERFUL VIEW OF EAST ROCK BY ACCLAIMED ARTIST GEORGE DURRIE Oil on canvas Canvas size: 20 1/4" x 25 1/4" Frame size: 28 1/4" x 33 1/2" George Henry Durrie was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1820. Along with his older brother John, he studied sporadically from 1839 to 1841 with the portrait painter Nathaniel Jocelyn. Between 1840 to 1842 he became an itinerant painter in Connecticut and New Jersey, expanding his repetoire to include still life, genre and Shakespearean scenes. He finally settled in New Haven, Connecticut where he spent the remainder of his life. Durrie produced roughly 300 paintings, of which the earliest were portraits; by the mid-1840s he had begun to paint landscape and rural genre scenes of New England and these are considered to be his finest achievement. His landscapes are characterized by the use of pale though cheerful colors and by the repeated use of certain motifs: an isolated farmhouse, a road placed diagonally leading the eye into the composition, and a hill in the distance. By the late 1850s Durrie's reputation had started to grow, and he was exhibiting at prestigious institutions, such as the National Academy of Design. In 1861 Currier & Ives helped popularize his work by publishing hand-colored lithographs of two of his winter landscapes, New England Winter Scene and the Farmyard in Winter. Two more were published in 1863 and a further six after his death that same year. This captivating painting of East Rock is a quintessential Durrie work. The sophisticated simplicity of the composition is enlivened by the delicate nuances of green color that punctuate the various landscape elements, while the diminuative figure in the foreground only serves to emphasize the large scale of the towering Rock. The hill, rising some four hundred feet and is easily visible from many parts of New Haven as well as from surrounding towns thus making it a prominent landmark of the area. Thus, it is fitting that East Rock should be so gloriously rendered by one of New Haven's most prominent and well-respected nineteenth-century artists.. Book.

Wollstonecraft, D. Wordsworth, M. Shelley and the Bronte sisters (Oxford Companion to English Literature, p. 843). Recent research, however, has firmly established that six of these thirteen novels, each possessing a "confident-seeming literary style, and broad evangelical emphasis" (Garside) were, in fact, written by Mrs. Elizabeth B.         Principles of Political Economy, Considered with a View to their Practical Application

London: John Murray 1820 London: John Murray, 1820. First edition. 8vo (219 x 132 mm.). vi, 601 pp. Bound in later half cloth and marbled boards, paper label. Very good. Goldsmith 22767; Lowndes, 1459; Kress C577 . First edition of this important classic of economic theory. "There can be no doubt that [Malthus'] importance for economists today rests mainly on his Principles of Political Economy. It was because of this latter work that J. M. Keynes (1933) reinstated Malthus as a major figure in modern economic thought" (New Palgrave). "One of the founders of modern economics," Malthus was credited by Keynes with framing the theory "that a lack of effective demand can cause economic crises" (PMM 251). "In his Principles of Political Economy, Malthus was proposing investment in public works and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB IX:70)

No watermark on the print, but the letterpress is watermarked C. Wilmott 1819. Joppien & Smith 3.372B.b. Webber was engaged as the official artist for Cook's third voyage, during which Cook discovered Hawaii & Alaska.Webber was more fully trained than any of the artists of the previous voyages, and he and Cook worked closely together to illuminate "the unavoidable imperfections of written accounts, by enabling us to preserve, and to bring home, such drawings of the most memorable scenes of our transactions, as could only be expected by a professed and skilled artist." (J. Cook & J. King, Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, London 1784, Vol I, p.5). Because he was there with Cook in the field, his paintings "constituted a new visual source for the study of history..." (Smith, Bernard, Art as Information. Sydney, 1978). Cook's ships were the first Western contact with the natives of Nootka Sound and the furs they traded with them were sold at a vast profit in Macao in the following year, 1779.Soon American and English ships were making annual trips to the Northwest Coast in search of "Sea Beaver" pelts. Only 16 views were published in the book - the two views of Macao indicate its significance in the East.

The Experimental Farmer: being strictures on various branches of husbandry and agriculture, drawn from a long series of practice in different parts of Great-Britain; containing Observations on planting and Preserving Young Trees, with an approved method of thinning them, to become timber. Likewise, Plans for Laying-out Land, on a five and four field system. Also, a new method to bring the most barren land into cultivation, for meadows and sheep walks: and a variety of other useful information in every branch of this art, absolutely necessary for every person, from the opulent farmer, to the proprietors of small pieces of land

London: printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, [N.d., but publisher's advertisements dated September 1820]. 8vo. (8 7/8 x 5 3/8 inches). Half- title, 1p. errata, 16pp. publisher's catalogue at end dated September 1820. Occasional wood-engraved decorations. Original boards, rebacked. First edition, second issue, of this charming work, full of fascinating practical information on land management at the turn of the 19th century This appears to be a second, remainder issue of the first edition: the dedication is dated 1806, the text has occasional watermark dates of 1804, but the title is a cancel issued by Sherwood, Neely & Jones who are also responsible for the publisher's catalogue at the end which is dated 1820. The first issue was dated 1806 and published by T. Ostell. No copies of the present issue are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years, and only one example of the 1807 issue. "Although this Work may not be written in fine stile and polished language ... it will be found to be clear and comprehensive ... suited as well to the understanding of the refined Gentleman as to that of the industrious farmer' (introduction, p.ix). The work is largely made up from many short entries under numerous sub-headings, and reads like a note-book of observations and calculations: a charmingly straight-forward work which nevertheless imparts a great deal of practical knowledge. For example, in the section on planting trees, Tibbs extols the financial benefits of growing trees for timber and in an innovative way combines the purely financial calculations of the costs and profits of planting an acre of land with practical instructions on how to plant and manage the plantation for the period needed to see a good profit (42 years).According to the introduction, Thomas Tibbs received his initial training in agriculture from his grandfather at Fidden Farm in Wiltshire, from there he moved to the Chiltern Hundreds where he farmed on his own land. He subsequently worked for Charles Hill, J. Sainsbury, and King George III's Flemish Farm before becoming Land Steward to Lord Grenville (the dedicatee) at Burnham in Buckinghamshire: this wide practical experience allowing him to write with authority on the numerous subjects he covers in this work.         Original 19th Century Watercolor of French Tradesman: Marchand de Paniers

British Isles : c. 1820. Fine condition A scarce and charming original early nineteenth century watercolor painting on wove paper. (7 x 7.25 inches, 177 x 186 mm.) The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period, as was the custom, yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown, a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist, likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes, complete with engraved plates, of the trades, and costumes of then exotic regions of the globe, thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in double Ivory French matting with 1" neo-classical gilt moulding, glazed with Conservation Glass. Sized to 17 1/2 x 20 inches.
