The Genteel Recreation; or the Pleasure of Angling, A Poem. With a Dialogue betwen Piscatory and Corydon.

1820 - Small 8vo., in full red morocco, boards with double gilt fillet and blind rules, central gilt rococco style cartouche of fish (from an known ornament for Thomas Gosden), spine with raised bands bordered in gilt and blind, lettered in gilt, gilt ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt. Printed thoughout on vellum. Second edition, after the very rare privately printed edition of 1700. Limited edition of "not more that 100 copies", this one of only 2 copies printed on vellum, with printed limitation thus on verso of title-page, and with an inserted sheet at the front with a manuscript note "Only two copies of this book printed on vellum expressly for Mr Simonds Higgs of Kensington and Mr T. Gosden of St. Martin's Lane" The appearance of the Gosden tool on the boards would suggest that this was the copy given to Thomas Gosden. However, in the sale catalogue for the library of noted bibliophile William Simonds Higgs (Sotheby's 1830), lot 58 comprised this work which sold for 3 guineas. Frustratingly the binding is not described but there is a note of a manuscript leaf that is identically worded to that in this copy. Each copy may have had matching manuscript leaves, or Gosden may have also bound Simonds Higg's copy. Whichever copy this is, it nonetheless is a real rarity, with a fine provenance coming from one of two important piscatorial libraries. The original 1700 edition is a noted rarity in the canon of fishing books, the last copy at auction fetching £20,000 in 2012. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

There were eventually 24 members, who met to dine, to talk and to read papers they had written. Prescott attended club meetings for more than 40 years. William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was clearly, one of the greatest American historians. The subject that fascinated him for more than 30 years was the rise and decline of the Spanish Empire. Born into a prosperous family, he graduated from Harvard in 1814, but poor health and failing eyesight discouraged him from a career in business, or law. His good friend, Washington Irving, directed him to his life's work: writing the history of 16th century Spain and its colonies. He is best known for "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (1843) and History of the Conquest of Peru" (1847). [Bal., volume 7, p. 180] See our listing under Prescott's works.

Bibliothecae Regiae Catalogus. [Compiled by Frederick Augusta Barnard]

      - Mezzotint frontis. port. of George III (a little foxed), arms on each title, & two engraved views of the library serving as head- & tailpieces. Five vols. Large folio, cont. red straight-grained morocco (minor scuffing), panelled & tooled in gilt with centerpiece stamped monogram "GR" surmounted by a crown on covers, spines gilt, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: W. Bulmer & W. Nicol, 1820-29. The catalogue, "sumptuously printed" by Bulmer, of the magnificent library of King George III (1738-1820), donated to the nation by his son, George IV. This is a royal copy, having belonged to Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and the fifth son of George III, who became King of Hanover in 1837. It is superbly bound in red straight-grained morocco and printed on paper superior to other sets. "The kings of England had, from the end of the fifteenth century, always shown a certain taste for fine books, especially for the handsomer volumes of their own day.A new library was started in 1765 by King George III, when he purchased for 10,000 pounds the valuable collection of incunabula (with a few manuscripts) brought together by Joseph Smith (1682-1770), the British Consul at Venice. "George III continued adding to his library for nearly fifty years, buying with considerable discrimination at all the notable sales of the period; he secured the best books at the West, Ratcliffe and Askew auctions, built up a magnificent collection of English plays, and kept on right up to the Roxburghe sale (1812). His usual agents were Messrs Nicol, the booksellers, but he seems to have obtained from the Continent some extremely valuable incunabula by the assistance of one Horn of Ratisbon, a great despoiler of the German convents. "There is a sumptuously printed but hastily compiled catalogue of which copies are seldom met with."-De Ricci, pp. 55-56. "As a boy George III had received an excellent education. He learned Latin well enough to be able to read the classics; French and German; history, geography, and the British political system; mathematics and elementary science; art, architecture, and music. After he left the schoolroom he continued his education under the Earl of Bute, an inspiring if somewhat pedantic tutor.Under his tuition the King developed wide cultural interests, a reverence for scholarship, and the instinct of a collector. "The King's aim was.to acquire a library which contained every book which an eighteenth-century scholar could desire. It was a library to be used, not simply to be admired. It was, as far as it could be in the eighteenth century, a universal library. It is rich in library catalogues. In addition to the catalogues of British libraries, there are catalogues from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, and Russia. There are over five hundred sale catalogues, most British and most with the prices marked. "It was the King's wish that a catalogue should be published, but he postponed this as long as possible. When it became clear after 1812 that the King would never recover, Queen Charlotte and the Prince Regent urged the preparation of a catalogue. It was compiled by Barnard and published between 1820 and 1829 in five folio volumes. It was never offered for sale but copies were presented to heads of state and the great libraries in the United Kingdom and on the Continent. It is today an extremely rare book."John Brooke, "The Library of King George III" in The Yale University Library Gazette, Vol. 52, No. 1 (July 1977), pp. 33-45. "Frederick Barnard had begun the catalogue of the books and manuscripts of the King's Library while it was at Buckingham House. The catalogue was completed.by Barnard and his staff for the Trustees of the British Museum and printed in five volumes between 1820 and 1829.Very few copies were printed, none for sale, and they are now very rare."-Paintin, The King's Library, p. 22.         Nauffrage de MM. de Laborde sur les canots de la Peyrouse au Port des François dans la Californie. Dédié à Monsieur Alexandre de Laborde leur frère, par son tres humble Serviteur Ostervald l'aîné, Editeur et Proprietaire

Paris: Ostervald, 1820. In good condition.. Black and white lithograph on paper, 540 x 720 mm (paper size 560 x 760 mm); mounted, and in handsome modern frame. Rare and dramatic separately published image of the La Pérouse expedition. This powerful portrayal of the expedition's boats in trouble in Alaskan waters does not derive from the official account of the La Pérouse expedition, but was prepared as a lithograph for the Parisian publisher Ostervald by Prot and Dissart after the famous large painting by Louis Philippe Crépin, "Naufrages des biscayennes au Port des Français". It shows the expedition's barge and two longboats in terrible difficulties in the rushing waters of Alaska, surrounded by majestic snowy mountains.La Pérouse had arrived off the Alaskan coast from Hawaii, landing near Mount St. Elias in late June 1786. On 13 July 1786 three boats, carrying 21 men - 15 sailors and six officers - were lost in the heavy currents of the bay called "Port des Français" by La Pérouse, but now known as Lituya Bay.All 21 men were lost, but the greatest tragedy was seen by the public as the loss of the two brothers Laborde, the glamorous young naval officers, both of whom perished. Such is celebrity: they are identified in the print's caption, and the publisher's dedication is to the third surviving brother. Their father, the wealthy banker Jean-Josephe de Laborde, was conspicuous in his grief and "erected a blue-turquoise marble rostral column beside a pool at his château de Méréville, decorated with 4 ships' bows, to glorify their virtues".During the month they had already spent in Lituya Bay the French gathered valuable ethnographic information on the local Tlingit population, and the glossary of their language is one of the important scientific results of the expedition. After the disaster La Pérouse, severely tested, changed his itinerary, deciding not to continue to the north but instead headed south toward Monterey in California.Louis-Philippe Crépin (1772-1851) was a painter of allegorical scenes, military subjects, landscapes and seascapes. A student of Vernet, Regnault and Hubert Robert, he went to sea himself, returning to Paris about 1796, when he showed for the first time at the Salon. With works like "Le Combat de la Bayonnaise contre la fregate anglaise l'Embuscade", he became the official painter of the Navy, even acquiring a studio within the ministry itself.

        Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine

1820 - (ACKERMANN, Rudolph) GERNING, Baron Johann Isaac von. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine, from Mentz to Cologne. London: R. Ackermann, 1820. Folio (11-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches), 20th-century full tan polished calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $11,000.First edition, first issue, of one of Ackermann's wonderful Picturesque Tours, beautifully illustrated with 24 hand-colored folio aquatints and large folding map. A lovely copy.In the history of book production "there is no more attractive figure than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books" (Prideaux, 120-23). One of Ackermann's most lucrative projects was his remarkable Picturesque Tours, a series of seven books produced between 1820-28. This is his Tour Along the Rhine, with beautifully hand-colored aquatints by Daniel Havell and Thomas Sutherland after paintings by Christian Georg Schutz, depicting views of Mentz, the Castle of Furstenberg, the Church of Johannes, Pfalz Castle and the town of Kaub, the salmon fishery at Lurley, Coblentz, Bornhofen, Cologne and other sites along the river. The plates were pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and disseminating fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuries. The folding map shows the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. With accompanying text by Baron von Gerning describing the history and culture of the area (first published in German in 1819, without illustrations). First issue, without plate numbers in the top right corners. Tooley notes that plates 2 and 3 have variants dated either September or October; Abbey argues persuasively that to call either state an issue "must remain doubtful," particularly given that large-paper copies have also been seen with the two plates dated October. At any rate, the quality of plates in either state are the same high standard; Abbey notes that "there are definitely some later issues of the book, and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these plates are poor and the coloring less good" (Abbey 217). This copy has plates 2 and 3 dated October, but most importantly none of the plates bear numbers in the upper right. Text watermarked 1817 and 1818; plates watermarked 1818 and 1819. Abbey, Travel 217. Prideaux, 337. Tooley 234. Title page neatly rehinged, plates fine and fresh, hand-coloring vivid; a few minor scuffs to binding. An excellent, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated work. [Attributes: First Edition]

A View of the Cove and Part of Sydney. New South Wales. Taken from Dawes Battery.

      R. Ackermann,, London: 1820 - This large print is the most important of the twelve views drawn to accompany his book "An Historical Account of New South Wales and Its Dependent Settlements; In Illustration of Twelve Views, Engraved by W. Preston, a Convict; from Drawings taken on the Spot, by Captain Wallis of the Forth-Sixth Regiment.", published in London by Ackerman in 1821. Although Wallis claimed the drawings as his own on the title page, the purchase of the original sketch album by the Mitchell Library in 2011 shows conclusively that the drawings were by the convict artist Joseph Lycett . The engraver Preston was also transported to Australia. The folklore surrounding this important work indicates that he engraved the views on the sheet-copper from the hulls of ships, as none other was available in New South Wales at the time. Wallis arrived with the 46th regiment, on the same ship which brought Joseph Lycett as a convict. Both Preston and Lycett were prisoners under Wallis in Newcastle where Wallis ran the penal settlement between 1816 and 1818. Lycett was to receive fame, and a pardon, for his famous work "Views of Australia". Engraved by W. Preston from an Original Drawing by Capt. Wallis 46th Regt. London Pubd. Septr. 1, 1820, at R. Ackermann's, 10 Strand. Copper engraving with later hand-color, image 56x 38 cms, with generous margins. "Wallis's book has a most important position in a collection of Australian plate books. It is the first book of general landscape views of early New South Wales, representing the first great celebration of the progress of the colony made under the civilising rule of Governor Macquarie and, indeed, of Wallis himself. It is also the first plate book, properly so called, to consist entirely of plates engraved in the colony by a colonial engraver". (Wantrup) Ferguson 842; Wantrup 217a.

83 Original Botanical Watercolours Plants Flowers & Funghi

A bound volume of original botanic illustrations including flowers plants and funghi Initials on the front free end paper look like E J [no further information on the artist] 81/85 [lacking four] pencil sketches finished in watercolour - the stubbs of the absent illustrations remain. [not all illustrated] each illustration is on one side of each page only. The paper watermarks vary, some pages as early as 1810 others 1820 / 21 - the end paper bear a partial watermark of 23 [1823]a fascinating selection of original artwork c1820 and before - it is not quite clear whether the volume was made up from the loose sketches or the volume of sheets was bound and subsequently used - the ink manuscript text along the bottom margin of one early sketch appears to have been closely cropped; most likely when bound, one or two sketches have an ink number in the top right hand corner and appear in no particular logical order - which lends weight to the fact they were once all loose pages, bound up together c1823. [each measures 192mm x 230mm] Each illustration is neatly titled in ink - most with both Latin and common names

        The Earth and Its Inhabitants

(Germany), 1820. A miniature globe covered with varnished paper showing the continents, hand-colored, accompanied by a 32-panel miniature folding panorama. Each panel shows an inhabitant of a different country in characteristic costume, hand-colored and labeled in English, German, and French. The panorama is anchored to the inside of the original green and orange cubical box with a printed, colored label. This charming educational toy is in fine condition, and has the most folding costume panels of any set we've encountered. The panorama, when folded, measures 1 7/8 inches (48mm) tall; the globe is approximately 1 5/8 inches (42mm) in diameter. Box shows some loss to trim and adhesive residue, as well as the previous owner's signature in ink to upper label; panorama and globe are fine.         Piazza del Popolo

Roma Rome 421 280
