Costume di Villabadessa colonia Albanese. Provincia di Teramo nel Regno di Napoli

Acquarelli su carta, firmati in basso a destra. Dimensioni 145x190 circa In the XIX century, Michela De Vito became quite a famous artist. She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. "A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subejct more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe this artist. This gentleness is quite evident in her figures and in their clothes. Watercolour on paper, signed on lower right. High qualità works, in excellent condition, surrounded by a modern golden frame. Size 145x190. Napoli Naples

Edfou (Apollinopolis Magna) - Vue Générale

School-boy's diversions: describing many new and popular sports; with Proper Directions for engaging in them. Embellished with three neat engravings, from designs by r. stennett

London: Printed for Dean & Munday, [1820?]. [3], 6-54pp. With folding engraved frontispiece and two further engraved plates. Sewn within printed paper wrappers, with a list of 'Elegant Juvenile Books' to lower wrapper. Slight loss to spine, patches of surface loss and ink-spotting to wrappers. Some damp-staining and a little marking to plates, occasional marking to text. From the Selbourne library, with neat ink-stamp to verso of title and foot of p.51. A rare survival in the original wraps of this popular regency guide to childhood sports and, predominantly, games, The frontispiece depicting the playing of 'Hare & Hounds', 'Flying a Kite', 'Whip Top', 'Sailing Boat', 'Trundling Hoop'. 'Devil on Two Sticks' and two further plates illustrating 'Curling or Hockey' and 'Skipping Rope, Trap and Ball'. The text itself begins with a more than 2pp description of 'the noble-game of Cricket...a game so universally known in England, that scarcely a boy can be found unacquainted with it', which can be 'played either double or single'. This, combined with the relatively short shrift given to 'Foot-ball...now used principally by the vulgar, yet...by no means unworthy the attention of superior boys', suggest a middle-class target audience. It was issued as here, under the printer Dean & Munday's imprint, but also under that of A.K. Newman of the Minerva Press. Otherwise apparently identical, both editions with plate imprint date of April 1820, this copy appears much scarcer, with COPAC and OCLC locating two copies (Oxford and Cornell) other than this, being from the Selbourne collection and therefore ex-Birmingham University. . 8vo.

Album with 60 mounted autographs by European rulers, noblemen and military men.

Prob. assembled in Great Yarmouth, 1820s; contents date from c. 1525-1775. - 12 unnumbered ff. (1 blank), 60 numbered ff., 64 blank ff. With 56 armorial drawings in watercolors (1 in India ink) and 40 decorative grisaille cartouches washed in India ink. Late 18th c. calf with gilt spine, gilt-tooled border on boards and star-shaped center panel on both boards. Leading edges gilt. Oblong 12mo. Remarkable collection of autographs from the library of the English botanist and antiquary Dawson Turner (1775-1858) with his autogr. ownership entry on first leaf (dated 1825). Dawson, who had published on botany and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1802, turned his interests to antiquities in the 1820s. He and his children were taught to draw by their good friend, the renowned Norfolk artist John Sell Cotman, who resided in Yarmouth from 1812 to 1823. - The signatures, mostly clipped from letters and other documents, are from historic French, German and Dutch personages, including William, Prince of Orange (1533-84); Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736); Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, commander of the Imperial forces in the Thirty Years' War (1559-1632); Cornelius Jansen, theologian and later cardinal, founder of Jansenism (1585-1638); Philip de Montmorency, Count of Hoorn (1524-68), and Lamoral Count of Egmont (1522-68, opponents to Spanish rule in the Netherlands, executed); Johann Casimir, Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1564-1633); August the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, founder of Wolfenbüttel's Herzog August Library (1579-1666); Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, Elector Palatine (1658-1716); André-Hercule de Fleury, Cardinal (1653-1743); Fredrick, landgrave of Hesse-Eschwege (1617-1655); Floris van Pallant, Count of Culemborg (1537-98); Froben Ferdinand zu Fürstenberg-Mößkirch (1664-1741), and many more. Most names are accompanied by a skilled armorial illustration in full colour painted on the opposite page; forty of the signatures are bordered by decorative washed cartouches with specially designed figurated, landscape and allegorical ornaments, sometimes rather ingeniously incorporating the signature's pen flourishes and very likely prepared by members of the art-loving and gifted Turner family, possibly with help from Cotman. - Occasional slight brownstaining; book block loosened. Corners bumped; defects to upper spine end and lower third of spine. A remarkable (and remarkably presented) ensemble of autographs, forming a striking early 19th-century showpiece.

- 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemp. grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [.]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf. Atabey 1134). - Occasional slight duststaining near margins, but a good, untrimmed and wide-margined copy, the central bifolium remaining uncut. Fück 144 (note 377). Bibliothèque de Sacy III, 4781f. OCLC 25217438. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Il Botanico coltivatore. Opera di G.L.M. du Mont de Courset recata in Italiano dall'ab Girlamo Romano

Padova: Tipografia e Fonderia, 1819-, 1820. 12 volumes, octavo, a fresh fine set in the original printed blue paper wrappers, some wear at spines and evidence of earlier tape repairs, early Milanese bookseller's advertisement to front, very good. A most appealing set of the uncommon Italian translation of Dumont de Courset's important work of botanical instruction. The existence of an Italian edition is firm evidence of the centrality of Le Botaniste Cultivateur in European practice, and shows clearly the enduring impact of the Parisian gardens, notably Malmaison and Dumont de Courset's own garden at Boulogne-sur-Mer.This Italian edition is based on the revised second French edition of 1811, devised so as to provide a more detailed overview of the "plante straniere naturalizzate ed indigene coltivate in Francia, in Austria, in Italia, ed in Inghilterra." The notice of exotics is of course particularly significant, not least those from "Nuova Olanda". There had been an earlier German edition based on the first edition of 1802-1805, but this Italian edition is the only contemporary edition of the complete and revised work.

Jahrhundert stark an. Rare handbill advertising the sale of skull skulls

[Edinburgh]: circa, 1820. a few marks. Printed handbill, 11 x 14 cm., untrimmed; very good. Rare handbill or advertisement for the firm of Luke O'Neil, announcing that the Edinburgh-based statuary company "respectfully begs leave to intimate to the public, that he supplies correct casts of the human head, indicating the situation of the organs of the different faculties, at the following prices: in stucco, 3s; in bronze, or terracota, 5s. (2s. additional for a packing box)".This is an intriguing insight into the development of popular phrenology, not least because O'Neil later offered casts of the skulls of at least three different Australian Aborigines, most significantly that of Carnambaygal, who had openly resisted the European. In April 1816 a group including Carnambaygal was ambushed and killed by a detachment of the 46th Regiment under the command of Major James Wallis, and his head harvested by Lieutenant Parker, who forwarded it to Hill who in turn sent it to Edinburgh. At the time of the publication of this work the skull was in the charge of Sir George Mackenzie of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society. The handbill concludes with the following offer "A printed Index of the Organs may be had separately, price 6d."

Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly outside plate area). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. A double page image - a topographical map showing the Valley of the Kings and surrounding environs. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 77 from Volume II of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued.

Liberation of Kossuth from Kutahya, September 1st 1851

Artist: Gildemeister C; Issued in: New York; date: 1820 - Artist: Gildemeister C.; Issued in: New York; date: 1820; - Condition: Stains; View of the liberation of Lajos (Louis) Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva (1802 Ð 1894). He was a Hungarian lawyer, journalist, politician and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848Ð49. He was widely honored during his lifetime, including in the United Kingdom and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. Kossuth's bronze bust can be found in the United States Capitol with the inscription: Father of Hungarian Democracy, Hungarian Statesman, Freedom Fighter, 1848Ð1849. Kossuth followed the ideas of the French nation state ideology, which was a ruling liberal idea of his era. Accordingly he considered and regarded everybody as Hungarian -regardless of their mother tongue and ethnic ancestry - who lived in the territory of Hungary. He even quoted King Stephen I of Hungary's admonition: A nation of one language and the same customs is weak and fragile_. Kossuth's ideas stand on the enlightened Western European type liberal nationalism. He watched with anxiety every opportunity of freeing his country from Austria. An attempt to organize a Hungarian legion during the Crimean War was stopped but in 1859 he entered into negotiations with Napoleon III, left England for Italy and began the organization of a Hungarian legion, which was to make a descent on the coast of Dalmatia. The Peace of Villafranca made this impossible. Now there is a Kossuth Museum in KŸtahya, Turkey.
