"The first artistically competent and exhaustive illustration of the golden age of London church building and, as it turned out, the last possible one before the demolitions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the destruction wrought by the second World War and the overshadowings, dwarfings and obliterations by office blocks since then . No fewer than 52 Wren churches, apparently still in good fettle, are represented, with four by Hawksmoor, three by Gibbbs . Moreover they are not depicted in the traditional way by an approximate outline quite divorced from its neighbourhood as in Maitland's History, but they stand three-dimensinal and four-square in their streets, or churchyards, sometimes even animated with staffage of Regency Londoners." A rare book on the art of water colouring featuring, as stated in the title, watercolour samples of almost every colour that exists in nature. Arranged in vertical columns of four hues apiece per colour and seven columns per page, turning through the 22 plates results in a visual feast for the eyes. The text provides instructions for mixing the different colours to achieve other colours. Signed by the author at the end of the text. Text and covers a bit foxed, the plates and lovely title-page remain in fine, bright condition. Rare Book Hub finds only a copy of the third edition sold in 2017. World Cat locates copies at Yale, NGA, University of Wisconsin as well as BN and CNAM.

Rare - First Edition of this "Landmark of study on peripheral nerve injury"!Joseph Swan (1791-1874) "in his pioneering work 'Dissertation on the Treatment of Morbid Local Affections of Nerves', Swan discusses a number of the pathological conditions that can occur in a peripheral nerve (Swan. 1820). These conditions include traumatic injury, tumors, and inflammation of the nerve. One of the most common traumatic nerve injuries that Swan reports is damage due to venesection or bleeding, an extremely common practice for many medical diseases. During the venesection. the bleeding fleam (a handheld sharpened knife-like device to open a vein) often injured a nearby peripheral nerve. Following up on earlier surgical views. Swan argues only the rare case of venesection-related injury requires surgery. Like Swan, other contemporary surgeons continued to argue that a surgeon had to either take the nerve with the lesion or amputate the limb-the other Option (Swan. 1820). Swan includes in his discussion the issues of pain and, more importantly, the principles of healing of injured nerves. Swan also provides an early clinical findings to what we now call the Tinel sign (Jules Tinel 1879-1952) (Tinel, 1917). Swan reported the following clinical description:'When a tumour is forming in the substance of a nerve it causes very violent pain, which sometimes affects the whole nerve in which it is contained. The pain is very much aggravated by any pressure made on it, and when it is moved. It is generally moveable from side to side only, as the upper and lower extremities are confined by the nerve.' Swan (1820)Swan was among the first of the nineteenth-century surgeons to argue that divided nerves that are surgical by repaired heal the best. Swan interestingly proffered a surgical opinion that surgery actually provided better results than no surgery at all (Swan, 1834). Part of Swan's surgical treatment included the application of leeches and evaporating lotions to the injured parts, while placing those parts at rest (Swan, 1820).Swan comments on divided nerves and their ability to heal:'Many experiments have been made by physiologist, to prove that when a nerve is divided, all sensation and motion are lost in the parts to which it was distributed, and that after the reunion of the divided parts it performs its functions as well as before the division.' Swan (1820)One of the earliest illustrations of a partial by divided nerve appears in Swan's 1820 monograph. Swan comments that, in experimental studies, when a nerve is divided. the ends retract. If the nerve is only partially divided, the intact fascicles hold the nerve in position, but the cut portions still retract. This concept is illustrated on page. 110.Swan's book can be considered one of the pioneer monographs on peripheral nerve injury and treatment. In addition to the 25 clinical case studies contained in the book, Swan provides an additional 22 experimental studies on rabbit nerve injuries and repairs, clearly making the monograph an early landmark study on peripheral nerve injury." Titsingh was the chief for the Dutch East India Company, and was stationed in at Deshima, a tiny isl- land reserved for the Dutch in the Nagasaki harbour. The work was most likely done during either the reigns of Emperor Jiaqing [1796-1820], or Emperor Daoguang [1820-1850. . The delicacy of the lines, willow-like Chinese women and the background captures the essence of Chinese painting of this period. Though the scene most likely depicts and earlier period, the work was done in the early to mid-19th century. . The hand-coloring is exquisite, reflecting high-skill, with superb composition. Clearly these artistic skills are by a famous painter of the period. Sadly, this work is not signed. It is most likely one of a series of twelve scenes telling a classic story of concubine life in the Imperial palace, Beijing. . *** THE SCENE: The central scene shows the inner apartment of beautiful Chinese women in elaborate & elegant costumes. Because of their refined surroundings, furniture, decorations, screen, ceramics, lighting and the presence of hand-maids, these most likely Imperial Concubines. . Three women sit at a large table. The central woman is painting a large tree. Her companion to the right points a delicate finger at the painting. The woman to the left is seated on a ceramic stool and engages in conversation with the artist. . There two hand-maids at the left, who look at each other, one holds a tray with two tea cups. . In the background is a very tall and wide folding screen illustrating tenderly painted bamboo sprigs, with a superb border at the top and bottom edges. . The room has a beautiful stone table with a lovely flower in full blossom to the background. . The furniture is the typical "Ming" period style, There is a lovely table in the right front foreground with three flower vases. . The floor tile are drawn in "Western" perspective, showing the lines diminish in size showing the depth of the room. . In the left background is a round door, leading to another room. In this room, is an elaborately furnished table, with comb, brush and mirror. Before the mirror is a young & beautiful Chinese women arranging her coiffure. The room is decorated with flower vases, ceramic stool, wooden table, a table cloth and a screened window. . *** From the activities of the artist, its clear that some of the Imperial Concubines were gifted and talented painters. . *** CONDITION: The Painting: This work is painted in fine laid paper.       London John Murray 1820 - First edition. 8vo., vi, 601 pp., small ownership stamp to lower outside corner of title-page, small, early 20th century bookseller's label to lower outside corner of verso of upper free endpaper, a little age-toning and small ink smudge to title, otherwise near-fine, nineteenth century half calf over marbled boards, rubbed at extremities, spine faded, a very good copy. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. EXAMPLES OF, HERBS AND PHYSICIANS . *** This album contains 23 very nicely hand-drawn and gouache colored depictions in black outline of traditional Chinese and physicians & medicine. It also shows a traditional pharmacist with his herbs, packaged medicine, and various herbal remedies. . Depictions of a traditional a Chinese physician, his various male and female patients with illness. Clear identification of the illness, specific acupuncture "Chi" points where to insert needles and treat patients. . From the context, the work was either done in Fuzhou or written about medical practice & herbs of that area. . Good illustrations of many acupuncture points used to treat specific maladies, the locations and names of the energy [Qing] channels & 'points.' . The work still conveys its original intent to teach, instruct and edify readers by conveying the story about traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and how to identify and cure various illness. . *** THE ILLUSTRATIONS: Like other traditional Chinese period books, this one begins from right and progresses left. It is a folded scroll, viewed in a series of 'scenes.' A scene can be no more than one or two pages. The story flows along, with a space, and continues with the next part or 'scene.' The work is not divided by page numbers or clear marks, but by a small break in the rhythm of the previous scene and subject. This format is charming and appealing, as the continued 'scenes" move along. . THE FIRST SCENE: The work begins with a lantern showing the road directions: North & South and a small frog. This is lovely drawing of five Arhats and sages, who embark on a journey to bring traditional Chinese herbal-medicine to a physician Wang Shi, and a pharmacist. . The Chinese texts reads: "Fu he yidai hedao bu tong chang hou shang ren ting zu bu qian." Meaning "Because the Fu cheng [a Fuzhou river channel is blocked, the travelers can not cross the river, until the bridge is repaired." Further notes state about journey: "Zao lue zhi hai fu shou liu nan zhi ku." "On journeys travelers suffer from harm and plunder [of pirates] and other difficult obstacles." Covers two and a half pages. . THE SECOND SCENE: A merchant sees a vision of his mentor, and recalls his teachings, thus bringing the physician brings five large cakes of medicine and a scale. The physicians buys the medicine. The physician tells the merchant: "Yi shi fa da shou zai de ren zhong." Meaning "Success is granted to those loyal to the Tao & medical teachings" or something to that Covers two pages. . THE THIRD SCENE: The physician visits a traditional Chinese pharmacist and doctor. The pharmacist and the physician sit down and discuss traditional Chinese medicine. The pharmacist has a large table, with many packages of Chinese potent and herbal medicines. There is a sign on his table reading Medicine "Yao Wang" or "Medicine Wang" meaning medicine herbalist Dr. Wang. There is also a small Chinese framed medicine name on the table: "BAO zhi ke shou sheng" meaning "Guaranteed to stop your disease cough syndromes." One page. . THE FOURTH SCENE: Consists of seventeen pages, showing several individuals who suffering from various illness or maladies. Each drawing has a small box with the Chinese name of the sickness, and the associated acupuncture points noted. . There are some references to Fuzhou [Fujian] and the Fucheng river. And other references to treatment using "Tanzhi Bing" [cream of 'ji-shi'] provides relief from maladies sold at the herbal doctor's stall in scene two. The use of "qi xia fan jiang xian gao" [a kind of grease] to relieve skin maladies. . *** RARITY OF CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE, MEDICINE & PHARMACOEPIA BOOKS . Hand-drawn, gauche color-illustrated books of this subject and period are seldom found on the market, and are quite RARE. . If found the condition is typically less that excellent. Such items suffer from the climatic and usual attrition rate taking its toll on paper goods. Sultry and damp Chinese weather, insects, mice, and other predators have commonly damaged native items. . We always try our utmost to bring into our inventory, items in the best of condition, we make exceptions when it comes to early Chinese medical works of this nature. . This subject is RARE, genuine period items remain quite difficult to find items meeting our high quality & condition standards. This current item regardless of its less than excellent condition is worthy of addition to our collection due to the uniqueness. Items showing traditional Chinese medicine, pharmacopoeia, herbs remain elusive and important. graphic examples. . *** THE BINDING: The accordion-folded work is solidly bound adhered to its period wooden boards. These board appear to have been roughly black painted perhaps 80-90years ago. There is some of the usual and minor warping to one the boards. . *** CONDITION: The accordion folded pages: The Verso [back]: . This work has been re-backed perhaps 100 or so years ago using a firm buff-color rough Chinese paper. Two pages of that have been re-backed again over that paper with different period hand-made Chinese paper with brushed character text. The top and lower edges were trimmed at some old time in the past. . The re-backing reinforced several old mended tears, tiny holes, minor surface soiling, mis-folds, minor & occasional feint stains, a bit loss of text at the top edge due to old trimming, feint damp stain, and the like from improper past storage. . The Recto [front]: The recto remains impressive with the original drawn and colored illustrations, conveying the essence of the work. It showing its age, by and large fairly clean, solid and firm. The past restoration has left some old tears visible, this does not greatly detracting from the overall impression of the whole work, It is obvious to us, former owners have made efforts to protect, preserve and restore this work in an effort to insure its continued survival. Per the above, some parts of the work remarkably remains quite clean on white paper. The attrition rate has definitely influenced this work. Nevertheless, it is still worthy of acquisition and preservation, research and study. . We tend to be overly critical of condition, preferring to over rather than under described. Lewis, light spotting to plates, offsetting from plates to text, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, a very good set. Hughes travelled in the Mediterranean and Greece in 1813-14 as tutor to Richard Townley Parker. They visited Spain, Italy, Sicily, Greece and Albania. Hughes and Parker arrived in Preveza late in 1813; they were joined on their Albanian tour by C.R. Cockerell, who spent about two months with them. Most of the book is in fact devoted to a description of this part of their travels, and 10 of the 12 engravings are after drawings by Cockerell illustrating sites in Epirus. The rare English language edition of Voyage en Moree. This translation by Ann Plumptre first appeared in 1813. It contains different illustrations from those used in the other editions in French, German, etc. Pouqueville, a doctor, travelled with the French Expedition to Egypt attached to the scientific commission. He was later captured by pirates and ended up in prison, first in Tripolis for ten months, and later in Constantinople for two years. During the years of his capture he taught himself modern Greek, and on his being set free and returning to France in 1801, he wrote the present work giving an account of his time in the Levant. Binder's ticket of Frederick Mayo of Richmond, VA (at the time Jefferson's bookbinder) to front pastedown, contemporary ownership label and inscription to front pastedown and front free endpaper respectively of Benjamin Watkins Leigh. Extremities somewhat worn with a few marks to boards, joints rubbed, corners gently bumped, front free endpaper a little loose, contents browned and foxed with some ink staining to leaf B3, overall a very good copy. First edition of the Virginian politician's critical response to the Supreme Court's McCulloch v. Maryland ruling, calling for a return to "the principles of our fathers". Jefferson, who was a constant admirer of Taylor's works, declared it "the most logical retraction of our governments to the original and true principles of the constitution creating them, which has appeared since the adoption of that instrument. I may not perhaps concur in all its opinions, great and small; for no two men ever thought alike on so many points. But on all its important questions, it contains the true political faith, to which every catholic republican should steadfastly hold. It should be put into the hands of all our functionaries, authoritatively, as a standing instruction, and true exposition of our Constitution, as understood at the time we agreed to it" (Washington, p. 213). The provenance of this copy has several ties with contemporary Virginian politics. It was previously owned by the Virginia senator and lawyer Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781–1849). Leigh's ownership inscription on the front free endpaper states that this is "one of the books of my wife's father given to me by his widow". His father-in-law was the prominent American Loyalist John Wickham (1763–1839), whose reputation as a leading attorney was cemented during his successful defence of Jefferson's former Vice President, Aaron Burr, in the treason trial of 1807.

However, in 1819 Banks instead decided to employ Lindley in his library and herbarium at Soho Square as an assistant to Robert Brown. Lindley grasped this opportunity with both hands, and by Banks's death had completed important work on roses, Digitalis, and apples. The acuity of his taxonomical judgement may be gauged by the survival of many genera which he defined when he was barely twenty-one. Lyell, to whom Lindley had dedicated his monograph on roses, presented him with £100, which Lindley used to purchase a microscope and to begin the herbarium, which at his death contained some 58,000 sheets" (ODNB). Lindley notes in his preface that "to the noble library and inexhaustible Botanical treasures of...         Addresses and Squibs in the Contested Election for Members in Parliament, 1820.

A unique and invaluable collection of what is possibly a complete collection of addresses and squibs for the election of 1820 comprising 80 separate printed pieces, mostly 4to or smaller, Plus the printed poll "The Poll at the Election of Members of Parliament for the Town and County of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Taken Before Nicholas Naters, Esquire, Sheriff, on the 10th and 11th Days of March, 1820. Candidates Sir Matthew Ridley, Cuthbert Ellison, William Scott." Newcastle: Printed by George Angus, for Emerson Charnley, 1820. This would appear to be a collection put together during the mid-nineteenth century with a specially made title page set in a variety of attractive types; there is some trivial damp staining towards the lower part of a few sheets and at some time in the last 50 year it has been rebound in buckram. The first address is dated 3rd March and the last April 8th 1820; they record a typically robust and knockabout election with subtle and not-so-subtle claims and libels flying to and fro. Ridley and Ellison were elected, Ellison's part in the election being taken by his brother as he was abroad owing to health reasons during the hustings and election itself. There are also a few small newspaper clippings included, plus the cards and colours of each of the candidates. The compiler has made a few biographical notes here and there and has identified the anonymous characters in one of the printed poems. Whilst it is not uncommon to find individual addresses and squibs, I have handled many over the last thirty years, it is rare to see the output of a single election in such completeness and detail. The 36 page printed poll would appear to be a Large Paper copy [10½ x 8 inches] and printed on one side only.

      Rodwell & Martin London 1820 - Large folio (67 x 55 cm), pictorial aquatint title, 20 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates by Robert Havell & Son after Fraser; light marginal soiling, modern red half morocco gilt,over older green faded boards preserving original large red morocco lettering piece to upper cover. First edition of the finest illustrated work on the Himalayas, amongst the finest aquatints of mountain scenery ever produced. James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856), was the eldest son of a landed Scottish family. He travelled to India and became a merchant in Calcutta in 1814. Whilst in India he studied painting under the tutelage of the eminent artist George Chinnery. He visited the Himalayas in 1815-16 where his brother, William, was the then Political Agent to Major General Martindell. William was appointed to visit local chiefs in those parts of the Himalayas to the north-west of Garhwal and between the rivers Sutlej and Jumna in Bashahr and James went with him. In December 1791, Elkanah Watson proposed to the New York State legislature that natural waterways could be used to create what later became the Erie Canal across New York State, connecting the Hudson River and New York City with the Great Lakes. Later he competed with Dewitt Clinton for the credit for this concept. In 1792, with General Philip Schuyler, Watson formed a company to build locks and canals, starting with the canal at Little Falls, New York, about halfway through the Mohawk Valley where the river had rapids that prevented through traffic.         Courtly Leisure and Activities.

      Canton 2nd half of 19th century - An album (27.5 x 42.5 cm) of 12 watercolour and gouache studies on pith paper; occasional cracks. Contemporary red patterned silk binding. Fine scenes showing rich interiors and fine costumes - this album of especially large format. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light, they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. The sheets are dried, trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect. Very fine detail could be achieved but pith did not lend itself to the flat wash of colour favoured for European watercolours. Carl Crossman in his book The Decorative Arts of the China Trade (originally published under the title The China Trade) gives an excellent list of export painters with a note of those known to have painted on pith. These include Tingqua, Sunqua and Youqua. From 1757 until 1842 Canton was the only Chinese port open to trade with the west and it is no surprise that of the eight studios identified by Crossman as producing works on pith, six were in Canton. It seems that the 1830s and 1840s may have been the heyday of pith painting. The international trading bases, the waterfront 'factories' on the 'Hongs' in Canton, where they were produced, were partially burnt during the First Opium War (1839-41) and totally destroyed in a fire of 1856. The foreign trading companies then moved to Honan and subsequently put up splendid new offices on reclaimed land at Shamian Island, a little up river. As the result of the Treaty of Nanking, in 1842 additional Chinese ports were opened up for foreign trade and Hong Kong was established as a major trading centre. By 1860 references to China in the Illustrated London News, plentiful three years earlier, were few and far between. That is not to say that painting on pit [Attributes: Soft Cover]
