DER LANGE VERBORGENE FREUND, ODER: GETREUER UND CHRISTLICHER UNTERRICHT FÜR JEDERMANN, ENTHALTENDL WUNDERBARE UND KÜNSTE, SOWOHL FÜR DIE MENSCHEN ALS DAS VIEH

Reading, 1820. Contemporary half calf and patterned boards. Corners heavily worn, boards worn. Light toning and foxing. Very good. A legendary work of Pennsylvania German folk magic and remedies, in its exceedingly rare first edition. This publication (probably based on earlier works of folk magic in the European tradition such as the various works attributed to Albertus Magnus), was reprinted many times and became closely associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch magic tradition known as Braucherei. Often referred to as the "pow-wow book" in translation (indeed, still in print today), it is a work of broad appeal, as so many of the spells, recipes, and remedies are universally applicable to rural concerns, especially those pertaining to both human and animal health. The supposedly occult powers of the book figure in works of fiction as well. Not surprisingly, this first edition appears rarely, for all editions saw heavy use. Three copies located in OCLC; of these, only one copy is in North America, at the American Antiquarian Society. This is the first copy we have ever handled of this book, although we have hoped to have one since we first learned of it forty years ago.

FLORA BOREALI-AMERICANA, SISTENS CARACTERES PLANTARUM QUAS IN AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALI

Paris, 1820. Half titles. Modern half calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather labels. Ex-lib. with unobtrusive blindstamps, contents bit tanned, else very good. Andre Michaux came to America in 1785 to collect information on American trees which might be valuable to the French government. With the help of his son, François Andre, Michaux established a nursery and travelled extensively throughout the United States until 1796. In 1801 he published a work on American oaks, followed in 1803 by the present work, the most detailed study of American trees then issued. Although the titlepage is dated 1820, this issue is identical to that of 1803 but with a cancel titlepage, and the present issue is scarcer than its predecessor. The engraved plates were executed by P.J. Redouté, while the text was largely the work of the elder Michaux, with some assistance from his son and Louis Claude Richard, whom Asa Gray credited with the "sagacious observations, and the elegant terse and highly characteristic specific phrases of this work." An important work of American natural history.

Sketch of a System of the Philosophy of the Human Mind. Part First. Comprehending the Physiology of the Mind.

Bell & Bradfute et al., Edinburgh 1820 - Half title + TP + 1 leaf = Advertisement (see below) + [vii]-xv = Preface + [xvii]-ix =Contents + [1]-295, Octavo. First Edition.A Dramatic Overview by "the Last of the Scottish School of Metaphysicians"The Advertisement following the TP reads: "As in the present state of Dr Brown's health, it is quite impossible for him even to hope to finish his Text Book in the course of the present Session; and as he is at the time very desirous, that those who are atteding his Class should be able to avail themselves as much as possible of the part already completed; he thought fit, however awkward it may be, to publish it as a Fragment. College of Edinburgh, 5th March 1820." Brown died in April of 1820. The book was published under the care of his friend and biographer, David Welsh. "In 1819, he prepared his 'Physiology of the Mind' as a text-book for his students, and put it into the press the following winter. By the Christmas of that year he was rather unwell; in spring he removed for the benefit of his health to London, and died at Brompton in April, 1820." (McCosh, p. 324) Original brown boards with bumped corners. The spine has the original printed paper spine label, darkened but completely readable. On the front board, some student has doodled the name "Brown" (about 1" wide) in two locations. Contemporary k signature to top right corner of TP (G. Kirkpatrick). Two more, small student graffiti on the final blank leaf. Uncut. A really lovely copy of an extremely uncommon work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Portrait miniature on ivory.

c.1820. Painted on ivory, oval (90 × 75 mm), in attractive contemporary embossed gilt window mount, framed and glazed. Late nineteenth-century MS genealogical notes mounted on the backboard, including family tree. Also note "Painted circa 1820" and a catalogue number. Ivory rippled, and with two hair-line cracks, but the colour still strong, and remains attractive. Neil Benjamin Edmonstone (1765-1841) was the youngest of the five sons of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, first baronet of Duntreath. Edmonstone was admitted to the East India Company as a writer, travelling out Calcutta in 1783. "He soon gained entry to the secretariat: he was made deputy Persian translator by Earl Cornwallis in 1789, and Persian translator by Sir John Shore in 1794, and in 1798 he was appointed by the earl of Mornington (later Marquess Wellesley) as his private secretary. In that capacity, in 1799, he accompanied the governor-general to Madras and took part in the campaign which crushed Tipu Sultan … Promoted on 1 January 1801 to the post of secretary of the government of India's secret and political department, Edmonstone was made responsible for the planning of relations with all princely states. As such, he played an important part in forming strategies which led to the subduing of the Maratha confederacy led by the peshwa. The 'Wellesley policy' of assuring company hegemony in India by means of a system of 'subsidiary alliances' can be attributed to Edmonstone, though he remained discreetly in the background" (ODNB). He remained in the post after Wellesley left in 1805, and continued to "reinforce the [imperial] system he had done so much to initiate". With the arrival of Lord Minto as governor-general in 1807 "Edmonstone's powerful influence became, if anything, even stronger. Again, as in the days of Lord Wellesley, he acted as the governor-general's private secretary, and in this capacity he soon gained as much influence over policy as he had possessed before". Late in 1809 he became Chief Secretary to the Government of India; and, in 1812, he succeeded his colleague and friend James Lumsden as member of the supreme council at Calcutta. When he retired from India at the end of his five year term "the company's 'paramountcy' over India was nearly complete. His thirty-four years of service in India were crowned, soon after his return to England, by election to the East India Company's court of directors". In Lives of Indian Officers J. W. Kaye described him as "the ubiquitous Edmonstone, one of the most valuable officials and far-seeing statesmen which the Indian civil service has ever produced".

        SYMZONIA; A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

New-York: Printed by J. Seymour, 49 John-Street,. 1820. original drab boards with printed paper spine, all edges untrimmed.. Skillfully rebacked with the original paper spine panel preserved and. laid down with no loss of typography save one line of printer's. flowers at tail, several damp spots to front board, some scattered. foxing, mostly to edges of text leaves (modest, compared to other. copies we have seen). Overall, a very pleasing copy of a rare book.. Only a handful of copies survive in their original bindings. Enclosed. in custom cloth clamshell box. (#149998). First edition. The first science fiction novel by an American, and the first work of fiction to utilize the Symmes theory of concentric spheres, thus influencing a host of later hollow-earth lost race fiction. "The largest impetus to modern hollow-earth fiction came from a persuasive U.S. soldier, John Cleves Symmes, who revitalized and publicized Halley's theory of concentric spheres and polar openings. SYMZONIA (1820) by Adam Seaborn (an unidentified pseudonym), a pleasant early imaginary voyage, satirizes Symmes's ideas; it also comments, a clef, on the political structures of Europe and the U.S.A." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 579. "... a very entertaining novel, one of the more readable and enjoyable eutopias, for the unknown author is master of a very pleasant style, and his occasional satiric comments on Symmes's theory, the government of the new United States, and the nature of the British are amusing." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1987. Finely bound in late 19th century burgundy morocco and brown marbled boards, with decorative tooling to the spine in blind, lettered and ruled in gilt, all edges marbled. Very good, with rubbing to extremities, toning to spines, some rubbing to otherwise bright boards, former owner's bookplates to front pastedowns, former owners' inscriptions to title pages and first pages of text, spines lightly cracked and holding at half-titles, Vol. II with a short loss to page 228/229, a few signatures slightly loose but otherwise sturdy and intact bindings, bright and fresh pages. Overall, a pleasing copy. Todd & Bowden 140Ac, 140Ad, 140Ac. Although they all contain cancel titles stating "Second Edition," some volumes of the Second Edition of Ivanhoe are considered by bibliographers to be "First Edition, Third Issue" because they are composed of the same sheets from the First Edition, with the same collation. In this set, Volumes I & III conform to 140Ac, and Vol II contains an error (page 89 is misnumbered 98) that is indicative of the Second Edition. Although confusing, it is understandable how mixed editions and issues of Ivanhoe came to be, as demand for the novel was so high that Second Edition cancels were ordered before the First Edition was even completely bound. Widely considered Scott's most popular work, Ivanhoe is a historical novel set in late 12th century England during the reign of Richard I. Specifically, Ivanhoe, set in 1194 shortly after the Third Crusade, presents the development of modern England as the result of the enmity between the Saxons and Normans. The mythical text is narrated by the fictional protagonist Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a Saxon, and includes many notable historical figures including Richard the Lionheart, Robin Hood and the Merry Men, among others. An instant bestseller with resounding literary significance, Ivanhoe sold out of its first printing of 10,000 copies within two weeks and was credited with catalyzing the popularity of historical fiction.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Istruzione provvisoria elementare per il corpo dei carabinieri reali

Chirio e Mina, Torino 1820 - In 16, pp. VIII + 131 + (5) con 1 tav. f. t. inc. all'acquaf. piu' volte rip. (cm. 32 x 22). M. pl. coeva. Ottimo eemplare. Edizione originale molto rara. ITA

Original drawing of a flying fish - Poisson rolant

1820. In fine original condtion. Original drawing with annotations in ink by Arago, 250 x 395 mm, signed and dated by Jacques Arago; mounted and framed. Fine original watercolour by Louis de Freycinet's expedition artist, Jacques Arago. It is signed and dated lower right, and there is the customary Arago line border in pen; a reference to the official published work, "Voyage de l'Uranie, Poissons, pl. 26" appears to the right. The scientific atlases that are part of the official account of the Uranie voyage are splendid. The natural history specimens recorded and collected on this voyage were extensive and forty-five of the birds (among which were three new genera), more than thirty reptiles and perhaps one hundred and twenty fish were entirely new to science.Jacques Arago (1790-1855) joined the Freycinet expedition on the Uranie in 1817 and was not only the most accomplished of the artists who made the voyage, but was one of the most intriguing of all the early voyagers. The wonders of the long expedition from 1817-1820 stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he continued writing and drawing about the Pacific right up until he lost his sight. In 1822 he published his own well-regarded account of the voyage, "Promenade Autour du Monde" which was translated into English and published in 1823. Over the ensuing decades he wrote many more differing versions of this interesting account. The date of 1820 on this watercolour identifies that it was drawn by Jacques Arago either over the period the Uranie sailed from Sydney on December 25th. 1819 and before disaster struck in February 1820, or, between Montevideo via Rio on return to Le Havre, France. In February 1820 on approach to Tierra del Fuego the ship hit an uncharted reef and was seriously damaged. The naturalists lost vast amounts of their collections; seven men died; thirty eight deserted whilst others disembarked or became too ill to continue. The Mercury, their American rescue vessel was subsequently purchased by Freycinet and by May in Montevideo the Mercury became a French ship renamed the Physicienne and it is in this ship the expedition continued onto Le Havre. There is a further identifying note lower left by Arago that gives a precise latitude and longitude location of the drawing. The richness of the marine discoveries made by the scientists and artists over the long voyage ensured that the atlas of these discoveries, prepared by Freycinet after the expedition's return to France, remains one of the most beautiful of all Pacific illustrated books. Provenance: until the 1960s in Freycinet family ownership, subsequently in a private collection.

Milan: Ferdinando Artaria, 1820 - Small quarto (234 × 167 mm). Uncut in original boards, title inked to spine. Somewhat rubbed at the extremities and a little soiled, light browning, and some foxing throughout, one plate with one corner torn away, touching the plate mark but not the image, and two short splits, repaired with archival tissue verso, last plate mounted on the rear endpaper, overall very good. Engraved title page, lithographed frontispiece in sepia, and 21 other similar plates, plan. First edition of this attractive grand tour guide book to the duomo in Milan, fairly uncommon in the first edition with just 16 showing on OCLC. This copy with significantly more of the pleasingly sepia-toned plates than any of those listed that offer a collation, most with just 15. From the library of Sarah Frances Bell (1798-1857), with her attractive armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Bell married Sir John James Walsham (1805-1874), in 1826 at Bury St. Edmunds, becoming Lady Walsham. The historical notes on the cathedral church's centuries-long construction include a description of the new facade ordered to be completed by Napoleon when he crowned himself king of Italy in the Duomo 1805. Believing that the French government would make cover the cost, Carlo Pellicani finished Buzzi's famed neo-Gothic facade in just seven years, even though the French treasury never completed payment Napoleon was honoured with a statue placed atop one of the duomo's famous spires. Artaria (1781-1843) founded his printing company in 1800, and by 1805 was issuing prints, maps, and music in Milan, and was later the first printer to introduce Alois Senefelder's system of lithography into Italy. The firm later became well known for their daguerreotype images sold to tourists. [Attributes: First Edition]
