        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Nicolovius"). Berlin, 10. X. 1820.

1820. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). Lisena, in Stanzen u. [...]" (Berlin 11. VII. 1822).

A Full Report Of The Trial Of Her Majesty Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Queen of England, Before The Peers Of Great Britain

London - T. Dolby 1820 - The scarce first issue of the parliamentary report ofa trial which rocked the British political establishment. In his attempt to deprive his estranged wife of her title, the newly crowned George IV unwittingly turned her into a focus for anti-government and anti-monachical sentiment. The trial of the presumptiveQueen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response,Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy. The first volume contains the prosecution, the second the defence. This parliamentary report was originally supressed, resulting in copies of this first issue being scarce. The pagination carriesfrom the Dolby Parliamentary Register. The relevant sections have essentially been excised and bound into a discrete work. Volume two is lacking a title page, and is missing pages 1638-1671, with pages 827-858 from volume one apparently bound in instead by mistake. While the pagination is occasionally irregular, this appears to be the only loss. Condition: In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the edges and spines. There is some light marking to the boards. Internally a little age toned with some light foxing here and there. The misplaced pages in volume 2 (827-858) have been poorly trimmed. The text is unafected. N. B. the pagination is occasionally irregular, however, loss appears to beconfined to pages 1638-1671 in volume 2. Firmly bound. Overall: GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1820 - [London] , c.1820, 320 x 410mm. A view of one of the most famous battles of the American War of Independence which resulted in a Pyrrhic victory for the English. engraved by A. Kessler after the famous painting 'The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill' by J. Trumbull . As a soldier in the American Revolutionary War, Trumbull rendered a particular service at Boston by sketching plans of the British works, and witnessed the famous Battle of Bunkers Hill. He was appointed second personal aide to General George Washington, and in June 1776 deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates, but resigned from the army in 1777. In 1780 he traveled to London where he studied under Benjamin West, who suggested to him that he paint small pictures of the War of Independence and miniature portraits, of which he produced about 250 in his lifetime. In 1784 he was again in London working under West, in whose studio he painted his Battle of Bunker Hill and Death of Montgomery.

        [Hamse-i Sani-zade]. Kostantiniye (Istanbul), Tabhane-yi Sahane / Dar üt-Tibaat ül-Amire (Imperial School of Medicine), 1235 AH [= 1820 AD].

1820. Folio (208 x 289 mm). 3 parts in 1 volume: 4 pp. of prelims (blank, alif, ba, gim); 131, (1 blank) pp. and 35, (1 blank) pp. (bound alternately), with 56 etched plates; 39, (1 blank) pp.; 283, (1 blank) pp. Contemp. half calf with gilstamped spine and marbled covers. First edition of the pioneering Ottoman physician Sanizade's (1771-1826) medical compendium: the first three books (on anatomy, physiology, and internal medicine) of what would later be known as "Sani-zade's Canon of Five", "Kitâb ül-evvel fi t-tesrihât" ("Mir'âtül-ebdân fî tesrih-i a'zâil-insân"), "Kitab üs-sânî fi 't-tabîyat", and "Kitâb üs-sâlis Miyâr ül-etibbâ". This was one of the earliest Turkish medical works to draw thoroughly on western, Paracelsian science: indeed, it is modelled on and partly translated from Italian and German sources, such as Anton Störck, Bartolomeo Eustachi, Gabriele Fallopio, and Costanzo Varolio, reproducing anatomical illustrations from a variety of sources including Vesalius. - "[B]y and large Ottoman medicine remained [...] attached to its Galenic roots. [...] Real paradigmatic change began to appear only with the upheavals of 19th-century reforms, when translations and adaptations of new European knowledge made their way to the core of the medical profession. One of the first books to spark this revolution was Ataullah Sanizade's compendium 'Hamse-i sanizade', a series of five books published in Ottoman Turkish from 1820 onward, incorporating new medical knowledge from Europe. Sanizade was a brilliant and innovative physician and theorist (as well as musician, astronomer, and historian) who did much to integrate new medical knowledge with the old. His views on medicine encountered much opposition, mainly because of his support for surgery-based study of anatomy. As a result his request to dedicate his chef d'oeuvre to Sultan Mahmud II was denied. In time, however, the compendium came to replace the earlier canonic texts, and was fondly named 'kanun-i sanizade' (Sanizade's canon), referring, of course, to the old master's 'Qanun'. Although the compendium formally adhered to the humoral system and other concepts of ancient medicine, it was here that blood circulation was mentioned for the first time as a scientific concept and as part of a different medical theory. Some of the terminology included in this book formed the basis for a new medical profession that was beginning to take shape" (D. Ze'evi, Producing Desire [2006], p. 20f.). A five-volume Arabic edition appeared at Bulaq in 1828 by direct order of Mehmet Ali. - Part 1 bound as follows (agreeing with the copy in the BSB Munich): 4 pp. of prelims (blank, alif, ba, gim); 3, (1) pp., (2 plates), 2 pp. [index], 5-34 pp., (17 plates), 3-22 pp. [index], 35-68 pp., (9 plates), 23-35 pp. [index; pp. 25-28 numbered 3-6 in error], 1 bl. p., 69-94 pp., (12 plates), 37-48 pp. [index], 95-100 pp., (6 plates), 49-55 pp. [index], 1 bl. p., 101-106 pp., (3 plates), 57-60 pp. [index], 107-120 pp., (5 plates), 61-70 pp. [index], 121-128 pp., (2 plates), 71-80 pp. [index], 129-131 pp., 1 bl. p. Some dampstaining throughout, more prominently so in several plates. In all, a good copy of this rare work, the only edition published during the author's lifetime. OCLC 608102180.

Three-quarter length portrait of a seated John Clare, facing left.

Image 19 x 16.5cm; the background varnished, with sl. crazing in places. In a handsome contemporary gilt frame, glazed, approx. 31.5 x 28cm, 4.5cm deep. The frame is a little rubbed, with chipping & repair to small section of ornamentation, upper left corner.Commissioned by Clare's publisher John Taylor in 1820, the original oil painting prompted a contemporary art critic to exclaim "What life in the eyes! What ardent thirst for excellence, and what susceptibility to the outward expression in the quivering lips". This smaller version shows a more romanticised version of the poet than is depicted in the original, having a gentler, slimmer, and less ruddy face. The portrait in oils was engraved by Edward Scriven as the frontispiece to The Village Minstrel. A pencil sketch and an 1860s photograph, together with a number of sketches in the Northampton Museum, record Clare after 1840, but the Hilton portrait is the only image of him as a young man. According to Professor Jonathan Bate, the biographer of Clare, this watercolour is one of three executed by Hilton at about the same time as the original oil - one for Clare's patron Lord Radstock, one for his friend Mrs Emmerson and one for his father, Parker Clare. If it was owned by the last, the portrait hung in Clare's cottage for many years. Whether the other two watercolours survived is unknown. The picture clearly became 'lost' at some point in the nineteenth century: a printed label on the back of the frame states: 'A Gentleman (James West?), three-quarter length portrait ...'. William Hilton, R.A. (1786-1839) was, like Haydon, a 'history painter' on the grand scale as well as a portraitist (following his father, William Hilton, the Elder). His acquaintances included Keats (his portrait of the poet after Severn hangs in Keats' House), Lamb and Clare.

        THE CLUB-ROOM

Unbound, marginal stains to a few leaves of No. 1; light browning and wear to corners of No. 1. Complete in themselves, but volumes 1 and II only of IV volumes published of this rarity. Together with an octavo mailing envelope with the return address of the Seven Gables Bookshop, in New York City; older price of $7.50 is written in pencil on envelope. Housed in a handsome half leather slipcase , with chemise. NOTE: The Club-Room was founded by nine men, mostly Harvard graduates, in Boston in June 1818. There were eventually 24 members, who met to dine, to talk and to read papers they had written. Prescott attended club meetings for more than 40 years. William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was clearly, one of the greatest American historians. The subject that fascinated him for more than 30 years was the rise and decline of the Spanish Empire. Born into a prosperous family, he graduated from Harvard in 1814, but poor health and failing eyesight discouraged him from a career in business, or law. His good friend, Washington Irving, directed him to his life's work: writing the history of 16th century Spain and its colonies. He is best known for "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (1843) and History of the Conquest of Peru" (1847). [Bal., volume 7, p. 180] See our listing under Prescott's works.       1820. 1 S. Gr.-8vo.

Autograph letter signed. Neuwied, 29. III. 1820.

1820. 2 pp. on double leaf. 8vo. Mounted on flyleaf of: The same. Reise nach Brasilien in den Jahren 1815 bis 1817. Frankfurt/M., Heinrich Ludwig Brönner, 1820-1821. 2 pts. in 1 vol. Large 4to. XXXIV, (2), 380, (6) pp. XVIII, 345, (1) pp. With 19 engr. plates. Contemp. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to attractively gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Interesting letter (in German) to an unidentified professor, accompanying the first edition of his work on Brazil. Very likely to his former academic teacher in Göttingen, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), under whom the author had read natural history in 1811-12: "Dearest professor, please accept this small token of my deep gratitude and veneration, and exercise forbearance when looking upon this product borne forth not by a scholar, but by a mere dilettante of descriptive zoology [...] The printer has retained a large number of obvious errors which unfortunately were in the manuscript, by fault of the copyist [...]". - Following the example set by the Humboldts, the Rhenish Prince Max zu Wied made significant contributions to botany, zoology, and ethnology through two long and well-documented expeditions, lasting several years. He led an expedition to Brazil in 1815-17, studying flora, fauna, and the native population. The prince was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Jena in 1858. - Letter shows slight edge damage to centerfold (no loss to text); some browning and traces of original folds. Book variously browned due to paper; the beautiful binding is very well preserved. Without the separately published plate volume. Sabin 47018. Borba de Moraes II, 43. Bosch I, 321. Baldus 1762. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1820-1829.

1820. A total of 36 vols.: 26 text vols. (4to) and 10 atlas vols. (elephant folio). With coloured frontispiece and 899 engraved plates and maps, many double-page-sized and folded. Slightly later English half calf, professionally repaired in places. Second edition of this monumental work (the first was published from 1809 onwards), the first comprehensive description of ancient and modern Egypt. Commissioned by Napoleon during his Egyptian campaign between 1798 and 1801, this encompassing historical, archaeological, art-historical, and natural-historical account of the country was realised through the efforts of the Institut d'Egypte in Cairo. Its influence was enormous, establishing Egyptology as an intellectual discipline and nurturing a passion for Egyptian art throughout the Western World. Edited by some of the leading intellectual figures in France, the Description also includes contributions from celebrated artists such as Jacques Barraband, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, Jules-César Savigny and others. More than 150 scholars and scientists and some 2000 artists, designers and engravers were involved in its preparation. The success of the publication was such that work on the second edition (known as the "Pancoucke edition") began before the first was completed. The text was expanded into a greater number of volumes, now printed in a smaller format; new pulls were taken from the plates, and these were bound with many of the large-format plates folded into the new, reduced dimensions. - A splendid, clean copy, complete with all the plates. An incomplete copy of the second edition of the Description de l'Egypte sold at Sotheby's for £68,750 in 2016. Blackmer 526. Gay 1999. Brunet II, 617. Graesse II, 366. Cf. Monglond VIII, 268-343 (for the first edition). Nissen, BBI 2234. Nissen, ZBI 4608. Heritage Library, Islamic Treasures, s. v. "Art" (illustration).

1820. 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemp. grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [...]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf. Atabey 1134). - Occasional slight duststaining near margins, but a good, untrimmed and wide-margined copy, the central bifolium remaining uncut. Fück 144 (note 377). Bibliothèque de Sacy III, 4781f. OCLC 25217438.

1820. Large 4to (222 x 253 mm.). 2 parts in one volume. XII, 194, (2) pp. (4), 147, (3) pp., all lithographed save for 1 page. With 6 lithographed plates (4 folding). Original temporary grey boards as issued. Rare; one of the first Sanskrit works published in Germany. Lithographed throughout (with the exception of a single letterpress page at the beginning of part 2) and published at the author's expense: "Alles über Umdruck lithographisch gedruckt" (Winkler). Contains the earliest (partial) edition of the Bhagavadgita (in part 2), pre-dating August Wilhelm Schlegel's edition - admittedly better printed - by several years. The former Benedictine monk Frank (1770-1840), an admirer of Persian philosophy, studied oriental languages in Paris and London. In 1821 he took the chair of Indian and Persian at Würzburg University and went to Munich in 1826 as Professor of Sanskrit. In spite of his pioneering work, he exerted little influence on the development of linguistics and Sanskrit studies, probably due to his penchant for mysticism and his laboured, nebulous prose (cf. ADB). - Boards worn; some browning and staining as common. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Graesse II, 629. Winkler 224. ADB VII, 260.

Map of the Hills, Rivers, Canals and Principal Roads of England and Wales Upon a Scale of Six Miles to an Inch. Exhibiting Most of the Places Whose Situation has been ascertained by the Stations and Intersections of the Trigonometrical Survey.

1820 - London, 1813-1820. Original colour. Four sheets, dissected and laid on linen in four sections as issued, total if joined 1820mm x 14600mm, with marbled chemise. An large and detailed map of England and Wales, with the counties delineated with fine original hand colour. Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was at the forefrond of the new, more scientific approach to mapping, reducing the ornament and concentrating on exactitude. However the quality of the colour means this is very striking map. Originally published in 1813, this example has been undated for re-issue in 1820, when Arrowsmith became 'Hydrographer to the King', when George IV became king instead of Prince Regent.

        METHODE DE LYRE et Romances.

s.l.n.d. (c.1820). - MANUSCRIT in-4 oblong. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Ladies at Leisure

Canton 2nd half of 19th century - A set of 6 watercolour and gouache studies on pith paper, framed by a turquoise silk ribbon and laid on paper; glazed and framed. A lovely group of interior scenes exclusively involving women, possibly ladies in waiting, engaged in recreational activities. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light, they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. The sheets are dried, trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect. Very fine detail could be achieved but pith did not lend itself to the flat wash of colour favoured for European watercolours. Carl Crossman in his book The Decorative Arts of the China Trade (originally published under the title The China Trade) gives an excellent list of export painters with a note of those known to have painted on pith. These include Tingqua, Sunqua and Youqua. From 1757 until 1842 Canton was the only Chinese port open to trade with the west and it is no surprise that of the eight studios identified by Crossman as producing works on pith, six were in Canton. It seems that the 1830s and 1840s may have been the heyday of pith painting. The international trading bases, the waterfront 'factories' on the 'Hongs' in Canton, where they were produced, were partially burnt during the First Opium War (1839-41) and totally destroyed in a fire of 1856. The foreign trading companies then moved to Honan and subsequently put up splendid new offices on reclaimed land at Shamian Island, a little up river.
