A Short Account of the Voyages, Travels and Adventures of John Benson; comprising Seven Voyages to Different Parts of the World

John C. Benson, [Rhode Island] 1820 - (6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches). 120pp. Contemporary calf backed marbled paper covered boards Scarce privately published early American narrative of travels and seafaring life, including a shipwreck, capture by privateers and descriptions of slave trading. Beginning in circa 1760, Benson made seven voyages to the West Indies, Central America, & Africa, on two of which he was captured by French privateers and shipwrecked on another. His sixth voyage was aboard a slave trading ship from Newport to Sierra Leone, and includes an account of a slave insurrection aboard ship. His narrative of his voyages ends at p. 78 and is followed by "The Experience & Remarkable Vision of John Benson", an account of his life after leaving the sea. "It will be perceived, by the author's preface, that this work was to have been published during his life time. His death, which took place soon after the completion of the manuscript, prevented his design. Mr. Benson having brought his narrative . to the conclusion of his voyages; it has been thought advisable by the publisher, to give a short account of his life from the above period, to the time of his death" (Note by the publisher, p. [5]). Published by the author's son, the final 8 pages include a list of subscribers, largely from Rhode Island. It has been suggested that the work was published either in Newport or Providence, with the publication date of 1818 suggested by Shaw & Shoemaker (though a slightly later date more likely given Benson's death in December of that year). According to Wendell Phillips Garrison, in his The Benson family of Newport, Rhode Island (1872), the narrative was published "prior to 1824" by the author's son, John Casey Benson, a cotton, woollen and silk manufacturer in Worcester County, Mass. Scarce, with no examples cited in the auction records and not listed in Huntress. Shaw & Shoemaker 43283; Handler 81; Beinecke Lesser Antilles 670. Not in Huntress. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Magnificent set in full straight grain morocco, five raised bands, spines in six panels, title in gilt to second panel, volume number in the fourth, remaining panels with gilt motiff and an double fillet frame, covers with double fillet border and dentelle (matching the inner dentelle), another smaller pattern is embossed inside that, gilt hatching pattern to 1/3 of each outer edges, beautiful marbeled endpapers. All textblock edges gilt. Contents very clean. Binding and boards rock solid, no splits. It's always difficult to age-estimate these bindings, but this looks like the high-house style binding Bayntun did for Southran's, circa 1900. In any event, bindings are bright red with straight-grain morocco leather and a lots of gilt. The spines are not at all sun damaged, but have darkened evenly just a touch, very nicely matching the boards. A handsome full morocco set with excellent color.

        Photograph of Edmond de Goncourt

GONCOURT, Edmond de. Portrait for La Galerie Contemporaine by Nadar. Woodburytype print with artist's information printed on mount, matted and framed in polished dark wood. [Paris: Nadar, ND].A visually arresting portrait of Edmond de Goncourt by famed portrait photographer Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon 1820-1910). "Nadar's notoriety in photography came after successful careers first in writing and publishing and then in caricature. Nadar's turn to portrait photography appears to be a natural progression from his work in caricature." "Galerie Contemporaine, stands out due to its ambitious scope, as well as for the quality of the photographic imagery it contained. Underpinned by a certain patriotic sentiment and a more sophisticated approach to celebrity, the subtitle Litteraire Artistique declares the work's focus of interest to be high art. In fact Galerie Contemporaine evolved into the most impressive set of celebrity portraits published in nineteenth-century France, forming a vital visual record of the leading figures who shaped public life, in science and politics as well as the arts, during the Second Empire and the emergent Third Republic."

(Paris, 1820). Small 8vo. Contemporary (original?) blank blue paper wrappers. Annulated stamp to title-page, otherwise a nice, clean, and fresh copy. 68 pp. + 5 engraved plates.. First edition, in the extremely scarce off-print, of the first announcement of Ampère's seminal discoveries on electromagnetism, which laid the foundation for electrodynamics. Ampère first heard of Ørsted's discovery of electromagnetism on the 4th of September, when Arago announced Ørsted's results to the Paris Academy of Sciences. In Ørsted's experiment, a current-carrying wire is held over and under a compass needle - the result being that the needle is positioned at 45 degrees in respect to the wire. Ampére immediately saw that this result made no physical sense and realized that the true nature of the effect could not be observed until the force of terrestrial magnetism was somehow neutralized; what Ørsted had observed and reported on was the resultant of the force from the wire and that from the earth's magnetic field. Ampère discovered that the compass needle sets at 90 degrees to the current-carrying wire, when the effect of terrestial magnetism is eliminated. He also observed that current-carrying wires which are formed as spirals act as permanent magnets, and this lead him to his theory that electricity in motion produces magnetism and that permanent magnets must contain electrical currents. And thus Ampère laid the foundation of the new field of electrodynamics."Ampère, professor of mathematics at the Polytechnique, heard of Oersted's discovery and immediately set up a series of experiments to determine the exact relationships of current-flow and magnetism. In a week Ampère presented the first of a series of papers establishing the laws of forces acting between conductors carrying current." (Dibner). Ampère's seminal results were announced in a series of memoires read before the Paris Academy of Sciences in September and October 1820. These memoires were first published in the September and October issues of Arago's "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", and in November Ampère had the scarce seperate printing of his findings published under the title "Mémoires sur I'action mutuelle de deux courans électriques, sur celle qui existe entre un courant électrique et un aimant ou le globe terrestre, et celle de deux aimans I'un sur I'autre". It is this publication that is considered "his first great memoir on electrodynamics" (DSB).Sparrow: 8; Dibner: 62; Honeyman: 83; Barchas 51 (only the periodical-issue); Wheeler 762 (only the periodical-issue)

Thebes. Byban el Molouk. Statues et Fragmens de Granit Noir et de Granit Rouge Trouves dans les Tombeaux des Rois a L'Ouest, Couvercles de Vases Trouves dans les Hypogees

Paris.: Panckouke.. Ca. 1820.. Copper plate engraving (uncolored), image approx. 17 x 23 inches on sheet approximately 21 x 28 inches. Very good condition: 1/2 inch tear to mid upper edge and soft crease to upper right corner (both well outside image area), light scattered foxing (mainly in outer margins). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 81 from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown are red and black granite statues and fragments, including ushabtis (funerary figurines) and covers for canopic jars; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of these beautiful carvings. .

Rare Declaration of Independence Broadside engraved by Eleazar Huntington

Impressive Rare Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, one page, 20.25? x 24.5?. [Hartford, Connecticut, c. 1820-1824. ?Engraved by E. Huntington? at bottom center. Printed on heavy wove paper. Professionally restored including treatment of tears, minor loss, and creases. Fine appearance. Eleazar Huntington, a Hartford, Connecticut, engraver, used Benjamin O. Tyler?s 1818 facsimile as his model, a design which featured different decorative calligraphic styles in each line of the heading: ?In Congress July 4th. 1776 / Unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of / America.? The text calligraphy differs from Tyler?s as does the grouping of the signatures of the Signers. In the July 12, 1839, edition of the Hartford ?Daily Courant,? Huntington offered for sale the plate from which this broadside was printed: ?To Publishers and Booksellers. The subscriber, having changed his business, for the benefit of his health, offers for sale the following valuable Plates, (Engravings on steel and copper) connected with his late business. With the exception of those done by himself, they were generally executed by distinguished artists in excellent style; some of which are new, others are more or less worn. A fair description and valuation of each has been made for the more particular information of those who may wish to purchase. The plates, and impressions from them, can also be examined. The prices named, although no more than their real value, are not in all cases to be considered the lowest selling prices.? Listed first: ?The large Declaration of Independence, first published by B.O. Tyler, Esq. of Washington city, and engraved by P. Maverick, at $1000 ?" now valued at $300. It has been by recutting, put in good condition for printing, without injuring its original beauty; the subject, it is well known, improves by age.?John Bidwell in ?American History in Image and Text,? published in ?Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society,? Vol. 98, part 2 (October 1988), cites only three copies of Huntington?s engraving of the Declaration of Independence in institutional collections. A Huntington engraving was sold by a prominent northeast dealer in 2007 for $22,000.

Draft of an Autograph Letter to an unknown recipient, regarding the primary role of Gouverneur Morris in the conception of the Erie Canal

Staatsburg, [New York], 1820. Working draft, with numerous corrections and strike-through. 3 pp., on 2 sheets of blank stationery. Docketed on verso in the hand of Margaret Lewis (wife of Maturin Livingston) attesting that this is a "draft of my father's". 4to. A few minor chips at edges, two small closed tears, and slight discoloration; overall, very good and perfectly legible. In quarter red morocco slipcase. Gouverneur Morris: the Moving Force behind the Erie Canal Morgan Lewis was a son of Signer of The Declaration of Independence, served in the Revolution, became Governor of New York, 1804-1807 and married Robert R. Livingston's daughter. Here he speaks of the Canal : "I cheerfully comply with the request respecting the early Opinions of the late Governeur (sic) Morris on the subject of a canal communication of uniting the Water of Lake Erie and the Hudson by means of a Canal. "After the evacuation of Tyconderoga, in the Northern Campaign of 1777, the scattered forces of the Army of the North having concentrated at Fort Edward Mr. Morris arrived at Gen. Schuyler's Head Quarters, on a Mission from the Committee of general Safety of this State, to inquire into and report the actual state of the Northern Army. During the time he remained with us ... he quartered in the same House with the General & myself. Our evenings were usually passed together; and the state of our affairs generally the Subject of Conversation. Mr. Morris was of a temperament which never indulged despondency for a moment; not even on the most trying occasions. He never doubted the final triumph of our Arms, and the attainments of our Independence, and frequently descanted with great Energy on, what he termed, 'the rising glories of the Western World ... he declared in language highly poetic, and to which I cannot do justice, that the day was not far off distant when the Waters of the great Western lakes would, by the Aid of man, break through their Barriers and mingle with those of the Hudson. ... It is evident that he never lost sight of this object for in 1810, he came to Albany for the express purpose of engaging, if possible, the Legislature, in his plans for attaining it, and it appeared that he had, previous to his departure from Europe, secured, conditionally, a Loan of five millions for its execution. "While in Albany, Mr. Morris lodged in the same house with me ... and at his request, I accompanied him to that quarters of Mr. Clinton, Gen: Platt and Gen. Hull who were all at that time, as well as myself, members of the Senate. These gentlemen engaged with zeal in the project, and the ardour & perseverance with which the first named Gentleman [scored through] of them pursued it, and the merit he has justly acquired by the accomplishment of it, will never fail to do him honour. Nor has he I believe, on any occasion, done injustice to Mr. Morris by claiming to have been himself the original projector ...".

London: Printed for Joseph Appleyard, Catherine Street, Strand, and sold by all Booksellers, 1820. First edition. [ii], 414; 192 pp. First 22 numbers were printed by H.C. Reynell, the others by Appleyard. [no title page was issued for Volume II] COMPLETE. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary brown calf, rebacked with modern tan calf spine. First Appearance of "La Belle Dame sans Merci" In the issue of May 10, 1820, one of the Keats' most famous and haunting lyrics appears for the first time: the classic evocation of romantic medievalism, "La Belle Dame sans Merci" (or, "Mercy" as it appears here). The text of the poem in this version departs in interesting ways from the Keats manuscript of April 19, 1820, and it is not clear whether the changes were made at Hunt's suggestion, or by Keats himself. The poem appears at the end of Hunt's essay (pp. 246-248) on the troubadour poet Alain Chartier; Keats is not mentioned by name, only referred to as "a friend", and the poem itself is signed "Caviare" "With Keats and Shelley, Hazlitt and Lamb all among its contributors, the INDICATOR would have earned its place in literary history solely for the first appearance of the original version of "La Belle Dame sans Merci" - Anthony Holden, THE WIT IN THE DUNGEON (NY, 2005), p. 142.
