Fine Autograph Music Quotation Signed of 22 bars on two staves, oblong 4to, n.p., November 24, 1845

Very Good. The quotation is noted in 2/4 time in C major with treble and bass clefs but may be a trio (of which Gyrowetz composed many) rather than a piano work, and appears to be complete in itself. Signed, in the lower right, "Adal Gyrowetz." Gyrowetz was a prolific composer in many forms, adhering to a traditional style. He was a friend of both Mozart and Haydn, and a pallbearer at Beethoven's funeral. His music is still performed and recorded. As a composer, conductor and teacher he played an important role in Viennese musical society into the 1820's and was honored to have been one of the pallbearers at the funeral of his friend and close contemporary, Ludwig van Beethoven. He retired in 1831, but lived on until 1850. He remarked shortly before his death in an article published in the Ostdeutsche Post that he was, "only a talented man who can be happy if he conquers the present; only a genius lives beyond the grave." There is an ink inscription in another hand at the top of the page, giving the date of Gyrowetz's death as August 1849. A rare and interesting autograph.

        Plate LV, Bimaculated Teal, Female

London 1820 - Prideaux John Selby (1788-1867) created some of the most memorable bird images of the 19th century. This expertly hand-colored copperplate engraving, Plate LV, Bimaculated Teal, Female, from his work “Illustrations of British Ornithology,” measures 21.25” x 25.75” and is in mint condition. This female Bimacualed Teal, also known as Bikal Teal, is expertly hand-colored with intricate plumage in rich brown shades, with white detailing and a green wing flank. Selby’s contributions to British Ornithology were rivaled only by those of John Gould, and yet his images were on a larger scale and less purely scientific, exhibiting Selby's distinctive and charming style. nBorn in Northumberland and educated at University College, Oxford, Selby was a landowner and squire with ample time to devote to the study of the plant and animal life at his country estate, Twizell House. As a boy, he had studied the habits of local birds, drawn them, and learned how to preserve and set up specimens. Later, Selby became an active member of several British natural history societies and contributed many articles to their journals. Although Selby was interested in botany and produced a "History of British Trees" in 1842, he is best known for his "Illustrations of British Ornithology," printed in 1820, the first attempt to produce a set of life-sized illustrations of British birds, remarkable for their naturalism and the delicacy of their execution. Issued in nineteen parts over thirteen years, the book consisted of 89 plates of land birds and 129 plates of water birds, engraved by William Lizars of Edinburgh.

Shade of a Dandy. Original pen & ink caricature of an early 19th century man, whose shadow suggests a Kangaroo.

Ca 1820 - An intriguing item. The hand-penned caption below entitles it "Shade of a Dandy", the caricature poking fun of the ridiculousness of the gentleman, with his frizzy hairstyle, pointed nose and chin, holding a monocle. He stands in the corner of a room and the shadow he casts on the wall looks like a kangaroo with a suggestion of a halter. The image seems to be inspired by the anecdote related in James Boswell's book "Life of Johnson" where he describes Dr. Samuel Johnson in 1793 hopping around the room to explain to people how a kangaroo moved. The room has flower-decorated floor covering, a border around the wall, which also has a framed landscape hanging, and a window with drapes behind him. Kangaroos have held a long fascination for the Northern hemisphere, particularly after their arrival on English shores with Joseph Banks fresh from Cook's first voyage in 1769. The man's cut of coat and slim trousers suggest an early 19th century style. 7x10" on paper 8 x 10 3/8". With some later faintly bizarre coloring on the figure of the man, in either pastel or crayon. Mounted on a larger sheet of blue paper, perhaps from an early album. Blue backing sheet with a closed tear, otherwise in very good condition.

Michael Garlick, Halifax - Undated but estimated to be circa 1820.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Göttingen, 4. Juni 1820.. 3 SS. 4to. Was macht die Tonkunst?

View of the Country from Urshalun Teeba

Rodwell & Martin, London 1820 - A fine example of a view taken during the first recorded journey by Europeans through the Himalayas. On 18 June 1815 Fraser and his brother William reached Urshalun, near to where the Nepalese General Kirti Rana had surrendered. Three days later James celebrated his 32nd birthday by climbing the peak, Tiba, behind the village. In 1815, following the end of the war with Nepal, Fraser and his brother William, a political agent, spent two months on a tour of the Himalayas. Their journey took the brothers along the river valleys of the Himalayas, with occasional sorties to higher latitudes and as far as the sources of both the Jumna and Ganges rivers. This view is from the spectacular Views in the Himala Mountains which contains twenty of Havell's masterly plates worked up from sketches made on the spot by Fraser. In style the plates are similar to, and very much a match for Henry Salt's and the Daniell brothers' large scale views published 10 and 20 years earlier. This was a deliberate strategy by the publishers who drew attention to the similarities in their advertisements which describe the work as being `In Elephant Folio, uniform with Daniell's Oriental Scenery , and Salt's Views in Abyssinia .' Cf. Abbey Travel II, 498. Hand-coloured aquatint by Robert Havell & Son, after Fraser.

Set of Four Shooting Prints, [Plate 1] Shooting, Going Out, [Plate 2] Shooting, Game Found, [Plate 3] Shooting, Dogs brought the Game, and reloading, [Plate 4] Shooting, Refreshing

1820 - A handsome set of four shooting prints aquatinted by S. Himley after paintings by the celebrated sporting artist Dean Wolstenholme. Around 1820, S. Himley produced two sets of hunting aquatints after skilled paintings by Wolstenholme. These sets, expertly engraved in aquatint, were comprised of four plates illustrating shooting, and four plates depicting coursing. As with many of the prints after Wolstenholme's paintings it is difficult to decipher whether Himley's works reproduced paintings by Dean Wolstenhome Snr. or by his son Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. The Wolstenholme's were both talented sporting artists who earned a reputation as skilled animal painters. Both father and son exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and garnered countless commissions from eager enthusiasts. They specialized in fine hunting scenes and had a natural flare for depicting movement, which lends their work an animation and life, which is truly compelling. This stunning set of four shooting prints is rarely found as a complete set and is a wonderful example of English sporting art at its best. Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints 286-313, 364. Colour printed aquatints heightened with gum arabic. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on the bottom margin. Four puncture holes on left margin where it was bound together. Plate 1, has some very minor foxing in margins. Image size: 9 ¾ x 12 5/8 inches.

Autograph Transcription of his poem "Abelard to Eloise"

n.p. [New York, ca. 1820]. 12mo. 2 pp. on recto and verso of single sheet. Inlaid, very good . A very rare autograph of the New York poet (1795-1820), author of "The Culprit Fay," literary collaborator and friend of Fitzgreen Halleck under their penname "The Croakers," and member of the "Knickerbocker group" which included Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryan, et al. Only one autograph of any sort has appeared at auction in the past 35 years, at the Bradley Martin Sale in 1990. This particular poem remained unpublished, in fact, until it was reproduced in facsimile in James Grant Wilson's BRYANT, AND HIS FRIENDS: SOME REMINISCENCES OF THE KNICKERBOCKER WRITERS in 1886. Beneath this is a second manuscript poem in a different hand, beginning "I chased from the dew moisten'd breast of a rose," with a pencilled note "in the handwriting of Frank R. Tillou (?), brother-in-law of J.R.D"

        Monsr. J. Isabey's Exhibition Rooms, 61 Pall Mall / Salle d'Exhibition de J. Isabey, a Londres

Published by J. Isabey 1820 - A fascinating view of J. Isabey's picture gallery in Pall Mall, London, by the celebrated American engraver William James Bennett. William James Bennett was born in England, and received his artistic training at the celebrated Royal Academy. He garnered a reputation as an accomplished watercolourist and exhibited many fine landscapes at the Academy's annual exhibitions. Bennett was one of the principle members of the Society of Painters in Watercolours and helped establish watercolour as a prominent medium in England. He displayed an exceptional talent at aquatint and during his career produced many fine prints for some the most lavish English plate books. He emigrated to the United States in 1826, and is best known for his views of American cities, including the Hudson Valley Region, Niagara Falls, and numerous port cities such as New York, Charleston, and Buffalo. Bennett's series of views of American Cities set a standard, and established a compositional formula, for topographical art in America. His views remain the most memorable and beautiful examples of the genre, and they exerted a lasting influence on generations of American artists. This beautiful image of Mr. Isabey's exhibition rooms in Pall Mall is not listed separately amongst Bennett's work, but according to DeSilva and Deak, he completed a number of aquatints in 1820, which are not recorded. It is possible that this picturesque interior scene is one of the images, which was not immediately attributed to Bennett. This charming work closely resembles images published by the leading English printseller Rudolph Ackermann, in particular an image depicting his gallery "The Repository of Arts". As in the Ackermann image, connoisseurs are shown enjoying the exhibition rooms in Isabey's gallery. Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) was a French artist and what might be called "artistic entrepreneur". He managed to become Marie Antoinette's artist in residence for miniatures. Later, he designed Napoleon and Josephines and drawings in London of his own work and others. The exhibition should have been more successful than it was, but it coincided with George IV's divorce, during which most British aristocrats fled to their country estates. Deak, William James Bennett p. 3-26; DeSilva, William James Bennett: Painter and Engraver , p. 39-42. Colour-printed aquatint. Printed on wove Whatman paper watermarked 1820. In excellent condition. Image size: 7 ¼ x 9 7/8 inches.

Wollstonecraft, D. Wordsworth, M. Shelley and the Bronte sisters (Oxford Companion to English Literature, p. 843). Recent research, however, has firmly established that six of these thirteen novels, each possessing a "confident-seeming literary style, and broad evangelical emphasis" (Garside) were, in fact, written by Mrs. Elizabeth B. Lester, of whom, alas, little is known. An extremely rare book with only eight copies located in OCLC and KVK, no auction records, and scarce in the marketplace.Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1820: 45. Good. The first printing of the first two volumes of a set that would eventually stretch to twelve volumes and cover the years up to 1871. Of obvious New World importance, this collection contains information from many treaties, including the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812, and a commercial treaty with the United States of 1815. Several of the treaties deal with the suppression of the slave trade, a frequent component of most British treaties of the early 19th century. The treaties are listed in order by nation, and then chronologically. SABIN 31954 (note).

80 pages, including pastedown wrappers. Wood-engraved frontispiece and illustrated throughout with 29 woodcuts and 2 typemetal decorations and a small woodcut device at close. 32mo. Original plain sugar-paper wrappers, with later [1820] ownership inscription. Item 65 in Alderson & Moon Childhood Recollected, where only 27 woodcuts are noted. Little Goody Goosecap was originally known as The Orphan (1780), being the publisher John Marshall's attempt to emulate the huge success of John Newbery's Goody Two-Shoes. Around 1790 Marshall changed the name of The Orphan to The Entertaining History of Little Goody Goosecap. It is believed that Bassam was the first to use this name, disguising his piracy of the Marshall title.
