Paris.: Panckouke.. Ca. 1820.. LOT OF FIVE copper plate engravings (uncolored), images approx. 23 x 17 inches on sheets approximately 28 x 21 inches. Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly in outer margins). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This lot of five very large, finely engraved images includes: plate 51 Momie de Femme. All five plates are from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown are fragments of mummies, both human and animals, including birds, cats and crocodiles; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of these ancient objects. .

The Emigrant's Guide to Upper Canada; Or, Sketches of the Present State of that Province, Collected From a Residence Therein During the Years 1817, 1818, 1819. Interspersed with reflections

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. Hardcover. Good. xi, 335 p. 20 cm. Publisher's wraps, rebacked. Corners worn. Paper repairs to front hinge, front free endpaper. Ink stamp front pastedown and stamp and ink inscription across from title page. Tear in front free endpaper. Front endpapers and title darkened but in general paper clean. Son of a British army officer, Charles Stuart was born in Jamaica. After 14 years service as a commissioned officer in the service of the East India Company, he came to Upper Canada in 1817. Devoutly religious, Stuart found an outlet for his humanitarian zeal in vigorous anti-slavery activities. Most of his written works are abolitionist tracts denouncing slavery, but "The Emigrants Guide to Upper Canada" is his best known work today. This guide describes the climate, settlements, state of society, the best season for travel, etc. He exhorts the newly arrived to avoid the night air by acquiring an ample supply of blankets at Quebec or Montreal (p. 164), lists the requirements for the advancement of the province (p. 188), and comments on the comparative advantages between Upper Canada and the U.S (p. 248). Most of us will agree that "insects, during the summer months, are the greatest natural nuisance in the country...The mosquitoe wanders round...with its perpetual alarum of attack" (p. 298). Still an interesting read. TPL 1186.

Här gjorde han den fina och detaljrika skildringen av Roms karneval, vars tecknade förlaga Byström fick och hade uppsatt som en fris vid taket i sitt hem.         Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, undertaken by order of the British Government in the Years 1817-18

London: John Murray, 1820. Quarto, 3 folding maps or charts (the Chart of New South Wales with a small tear along a fold, but with no loss and a neat sealed tear) , 2 folding tables, a folding engraved plate (repaired) and five aquatints, two with original hand-colouring; an attractive copy rebound in modern polished calf spine gilt-decorated. First edition: 'arguably the most handsome of all Australian exploration journals... the foundation work in the field of Australian inland exploration and the first detailed description of the interior of New South Wales...' (Australian Rare Books). Oxley's book is now also recognised as of great note for Oxley's extensive notes on the Aboriginal tribes of the Wiradjuri of central New South Wales.Oxley's great narrative of his two major expeditions, the first detailed description of the Australian interior and the earliest book devoted to Australian inland exploration. Following the discovery of the Lachlan River by Evans in 1815, Macquarie appointed Oxley to lead an expedition to determine the course of the river and investigate its potential. Evans was appointed as second-in-command and Allan Cunningham was appointed as botanist. Setting out from Bathurst in April 1817 Oxley named the Macquarie River, explored the Lachlan and travelled about twelve hundred miles. But his findings on this first expedition were of some disappointment and Oxley recorded in his journal 'I was forced to come to the conclusion, that the interior of this vast country is a marsh and uninhabitable...'.A second expedition, to determine the course of the Macquarie River, was mounted in 1818 again with Evans as second-in-command to Oxley. Although their prime objective was not met, the expedition saw some exceedingly important discoveries including lush grazing pastures and a fine harbour. As a result, in 1819 Oxley sailed to Port Macquarie on board the Lady Nelson, together with King and Roe on the Mermaid, where Roe in particular was instrumental in charting the harbour and examining the head of the River Hastings. The appendices in the present volume include comments relating to this latter voyage, notably a letter from Oxley to Governor Macquarie dated 12 June 1819.The finely-drawn maps and aquatints include "A Native Chief of Bathurst", prepared after a drawing by John Lewin. This is one of very few known Aboriginal subjects by Australia's first professional artist. There are also views drawn by Major James Taylor from sketches by Evans. Ferguson, 796; Greenway, 7402; Australian Rare Books, 107.

Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, The

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820. - "The Finest English Edition" Large Paper Copy in a Contemporary Binding by J. MackenzieDEFOE, Daniel. STOTHARD, Thomas, illustrator. The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Embellished with engravings from designs by Thomas Stothard London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820. Second Stothard illustrated edition, large paper copy. Two large octavo volumes (9 1/2 x 6 inches; 242 x 153 mm.). [iv], xcii, 429, [1, blank]; [ii], [v], [i, blank], 415, [1, blank], pp. Engraved title-page vignettes and 20 engraved plates (including frontispiece in volume one) by Charles Heath after Thomas Stothard, all printed on India paper and mounted.Bound ca. 1820 by J. Mackenzie (stamp-signed in black on verso of front end-papers) in full red morocco, covers with a four-line gilt border, spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in compartments and with two green morocco gilt lettering labels. Decorative gilt board-edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The plates margins are foxed as usual but the images on India paper are fresh and bright. An excellent copy in a near fine contemporary binding. This edition includes a long introduction giving an account of Defoe's life and works. The plates here have been re-engraved after the earlier illustrations were judged as poor and inaccurate. "Thomas Stothard (1755-1834). completed his studies at the Royal Academy in 1783. [and soon] began to establish a strong reputation as a history painter, in one case attracting comparisons with Correggio and Parmigianino. He was elected ARA in 1791 and RA in 1794. Despite his growing reputation as a painter, book illustration seems still to have been his steadiest form of income. Many of his illustrations were for reissues, as in his celebrated illustrations for John Stockdale's edition of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe in 1790 (a sketch for Robinson Crusoe Building his Canoe is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) and it is clear that Stothard's images were an important factor in their popularity."He illustrated almost the whole range of English literature with a taste that seldom failed and a sympathy that was often remarkable," attaining "a place which is second to none for invention and grace." He was a close friend of Blake, and his work often resembles that of his more famous colleague. (Oxford DNB).Joseph Mackenzie was a London bookbinder of considerable eminence, known as one of London's finest binders and Bookbinder to the King. Joseph Zaehnsdorf was an apprentice in the shop of Mr. Mackenzie, and remained there until 1844, when he commenced business on his own account at 2 Wilson Street, Covent Garden, London.Lowndes 1, 614

In all three volumes the first doubleton, consisting of half-title and title, is set in duplicate, with two settings used for all three volumes in an indescriminate way.         Oeuvres de Florian Don Quixote, Galatea, Fables, Theatres, Melanges, Numa Pompilius, etc.

Paris: Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1820. Hard cover. Very Good/The 1853 sale catalogue of books belonging to the printer-scholar Antoine Augustin Renouard describes several versions of his 1820 edition of the works of Florian in duodecimo: a trade edition (#2453), an edition "with the plates from other editions," untrimmed (#2454), yet another, on pink velin, with an extra set of plates on Chine (#2455), and finally another just like it on green velin (#2456). The copy offered here does not correspond exactly to any of those entries, since it consist partly of the edition on pink velin, and partly on plain velin, and since it includes at least three states of practically every plate, but extends to five states of some plates (illustrating Don Quixote). Indeed, Florian's Don Quixote was one of his successes, next to his fables and pastorals. His mother was Spanish, and Florian was instrumental in promoting Cervantes to a French audience through translations, imitations (such as his Galatea), and popularizations. Brunet thought Florian "the best of our fabulists, after La Fontaine." . 12mo (19 cm); 16 volumes. 80 engraved illustrations (mostly by Desenne), each presented in several states of printing on different stock. The vast majority of these are in three states, one on pink velin, one state on white Chine, and a third on white velin. Two of the engravings are represented in 4 states, and six of them are present in 5 states. Although Renouard clearly printed editions of this book on uniform stock of white, pink, or green velin, this copy is mixed white and pink, with some volumes all pink, some all white, and several which shift from gathering to gathering. Uniformly bound in original 1/4 green cloth over marbled boards, with leather label on spine titled in gilt. One volume with loss to lower right corner of binding; bindings exhibit minor to light wear otherwise. Text block fresh, untrimmed, with occasional waterstains and occasional foxing on some plates.
