- 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemp. grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [.]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf. Atabey 1134). - Occasional slight duststaining near margins, but a good, untrimmed and wide-margined copy, the central bifolium remaining uncut. Fück 144 (note 377). Bibliothèque de Sacy III, 4781f. OCLC 25217438. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Il Botanico coltivatore. Opera di G.L.M. du Mont de Courset recata in Italiano dall'ab Girlamo Romano

Padova: Tipografia e Fonderia, 1819-, 1820. 12 volumes, octavo, a fresh fine set in the original printed blue paper wrappers, some wear at spines and evidence of earlier tape repairs, early Milanese bookseller's advertisement to front, very good. A most appealing set of the uncommon Italian translation of Dumont de Courset's important work of botanical instruction. The existence of an Italian edition is firm evidence of the centrality of Le Botaniste Cultivateur in European practice, and shows clearly the enduring impact of the Parisian gardens, notably Malmaison and Dumont de Courset's own garden at Boulogne-sur-Mer.This Italian edition is based on the revised second French edition of 1811, devised so as to provide a more detailed overview of the "plante straniere naturalizzate ed indigene coltivate in Francia, in Austria, in Italia, ed in Inghilterra." The notice of exotics is of course particularly significant, not least those from "Nuova Olanda". There had been an earlier German edition based on the first edition of 1802-1805, but this Italian edition is the only contemporary edition of the complete and revised work.

Rare handbill advertising the sale of skull skulls

[Edinburgh]: circa, 1820. a few marks. Printed handbill, 11 x 14 cm., untrimmed; very good. Rare handbill or advertisement for the firm of Luke O'Neil, announcing that the Edinburgh-based statuary company "respectfully begs leave to intimate to the public, that he supplies correct casts of the human head, indicating the situation of the organs of the different faculties, at the following prices: in stucco, 3s; in bronze, or terracota, 5s. (2s. additional for a packing box)".This is an intriguing insight into the development of popular phrenology, not least because O'Neil later offered casts of the skulls of at least three different Australian Aborigines, most significantly that of Carnambaygal, who had openly resisted the European. In April 1816 a group including Carnambaygal was ambushed and killed by a detachment of the 46th Regiment under the command of Major James Wallis, and his head harvested by Lieutenant Parker, who forwarded it to Hill who in turn sent it to Edinburgh. At the time of the publication of this work the skull was in the charge of Sir George Mackenzie of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society. The handbill concludes with the following offer "A printed Index of the Organs may be had separately, price 6d."

Panckouke. Paris. No date. Ca. 1820. - Copper plate engraving (uncolored), image approximately 23 1/2 x 24 1/4 inches on sheet size 27 1/2 x 40 inches, centerfold as issued. Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly outside plate area). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. A double page image - a topographical map showing the Valley of the Kings and surrounding environs. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 77 from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued.

Liberation of Kossuth from Kutahya, September 1st 1851

Artist: Gildemeister C; Issued in: New York; date: 1820 - Artist: Gildemeister C.; Issued in: New York; date: 1820; - Condition: Stains; View of the liberation of Lajos (Louis) Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva (1802 Ð 1894). He was a Hungarian lawyer, journalist, politician and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848Ð49. He was widely honored during his lifetime, including in the United Kingdom and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. Kossuth's bronze bust can be found in the United States Capitol with the inscription: Father of Hungarian Democracy, Hungarian Statesman, Freedom Fighter, 1848Ð1849. Kossuth followed the ideas of the French nation state ideology, which was a ruling liberal idea of his era. Accordingly he considered and regarded everybody as Hungarian -regardless of their mother tongue and ethnic ancestry - who lived in the territory of Hungary. He even quoted King Stephen I of Hungary's admonition: A nation of one language and the same customs is weak and fragile_. Kossuth's ideas stand on the enlightened Western European type liberal nationalism. He watched with anxiety every opportunity of freeing his country from Austria. An attempt to organize a Hungarian legion during the Crimean War was stopped but in 1859 he entered into negotiations with Napoleon III, left England for Italy and began the organization of a Hungarian legion, which was to make a descent on the coast of Dalmatia. The Peace of Villafranca made this impossible. Now there is a Kossuth Museum in KŸtahya, Turkey.

New York state: no publisher/printer Folio (34 cm, 12.75"). [1] f. (verso blank).. 1820 A wall posting of the Democratic-Republican party supporting incumbent DeWitt Clinton for Governor of New York in the 1820 elections against Vice-President Daniel D. Tompkins, the candidate of the Tammany-Virginia wing of the party. The document is a direct reply to the anti-Clinton Federal Bucktail Address (signed on 14 April 1820) and its signatories, a group of 40 men known as the "high-minded Federalists." Named members include John Duer and Rufus King. Of particular interest is the author's contention that the group misrepresented the nature of their opposition to the War of 1812. Signed in type: "No Time Server. April 19th, 1820." Several lines of text at the base of the document are headed "The Seminole Federalists," an unflattering soubriquet given to the faction of Federalists who opposed the Clinton administration. This section is signed in type, "Red-Jacket. As issued, with some later folds. Inch-long tear within first line of text, costing one word and portions of two or three letters, without affecting sense. Tear above center fold snaking five lines of text, touching letters from seven words without costing any text.       Artist: Engelmann Godefroy; Issued in: Paris; date: c 1820 - Artist: Engelmann, Godefroy; Issued in: Paris; date: c. 1820; - Condition: ; View of the harbour of Rio de Janeiro.Godefroy Engelmann was a 19th-century Franco-German lithographer and chromolithographer. Godefroy Engelmann was born in 1788 in MŸhlhausen, a small town near the France/Switzerland/Germany border. At the time of his birth Mulhouse was a free German republic associated with the Swiss Confederation, but was annexed by France 10 years later. He died in that same town in 1839, from a tumor in his neck. Engelmann trained in Switzerland and France at La Rochelle and Bordeaux, and he studied painting and sketching in Jean-Baptiste RegnaultÕs atelier in Paris. In the summer of 1814 he travelled to Munich, Germany to study lithography, a German invention. The following spring, he founded La SociŽtŽ Lithotypique de Mulhouse. In June 1816 he opened a workshop in Paris. Engelmann is largely credited with bringing lithography to Franc and later, commercializing chromolithography. In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results. Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin SŽverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, ÇVoyages pittoresques et romantiques dans lÕancienne FranceÈ. Engelmann's Paris printing company, Engelmann et Graf was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

In the foreground ships at the lake MŠlaren. After the Ice Age, at around 8,000 BC, there had already been vast migrations towards the present-day Stockholm area, but as temperatures dropped, inhabitants moved away towards the South. Thousands of years later, as the ground thawed, the climate became tolerable, and the lands became fertile, some life moved back to the North. At the intersection of the Baltic Sea and lake MŠlaren is an archipelago site where the Old Town of Stockholm was first occupied in about 1000 AD by Vikings. Vikings had a positive trade impact on the land because of the trade routes they created.

Macedo, so vehement on the subject of book collecting, was expelled from the Augustinian Order for - among other misdemeanors - the systematic theft of books. The editor of the @Jornal, José Agostinho de Macedo (1761-1831), was a prolific writer of prose and verse, best known for his pamphleteering: "Ponderous and angry like a lesser Samuel Johnson, he bullies and crushes his opponents in the raciest vernacular . his idiomatic and vigorous prose will always be read with pleasure" (Bell, @Portuguese Literature p. 282). Macedo was also well known for his arrogance in literary matters: he condemned as worthless Homer's poems, which he had never read in the original, and believed his own epic @Gama, 1811 (reworked and published as @O Oriente, 1814), could have taught Camões how @Os Lusiadas should have been written. Toward the end of his life Macedo became Court preacher and chronicler, and a friend of D.
