Don Juan

Thomas Davidson, 3000, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fair Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust JacketFour Volumes of this epic in similar original bindings - blue boards with a cream tape spine strip. Not complete. Volume 1 comprises Cantos I and II - printed in 1820 by Thomas Davidson. The next volume comprises Cantos VI to VIII - printed for John Hunt in 1823. The next volume comprises Cantos XII to XIV and was also printed for John Hunt in 1823. The final volume we hold comprises Cantos XII to XV and XVI - printed for John and H. L. Hunt in 1824. Condition of all four volumes is similar. Boards are marked, bumped and rubbed. Except in the case of volume IV, spine strips are extensively lost, and the latter is well worn. Some foxing, particularly to end papers. Page foredges uncut. Consideration will be given to a requirement to split this set. Note that this is the middle sized (small 8vo) of the three formats that were printed at this time by these printers, and is scarce. The first volume is likely to be a 2nd printing, but the others are firsts. Size: 8vo - over 7? - 9?" tall. Item Type: Book. Category: Poetry; Inventory No: 003350.

Extraits de l'Examen Critique du Militaire Française,

École de Saumur, , 1820. suivi des Principes qui doivent déterminer sa Constitution, sa Discipline et son Instruction. 3 volumes in 2, octavo (183 × 115 mm). Contemporary full calf , flat spines, red morocco title- and numbering-pieces, compartments gilt alternately with repeated quatrefoil tools and a large vase device, boards panelled with a vine leaf roll with in a plain rule and hatched roll. 15 well-executed, full-page pen and ink drawings. Slightly worn, now skilfully restored, boards somewhat scratched and a gilt supralibros removed, light browning, occasional foxing, else very good, remains attractive. Neatly written and clearly legible manuscript copy of Bohan's important and uncommon work. Originally published in Geneva 1781, "The third volume, including some extracts of the other two was reprinted Paris 1821 under the title of 'Principes pour monter et dresser les chevaux de guerre.'" (Huth) The revision was carried out by the astronomer Joseph-Jérôme de la Lande, a friend of Bohan's. It is possible that this manuscript relates to this later revision, produced at l'École d'Instruction des Troupes à Cheval at Saumur it similarly reproduces sections of Volume I and II together with the entirety of Volume III. The signature appended to the title pages has in most cases been deliberately defaced, but that of Vol. III reads "Bussière, M. d. E., chef," perhaps Maître d'Equitation? The substantial third volume is entirely concerned with the selection, training and management of horses, particularly in the military context. A handsome manuscript copy of an uncommon text.

        Swiss Scenery

London : Rodwell & Martin 1820 - 4to. engraved title vignette, vii, 200 p., 60 pl : ill. ; 30 cm. Bound in contemporary 3/4 red Moroccan leather. Gilt lettering to spine. Marbled boards. 5 raised bands. TEG. Marbled endpages. Good binding and cover. Wear to extremities. Slight soiling to spine. Small start to boards at head of spine. Clean, unmarked pages. Scattered foxing. Pg135 slightly loose. Toning to verso of some plates. BRYAN, Vol.I, p.308; Perret II/1042; Wäber BSL III/58. James Pattison Cockburn was an artist, author and military officer. After the Napoleonic Wars were over, Cockburn went to stay on the Continent more frequently, working for William Bernard Cooke, an English engraver and publisher. After a tour in Naples and Pompeii, he proceeded north to Northern Italy and the Swiss Alps in the period 1816?22. He produced drawings in sepia as he moved from place to place in the Alps and elsewhere in Italy and Switzerland: vast panoramas and mountain passes figured alongside scenes of streets and market places. The wealth of pictures is explained not only by Cockburn?s mastery of technical means but also, according to the German composer, Louis Spohr, by his use of ?a machine that projected the landscape, in reduced scale, on paper.? Although it is not certain that Spohr was referring to a camera lucida, the sharpness of the images in several sketches done at the time he made his remark in some measure substantiates this hypothesis, if true, it marks the first work of art using the camera lucida. Leipzig, Carl Cnobloch, 1820. 8vo. pp. viii, 611, with 8 folding engraved plates. Contemporary half calf. Stafleu & Cowan 992. First edition. The first three parts (Nomenclature, Theory of Classification, Descriptive Botany) are extracted from De Candolle's 'Théorie élémentaire de la Botanique'. The remaining part is by Sprengel, by whom the whole was edited in German. The translation did not meet with Candolle's approval: 'M. Sprengel, qui unissant dans l'ouvrage ses idée aux miennes, et dans le titre son nom au mien, en fit un livre vraiment absurde'.

CABINET OF USEFUL ARTS AND MANUFACTURES; DESIGNED FOR THE PERUSAL

1820. [JUVENILE -- OCCUPATIONS]. THE CABINET OF USEFUL ARTS & MANUFACTURES; DESIGNED FOR THE PERUSAL OF YOUNG PERSONS. Dublin: Printed by Christopher Bentham, 19 Eustace-street, 1820. First edition. 10 full-page wood- engraved illustrations, plus tailpieces. vii, [9]-180 pp. The full page illustrations are included in the pagination. Except for two plates illustrating important resources (the beaver and the seal), the plates represent trades. 12mo., 13.5 x 9 cm. In a scruffy, contemporary binding of rustic appearance: worn and soiled gray paper over chipped, scabbard boards, with a leather backstrip laid down. The front hinge is split but the bookblock is sound. Contemporary ink ownership ("Isaac Brown, Jan 1st, 1825") on reverse of frontispiece and some juvenile pencil squiggles in a few margins. Scattered, light foxing and a few creased corners throughout the text leaves. Manufacturing trades are represented by glass, porcelain, linen, rope-making, wool, silk, hats, leather, paper, sugar, and salt, while the useful arts are represented by printing calico, founding type, letterpress printing, and book binding. Coming at the end of the volume, and seeming to fall somewhere between a useful art and manufacturing, is brewing. A rare first edition of this title (OCLC first search lists only 10 copies), with later editions over the following decade printed at Dublin, London, and New York. (Osbourne Collection, p. 110: Dublin, Thos. Courtney, 1821; Kress C.1389: Dublin, W. Folds & Son, 1825).

Autograph Manuscript on Oersted's discovery of electro-magnetism

      Geneva, 1820.
[La Rive, Gaspard de (1770-1834)] Electro-Magnetisme-titre general pour les l[ivres] nouveaux. Umrisse zu den &c. [Review of Umrisse zu den physischen verhaltnissen des von Herrn Professor Oersted entdeckten elektro-chemischen Magnetismus (1821), by Paul Erman (1764-1851)] Incomplete autograph manuscript draft, consisting of the title, the first two paragraphs and a good portion of the third. 2 pp. 277 x 190 mm. Written chiefly on the left column of a sheet folded into two columns, allowing for revisions. Creased where previously folded, small dampstain in lower corner, one upper corner a little chipped, but otherwise very good.

An intriguing autograph manuscript review of Paul Erman's Umrisse zu den physischen verhaltnissen des von Herrn Professor Oersted entdeckten elektro-chemischen Magnetismus (1821), reflecting the extraordinary ferment in physical science aroused by the recent discoveries of Oersted, Ampère, Arago and others re the relationship of electricity and magnetism. The review was written for the Bibliothèque Universelle, Geneva's foremost scientific and literary review, by Gaspard de la Rive, an editor of this journal and himself a physicist and experimenter in electrical science whose work is summarized in the D.S.B.; he is best known for his defense and helpful criticism of Ampère's theory of magnetism. The present review focuses on the work of Paul Erman, professor of physics at the University of Berlin and perpetual secretary of Berlin's Royal Academy. The review is certainly closely connected with Ampère's work, and, according to Ampère's most recent biographer, James R. Hofmann, the account of Erman's experiments contained in it influenced Ampère's investigations of induction in July 1821, in which he very nearly anticipated Faraday's landmark discovery of electromagnetic induction a decade later. The third paragraph of La Rive's work may be translated as follows: The apparatus used in M. Erman's experiments is very ingenious; it bears some resemblance to that which we described [in] Bib. Univ. vol. 16 s. 119. It is the same principle of action, whose effects the author renders more obvious by suspending the entire apparatus from a wire, in such a way that one can make it move by presenting magnets on either its right or its left side; one thus observes the rotation movements printed on a voltaic [carde?] by one or the other pole of a bar magnet. He makes use of a silver or copper crucible, in which he places a small amount of zinc, isolated by means of a watch-glass; the chain between the zinc and copper is formed by a band of zinc. . . . The first sentence in the above paragraph refers to La Rive's own "flotteur électrique," a simple device demonstrating the action of a magnet on a simple current loop, which was first described in La Rive's "Notices sur quelques expériences électro-magnétiques" published in Vol. 16 of the Bibliothèque Universelle (1821). Hofmann, in his account of Ampère's July 1821 induction experiments, notes the influence of both Erman and La Rive on Ampère's work:

An interesting experiment by Paul Erman caught Ampère's eye when it was reported in the Bibliothèque Universelle early in 1821 [i.e. most probably in the published review of which we are offering the manuscript draft]. . . . Erman had used a bar magnet detector in his own experiment; Ampère would use bar magnets in 1821. . . . Similarly, in March, 1821, Gaspard de La Rive had used a bar magnet to demonstrate attractions and repulsions of a vertical current loop. Consequently, by early in 1821 Ampère was thoroughly familiar with apparatus in which steady currents in vertical current loops were rotated using magnets (Hofmann, André-Marie Ampère, [1995] pp. 284-85).

Earlier in his review La Rive notes that Erman wrote his work after Oersted's discovery of electromagnetism (spring 1820), but before learning of the researches of Ampère and Arago that began the following September. He refers to Ampère's discovery of the relationship of current-flow to magnetism (1820) as "le fait nouveau et singulier decouvert par M. Ampère, . . . [qui] fournit en supposent dans l'aguille magnetique des courrans de meme nature, une explication claire simple et satisfaisant de la plupart des phenomenes electro-magnetiques" [the new and singular fact discovered by M. Ampère, . . . [which], supposing that the currents in a magnetic needle are of the same nature, provides a clear, simple and satisfying explanation of most electromagnetic phenomena].

Study of the bibliography of Ampère's writings published by Hofmann confirms that in 1821 Ampère published 8 papers, of which no less than 5 appeared in La Rive's Bibliothèque Universelle des Sciences, Belles-lettres et Arts. One of these was entitled "Lettre de M. Ampère à M. Erman . . . ." Another paper published slightly later in the year was entitled "Extrait d'une lettre de Mr. Ampère au Prof. De La Rive". This manuscript fragment, representing certainly a major portion of La Rive's review, was preserved in a Victorian album of 120 autographs by scientists and explorers we recently acquired. It was the first document preserved in the album, and was misidentified by the member of the Paget family who put the album together. Why this particular leaf was preserved without its conclusion will remain a mystery. A complete transcription and translation of the document is attached.

The history of Hindostan, its arts, and its sciences, as connected with the history of the other great empires of Asia, during the most ancient periods of the world. 2nd edition.

      - London, printed by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1820.3 volumes in 2. 4to. Contemporary half calf, spines gilt (hinges sl. dam.). With 16 engraved plates (2 folding). 522; 303,337 pp.* First edition London 1795. - Thomas Maurice (1754-1824) published numerous works on the religion of India. After he had completed his extensive 'Indian Antiquities' he traced Indian history back to its classical origins. Volume I mainly gives ancient astronomical details from the Hindoo, Hebraic, Phoenician, Egyptian and Greek systems, covering the period between the creation and the flood. Volume II contains the Sanskrit and classical history of India. The imaginative curious plates are showing the Indian Deitees (incarnations of Veeshnu, Creeshna etc.) but also the ancient zodiac from Egypt, oriental zodiac, the 28 Hindoo lunar mansions. The plates are mainly facsimiles of the mythological designs and as Maurice says in his advertisement 'Absurd as some of them may appear to an European eye, it appeared still more absurd attempt to make any alterations in them'. - (Some staining). THE YOUNG SPORTSMAN'S INSTRUCTOR

London: Apollo Press, 1820. n. Hardcover. A Miniature Sporting Book in Appropriately Decorated Morocco. 83 x 57 mm (3 1/4 x 2 1/4"). 3 p.l., 136 pp., [1] leaf (blank before title excised, perhaps to remove previous ownership mark). EXQUISITE CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY THOMAS GOSDEN, covers intricately gilt in a Grolieresque design of thick and thin fillets, interlinking strapwork, leafy flourishes, and acorn tools, all of these forming a frame enclosing a central oval with a gilt hunting horn, flat spine tooled with gilt vine forming eight rounded compartments, six with sporting equipment or an animal at center, one with the initials "G M," and one with the date "1820," turn-ins with gilt Greek key roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In an excellent later custom-made green morocco-backed clamshell box by Aquarius of London. With woodcut frontispiece showing an angler. Bondy, p. 26-27; Spielman 356A. Perhaps a breath of wear to leather, the leaves a shade less than bright and with mild offsetting, last two gatherings with slight vertical crease, but still A VERY DESIRABLE EXAMPLE, the text and the beautiful binding both clean, fresh, and generally well preserved. This delightful little book of practical advice on "Angling, Fowling, Hunting, Ordering Singing Birds, Poultry, Conies, Hares, and Dogs" comes in an apposite binding by Thomas Gosden (1780-1843), himself a sportsman. The hunting horn and the tools on the spine are identifiable as belonging to Gosden, whose work often appeared on books about angling or field sports. In addition to advice on appropriate baits for each season and methods for snaring birds and small mammals, our intriguing author includes anecdotes such as the tale of an angler who, while burying a human skull he had fished out of the water, discovered a bag of gold coins. Markham (1568?-1637) was a prolific author with dual careers: one as a poet, playwright, and translator of literary works and another as an expert on country pursuits, horsemanship, and the veterinary art. A scion of the landed gentry, his knowledge of field sports and angling was acquired by experience, and his works on these topics have always been considered more valuable than his more high-minded efforts. According to DNB, Markham's practical guides contain "a wealth of detail on many aspects of day-to-day living. For the social historian, or the re-enactor, Gervase Markham's numerous works are indispensable guides to the practicalities of Renaissance life." A miniature version of the present work was first published in the early 18th century, and the present item is a reprint of that issue. Spielman tells us our edition "is perhaps rare that the original" and notes that it is one of the "eagerly collected" publications of the noted Apollo Press. ABPC find six copies of this edition at auction since 1979.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
