Fatherless Rosa or, The Dangers of The Female Life.

William Emans [Thomas Kelly], London 1820 - 8vo. 522pp. + 1pp plates list and 1pp. ads to rear (including an ad for Huish's "Castle of Niolo" published in 1820 and "The Castle of Inchvally" by Stephen Cullen presumably an Emans reprinting of the 1796 work). Original endpapers (including an admonition against borrowing label to the front pastedown), internally clean and sharp. A very superior copy. The frontispiece portrait of Huish is present, as is the general engraved title page bearing the Kelly imprint (issued with the first installment of the 22 parts) followed by the Emans title page. It's likely that seeing as the two publisher's shared the production responsibilities for the work they issued two title pages at some point before the final installment was issued in 1821. The BL copy only has the Emans title page (as far as I can recall), and the Huish portrait is frequently missing. Regardless any imprint is scarce. Montague Summers himself only possessed the 1834 edition. A really splendid piece of Gothery. jfrost#ecat2 [Attributes: First Edition]

19TH-CENTURY MAQUETTE BOOK, SOUVENIR OF COSTUMES

[c. 1820], [N.p. but Germany, possibly Liechtenstein] - 4to (245 x 165mm). A compilation of 73 brightly colored watercolors, many with manuscript captions in German, some are dated for the costume, all clipped and mounted into book, and illustrating the costumes and attributions of court officials, knights (Templar), Tartar costume, St. George on horseback, German orders of nobility, also for Spain, France, Holland, Italian, Turkish, Egypt and Babylon, and other various orders (as in Order of the Garter, in England and France) and religious dress of ordained and lay members of various orders including German, Italian, Spanish and Cistercian, Carmelite, Carthusian, Capuchin and Franciscan monks. Also, Jesuit pilgrims and sisters of the Benedictine, Sylvestrine and Cistercian, among other lesser-known orders and historical figures such as Leopold III of Austria and Louis III of Tremoilles. Early 19th-century half calf over imitation silk cloth-covered boards and decorative endpapers, spine with label COSTUME; some light foxing most severe at beginning, otherwise the colors remaining extraordinarily fresh and bright. Armorial bookplate from the Princely house of Liechtenstein on front pastedown. Unique compilation of 73 expertly executed hand-colored watercolors of various religious, knightly and official orders with a bookplate of the royal arms of Liechtenstein. Each figure is executed with extraordinary talent and is superbly hand-colored in a range of washes; many of these costumes have changed very little and have a history stretching back to medieval times. In the twentieth century an interest in costume and fashion books was spurred on by the dawning Victorian age in England in the 1830s, which then spread to the continent. Each picture in this unique set is an individual work of art, full of expression, and with strikingly attractive faces and gestures. The expert attention given to each work of art strongly suggests this book was a maquette for a larger print-run of a souvenir book of costumes. Captions are in German and early provenance points to possible creation in the principality of Liechtenstein. One can think of the principality’s official motto "For God, Prince and Fatherland" and see how all these official garments best represent a history of European court and important religious connections for an established royal line such as Liechtenstein. Perhaps this book was once in the royal home of the Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein, who had fourteen children, and it may have belonged to his son Prince Friedrich Adalbert (1807-1885), who later became the 1,018th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria. With interesting connections to the royal house of Liechtenstein and 73 examples of hand-colored historic costumes, this truly is a unique survival. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

VIEW NEAR THE FALLS OF SCHUYLKILL

Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1820. One chip in top margin and three chips in right margin, all outside the plate mark and under the mat line. A very good, fresh illustration. Matted. Joshua Shaw was a British landscape painter who came to the United States in 1817. He conceived the idea of a published series of American views, which he executed over the next few years, and which were published in Philadelphia as a series of nineteen plates entitled PICTURESQUE VIEWS OF AMERICAN SCENERY. The original edition of 1819 was issued by Moses Thomas and exists in only a few copies. The present plate is from the 1820 second issue published by Mathew Carey, also very rare. In this subtly colored scene, a rider walks his horse through a wooded opening toward a valley. The Schuylkill Falls are shown in the distance and a thickly wooded forest lies beyond. The valley is illuminated by sunlight pouring through a break in the cloudy sky. A wonderful view of a verdant Pennsylvania. DEÁK, PICTURING AMERICA 315.         Scarce Huntington calligraphic rendering of the Declaration of Independence, one of the earliest broadside reproductions, with the signatures of the signers in exact facsimile.

[Hartford, CT], circa 1820-1824. 19.5" x 24". "Broadside: (DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE) HUNTINGTON, Eleazer, engraver. In Congress, July 4th 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. [Hartford], circa 1820-24. Linen-backed broadside engraving on wove stock, measuring 19.5"" x 24"", mounted on contemporary rollers, handsomely framed, entire piece measures 31 ""x 30"". Edges lightly frayed, not affecting text, a few minor abrasions to varnished surface (without any loss of text). An extremely good copy on original wooden rollers, rare, desirable, and important. The Declaration of Independence, the foundation document of the United States, has been printed a myriad of times since its original publication in 1776. At first as broadsides, then as an essential addition to any volume of laws, it was from the beginning a basic work in the American canon. The present document is one of the earliest broadside reproductions of the Declaration, done within a few years of the first broadside republications. In the period following the War of 1812, Americans began to look back for the first time with historical perspective on the era of the founding of the country. The republic was now 40 years old, and the generation of the American Revolution, including the signers of the Declaration, was dropping away. With nostalgia and curiosity, many Americans began to examine the details of the nation’s founding. Among other things, such documents as the debates of the Constitutional Convention were published for the first time. It seemed extraordinary that the Declaration of Independence, as created, was unknown to Americans, when the text was so central to the national ego. Several entrepreneurs set out to bridge this gap by printing reproductions of the document. The first to do so was a writing master named Benjamin Owen Tyler, who created a calligraphic version of the Declaration and published it in 1818, recreating exactly the signatures of the signers as they appeared on the original. Three other broadside printings of the Declaration were issued in 1818 and 1819, each containing ornamental borders or illustrations. These were followed in the early 1820s by the present printing by Hartford engraver and author on penmanship Eleazer Huntington. Huntington followed Tyler’s example by creating a calligraphic facsimile of the Declaration, but stripped out the ornaments and illustrations that had been added by previous publishers, returning the document to the simple title and text of the original, and providing the signatures of the signers in exact facsimile. According to John Bidwell’s list, this is the sixth broadside reproduction of the Declaration of Independence. Bidwell locates three copies of the Huntington printing of the Declaration in institutional holdings: the Huntington Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society (Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, 98: 247-302)."

Set of Four Shooting Prints, [Plate 1] Shooting, Going Out, [Plate 2] Shooting, Game Found, [Plate 3] Shooting, Dogs brought the Game, and reloading, [Plate 4] Shooting, Refreshing

1820. Colour printed aquatints heightened with gum arabic. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on the bottom margin. Four puncture holes on left margin where it was bound together. Plate 1, has some very minor foxing in margins. Image size: 9 ¾ x 12 5/8 inches. A handsome set of four shooting prints aquatinted by S. Himley after paintings by the celebrated sporting artist Dean Wolstenholme. Around 1820, S. Himley produced two sets of hunting aquatints after skilled paintings by Wolstenholme. These sets, expertly engraved in aquatint, were comprised of four plates illustrating shooting, and four plates depicting coursing. As with many of the prints after Wolstenholme's paintings it is difficult to decipher whether Himley's works reproduced paintings by Dean Wolstenhome Snr. or by his son Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. The Wolstenholme's were both talented sporting artists who earned a reputation as skilled animal painters. Both father and son exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and garnered countless commissions from eager enthusiasts. They specialized in fine hunting scenes and had a natural flare for depicting movement, which lends their work an animation and life, which is truly compelling. This stunning set of four shooting prints is rarely found as a complete set and is a wonderful example of English sporting art at its best. Octavo, contemporary full straight-grain olive morocco gilt rebacked in brown morocco, marbled endpapers and edges. $1500.Later edition, with two facsimile documents in Volume I.“Everyone with an interest in Johnson is very much in debt to Boswell not only for the years of devotion he invested in the study of Johnson’s life, but for the uncanny skill with which he conveyed the quality of Johnson’s personality and his effect on the people about him. If there had been no Boswell, Johnson would have been one of the most famous names in English literature; but that he has become a household name, known to millions who will never read a line of his writing, is due to the chance that brought Boswell into his company” (Wain, 229).         Kangaroos of New South Wales. View from Seven-Mile Hill near Newcastle N.S.W.

London: R.A. Ackermann, 1820. Hand-coloured engraving, 287 X 380 mm., small closed tear to lower blank margin (image and caption unaffected); very good. A very early engraved study of two kangaroos, the outcome of the fruitful relationship between two convict engravers, Walter Preston and Joseph Lycett, and the artistically talented army officer Major James Wallis. This is a natural history study from Wallis' fine album of Australian views titled An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales published by Ackermann in London in 1821. The plate was engraved by the convict artist Walter Preston whose considerable talents came to the attention of Major Wallis, then commander of the convict settlement at Newcastle. At the time, Newcastle enjoyed a fearsome reputation for as a place for secondary punishment and was described by a contemporary officer as 'the Hell of New South Wales'.For many years the attribution of Wallis as the artist of the views in An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales was a matter of historical conjecture (the implication being that he had appropriated the work of Preston and Lycett). However, the recent revelation of original watercolour material by Wallis establishes him as the artist. Not that this fact diminishes the achievement of the convict engravers: Preston was tasked with working upon the only copper sheets available, manufactured for sheathing the hulls of ships, a difficult material softer than standard engraving copper.Ultimately, both Preston and Lycett were pardoned by Macquarie on Wallis' recommendation, in no small part because of their work on this book. When Wallis departed Australia in 1819 he took the plates with him to London where this book was published by Ackermann, complete with an introductory history of the colony and a map of Port Macquarie by the surveyor John Oxley.

        Landscape and Castle by Laporte

1820. Hand-coloured aquatint printed on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor creasing, and mild rippling. Trimmed virtually to image on all sides. A stunning pastoral landscape engraved after an original work by the famous watercolour painter John Laporte. This print may be part of a series as the inscription below the title, which reads, "From Select Compositions of Modern Masters," seems to suggest. A student of the aquatint engraver J. C. Stadler and the Royal Academy Schools, Frederick Christian Lewis was a renowned and versatile painter, engraver, and etcher. Although he produced and exhibited many landscape paintings throughout his life, he was chiefly known for his prolific and varied engravings. In addition to his separately issued topographical, sporting, and landscape prints, he executed numerous engravings after the Old Masters and eminent contemporary artists like Landseer, Bonington, and Danby for publications such as John Chamberlaine's Original Designs of the most Celebrated Masters in the Royal Collection (1812) and William Ottley's Italian School of Design (1823). Lewis was also a skilled portraitist, and he received copious engraving commissions from various members of the Royal Family. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

Scarce Huntington calligraphic rendering of the Declaration of Independence, one of the earliest broadside reproductions, with the signatures of the signers in exact facsimile.

[Hartford, CT], circa 1820 - 1824. 22.5" x 25.5". "Broadside: (DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE) HUNTINGTON, Eleazer, engraver. In Congress, July 4th 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. [Hartford], circa 1820-24. Linen-backed broadside engraving on wove stock, measuring 22.5 x 25.5"". Handsomely matted and framed, entire piece measures 31"" x 27"". Toned to mellow brown, a few minor abrasions (without any loss of text), light dampstain to right margin, tack holes to extreme top and bottom edges. A very good copy, rare, desirable, and important. With nostalgia and curiosity, many Americans began to examine the details of the nation?s founding. Huntington followed Tyler?s example by creating a calligraphic facsimile of the Declaration, but stripped out the ornaments and illustrations that had been added by previous publishers, returning the document to the simple title and text of the original, and providing the signatures of the signers in exact facsimile. According to John Bidwell?s list, this is the sixth broadside reproduction of the Declaration of Independence. Bidwell locates three copies of the Huntington printing of the Declaration in institutional collections: the Huntington Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society (Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, 98: 247-302)."

        Le General La Fayette

1820. Lithograph. Printed on india paper and mounted onto thick white wove as issued. In excellent condition. A striking portrait of General Lafayette with a plaque listing the major battles that he participated in. Lafayette's actions during the American Revolution earned him a place in America's pantheon of heroes. Joining the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, he became one of the first Frenchman to come to America's aid. Through his valiant commitment to the American cause Lafayette became a close associate of George Washington's, and he helped negotiate French aid for the Revolution. He was voted a major general at the age of 20 by the Continental Congress, and his actions at the battle of Yorktown helped corner the British forces, which led to their surrender in 1781. Returning to France, he played an important role in the French Revolution, though the chaos inherent in the situation nearly cost him his life. Ultimately though he was hero in his own country as well as in the New World. In 1824, as the United States approached its 50th anniversary, President Monroe invited General Lafayette to return to America. He enjoyed a hero's welcome and toured the 24 states in triumph. Lafayette had a great love for the United States, a sentiment which is best expressed in his eloquent words to Henry Laurens, the Congressional President; "The moment I heard of America I loved her; the moment I knew she was fighting for freedom I burnt with a desire of bleeding for her; and the moment I shall be able to serve her, at any time, or in any part of the world, will be the happiest of my life". Through his involvement in the American and French revolutions Lafayette became a symbol of the ideals of liberty and a crusader against tyranny. Lafayette's veneration for the United States was so strong that when he returned to France, he took with him a plot of American soil, within which he was buried. Lafayette came to America during this country's birth and his words embody the ideals and sentiments that helped form this country. In a letter to his wife in 1777, he wrote; "The happiness of America is intimately connected with the happiness of all mankind; she is destined to become the safe and venerable asylum of virtue, of honesty, of tolerance, and quality and of peaceful liberty."
