"What good is an old book, badly printed in Gothic type?" demands Macedo. "No good at all." Macedo, so vehement on the subject of book collecting, was expelled from the Augustinian Order for - among other misdemeanors - the systematic theft of books. The editor of the @Jornal, José Agostinho de Macedo (1761-1831), was a prolific writer of prose and verse, best known for his pamphleteering: "Ponderous and angry like a lesser Samuel Johnson, he bullies and crushes his opponents in the raciest vernacular . his idiomatic and vigorous prose will always be read with pleasure" (Bell, @Portuguese Literature p. 282). Macedo was also well known for his arrogance in literary matters: he condemned as worthless Homer's poems, which he had never read in the original, and believed his own epic @Gama, 1811 (reworked and published as @O Oriente, 1814), could have taught Camões how @Os Lusiadas should have been written. Toward the end of his life Macedo became Court preacher and chronicler, and a friend of D. Miguel.*** Innocêncio IV, 109, 192 and XII, 178-9: without collation or number of issues. @Grande enciclopédia XIV, 317: mentions this work with the date 1820, giving no further information. @Greenlee Catalogue I, 705: calls for the same number of issues as our copy.         [in Hebrew characters, transliterated at] Doz Nayye` Te`stame`nt fon De`m Me`ssyas.

"In 1820 the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews (commonly known as the London Jews Society, or the L.J.S.) -- founded in 1809 -- undertook to supply German-speaking Jews with copies of the German Scriptures in Rabbinic character. With this object it employed Judah D'Allemand to transliterate Luther's version of the N.T., using Von Meyer's Frankfort edition of 1819" (Darlow & Moule). We have to admit that there is considerable disagreement as to whether the language of this N.T. is Yiddish, Judeo-German, or merely German in Hebrew characters. Different libraries have catalogued it differently; the majority say Yiddish. We take the middle ground of Judeo-German, that is, German-based Yiddish rather than Polish Yiddish. To us, this makes sense as the LJS published a Polish Yiddish N.T. the next year (i.e., 1821). Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate fewer than ten U.S. libraries reporting ownership.

Georg" an erster Stelle aufgeführt.

Gio. Francesco Spannocchi Piccolomini, Cavaliere dell'Insigne ordine di Santo Stefano..

Livorno, presso Pietro Ciardi, 1820 circa.

IVANHOE; A Romance. By "The Author of Waverley," &c.

Edinburgh Archibald Constable and Co. 1820 - 3 volumes. First Edition, with all half-titles present, and the three pages of ads in Vol. III, page 159 numbered correctly. 8vo, contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, the spines with double gilt ruled bands separating the compartments a red morocco lettering pieces to each volume, stamped in gilt. [vi] xxxiii, [blank] 298; [iv], 327; [iv], 371, [blank], 3 ads pp. A handsome set, well preserved in its original bindings, now with sympathetic rebacking incorporating the original morocco lettering labels, internally quite clean, and with a little evidence of age, the contemporary bindings with some light expected age or use evidence at the extremities. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. This set with all half-titles and the ads present as is often not the case. The best of Scott’s historical novels and by far his most famous work. This was Scott's culminating success in a book-selling sense, and marked the highest point both of his literary career and his social prosperity." He was already considered to be the inventor of the historical novel and the success of his Waverley series was immediate and long lasting throughout the English speaking world. Sir Walter Scott’s romantic tale of the conflict between the Normans and the Saxons is among the most highly regarded works of historical fiction. Among other things, it is one of the earliest tales to so closely associate the legendary figure of Robin Hood as playing a major role in the removal or Prince John from the throne he had stolen from his half-brother Richard the Lionhearted. The collimation of the tale is, in essence, the birth of modern Britain. Yet in spite of the grand nature of the events, Ivanhoe is largely a tale of love- Man and women, father and daughter, king and country. First editions of Sir Walter Scott’s heroic tale are becoming as hard to find as Prince John’s heart. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Johann Andreas Naumann's.

      - Leipzig, E. Fleischer, 1820-1844 (volumes 1-12); Stuttgart, Hoffmann, (1860), (volume 13). 13 volumes bound in 12. Royal-8vo (222 x 145mm). With 3 engraved portraits (J.A. Naumann, C.L. Nitzsch and J.F. Naumann), 9 (5 handcoloured) engraved frontispieces, 1 engraved anatomical plate and 391 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary brown half calf, richly gilt decorated spines, marbled sides (last volume hinges splitting). The first comprehensive account of the avi-fauna of Germany. This edition is quite distinctive from Johann Andreas Naumann's work "Naturgeschichte der Land- und Wasser- Vögel des nördlichen Deutschlands und angränzender Länder', of 1795-1817, although this earlier book laid the foundation for the later one.To honour his father, Johann Friederich Naumann put the name of Johann Andreas Naumann at the beginning of the title. Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780-1857) was a German ornithologist and engraver/artist and is regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Germany."In fact the son had begun on a much wider scale and had incorporated only fragments of the original. Brehm, who was hard to please, called it 'splendid' in his long review of the second and third volumes of his 'Ornis' in 1824: 'The younger Mr. Naumann is, like his father, a born naturalist, for he possesses the eagerness that fears no obstacles and does not cool during difficult and protracted investigations, the gift of observation that catches what thousands have overlooked. and finally the skill that understands how to classify and expound what has been discovered'".'Noch heute ist sie, hist. betrachtet, ein Gegenstand weltweiter Bewunderung. As the work was published over a very long period complete copies are of utmost rarity. The plates (1-93) of the first 3 volumes have very strong off-setting from the text unto the plates, the other volumes have not been affected. For this reason our set has been very reasonably priced. The plates are beautifully handcoloured. A nice uniformly bound set.Nissen IVB, 666; Anker 355; Schlenker 248.2. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Catalogue of the Library at Eshton Hall, in the County of York.

[Catalogued by Robert Triphook]. xi, 308 pp. 8vo, orig. edition binding of straight-grained morocco-backed brown boards (corners a bit rounded), flat spine gilt. London: R. Triphook, 1820. "Forty Copies Printed." This is the extremely rare first catalogue of Miss Currer's library and the second copy I have handled. The second edition was issued in an edition of 100 copies in 1833; one sees it from time to time. Miss Currer (1785-1861), lived a secluded life at Eshton Hall, where, from an early age, she immersed herself in books. Having inherited two large estates, she enjoyed ample resources to form a large and important library, ultimately collecting about 20,000 books and important manuscripts. "Miss Currer's library...contained many rarities. It was rich in natural science, topography, antiquities, and history. There was a fair collection of Greek and Latin classics...The books were all in choice condition, many with fine bindings."-D.N.B., V, pp. 340-41. Of her library, Dibdin wrote "I may fairly and honestly say, that with the exception of Althorpe, Chatsworth and Stowe, I know of no such collection of books situated in the country, which can pretend to break a lance with it." Fine copy. Inscribed on the free front endpaper by Miss Currer to "Cooper Preston Esqr. with Miss Currer's Compts." With Preston's signature, dated 1821, on the front pastedown. Bookplate of A.R.A. Hobson. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 612-13. De Ricci, pp. 141-43. .

Experiments on the Effect of a Current of Electricity on the Magnetic Needle" In Annals of Philosophy, Volume XVI [16], July-December 1820, pp. 273-276

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF OERSTED'S 1820 DISCOVERY OF ELECTROMAGNETISM, opening "a new epoch in the history of physics" (DSB, 10, 185). "Its importance cannot be overestimated" (Norman, Part III, 1221). Hans Christian Oersted's paper, first published in 1820 as a small Latin pamphlet Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electrici in acum magneticum, laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics and the work of Ampère, Faraday, and then Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Realizing the importance of the English translation, Oersted did the translation himself. In 1820 and although most scientists thought electricity and magnetism were not related, there were some reasons to think there might be a connection. For instance, it had long been known that a compass, when struck by lightning, could reverse polarity. Oersted had previously noted a similarity between thermal radiation and light, though he did not determine that both are electromagnetic waves and seems to have believed that electricity and magnetism were forces radiated by all substances. "During a lecture demonstration, on April 21, 1820, while setting up his apparatus, Oersted noticed that when he turned on an electric current by connecting the wire to both ends of the battery, a compass needle held nearby deflected away from magnetic north, where it normally pointed… The audience didn't even notice. But it was clear to Oersted that something significant was happening.  "Some have suggested that this was a totally accidental discovery, but accounts differ on whether the demonstration was designed to look for a connection between electricity and magnetism, or something else entirely. Certainly Oersted was well-prepared to observe such an effect, with the compass needle and the battery (or "galvanic apparatus," as he called it) on hand.  "Whether completely accidental or at least somewhat expected, Oersted was intrigued by his observation. He didn't immediately find a mathematical explanation, but he thought it over for the next three months, and then continued to experiment, until he was quite certain that an electric current could produce a magnetic field (which he called an "electric conflict"). "His battery, a voltaic pile using 20 copper rectangles, probably produced an emf of about 15-20 volts. He tried various types of wires, and still found the compass needle deflected. When he reversed the current, he found the needle deflected in the opposite direction. He experimented with various orientations of the needle and wire [noting] that the effect couldn't be shielded by placing wood or glass between the compass and the electric current.  "On July 21, 1820, Oersted published his results in a pamphlet… His results were mainly qualitative, but the effect was clear-an electric current generates a magnetic force.  "The publication caused an immediate sensation… Others began investigating the newly found connection between electricity and magnetism… Ampère developed a mathematical law to describe the magnetic forces between current carrying wires… A decade after Oersted's discovery, Faraday demonstrated essentially the opposite of what Oersted had found-that a changing magnetic field induces an electric current. Following Faraday's work, Maxwell developed Maxwell's equations, formally unifying electricity and magnetism" (APS Portal). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Baldwin, Cradock & Joy. Bears the armorial bookplate of the University Library of Edinburgh, "Presented by Professor A. Crum Brown"; no other library marks inside or out. Brown did pioneering work in the design of a system representing chemical compounds in diagrammatic form. 4to. vii, [Errata], 480 pages, [4]. 5 plates. Nitzsch and J.F. Naumann), 9 (5 handcoloured) engraved frontispieces, 1 engraved anatomical plate and 391 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary brown half calf, richly gilt decorated spines, marbled sides (last volume hinges splitting). The first comprehensive account of the avi-fauna of Germany. This edition is quite distinctive from Johann Andreas Naumann's work "Naturgeschichte der Land- und Wasser- Vögel des nördlichen Deutschlands und angränzender Länder', of 1795-1817, although this earlier book laid the foundation for the later one./To honour his father, Johann Friederich Naumann put the name of Johann Andreas Naumann at the beginning of the title. As the work was published over a very long period complete copies are of utmost rarity./The plates (1-93) of the first 3 volumes have very strong off-setting from the text unto the plates, the other volumes have not been affected.         Swiss Scenery From Drawings By.

Published By Rodwell & Martin, London 1820 - First edition. 4to., recently rebound with a dark brown calf spine, marble boards, raised bands, gilt decoration in the compartments, leather spine label, vii, 200pp. With 60 engraved plates and an engraved titlepage. Titlepage a bit ragged around edges, some repairs to the last leaf (no loss to text, repairs are in the margins only), occasional foxing but still a near fine copy. James Pattison Cockburn [1779-1847] army officer and water-colourist. According to German composer Louis Spohr, to whom he showed more than 200 landscapes of Naples and its surroundings, Cockburn had ôextraordinary skill in catching charming views in a matter of minutes.ö He was becoming an indefatigable sketcher. In the period 1816û22 he produced drawings in sepia as he moved from place to place in the Alps and elsewhere in Italy and Switzerland: vast panoramas and mountain passes figured alongside scenes of streets and market places. The wealth of pictures is explained not only by CockburnÆs mastery of technical means but also, according to Spohr, by his use of ôa machine that projected the landscape, in reduced scale, on paper.ö Although it is not certain that Spohr was referring to a camera lucida, the sharpness of the images in several sketches done at the time he made his remark in some measure substantiates this hypothesis." In the 1820's Cockburn was posted to Upper and Lower Canada and "during these years of peace Cockburn had ample leisure to sketch Quebec and its environs as well as scenes in Upper and Lower Canada where his tours of inspection took him."         An enquiry into the cause of the present distress of the people. ..... Second edition.

London: printed for the author, and sold by J. Ridgway. 1820. 8vo., vii + (1) + 324 + (4)pp., including the final Advertisement and errata leaves, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine simply gilt with a label. A very good copy from the early 19th century library of Bernard Edward Howard, 12th Duke of Norfolk> (1765-1842), with his bookplate on pastedown. First edition with this title (see further notes below). Goldsmiths 23075. Apparently very rare: no other copies of this edition in COPAC and apparently not in BL nor Kress nor Einaudi nor Mattioli nor Hollander*. This was actually a reissue, with only a different title-page, of Hall's earlier (1805) The effects of civilization on the people in European states.> According to a 19th century note in a copy at the University of London, Hall's book 'seems not to have sold well' (in 1805), hence, we presume, his new attempt to republish it, with a rather more topical title-page, in 1820. Whatever its history, Hall's book - his magnum opus - deserves a significant place in Socialist literature, as it was, according to a ms note in the Burns' copy, 'a most notable book'. Alexander Gray (The Socialist tradition: Moses to Lenin.> 1946) places Hall in the select group of five English Pre-Marxians (the other four being William Thompson, Thomas Hodgskin, J.F. Bray and John Gray). Gray defines 'pre-Marxians' as meaning 'those writers who arrived at what is substantially the Marxian theory of exploitation and of surplus value - not in frequently, like Marx, building on Ricardo. Indeed, Hall (1740? - 1820?) was the earliest of these Ricardian Socialists and was held in high regard by Marx himself. Dr. Anton Menger (The Right to the whole produce of labour.> 1899) has also acknowledged Hall's 'great influence on the older English socialists, and through them indirectly on the socialist movement of our own day' (op. cit. p.47). And Judith Blow Williams (Guide to English economic history,> vol.II, p.542) uses the term 'important' in her brief description of Hall's book, an adjective she tends to use sparingly. * The original 1805 printing is almost as rare but with copies at Goldsmiths (Un. of London) + NLS + John Rylands, and this, too, not in BL.

(Whyld: 1820:14) First English edition.Translated from Il guioco incomparablile degli schcchi (1769) by Ponziani, here erroneously attributed to Ercole del Rio. J S Bingham is a pseudonym of Captain John Smith, RN "Quotes and queries", British Chess Magazine, November 1978, page 523. Irwin's "Essay on the origin of the game is a paper on Chinese chess cited as Whyld 1795:3.Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani was an 18th-century Italian law professor, priest, chess player, composer and theoretician. He is best known today for his chess writing. Ponziani was friends with fellow Modenese chess players and writers Ercole del Rio and Giambattista Lolli, and collectively the trio are known as the Modenese Masters. In 1769 Ponziani published the first edition of Il giuoco incomparabile degli scacchi (The Incomparable Game of Chess). As Ponziani did not include his name in the work (Opera d'Autore Modenese) it was identified to the Anonymous Modenese. The second edition in 1782 was much improved and laid out the principles of the Italian school of chess as exemplified by 17th-century Italian masters such as Gioachino Greco. Although Ponziani identified himself in the second edition, the 1820 translation by English naval officer J. B. Smith using the pen name J. S. Bingham, The Incomparable Game of Chess, attributed the work to del Rio. Ponziani's work is the best practical guide produced by the Modenese Masters. Like writings by del Rio and Lolli, Ponziani deals only with the opening and endgame, with no discussion of the middlegame. (Murray, H. J.         æ–°ç‰ˆæ±Ÿæˆ 花呉服屋大雙å [Shinpan Edo no Hana Gofukuya Sugoroku]

      - [Tokyo], Yamashiroya Matabe [1820 - 1850?]. Woodblock print 67x46cm, printed in black, blue and pink; folded. Smudges and soiling, a couple of small chips from the top edge. A pretty decent copy, certainly better than the only other copy I've located. Another lesson, if we need it, that the Japanese had connected and mastered the important stuff of life long before the rest of us: advertising, fun and shopping. In this sugoroku - a racing game - Eisen takes us through the most prestigious dry goods stores and drapers - ie high fashion - of Edo (Tokyo) until we reach Ebisu and Daikokuten - gods, respectively, of merchants and wealth. In other words, who isn't this game for? Every working Edo inhabitant with a speck of ambition will want a place among the great merchants, rubbing shoulders with such gods while their wealthy patrons have confirmed that their shopping habits are blessed by the gods. The titans of fashionable commerce here include Echigoya (now Mitsukoshi), Shirokiya (which lasted some three hundred years, its ghost is a department store in Honolulu), Iwaki Sotoya, Matsuzakaya (still going), Ebisuya, Daimaru (still going), Shimaya, Sawanoi and Izukura. Eisen did more than one sugoroku: this, one of more prosaic sights of Edo, one of the Tokaido road, and an elaborate sort of fourth one - the set of courtesan prints which together form a game - are the ones I've traced. I can only find one other copy of this shopping adventure, printed in yellow rather than blue, in the UC Berkeley library.

Autograph letter signed "Meyerbeer" to unidentified correspondent [?Julius Stern]

Apparently unpublished. Not in Becker, Heinz, Gudrun Becker, and Sabine Henze-Döhring, eds.: Giacomo Meyerbeer: Briefwechsel und Tagebücher. The unusual greeting "Geehrter Herr und Landsmann" and the content of the letter suggest that Meyerbeer's correspondent is, in all likelihood, Julius Stern (1820-83), who in 1850 founded the Stern'sches Konservatorium in Berlin. With a grant from the king of Prussia, Stern spent the academic year 1843-44 as a voice student in Paris, where Meyerbeer protected him and introduced him to Berlioz. Meyerbeer uses the same greeting in a (likewise undated) letter to Stern that Stern's son and biographer Richard Stern published in his memoirs of his father: "Stern became closely acquainted with Hector Berlioz as well. Meyerbeer sent him a ticket for a concert by Berlioz and personally accompanied him there [as confirmed in the present letter]. Meyerbeer had the first box and left the best seat to Stern... Soon after, Stern sent some of his compositions to Berlioz, who had asked for them... Not much later, Meyerbeer wrote to Stern: 'Geehrter Herr und Landsmann! You may see your wish of a closer acquaintance with Berlioz fulfilled today if you please join me for lunch at the Hôtel du Paris...' " Richard Stern, Erinnerungsblätter an Julius Stern, p. 50. If Stern is, indeed, Meyerbeer's correspondent, the present letter may be safely dated to 1843-44.. 1 page. Small folio (122 x 210 mm.), cut from a larger leaf). [?Paris], "Sunday morning," [?1843-44]. In black ink on personal letterhead with embossed monogram at head. In German (with translation). Meyerbeer invites his unidentified correspondent, addressed "Geehrter Herr und Landsmann" (Esteemed Sir and Countryman), to a concert by Hector Berlioz: "Herr Berlioz has been so kind to send me two tickets for his concert tonight. If you agree to share his gift with me, I will be even happier because I will also have the pleasure of being your neighbor. After the concert I want to introduce you to Berlioz if you have not already met him." Slightly worn; creased at folds and overall; several very small ink stains; left margin with small chip, trimmed with partial loss to monogram; "Meyerbeer" in another hand to blank verso.
