[in Hebrew characters, transliterated at] Doz Nayye` Te`stame`nt fon De`m Me`ssyas.

[London]: Gedruckt bey A. Macintosh 8vo (18 cm; 7"). 591, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1820 In 1820 the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews (commonly known as the London Jews Society, or the L.J.S.) ? founded in 1809 ? undertook to supply German-speaking Jews with copies of the German Scriptures in Rabbinic character. With this object it employed Judah D'Allemand to transliterate Luther's version of the N.T., using Von Meyer's Frankfort edition of 1819" (Darlow & Moule). We have to admit that there is considerable disagreement as to whether the language of this N.T. is Yiddish, Judeo-German, or merely German in Hebrew characters. Different libraries have catalogued it differently; the majority say Yiddish. We take the middle ground of Judeo-German, that is, German-based Yiddish rather than Polish Yiddish. To us, this makes sense as the LJS published a Polish Yiddish N.T. the next year (i.e., 1821). Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate fewer than ten U.S. libraries reporting ownership. Recent marbled paper over boards, black leather gilt spine label. Scattered foxing, notably to first and last leaves; evidence of light use only. => A rather nice copy.

Ile de Philae. Vue Perspective du Temple de L'Ouest et de Plusieurs Autres Edifices.

Panckouke. Paris. Ca. 1820. - Copper plate engraving (uncolored), image approx. 16 x 24 inches on sheet approximately 21 x 28 inches. Very good condition: light scattered foxing (mainly outside image area), a few short tears to lower edge (image not affected). Publisher's blindstamp at top right. This very large, finely engraved image is plate 24 from Volume I of the Antiquities section of the monumental publication "Description de L'Egypte," which documented the research of the "savants" who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). The full title, translated into English reads "Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Army" hinting at the varied purposes of this foray into the Middle East. The European demand for information about Egypt and its glorious monuments led to the publication of two editions of the work, with engravings pulled from the same printing plates; this is from the second edition, uncolored as issued. Shown is a panoramic view of the Birth House and several other structures found on the Island of Philae in Upper Egypt; the quality of the engraving powerfully evokes the splendor of this beautiful edifice.

[ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL RELATING TO THE SHIPPING BUSINESS OF EARLY AMERICAN JEWISH MERCHANT MOSES MYERS]

[Norfolk, Va.; Bermuda; and elsewhere, 1820. Nine items. Very good. Early American Jewish merchant Moses Myers (1753-1835) was born in New York City to Dutch merchant Hyam Myers and Rachel Louzada. After serving briefly in the New York Second Battalion during the American Revolution, he went into business with his cousin Samuel Myers. Shortly after marrying Eliza Judah in 1787, he moved to Norfolk, Virginia and established an import/export business there. Myers and his family were the first permanent Jewish- American residents in the Norfolk area, and would compose the regions entire Jewish population for over a decade. His house, constructed in 1795 and occupied by the Myers family until 1935, still stands in downtown Norfolk and is the oldest Jewish home in America operated as a museum. This archive is comprised of the following documents: 1) Two leaves from Moses Myers' letter book, with the texts of three letters, dated Aug. 18 to Sept. 5, 1795, written to James Swan, giving prices of various commodities. 2) Partly-printed bill of lading for a shipment of hemp, tar and turpentine to the French Republic aboard Myers ship named John. Norfolk, March 12, 1796. 3) Autograph letter, being the first leaf only of a letter written to an unnamed Count, relaying news of the declaration of war and on war related arrests in Norfolk, July 29, 1812. 4) Printed broadside, accomplished in manuscript, signed by W. Gerritt, concerning the capture of the Ship Nancy by the Ship of War Goree. Folio. St. George, Bermuda, manuscript additions dated Dec. 16, 1812 (the broadside was probably printed the same year, at St. George). 5) Manuscript true copy of a claim by John Slone on behalf of Moses Myers, concerning the capture of the Ship Nancy in Bermuda. Jan. 21, 1813. 5pp. 6) Partly-printed document signed by British Consul to Virginia Patrick Savage, confirming that Albert Almond is a notary public. Norfolk, Dec. 3, 1816. 7) Autograph letter signed from Moses Myers to his son, Myer Myers, a lengthy letter concerning the recovery of payment for a shipment to Norway and on other business matters. Norfolk, Dec. 10, 1817. 3pp., with integral address leaf. 8) Manuscript balance of account between John Myers and Robert Montgomery & Co., ca. September 1816. 2pp. 9) Inventory of the ship Georgiana. [ca. 1820]. 1p.

Paris, A. Nepveu, 1820. 8vo (19.3 x 12.0 cm). xxviii, 302 pp., one hand-coloured folded frontispiece, one engraved folded table, five hand-coloured folded plates. Contemporary full tree calf. Spine rich gilt including empire vignettes and a red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges speckled.= Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812) was a Dutch surgeon, scholar, merchant and ambassador. During a long career in East Asia, Titsingh was a senior official of the Dutch East India Company. Between 1779 and 1784 he was head of a factory in Deshima, then the only ?eye? between Japan and the rest of the world. 18th and early 19th century Japan was much of a mystery to foreigners. This work unveils some its secrets. However, it does not only deal with the Japanese and their customs, but also reports on the geology of the country and in particular on the active volcanos. Two of the large, hand-coloured folded plates depict eruptions; of the Asama-Yama, and of a volcano in the Simahara district. The first of these plates, as well as a view of the island of Deshima with the Dutch factory were used again in Titsingh's "Byzonderheden over Japan", volume II (1825), see Landwehr. This edition is the first one published. The French sinologist Jean Pierre Abel Rémusat (1788-1832) edited the work after Titsingh's death in Paris. An English translation was published in 1822 and formed the basis of a translation (back?) into Dutch. Boards slightly rubbed, caption of one plate shaved with some small loss of text. Inner front hinge reinforced, otherwise a fine copy of this very rare work. Brunet V, 28316; Landwehr 456 (not this work, but "Byzonderheden over Japan", see above).

        Card game. [France, c. 1820/30].

1820. Complete set of 32 erotic engraved translucent cards, 80 x 52 mm. Stored loosely in contemp. cardboard slipcase. This complete set of 32 cards is an erotic variant of the famous "Cartes royales" by Armand Houbigant. The original was published in 1818 with a royal privilege (cf. Schreiber, French, 31, and Hoffmann 35 with plate 52a). It marks the beginning of the costume playing card; Chatto (Facts and Speculations on the origin and history of playing cards, London 1848, p. 257) praises the illustrations as "the best of the costume cards that I have seen". They were considered very rare as early as the mid-19th century. The erotic cards (revealing a hidden image when held up to the light) created after this pattern are simplified reproduced engravings, but of extreme rarity in this form. This unique variant is especially noteworthy for stating the names of the persons depicted: kings Charlemagne, Louis the Saint (!), Francis I and Henry IV, queens Hildegarde, Blanche de Castille, Marguerite de Valois and Jeanne d' Albret; the Jacks are illustrated by important military commanders. No matching set is known. - Quite clean; slipcase rather strongly scratched and scuffed.

Album with 51 topographical watercolours, depicting views from the Mühl dictrict in Upper Austria, from Styria and Lower Austria. Austria, c. 1820.

1820. Oblong 4to (200 x 255 mm). 51 watercolors in ink and opaque white (measurements c. 130 x 180-160 x 215 mm), mounted in inked border. Contemp. calf with ornamental cover borders and spine fillets. Charming Biedermeier watercolor album. Apart from the numerous castles and ruins, the album also contains views of several mills, churches and landscapes in Upper and Lower Austria as well as Styria. The watercolors on bluish, yellowish and white drawing paper are tipped in within grey ink frames; two are signed with the name "Constantine". Below the frame, the watercolors have been captioned by the painter (some in French); the plates have been numbered in the top right corner by a different hand (1-53; numbers 23 and 24, which did not contain views but depicted the artist's private quarters, have been removed). 4-line calligraphic French motto on front endpaper; folded manuscript double leaf on front pastedown, containing a table of contents (by the same hand as the numbering). The series' focus is on the Mühl district in Upper Austria (37 watercolors), of which 17 show Schwertberg castle and environs, the nearby ruin of Windegg castle, and the neighboring mills. Further views show Klamm, Weinberg, Brandegg, and Ruttenstein castle. The principal Styrian views include Münichshofen castle near Weiz, the ruin of Sturmberg castle, and Herberstein. Among the seven plates from Lower Austria, those of Klamm near Schottwien, Pitten, Gutenstein, Merkenstein, and Brühl deserve special mention. - The delicate watercolors, almost all enlivened by figures an animals, and apparently executed by a talented amateur, captivate the viewer through their atmosphere: frequent sunsets alternate with scenes drenched in the warm light of the late afternoon; in other views, the almost unmodified bluish grey color of the drawing paper seems to hint at an approaching storm. - Detailed listing available upon request.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Nicolovius"). Berlin, 10. X. 1820.

1820. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). Lisena, in Stanzen u. The Battle At Bunkers Hill Near Boston, June 17th 1775.; Die Schlacht Von Bunkers Hill Bey Boston, Am 17 Juny 1775.

1820 - [London] , c.1820, 320 x 410mm. A view of one of the most famous battles of the American War of Independence which resulted in a Pyrrhic victory for the English. engraved by A. Kessler after the famous painting 'The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill' by J. Trumbull . As a soldier in the American Revolutionary War, Trumbull rendered a particular service at Boston by sketching plans of the British works, and witnessed the famous Battle of Bunkers Hill. He was appointed second personal aide to General George Washington, and in June 1776 deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates, but resigned from the army in 1777. In 1780 he traveled to London where he studied under Benjamin West, who suggested to him that he paint small pictures of the War of Independence and miniature portraits, of which he produced about 250 in his lifetime. In 1784 he was again in London working under West, in whose studio he painted his Battle of Bunker Hill and Death of Montgomery.

New York: T. and J. Swords, 1820. Full Leather. Very Good binding. First published in by the SPCK in 1814 in three volumes, this edition -- the First American Edition -- combined them into two. The work of the two Anglican worthies was augmented in this American edition by John Henry Hobart, the Bishop of New York, sometime rector of Trinity Church in New York City and the founder of the General Theological Seminary. It is said of Bishop Hobart's additions: "He has greatly enhanced the value of this work by numerous additional notes, selected from the writings of the most eminent divines (not noticed by Drs. Mant and D'Oyly)" [cf. Allibone. A Critical Dictionary of English Literature, and British and American Authors, Vol. I; p. 518]. Two quite chunky quarto volumes in diced calf with titling in gold to the spines and all edges marbled. A previous owner gift inscription penned on the verso of the front endpaper of Volume I.         [Hamse-i Sani-zade]. Kostantiniye (Istanbul), Tabhane-yi Sahane / Dar üt-Tibaat ül-Amire (Imperial School of Medicine), 1235 AH [= 1820 AD].

1820. Folio (208 x 289 mm). 3 parts in 1 volume: 4 pp. of prelims (blank, alif, ba, gim); 131, (1 blank) pp. and 35, (1 blank) pp. (bound alternately), with 56 etched plates; 39, (1 blank) pp.; 283, (1 blank) pp. Contemp. half calf with gilstamped spine and marbled covers. First edition of the pioneering Ottoman physician Sanizade's (1771-1826) medical compendium: the first three books (on anatomy, physiology, and internal medicine) of what would later be known as "Sani-zade's Canon of Five", "Kitâb ül-evvel fi t-tesrihât" ("Mir'âtül-ebdân fî tesrih-i a'zâil-insân"), "Kitab üs-sânî fi 't-tabîyat", and "Kitâb üs-sâlis Miyâr ül-etibbâ". This was one of the earliest Turkish medical works to draw thoroughly on western, Paracelsian science: indeed, it is modelled on and partly translated from Italian and German sources, such as Anton Störck, Bartolomeo Eustachi, Gabriele Fallopio, and Costanzo Varolio, reproducing anatomical illustrations from a variety of sources including Vesalius. - "[B]y and large Ottoman medicine remained [...] attached to its Galenic roots. [...] Real paradigmatic change began to appear only with the upheavals of 19th-century reforms, when translations and adaptations of new European knowledge made their way to the core of the medical profession. One of the first books to spark this revolution was Ataullah Sanizade's compendium 'Hamse-i sanizade', a series of five books published in Ottoman Turkish from 1820 onward, incorporating new medical knowledge from Europe. Sanizade was a brilliant and innovative physician and theorist (as well as musician, astronomer, and historian) who did much to integrate new medical knowledge with the old. His views on medicine encountered much opposition, mainly because of his support for surgery-based study of anatomy. As a result his request to dedicate his chef d'oeuvre to Sultan Mahmud II was denied. In time, however, the compendium came to replace the earlier canonic texts, and was fondly named 'kanun-i sanizade' (Sanizade's canon), referring, of course, to the old master's 'Qanun'. Although the compendium formally adhered to the humoral system and other concepts of ancient medicine, it was here that blood circulation was mentioned for the first time as a scientific concept and as part of a different medical theory. Some of the terminology included in this book formed the basis for a new medical profession that was beginning to take shape" (D. Ze'evi, Producing Desire [2006], p. 20f.). A five-volume Arabic edition appeared at Bulaq in 1828 by direct order of Mehmet Ali. - Part 1 bound as follows (agreeing with the copy in the BSB Munich): 4 pp. of prelims (blank, alif, ba, gim); 3, (1) pp., (2 plates), 2 pp. [index], 5-34 pp., (17 plates), 3-22 pp. [index], 35-68 pp., (9 plates), 23-35 pp. [index; pp. 25-28 numbered 3-6 in error], 1 bl. p., 69-94 pp., (12 plates), 37-48 pp. [index], 95-100 pp., (6 plates), 49-55 pp. [index], 1 bl. p., 101-106 pp., (3 plates), 57-60 pp. [index], 107-120 pp., (5 plates), 61-70 pp. [index], 121-128 pp., (2 plates), 71-80 pp. [index], 129-131 pp., 1 bl. p. Some dampstaining throughout, more prominently so in several plates. In all, a good copy of this rare work, the only edition published during the author's lifetime. OCLC 608102180.

Three-quarter length portrait of a seated John Clare, facing left.

Image 19 x 16.5cm; the background varnished, with sl. crazing in places. In a handsome contemporary gilt frame, glazed, approx. 31.5 x 28cm, 4.5cm deep. The frame is a little rubbed, with chipping & repair to small section of ornamentation, upper left corner.Commissioned by Clare's publisher John Taylor in 1820, the original oil painting prompted a contemporary art critic to exclaim "What life in the eyes! What ardent thirst for excellence, and what susceptibility to the outward expression in the quivering lips". This smaller version shows a more romanticised version of the poet than is depicted in the original, having a gentler, slimmer, and less ruddy face. The portrait in oils was engraved by Edward Scriven as the frontispiece to The Village Minstrel. A pencil sketch and an 1860s photograph, together with a number of sketches in the Northampton Museum, record Clare after 1840, but the Hilton portrait is the only image of him as a young man. According to Professor Jonathan Bate, the biographer of Clare, this watercolour is one of three executed by Hilton at about the same time as the original oil - one for Clare's patron Lord Radstock, one for his friend Mrs Emmerson and one for his father, Parker Clare. If it was owned by the last, the portrait hung in Clare's cottage for many years. Whether the other two watercolours survived is unknown. The picture clearly became 'lost' at some point in the nineteenth century: a printed label on the back of the frame states: 'A Gentleman (James West?), three-quarter length portrait ...'. William Hilton, R.A. (1786-1839) was, like Haydon, a 'history painter' on the grand scale as well as a portraitist (following his father, William Hilton, the Elder). His acquaintances included Keats (his portrait of the poet after Severn hangs in Keats' House), Lamb and Clare.

XXXIV, (2), 380, (6) pp. XVIII, 345, (1) pp. With 19 engr. plates. Contemp. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to attractively gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Interesting letter (in German) to an unidentified professor, accompanying the first edition of his work on Brazil. Very likely to his former academic teacher in Göttingen, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), under whom the author had read natural history in 1811-12: "Dearest professor, please accept this small token of my deep gratitude and veneration, and exercise forbearance when looking upon this product borne forth not by a scholar, but by a mere dilettante of descriptive zoology [...] The printer has retained a large number of obvious errors which unfortunately were in the manuscript, by fault of the copyist [...]". - Following the example set by the Humboldts, the Rhenish Prince Max zu Wied made significant contributions to botany, zoology, and ethnology through two long and well-documented expeditions, lasting several years. He led an expedition to Brazil in 1815-17, studying flora, fauna, and the native population. The prince was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Jena in 1858. - Letter shows slight edge damage to centerfold (no loss to text); some browning and traces of original folds. Book variously browned due to paper; the beautiful binding is very well preserved. Without the separately published plate volume. Sabin 47018. Borba de Moraes II, 43. Bosch I, 321. Baldus 1762. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1820-1829.

1820. A total of 36 vols.: 26 text vols. (4to) and 10 atlas vols. (elephant folio). With coloured frontispiece and 899 engraved plates and maps, many double-page-sized and folded. Slightly later English half calf, professionally repaired in places. Second edition of this monumental work (the first was published from 1809 onwards), the first comprehensive description of ancient and modern Egypt. Commissioned by Napoleon during his Egyptian campaign between 1798 and 1801, this encompassing historical, archaeological, art-historical, and natural-historical account of the country was realised through the efforts of the Institut d'Egypte in Cairo. Its influence was enormous, establishing Egyptology as an intellectual discipline and nurturing a passion for Egyptian art throughout the Western World. Edited by some of the leading intellectual figures in France, the Description also includes contributions from celebrated artists such as Jacques Barraband, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, Jules-César Savigny and others. More than 150 scholars and scientists and some 2000 artists, designers and engravers were involved in its preparation. The success of the publication was such that work on the second edition (known as the "Pancoucke edition") began before the first was completed. The text was expanded into a greater number of volumes, now printed in a smaller format; new pulls were taken from the plates, and these were bound with many of the large-format plates folded into the new, reduced dimensions. - A splendid, clean copy, complete with all the plates. An incomplete copy of the second edition of the Description de l'Egypte sold at Sotheby's for £68,750 in 2016. Blackmer 526. Gay 1999. Brunet II, 617. Graesse II, 366. Cf.

1820. 8vo. 19, (1), 22, (2) pp. Contemp. grey wrappers. First Arabic edition. "Silvestre de Sacy translated the Last Will and Testament of Louis XVI into Arabic and had the translation printed together with the French original in 1820, in hopes that it might prove a comfort and encouragement to the Christians of the Orient, while giving Muslim readers a demonstration of Christian submission and evangelical meekness" (cf. Fück). Three years previously, de Sacy had published the late King's Testament (together with the last letter of Marie Antoinette) in a luxurious folio edition. "Sacy never let his Christian convictions hamper his work as a scholar, for he saw religion as a personal matter. Although he revealed his faith at times, it was never to pose it as the strongest model against which to judge other religions. He was nevertheless very pious. There is no other way to explain his translation of the guillotined king, Louis XVI, into Arabic [...]. He apparently wished to show how devout, simple and charitable his beloved monarch had been" (Kamal as-Salibi, The Druze [London 2005], p. 20). - The orientalist de Sacy, a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France, began his career as professor of Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes in 1796. In 1806 he was offered the chair of Persian at the College of France and in 1824 was appointed director of the school of oriental languages. He also acted as advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translating political propaganda into Arabic, including the "Bulletins of the Grande Armée" (cf. Atabey 1134). - Occasional slight duststaining near margins, but a good, untrimmed and wide-margined copy, the central bifolium remaining uncut.

1820. Large 4to (222 x 253 mm.). 2 parts in one volume. XII, 194, (2) pp. (4), 147, (3) pp., all lithographed save for 1 page. With 6 lithographed plates (4 folding). Original temporary grey boards as issued. Rare; one of the first Sanskrit works published in Germany. Lithographed throughout (with the exception of a single letterpress page at the beginning of part 2) and published at the author's expense: "Alles über Umdruck lithographisch gedruckt" (Winkler). Contains the earliest (partial) edition of the Bhagavadgita (in part 2), pre-dating August Wilhelm Schlegel's edition - admittedly better printed - by several years. The former Benedictine monk Frank (1770-1840), an admirer of Persian philosophy, studied oriental languages in Paris and London. In 1821 he took the chair of Indian and Persian at Würzburg University and went to Munich in 1826 as Professor of Sanskrit. In spite of his pioneering work, he exerted little influence on the development of linguistics and Sanskrit studies, probably due to his penchant for mysticism and his laboured, nebulous prose (cf. ADB). - Boards worn; some browning and staining as common. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Graesse II, 629. Winkler 224. ADB VII, 260.
