Signed watercolour, captioned "Voyage de l'Uranie; Insectes pl no 15"

1820. Watercolour on sheet of laid paper, 245 x 195 mm., paper watermarked "Edmeads & Pine 1798"; modern mount. Butterflies collected on the Uranie voyage. A sheet of butterfly watercolours by Jacques Arago, depicting specimens from "Ile de France" and "Nouvelle Hollande".Jacques Arago (1790-1855) joined the Freycinet expedition in 1817 and was not only the most accomplished of the artists who made the voyage, but was one of the most intriguing of all the early voyagers. The wonders of the voyage stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he continued writing and drawing increasingly fanciful depictions of the Pacific right up until he lost his sight. He published a well-regarded account of the voyage (published in English in 1823), and wrote any number of different versions over the ensuing decades. The sheet is prepared in the usual way by Arago, including the simple line border and the reference to what seems to be a plate number in the top margin (see other examples in, for instance, the 2002 Christies sale, lot 67). A plate depicting butterflies was included in the official "Zoologie" section of the official account of the Freycinet voyage (no. 83), but none of the insects on the present sheet are included on that plate. In fact, many of Arago's watercolours of this genre, despite seeming to refer directly to a published plate, have no corresponding printed version. It is not easy to account for this (and perhaps it would be beyond the bounds of a simple acquisitions list!), but it would seem that the numbering system is uniquely Arago's own. Certainly the naturalists Quoy and Gaimard dwelt on the beauty and variety of the insects they gathered on the voyage (Zoologie, II, pp. 542-3).The central point remains obvious, however: that is, that the insects depicted here, despite clearly figuring specimens collected on the Uranie voyage, were not published in the voyage account. The watercolours therefore take on even more significance.

Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly in outer margins). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 76 from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown are painted wood carvings featuring two wooden polychrome ushabtis (funerary figurines) of Bakenkhonsou, first prophet of Amon, and a mask removed from a casket; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of these beautiful carvings. .

A Family Record - Folk Art Family tree of Lockwood Brush & Susannah Howland of Southeast and Patterson in Putnam County NY

1820.. Very good condition. Lockwood Brush (2 Jun 1794-8 Apr 1878) and Susanna Howland (7 Aug 1801-6 May 1887) were both born in Putnam County NY, Lockwood in the town of Southeast, Susanna in Patterson. They were married Jan 1, 1820. This large and beautifully decorated family record is signed on the lower right "J. Brush". The design centers on two hearts within an arch, surmounted by bowls of flowers, butterflies & a caterpillar. Beneath are columns listing the names of their children, birth dates, marriages and deaths. Trees, ivy and grass also contribute to the pleasing design. The deaths of Lockwood and Susanna are recorded on memorial pillars on either side of the heart. The style of the artwork suggests that this was created as a wedding gift in 1820. Names and dates were carefully added by different hands throughout the years, the first date Lockwood's birth in 1794 and the last date entered being May 6th 1887, at Susanna's death. The 1820 Federal Census lists four Brush family households living in Southeast- John P. Brush is most likely the father; Lockwood who is newly married; Platt Brush and John Brush. This artwork could have been created by his father or brother, both named John, or possibly an unnamed sister, as women were not named in the Federal census before 1850. The Brush family cemetery is in Brewster, NY. The artwork measures approximate 17 1/2 x 22", in a period dark wood frame with gilt inner filet measuring 22 1/4 x 26 3/4". There is a very negligible amount of brown spotting on the lower right corner. Not examined outside of the frame. In lovely condition, the colors bright. A remarkable survival of 19th century Putnam County New York.

Stuttgart: Friedrich G. Schutz, 1820. Handcoloured paper globe comprising six gores measuring 170 x 65 mm., wonderfully preserved with the original cord ties within the publisher's folding card case with printed onlays; accompanied by a folding suite of 15 handcoloured lithographic plates measuring 97 x 130 mm. depicting the peoples of the Earth, and a loose engraved card sheet detailing the orbit and poles of the earth. German handcoloured globe for children. A splendid early nineteenth-century German handcoloured paper globe, here offered complete with the original publisher's ensemble containing a folding suite of 15 plates depicting native peoples of the earth and other educational aids. Two of the plates depict Australian Aboriginal subjects. The globe and its accompaniments are a fine example of late enlightenment publishing for the benefit of children. The publisher Schutz states his plan for a novel educational aid 'to facilitate the introduction and use of geographic education in schools about the nature and classification of the earth'. By presenting the countries of the world as a readily assembled globe to be handled by children, abstract geographical concepts could be grasped with relative ease. The paper globe is significant for the information that accompanies it, especially the suite of 15 folding plates illustrating the peoples of the world. Geographers and ethnologists of the early nineteenth-century were fascinated by the relationship between race, climate and environment. In this wonderful package Schutz presents the regions of the earth as a paper globe alongside skilfully lithographed depictions of its peoples. In this way geographical space is linked to costumes and appearances in a manner comprehensible for children. Two of the plates depict Australian Aborigines, one from Van Diemen's Land and the other from New Holland (specifically, Western Australia), who is curiously illustrated with a bow and arrow. The Pacific Islands are represented by a Tahitian warrior in a tapa wrap brandishing an axe.In addition to the paper globe and folding plates, the folding case contains a loose handcoloured engraved card sheet with several diagrams explaining the orbit and poles of the earth. The card is printed on both sides and includes delicate engravings of the sun's orbit and the relationship between the tilt of the earth and her seasons. The card is attached to a printed letterpress sheet elucidating the diagrams in further detail. This example is a rarity, here offered complete in the original publisher's folding case with four detailed letterpress onlays. A folding flap protecting the ethnological portraits features a further fine lithographic plate titled "Künstlicher erd Globus" (reproduction earth globe). This lithograph is a humorous composite, featuring amongst other figures an Ottoman maiden reclining on a divan facing an African beauty flanked by a lion and a crocodile. Paper children's globes are rare by their very nature, and this example preserved in its complete, original condition is an unusual survival.

Broadside. Begins, "Of all the strange and unaccountable things which have appeared during the present electioneering campaign, the Federal Bucktail Address, which has lately been put into circulation is the most so."

New York state: no publisher/printer Folio (34 cm, 12.75"). [1] f. (verso blank).. 1820 A wall posting of the Democratic-Republican party supporting incumbent DeWitt Clinton for Governor of New York in the 1820 elections against Vice-President Daniel D. Tompkins, the candidate of the Tammany-Virginia wing of the party. The document is a direct reply to the anti-Clinton Federal Bucktail Address (signed on 14 April 1820) and its signatories, a group of 40 men known as the "high-minded Federalists." Named members include John Duer and Rufus King. Of particular interest is the author's contention that the group misrepresented the nature of their opposition to the War of 1812. Signed in type: "No Time Server. April 19th, 1820." Several lines of text at the base of the document are headed "The Seminole Federalists," an unflattering soubriquet given to the faction of Federalists who opposed the Clinton administration. This section is signed in type, "Red-Jacket. As issued, with some later folds. Inch-long tear within first line of text, costing one word and portions of two or three letters, without affecting sense. Tear above center fold snaking five lines of text, touching letters from seven words without costing any text. Thumbnail-sized chip in center, affecting portions of three lines and costing several complete words but little sense. Lightly foxed.

        Temple of Mangnee

Rodwell & Martin, London 1820 - Hand-coloured aquatint by Robert Havell & Son, after Fraser. A fine example of a view taken during the first recorded journey by Europeans through the Himalayas. In 1815, following the end of the war with Nepal, Fraser and his brother William, a political agent, spent two months on a tour of the Himalayas. Their journey took the brothers along the river valleys of the Himalayas, with occasional sorties to higher latitudes and as far as the sources of both the Jumna and Ganges rivers. The Temple of Mangnee was found in Uttar Pradesh, India, one of many mountain temples that deeply impressed Fraser. Each temple housed a guardian deity who protected the nearby residents. This temple was dedicated to the goddess Bhavani [a form of Shakti]. Fraser in his Journal of a Tour to the Himala Mountains wrote of the structure: "the whole of the interior is sculpted over in wood, with infinite labour.the whole roof, which is of fir wood, is richly cut into flowers and ornaments.with a sharpness and precision, yet an ease that does honour to the mountain artist. The whole setting is most beautiful." This view is from the spectacular Views in the Himala Mountains which contains twenty of Havell's masterly plates worked up from sketches made on the spot by Fraser. In style the plates are similar to, and very much a match for Henry Salt's and the Daniells' large scale views published 10 and 20 years earlier. This was a deliberate strategy by the publishers who drew attention to the similarities in their advertisements which describe the work as being `In Elephant Folio, uniform with Daniell's Oriental Scenery , and Salt's Views in Abyssinia .'         1.

The catalogue contains numerous illustrations of photographic and related equipment. Contemporary half - calf and marbled boards, rebacked; interior excellent. The rare first edition of Le Gray?s influential manual including instructions on the preparation of waxed - paper negatives, together with the greatly expanded second edition and a substantial catalogue of cameras and photographic equipment from the leading retailer of the period. No copy of the first edition is listed in either OCLC or COPAC. Le Gray (1820 - 1884), although trained as a painter, became one of the most famous early photographers. As early as 1848 he was experimenting with the use of paper for negatives. He developed a waxed - paper negative that produced sharper - focus prints. As an alternative to the glass plates used in the wet - collodion process, the dry wax - paper negative was more practical for travelers. It could be prepared days in advance and could be developed days after the photograph was taken. It also allowed for differing colorations and produced a softer, more aesthetically pleasing result than did the glass negative. ?The first of his four treatises, published in 1850, boldly?"and correctly?"asserted that ?the entire future of photography is on paper.? In that volume, Le Gray outlined a variation of William Henry Fox Talbot?s process calling for the paper negatives to be waxed prior to sensitization, thereby yielding a crisper image? (Daniel, Malcolm, Gustave Le Gray (1820?"1884), In Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, http: / / www.metmuseum.org / toah / hd / gray / hd_gray.htm. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ?Le Gray (1820 - 1884) was the central figure in early French photography,? as well as teacher to many other photographers, including Charles Nègre, Henri Le Secq, Émile Pecarrere, Olympe Aguado, Nadar, Adrien Tournachon, and Maxime Du Camp. In 1850, he took the first official photograph of a French head of state, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. He then became the family?s official photographer. A year later, Le Gray was put in charge of a team assembled by the French Commission of Historical Monuments to make a photographic inventory of French monuments. Le Gray founded the Société Héliographique, the first photographic organization in the world, and later joined the Société Française de Photographie. During the last two decades of his life, Le Gray traveled throughout the Mediterranean, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, taking photographs of world leaders and other celebrities, as well as images of various wars. Included in this work is a wonderful, very early catalogue of photographic and related equipment offered by the publishers, Lerebours and Secretan, which contains numerous illustrations plus prices of the equipment offered.

French text, 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, woodcut title vignette, 4 woodcut illustrations printed on 3 pages, 1 large folding plate of the Minerve, plus at the end 1 EXTRA folding plate (probably a facsimile) of a fantasy flying machine which seems to come from an Italian work, pages: 36, (4), bound in modern half calf over cloth sides, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, contrasting gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small blemish to upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, 2 very small repairs to edge of front endpaper, slightly foxed throughout, mostly light, the folding plate is faintly foxed at the edges, there is a small light stain at the top outer corner, a tiny piece missing from the lower corner and a very short closed edge tear at the inner edge (repaired on reverse), the unnumbered illustrated pages at the end are very faintly foxed at the edges, otherwise a very good copy. Étienne - Gaspard Robert (1763 - 1837) was a famous Belgian stage magician pioneering projection techniques for phantasmagoria shows, at the same time pursuing an academic career as professor of physics at Liege, specialising in optics. He also had vast experience with balloons - he was Commandant des Aerostiers during the war, serving under General Jourdain in Belgium and Holland in 1803 / 4, providing valuable observations on the enemy troops and movements from tethered and untethered balloon observing stations; he is also regarded by some as the inventor of the parachute. There was nothing about the balloon described in this pamphlet that would have worked, and Robertson knew it, intending his work to be more of caricature of existing attempts in flight than as a science fiction creation. The balloon was to have been one of the biggest ever designed with a 150 foot diameter for a load of 161,000 lbs including 60 scientists, plus some ladies who have their own quarters, and it was to be fitted out with a library, church, exercise area, chemistry laboratory, music room, food and wine storage, kitchen, the only place where a fire is allowed, etc. It is also provided with a small ship underneath for sea landings. The first edition which is extremely scarce was first published in Vienne, France in 1804. This is mentioned on the title page and see Tissandier, Bibliographie Aeronautique page 33.         Die Kaiserpfalz in Seligenstadt.

1820 1820 - Radierung, 1820, auf Velin. 14:19,6 cm. Literatur: G. Bergsträsser, Johann Heinrich Schilbach. Darmstadt, 1959, Druckgraphik Gr. 10. Vorzüglicher Abdruck mit breitem Rand. Sehr selten!
