Paris, J.B. Baillière, 1820-1851. 4 volumes. Folio (430 x 300mm). pp. viii, 402; (4), xvi, 1-184 (60 pages of 96 bis), 260, (22, explication des planches), (2, errata); (4); (4), with 248 engraved plates, apart from a few plain anatomical key plates, all printed in colour and finished by hand. Later, brown half morocco, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lettering, top edges gilt. An attractive uniformly bound Large Paper copy of one of the rarest and most beautiful conchological works. "Posterity is grateful to Férussac for some of the most beautiful and accurate coloured figures of non-marine molluscs ever published" (Dance p. 91). It is also the last and one of the finest examples of French colour-printing by Langlois, the printer responsible for some of Redouté's finest work./The work had a long and complicated publishing history with the result that few copies are found complete. The first 28 parts, by Férussac, appeared between 1820 and 1832, containing 162 plates and 128 pages of text. In 1838 another six instalments were issued by Deshayes. The death of the publisher and departure of Deshayes to Algeria again brought the work to a halt. In 1848 Baillière acquired the stock and plates and convinced Deshayes that a work of such beauty and scientific importance could not remain unfinished. Eight more instalments were published. Deshayes is responsible for the greater part of the text and 85 plates./The colour-printing and handcolouring were executed under supervision of Langlois and after his death by his pupil and successor, Geny-Gros, the plates were drawn by the finest natural history artists in France at the time: Bessa, Huet, Prêtre, and Riocreux. Baillière in his "Avertissement de l'éditeur' tells how as a consequence of the 1848 Revolution the most outstanding natural history artists could not find employment, apart from his work. Our copy has a plain plate 127AB which was not present in other copies we sold in the past./ /B.M.(N.H.) II, 569; Nissen ZBI, 1348.

Suite du mémoire sur les intégrales définies

Paris: l'Imprimerie Royal, 1820. First edition. An important contribution to the foundation of complex function theory. In this paper Possion was the first to carry out integration along a path in the complex plane. "Poisson noted in 1815 and discussed in [this paper] the use of integrals of complex functions taken over paths in the complex plane. As an example he gives ∫dx/x from -1 to 1. Here he sets x=eiθ, where θ runs from (2n+1)Ï€ to 0, and obtaines, by treating the integral as a limit of a sum, the value -(2n+1)Ï€i. Then he notes that the value of an integral need not be the same when taken over an imaginary path as when over a real path. He gives the example ∫(cos ax)/(b2+ x2) dx from -∞ to ∞, where a and b are positive constants. He lets x = t ik, where k is constant and positive, and obtaines the value & Five memoires in: Journal de l'École Royale Polytechnique, vol. 11. pp. 1-188; 295-341; 342-410; 411-416; 417-489. The complete volume offered [IV,492 pp. and 1 plate - not belonging to the mentioned memoires]. Nice contemporary half calf with gilt spine lettering. Completely clean throughout. Between 1818 and 1821, the French chemists Pelletier and Caventou isolated a number of alkaloids from plants, including strychnine (1818), brucine and veratrine (1819), cinchonine and quinine (1820) and caffeine (1821). "The discovery of quinine was by far the most dramatic result of their collaboration, and soon there was worldwide demand for quinine as a therapeutic agent. In a letter written to the Academy of Sciences in 1827, Pelletier and Caventou pointed out that by 1826 a burgeoning French industry was annually producing approximately 90,000 ounces of quinine sulfate from cinchona bark, enough to treat more than a million individuals" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).

Fine Autograph Music Quotation Signed of 22 bars on two staves, oblong 4to, n.p., November 24, 1845

Very Good. The quotation is noted in 2/4 time in C major with treble and bass clefs but may be a trio (of which Gyrowetz composed many) rather than a piano work, and appears to be complete in itself. Signed, in the lower right, "Adal Gyrowetz." Gyrowetz was a prolific composer in many forms, adhering to a traditional style. He was a friend of both Mozart and Haydn, and a pallbearer at Beethoven's funeral. His music is still performed and recorded. As a composer, conductor and teacher he played an important role in Viennese musical society into the 1820's and was honored to have been one of the pallbearers at the funeral of his friend and close contemporary, Ludwig van Beethoven. He retired in 1831, but lived on until 1850. He remarked shortly before his death in an article published in the Ostdeutsche Post that he was, "only a talented man who can be happy if he conquers the present; only a genius lives beyond the grave." There is an ink inscription in another hand at the top of the page, giving the date of Gyrowetz's death as August 1849. A rare and interesting autograph.

This female Bimacualed Teal, also known as Bikal Teal, is expertly hand-colored with intricate plumage in rich brown shades, with white detailing and a green wing flank. Selby’s contributions to British Ornithology were rivaled only by those of John Gould, and yet his images were on a larger scale and less purely scientific, exhibiting Selby's distinctive and charming style. nBorn in Northumberland and educated at University College, Oxford, Selby was a landowner and squire with ample time to devote to the study of the plant and animal life at his country estate, Twizell House. As a boy, he had studied the habits of local birds, drawn them, and learned how to preserve and set up specimens. Later, Selby became an active member of several British natural history societies and contributed many articles to their journals. Although Selby was interested in botany and produced a "History of British Trees" in 1842, he is best known for his "Illustrations of British Ornithology," printed in 1820, the first attempt to produce a set of life-sized illustrations of British birds, remarkable for their naturalism and the delicacy of their execution. Issued in nineteen parts over thirteen years, the book consisted of 89 plates of land birds and 129 plates of water birds, engraved by William Lizars of Edinburgh.

Shade of a Dandy. Original pen & ink caricature of an early 19th century man, whose shadow suggests a Kangaroo.

Ca 1820 - An intriguing item. The hand-penned caption below entitles it "Shade of a Dandy", the caricature poking fun of the ridiculousness of the gentleman, with his frizzy hairstyle, pointed nose and chin, holding a monocle. He stands in the corner of a room and the shadow he casts on the wall looks like a kangaroo with a suggestion of a halter. The image seems to be inspired by the anecdote related in James Boswell's book "Life of Johnson" where he describes Dr. Samuel Johnson in 1793 hopping around the room to explain to people how a kangaroo moved. The room has flower-decorated floor covering, a border around the wall, which also has a framed landscape hanging, and a window with drapes behind him. Kangaroos have held a long fascination for the Northern hemisphere, particularly after their arrival on English shores with Joseph Banks fresh from Cook's first voyage in 1769. The man's cut of coat and slim trousers suggest an early 19th century style. 7x10" on paper 8 x 10 3/8". With some later faintly bizarre coloring on the figure of the man, in either pastel or crayon. Mounted on a larger sheet of blue paper, perhaps from an early album. Blue backing sheet with a closed tear, otherwise in very good condition.

Michael Garlick, Halifax - Undated but estimated to be circa 1820. Such a Hymn Book you have now before you. It is not so large as to be either cumbersome or expensive: and it is large enough to contain such a variety of Hymns, as will not soon be worn threadbare." 570pp with an engraved frontis portrait of John Wesley. Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Göttingen, 4. Juni 1820.. 3 SS. 4to. Was macht die Tonkunst?

View of the Country from Urshalun Teeba

Rodwell & Martin, London 1820 - A fine example of a view taken during the first recorded journey by Europeans through the Himalayas. On 18 June 1815 Fraser and his brother William reached Urshalun, near to where the Nepalese General Kirti Rana had surrendered. Three days later James celebrated his 32nd birthday by climbing the peak, Tiba, behind the village. In 1815, following the end of the war with Nepal, Fraser and his brother William, a political agent, spent two months on a tour of the Himalayas. Their journey took the brothers along the river valleys of the Himalayas, with occasional sorties to higher latitudes and as far as the sources of both the Jumna and Ganges rivers. This view is from the spectacular Views in the Himala Mountains which contains twenty of Havell's masterly plates worked up from sketches made on the spot by Fraser. In style the plates are similar to, and very much a match for Henry Salt's and the Daniell brothers' large scale views published 10 and 20 years earlier. This was a deliberate strategy by the publishers who drew attention to the similarities in their advertisements which describe the work as being `In Elephant Folio, uniform with Daniell's Oriental Scenery , and Salt's Views in Abyssinia .' Cf. Abbey Travel II, 498. Hand-coloured aquatint by Robert Havell & Son, after Fraser.
