The Trials of Arthur Thistlewood, James Ings, John Thomas Brunt, Richard Tidd, William Davidson and others [aka The Cato Street Conspiritors] for High Treason at the Sessions House in the Old Bailey... April 1820: With the Antecedent Proceedings [2 Volume Set]

London: J. Butterworth and Son, 1820. 1st Edition . Very Good. 5.5 x 8.75 inches (14 x 22.5 cm). Complete in two volumes. Recent quarter black morocco leather bindings with marbled boards. Spines have five raised bands and gilt lettering, hand sewn headbands. Title page to Vol. I is in facsimile on period paper, light staining to lower corner and lower margins in both volumes, text is otherwise clean throughout. A complete transcript of the Cato Street Conspiracy trial proceedings. These volumes come from the famous library of Sir Thomas Granville and bear his gilt bookplate to the front pastedown endpapers. One of the most important private collections ever assembled, it included a vellum copy of the Gutenberg Bible and a First Folio of Shakespeare's works. On his death Grenville bequeathed his 20000 volume collection to the British Museum, and it now forms a cornerstone of the British Library collection. Volumes from the collection rarely come on the market as these books would have been lent or gifted by Grenville prior to his death in 1846. The catalogue of the collection, Bibliotheca Grenvilliana, edited by Payne and Foss (1842/1848) and Rye (1872) does not include this title. A rare item in terms of both content and provenance, presented in very fine later bindings. Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo. 694 + 663

A Letter to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for the Colonial Department

London: James Ridgway, 1820. Octavo, half-title, 144 pp.; fine condition in modern half calf, gilt-title on the spine, the Hobill Cole copy with his bookplate and with the blind stamps of Tom Ramsay and Fred Eager. One of the most important political documents of the Macquarie period, which ultimately had a catastrophic effect on Macquarie's career. It specifically attacked Macquarie's style of government, for his extravagance and autocracy, and led to the appointment of Commissioner Bigge to investigate the state of the colony, which in turn began the process to end Macquarie's governorship.Bennet (1777-1836) was a British politician who led a crusade to reduce crime, investigate prisons and transportation while reforming the London police. With a charge to 'to diminish the sum of human misery' Bennet worked tirelessly to expose maladministration and archaic practices in British gaols and the transportation system generally. In this published address to Lord Bathurst, Macquarie is accused of extravagance and autocracy. However, writing from England, Bennet relied upon prejudiced testimonies from Macquarie's enemies (including the indefatigable Reverend Samuel Marsden) and ultimately presented a biased version of events. Although Bennet's work in England was broad and enlightened, his critique of convict administration became a tool for colonial 'exclusives' who wished to end Macquarie's term as governor of New South Wales.A Letter to Earl Bathurst... remains a highly informative account of transportation and early colonial society generally, it includes useful statistical information including population figures, a civil list of persons holding government posts and shipping arrivals and departures for the years 1819-20. Furthermore, the appendix prints letters from Governor Macquarie, Samuel Marsden, W.H. Moore and others. Marsden's letter concerning affairs at the Parramatta hospital is a fine work of vitriol, asserting 'For the number of persons in the hospital, I do not believe that there is such an infamous brothel in the whole universe...I behold drunkenness, whoredom, sickness and the room where the dead are lying, debaucheries are going on.'         Nuova Descrizione del Duomo di Milano con Prospetti e Tavole incise in Rame

Milan: Ferdinando Artaria,, 1820. Small quarto (234 × 167 mm). Uncut in original boards, title inked to spine. Engraved title page, lithographed frontispiece in sepia, and 21 other similar plates, plan. Somewhat rubbed at the extremities and a little soiled, light browning, and some foxing throughout, one plate with one corner torn away, touching the plate mark but not the image, and two short splits, repaired with archival tissue verso, last plate mounted on the rear endpaper, overall very good. First edition of this attractive grand tour guide book to the duomo in Milan, fairly uncommon in the first edition with just 16 showing on OCLC. This copy with significantly more of the pleasingly sepia-toned plates than any of those listed that offer a collation, most with just 15. From the library of Sarah Frances Bell (1798-1857), with her attractive armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Bell married Sir John James Walsham (1805-1874), in 1826 at Bury St. Edmunds, becoming Lady Walsham. The historical notes on the cathedral church's centuries-long construction include a description of the new facade ordered to be completed by Napoleon when he crowned himself king of Italy in the Duomo 1805. Believing that the French government would make cover the cost, Carlo Pellicani finished Buzzi's famed neo-Gothic facade in just seven years, even though the French treasury never completed payment Napoleon was honoured with a statue placed atop one of the duomo's famous spires. Artaria (1781-1843) founded his printing company in 1800, and by 1805 was issuing prints, maps, and music in Milan, and was later the first printer to introduce Alois Senefelder's system of lithography into Italy. The firm later became well known for their daguerreotype images sold to tourists.

Manuscript inventory (and related documents) of the scientific Kunst- und Wunderkammer of David Blaesing, left to the Königsberg University, compiled by Karl Gottfried Hagen; titled 'Acten zur Blaesingschen Mathematischen Sammlung der Universitaet'.

Königsberg, 1820-1824 - Folio (375 x 215 mm), ff 12 [1 blank] of inventory, and ff 5 of correspondence, ink on paper, 2 red wax seals, uncut, sewn into contemporary blue paper wrappers with paper manuscript label as above. £7500An important catalogue of the scientific cabinet of the mathematician and astronomer David Blaesing in Königsberg (1660-1719), one of the eight founding members of the Berlin Academy of Sciences instigated by Leibniz (who became its first president). Blaesing focused on mathematical, optical and physical instruments, globes, minerals and naturalia. He bequeathed his library and cabinet to the Königsberg University. There is no printed catalogue of the collection and the present manuscript seems to be the only detailed record of its contents. The manuscript was compiled between 1820 and 1824 and consists of four catalogues with accompanying correspondence. From the latter we learn that the contemporary curator of the collection was Karl Gottfried Hagen (1749-1829), an important pharmacist, a close friend of Immanuel Kant, and son-in-law of the mathematician and astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel. This documentation of Blaesing's bequest was due to considerable losses the collection had undergone, and Hagen urges the Königsberg University to relocate the remaining collection and to appoint a new curator (the mathematician K. F. Wrede, 1766-1826). The four catalogues are all in Hagen's hand. The first catalogue is Hagen's copy of the inventory of the bequest of mathematical and optical instruments, drawn up in October 1720 shortly after Blaesing's death. It lists 184 items on eight pages. Amongst items listed are: Speculum concavum; 8 Vergroesserungsglaeser (eight magnifying glasses); 2 nicht gefasste Convex-Glaeser (two convex glasses without mounting); 2 Convexglaeser zu Brillen (two convex lenses for spectacles); tubes and lenses for the Camera obscura; Oculus opticus mit einem Kanal von Blech (with a brass tube); several terrestrial telescopes; a lanterna magica; an ocular with coloured glass and micrometer; prismata triangularia made of glass; mounted convex and polyhedral glasses; two microscopes with small optical pictures and numerous other microscopes; pieces of coloured glass (seven blue, three green, four red); several perspectives of different lengths covered with vellum or brass, some of them from the Netherlands; eleven small lenses for microscopes and six for telescopes; another lot of nine glasses for telescopes, one of them green; a Conus astroscopicus von Pappe. The second catalogue is Hagen's autograph copy of an inventory of Blaesing's physics instruments and naturalia, drawn up by the physicist Karl Daniel Reusch (1735-1806) in 1769-70. It lists 82 items on four pages, and includes 67 mineral specimens. The instruments include a glass blowpipe; a small glass sphere covered with mercury inside (a spherical mirror); a pear-shaped apparatus of blown glass; two small pieces of Vitrum antimonii; 2 Diaboli Cartesiani; a large piece of Marienglas; two glass eyes; another spherical mirror; blue glass; thermometers and barometers, etc.Hagen's third catalogue lists the mathematical instruments still present in 1820 (named inventory A at top and correspondingly in his draft letter, where he also explains that most of the physical instruments and the naturalia had already disappeared by then). This list comes to 122 items on four pages. Hagen describes the pieces he saw himself with more precision than his predecessors. He identifies a pair of globes by Blaeu and the glasses are listed in more modern terms, e.g. diopters; spherical mirrors made of glass; six bars of blue glass; a four-sectioned Dutch telescope; 31 glass lenses, partly mounted; a six-sectioned terrestrial telescope of three-foot length and covered with coloured vellum; the lanterna magica again, made of iron with a metal mirror, the glass lenses now lacking; a glass lens of one-inch in diameter, mounted with wood; etc. The fourth and last catalogue (named

Bon exemplaire. Ex-libris Steph. Eglée (Ecclesiae Parisiensis canonici), tampon rouge.       Paris.: Panckouke.. Ca. 1820.. LOT OF FIVE copper plate engravings (uncolored), images approx. 23 x 17 inches on sheets approximately 28 x 21 inches. Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly in outer margins). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This lot of five very large, finely engraved images includes: plate 51 Momie de Femme. All five plates are from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown are fragments of mummies, both human and animals, including birds, cats and crocodiles; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of these ancient objects. .

([4], xxxiii, [1], 298; [4], 327, [1]; [4], 371, [1], 3, [1] p.) ; 8? Signatures: v. 1.: pi? A-X8 Y?; v. 2.: pi? A-U8 X4; v. 3.: pi? A-Z8 2A4.In three volumes. --t.p. With half- and fly-titles. With advertisment (author's note about story) before fly-title in volume 1. With 2 leaves of publisher's catalogue at end of v. 3. Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. Edinburgh. -- t.p. verso. The final page of volume 2 and in volume 3 the final page and p. [372], are blank. In volume 1, pages 159-306 are misnumbered 151-298; also in this volume the chapter numbering is erratic, proceeding IV, VII, VII [pages 64, 81, 100]--cf. Todd and Bowden. In all three volumes the first doubleton, consisting of half-title and title, is set in duplicate, with two settings used for all three volumes in an indescriminate way. The exclamation mark after 'depart!' (in the title quotation) is either over the second 'R' in 'PRIOR' and the dash above the date measures 13mm; or the exclamation mark is over the space between 'O' and 'R' and the dash above the date measures 10 mm. -- cf. Todd and Bowden. This edition of Ivanhoe has two issues: only the first volume is altered, and can be identified by the press mark 9 on p. iii and on p. iv l. 6 the first word 'Peter' in the first issue. In the second issue where there are 2 variants, the press mark on p. iii is either 2 or not present and on p. iv l. 6 the first words are 'St Peter'. The final gathering Y of volume 1 is in duplicate setting, either with single quotation mark after 'journey' page 296 line 11 and in some copies figure 3 page 297, or with double mark and no figure.-- cf Todd and Bowden. Byström received the pencilled originals as a gift and mounted them on the walls of his home as a frieze. The plates are also meant to be studied in sequence, starting at Piazza del Popolo and ending at the present Piazza Venezia. A few copies were hand-coloured by the artist. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Emigrant's Guide to Upper Canada; Or, Sketches of the Present State of that Province, Collected From a Residence Therein During the Years 1817, 1818, 1819. Interspersed with reflections

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. Hardcover. Good. xi, 335 p. 20 cm. Publisher's wraps, rebacked. Corners worn. Paper repairs to front hinge, front free endpaper. Ink stamp front pastedown and stamp and ink inscription across from title page. Tear in front free endpaper. Front endpapers and title darkened but in general paper clean. Son of a British army officer, Charles Stuart was born in Jamaica. After 14 years service as a commissioned officer in the service of the East India Company, he came to Upper Canada in 1817. Devoutly religious, Stuart found an outlet for his humanitarian zeal in vigorous anti-slavery activities. Most of his written works are abolitionist tracts denouncing slavery, but "The Emigrants Guide to Upper Canada" is his best known work today. This guide describes the climate, settlements, state of society, the best season for travel, etc. He exhorts the newly arrived to avoid the night air by acquiring an ample supply of blankets at Quebec or Montreal (p. 164), lists the requirements for the advancement of the province (p. 188), and comments on the comparative advantages between Upper Canada and the U.S (p. 248). Most of us will agree that "insects, during the summer months, are the greatest natural nuisance in the country...The mosquitoe wanders round...with its perpetual alarum of attack" (p. 298). Still an interesting read. TPL 1186.

Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, undertaken by order of the British Government in the Years 1817-18

London: John Murray, 1820. Quarto, 3 folding maps or charts (the Chart of New South Wales with a small tear along a fold, but with no loss and a neat sealed tear) , 2 folding tables, a folding engraved plate (repaired) and five aquatints, two with original hand-colouring; an attractive copy rebound in modern polished calf spine gilt-decorated. First edition: 'arguably the most handsome of all Australian exploration journals... the foundation work in the field of Australian inland exploration and the first detailed description of the interior of New South Wales...' (Australian Rare Books). Oxley's book is now also recognised as of great note for Oxley's extensive notes on the Aboriginal tribes of the Wiradjuri of central New South Wales.Oxley's great narrative of his two major expeditions, the first detailed description of the Australian interior and the earliest book devoted to Australian inland exploration. Following the discovery of the Lachlan River by Evans in 1815, Macquarie appointed Oxley to lead an expedition to determine the course of the river and investigate its potential. Evans was appointed as second-in-command and Allan Cunningham was appointed as botanist. Setting out from Bathurst in April 1817 Oxley named the Macquarie River, explored the Lachlan and travelled about twelve hundred miles. But his findings on this first expedition were of some disappointment and Oxley recorded in his journal 'I was forced to come to the conclusion, that the interior of this vast country is a marsh and uninhabitable...'.A second expedition, to determine the course of the Macquarie River, was mounted in 1818 again with Evans as second-in-command to Oxley. Although their prime objective was not met, the expedition saw some exceedingly important discoveries including lush grazing pastures and a fine harbour. As a result, in 1819 Oxley sailed to Port Macquarie on board the Lady Nelson, together with King and Roe on the Mermaid, where Roe in particular was instrumental in charting the harbour and examining the head of the River Hastings. The appendices in the present volume include comments relating to this latter voyage, notably a letter from Oxley to Governor Macquarie dated 12 June 1819.The finely-drawn maps and aquatints include "A Native Chief of Bathurst", prepared after a drawing by John Lewin. This is one of very few known Aboriginal subjects by Australia's first professional artist. There are also views drawn by Major James Taylor from sketches by Evans.
