        Courtly Ladies at Leisure

Canton 2nd half of 19th century - A set of 6 studies in watercolour and gouache on pith paper, edged in turquoise silk ribbon and laid on paper; glazed and framed. An exquisite group of interior scenes, exclusively of noblewomen and ladies in waiting, engaging in various genteel activities, such as flower arranging, painting, poetry reading and writing, surrounded by elegant Qing dynasty furniture and ornaments, including unusual asymmetrical display cabinets, exotic bird swings, and porcelain vases, all standing or sitting on elaborately patterned silk carpets. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light, they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. The sheets are dried, trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect. Very fine detail could be achieved but pith did not lend itself to the flat wash of colour favoured for European watercolours. Carl Crossman in his book The Decorative Arts of the China Trade (originally published under the title The China Trade) gives an excellent list of export painters with a note of those known to have painted on pith. These include Tingqua, Sunqua and Youqua. From 1757 until 1842 Canton was the only Chinese port open to trade with the west and it is no surprise that of the eight studios identified by Crossman as producing works on pith, six were in Canton. It seems that the 1830s and 1840s may have been the heyday of pith painting. The international trading bases, the waterfront 'factories' on the 'Hongs' in Canton, where they were produced, were partially burnt during the First Opium War (1839-41) and totally destroyed in a fire of 1856. The foreign trading companies then moved to Honan and subsequently put up splendid new offices on reclaimed land at Shamian Island, a little up river. As the result of [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Sketches of Scenery in South Wales

0, London - Oblong folio, 44*30 cm, 6 litho plates, original printed wrappers, stitched as issued (very small half inch worm track and a few micro holes through upper wrapper and first three plates), wrapper title, printed by Moser and Harris's Lithographic Press, No 71 Grosvenor Street, Brunswick Square, nd but c 1820. Plates are: Aberdylis Vale of Neath. Melincourt Vale of Neath. Yscwd yr Rhyd In the grounds of W: Williams Esq. Yscwd Inon Cam Vale of Neath. Entrance to Porth yr Ogof Caveer Vale of Neath. Kil Hepsti Vale of Neath. Originally priced at 7s 6d. Very rare. The plates are quite crude, but represent an exceptionally early lithographic work, when techniques were still experimental. It is especially pleasing to have such a work in the original wrappers! Copies of some of the plates have been traced to the National Library of Wales, cataloged as soft-ground etchings. Swansea also have the wrappers and 5 of the 6 plates. As such, ours would appear to be the only known complete copy. Housed in a modern custom, felt lined, brown cloth up and over box with a paper label to spine. It was dissatisfaction with Moser and Harris's lithographic printing that prompted the subsequently famous Hulmandel to set up his own press, and experiment to improve on their work. George Orleans DELAMOTTE (1809-1821 fl) artist and teacher, was the son of a French refugee. His brother was William Alfred Delamotte (1775-1863), drawing master at the Sandhurst Military Academy, whose son Philip was a photography pioneer known for his series on the disassembly of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park and its reconstruction in Sydenham.         Autograph Letter Signed to Theophilus Pierson mentioning Adultery

Good. One page letter. Approximately 8" x 7.75". Old folds with tears, a few chips affecting only one letter, good, but stable, clear and readable. Mooney writes from Rahway, New Jersey on 6 April 1820 about a potential land deal caused by strange circumstances (original spelling retained):"We got home veriwell and Aby has gone to the Scotch Planes to try her luck at hir trade. The same nite I got home from York there broak out a Mutiny at John Rodens. Roden had been to York, came home and found his man Pierson and his wife both in Pierson's bed. He had provided a good club for them but Pierson made his escape. Roden says that he means to sell..."The rest of the letter deals with details about possibly buying Roden's property, Roden was hesitant to hold a mortgage and Mooney asks Pierson to come out and fix it with Roden. It is unclear whether the manservant Pierson was related to the Pierson who is the recipient of the letter, forced to guess we'd say not and that it was a coincidence. The recipient, Theofilius Pierson (1792-1853), was a prosperous sawyer and landowner. We could find little about Mooney (1763-1834) beyond his dates. Both were from Westfield, a few miles away from Rahway. At any event a livelier than usual letter that belies the staid reputations of our predecessors.

Truth Versus A Wesleyan Methodist, and Other Objectors; containing Remarks and Animadversions on a book, entitled "Methodist Error," &c.

Josiah Shinn, Philadelphia 1820 - The distinguished author of this book is in defense of hundreds of black slave parishioners in his time who populated Methodist churches in Eastern and Southern states of the United States. It is replete with defenses of Methodist practices and has many footnotes throughout. It is certainly a milestone in the growth of christianity in the U.S. William Smith Stockton, was an acknowledged leader of the Reform Movement. He also was a leader in the Temperance Reform Movement four years before the American Temperance Society formed. Mr. Stockton, was also active in prison reform. The entirety of the book is in direct response to a previous book by John S. Watson, entitled "Methodist Error". This is indeed, a rare copy. The binding is of the tight back method with cords attached to the boards which has kept the volume intact despite the breakdown of the exterior folding leather edges. Interior hinges yet functioning. There is foxing throughout. At pp. 65/66 & 73/74 there is paper loss on those pages at the front lower corners not affecting any of the text. The red leather spine label states, legibly, "Truth Against Error". Cover edges are rubbed without major loss of leather. Appendix at the rear is from pp.245 thru 270. Insurance is reccomended.       - 12°: A-L 12 M 6, gepag.: 269 [3] pp. Titelpagina in houtsnede. Modern kunstleer. Autograph letter signed. Nov 24 1820.

1820 - Single leaf, recto only. Manuscript in ink. Slightly soiled and chipped at edges. 3 Downing St [London], Friday Nov 24, A brief but interestingletter written immediately after Sir William Parry's return from his first Arctic expedition in search of the northwest passage. Though the recipient of the letter is unnamed, it is almost certainly Parry's publisher at John Murray, and the content indicates how swiftly operations were underway to begin printing the official narrative of the expedition. It reads in part: ?I shall be ready to commence printing on Monday. Let me know if I may employ Clowes. The Hecla has only just arrived in the River, and I have written to Mr. Beechey to come up to us as soon as possible, about the drawings. ? The references within the letter are to printer William Clowes of Northumberland-court who was indeed employed to set and print the text, and Liet Frederick William Beechey, who provided many of the illustrations from which the lithographed plates were prepared. The book in question would beJournal of a voyage for the discovery of a north-west passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific; performed in the years 1819?20 in his majesty's ships Hecla and Griperand was the first of Parry's arctic narratives to be published by John Murray. Setting off in early 1819, the expedition journeyed up the west side of Baffin Bay and through Lancaster Sound, although were halted here at Melville Island by pack ice. Wintering over here, the attempts to continue west the following season were thwarted by inclement weather, and bothHeclaandGriper arrived back in the Thames mid-November 1820, mere days before this letter was written.

[n.p.]: 1820. A Rare Cross Patée Shaped Book [CROSS PATÉE BINDING]. SCRAP-BOOK. Twenty-six leaves of mainly white paper with a few blue paper leaves, all with steel engraved views, hand colored cut-out flowers, etc. ca. 1820. Bound ca. 1820 in full dark blue straight grain morocco in a 'Cross Pattée' design. Covers bordered and elaborately gilt decorated enclosing a central blind-stamped 'Lyre' design. Blue watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. A near fine, very rare and unusual shaped example. Only a very few bindings in unorthodox shapes have been recorded, an unusually high number were in the Hauck collection but none were in a 'Cross Patée' shape. A cross pattée (or "cross patty" or "cross Pate", known also as "cross formée/formy" or croix pattée) is a type of Christian cross, which has arms narrow at the center, and often flared in a curve or straight line shape, to be broader at the perimeter. The form appears very early in medieval art, for example in a metalwork treasure binding given to Monza Cathedral by Queen Theodelinda (d. 628), and the 8th century lower cover of the Lindau Gospels in the Morgan Library. An early English example from the start of the age of heraldry proper (i.e. about 1200) is found in the arms of Baron Berkeley. The word pattée is a French adjective in the feminine form used in its full context as la croix pattée, meaning literally "footed cross", from the noun patte, meaning foot, generally that of an animal. The cross has four splayed feet, each akin to the foot, for example, of a chalice or candelabrum. In German it is called Tatzenkreuz from Tatze, foot, paw. Planché provides a dubious suggestion that the term comes from the Latin verb pateo, to lie open, be spread. He states it to be discernible on the standard of King Stephen (1135-1154).

A voyage to the West Indies: containing various observations made during a residence in Barbadoes, and several of the Leeward Islands, with some notices and illustrations relative to the city of Paramabo, in Surinam. With engravings

Richard Philips, London 1820 - First edition, slim 8vo, pp. [4], 106; frontispiece map, 6 aquatint plates by Neele & Son after sketches by R. Stennett; near fine, sound copy in 20th century half brown morocco by Morrell, gilt-paneled spine, t.e.g. Issued as no. six of volume II of Phillips's series of Modern Voyages and Travels. "The author was a surgeon assigned to the naval hospital in Barbados in 1807 and later to a war vessel cruising through the islands. He spent about four years in Caribbean service and became thoroughly familiar with colonial society. His book presents an interesting picture of the rushing business conducted by the slave traders in Barbados on the eve of abolition and gives accounts of encounters with the Spanish and French during the course of the Napoleonic wars. The author saw little that was attractive in West Indian life and was greatly shocked by the general prevalence of immorality" (Ragatz, Guide For The Study Of British Caribbean History 1763-1834, p. 235).       Ink and watercolour drawing (Very Good, margins slightly age-toned with tiny tears) 20 x 28,5 cm (7.9 x 10.8 inches) - [England, circa 1820-1830]. An unusual small early 19th century manuscript map with annotations shows the alleged location of St. Paul’s shipwreck, discussed in Acts of the Saints. - An interesting small format manuscript map, shows St. Paul’s Bay (San Pawl il-Ba?ar) in the Northern region of Malta, with pointed directions of the shipwreck of St. Paul. The author described the terrain with interpretation of the texts from Acts of Saints 27:14 and 27:41: Euroclydon or N. E. wind which blew when S. Paul was drifted into S. Pauls Bay. Acts 27. 14. (i.e. But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.) and: The Sea rushing in from the N.E. strikes against the outer point of a small island which causes it to divide, and meet again at the inner points in a small bay, where any Seamen would run his ship if in distress, and unable to get off the Sand. Acts 27. 41.(i.e. And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.) St. Paul's ship allegedly crushed in a bay of the island of Malta, after being carried there by ocean currents. The search of the shipwreck is one of the great enduring quests of Biblical archaeology.

An essay on the construction of wheel-carriages, as they affect both the roads and the horses; with suggestions relating to the principles on which tolls ought to be imposed, and a few remarks on the formation of roads.

London: J. and A. Arch; Baldwin and Co. and Harding; and T.J. Manchee, Bristol. 1820. 8vo., (6) + (v) - viii + 137 + (1)pp., including an ornamental dedication leaf (to the Marquis of Lansdown), a few woodcuts in the text including a rather nice cut of a coach and four, signs of an erasure on blank verso of title with a small brown mark showing on recto, but generally a very good crisp copy bound in boards sometime in the 20th century, spine lettered. First edition. Fry was from the well-known family firm of Bristol carriage builders and was closely related to the Quaker Fry's chocolate company. In his Essay> he provides useful detail on the construction of carriages, load bearing, and weight/load ratios. He evidently opposed the use of broad and conical wheels, preferring to increase the number of wheels per vehicle. He notes the great advantages of springs for comfortable suspension.
