Proposal to Murder the Queen! Englishmen! London, 1820

1820. London, 1820. 22-1/2" x 17-1/2" broadside. London, 1820. 22-1/2" x 17-1/2" broadside. A Fervent Broadside Defending the Spurned Queen of King George IV [Broadside]. [Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821)]. [Pains and Penalties Bill]. Proposal to Murder the Queen! London: Printed by W. Benbow, [1820]. 22-1/2" x 17-1/2" broadside. Text in single column below headline, item mounted to archival paper. Light toning, some edgewear with a few small chips, one vertical and one horizontal fold line, some loss to legibility of about five words along horizontal fold. $1,500. * The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational events in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage, Caroline was eventually banished after the birth of their daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1814 Caroline moved to Europe. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer, the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of the title of Queen Consort and dissolve her marriage. (The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Bergami, while in Italy.) The bill was approved by the House of Lords, but it was not submitted to the House of Commons, where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts, Caroline remained a popular favorite. Indeed, her popularity increased during the trial. Although she prevailed, she fell ill and died shortly after the coronation of George IV. She was certain that she was poisoned by one of the King's agents. The trial inspired numerous books, pamphlets and ephemera, such as this anonymous broadside. One of many publications that supported Caroline's cause, it takes issue with a statement against Caroline that appeared in a newspaper on June 26, 1820. Its author said she was an "alien and unworthy object" who needs to be dismissed, either as a "martyr or a criminal." The broadside claims this statement is essentially a call to have her executed, since that is the common fate of martyrs and often the fate of deposed royalty.

A View of Dawes Battery at the Entrance of Sydney Cove

Rudolph Ackermann, dated September 1, London 1820 - Engraved view measuring 230 x 335mm. (plate size), early handcolouring. An early engraved view of Sydney Cove, itself the extraordinary outcome of the fruitful relationship between two convict engravers, Walter Preston and Joseph Lycett, and the artistically talented army officer Major James Wallis. This plate forms the frontispiece of Wallis' fine album of Australian views titled An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales published by Ackermann in London in 1821. The plate was engraved by the convict artist Walter Preston whose considerable talents came to the attention of Major Wallis, then commander of the convict settlement at Newcastle. At the time, Newcastle enjoyed a fearsome reputation for as a place for secondary punishment and was described by a contemporary officer as 'the Hell of New South Wales'.For many years the attribution of Wallis as the artist of the views in An Historical Account of the Colony of New South Wales was a matter of historical conjecture (the implication being that he had appropriated the work of Preston and Lycett). However, the recent revelation of original watercolour material by Wallis establishes him as the artist. Not that this fact diminishes the achievement of the convict engravers: Preston was tasked with working upon the only copper sheets available, manufactured for sheathing the hulls of ships, a difficult material softer than standard engraving copper.Ultimately, both Preston and Lycett were pardoned by Macquarie on Wallis' recommendation, in no small part because of their work on this book. When Wallis departed Australia in 1819 he took the plates with him to London where this book was published by Ackermann, complete with an introductory history of the colony and a map of Port Macquarie by the surveyor John Oxley. Small closed tear affects upper blank margin (image entirely unaffected, now expertly repaired); very good.

Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and other poems.

London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey, 1820 - Duodecimo (177 x 104 mm). Bound by Bedford in 19th-century green morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, boards triple-ruled in gilt, elaborate gilt dentelles, vellum doublures and endpapers, top edge gilt. Light wear to spine ends and joints, some minor scuffing to front board, overall an excellent copy with bright, fresh contents. With the half-title and publisher's advertisement leaf, and the 6-page publisher's catalogue to the rear, the latest date being June 1820. First edition of keats's third and final book, a superb copy with the half-title, advertisements, and untrimmed in a fine Bedford binding. This was the last book published in Keats's lifetime, about which he had "low hopes, though not spirits. this shall be my last trial; not succeeding, I shall try what I can do in the apothecary line". Though Keats did not live to see his fame confirmed, this last collection is his greatest single volume, containing the magnificent series of odes on which his reputation now rests, as well as his longer narrative poems – two medieval romances: the chilling "Isabella or the Pot of Basil" and the gothic romance "The Eve of St Agnes"; and two mythological fantasies: the weird "Lamia" and the ambitious, Miltonic fragment "Hyperion".         The Miscellaneous Poems. In Four Volumes; [Together with] Yarrow Revisited, and Other Poems.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown; and Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longman, and Edward Moxon,, 1820 & 1835. Together, 2 works in 5 volumes, duodecimo (165 x 98 mm). Contemporary green morocco, titles gilt to spines, spines and sides panelled in gilt and blind, board edges and turn-ins gilt-rolled, red coated endpapers, brown silk bookmarkers, gilt edges. Front blank, rear blank, and errata leaf in vol. I, engraved frontispiece to vols. I–IV (folding in vol. III), half-title to vols. II, III, and V. Spines evenly tanned, some minor nicks to ends and corners and a few minor marks and scratches but on the whole a beautiful set, internally sound and fresh but for very minor spotting or offsetting from the frontispiece plates, excellent condition. An extraordinary and rare presentation set of Wordsworth's Miscellaneous Poems (his first collected edition), inscribed by the author in each volume to his friend the poet and literary patron John Kenyon (1784–1856), together with a presentation copy to Kenyon of the later collection Yarrow Revisited bound to match at the time of presentation. All four volumes of the Miscellaneous Poems are inscribed on the title page verso in Wordsworth's hand, "To John Kenyon from his sincere friend William Wordsworth". All five volumes are inscribed by Kenyon, either on the half-title or title page, in the first four volumes "from the author to J. Kenyon", and in the fifth "From the Author. John Kenyon. London. 1835". The first volume of Miscellaneous Poems, and the Yarrow Revisited, are both additionally inscribed "from the author" in a different hand, either that of the publisher or his clerk. The splendid bindings are contemporary and appear (from the very slight cropping of his ownership inscriptions) to have been bound for Kenyon shortly after receipt. John Kenyon was himself a poet, and published three collections, but is best remembered as a patron of poets. He first became acquainted with Wordsworth in 1819. Wordsworth wrote many fulsome and friendly letters to Kenyon, and they hosted one another reciprocally in London and the Lakes. From their letters it appears that Kenyon sent frequent gifts to the Wordsworths, and they, for their part, used their connections to get Kenyon admitted to the Athenaeum Club. Kenyon was also friends with other Romantics such as Coleridge (to whom he provided much financial support), Southey (with whom Kenyon toured France in 1838) and Charles Lamb, as well as later poets such as Walter Savage Landor (who stayed with Kenyon when in England and wrote part of Orestes at Delpho under his roof), and perhaps most notably Robert Browning, who was his lifelong friend and who received the princely sum of £10,000 in Kenyon's will. It was Kenyon who first introduced Browning to Elizabeth Barrett, who was Kenyon's cousin. Kenyon was also responsible for introducing EBB to Wordsworth in 1836, which was the spur of much mutual literary admiration. This set was later in the library of Irish judge and collector William O'Brien (1832-99), which was endowed on his death to the Milltown Park Jesuit Library, Dublin. Each volume bears his post-mortem bookplate and the Milltown Park library ticket to front pastedown, and the library ink stamp to title or half-title page. Wordsworth's Miscellaneous Poems was the first edition to collect his published works (with the exception of the Excursion), drawing from Evening Walk, Descriptive Sketches (1793), Lyrical Ballads (1789 and 1790), Poems, in two Volumes (1807), Additional Pieces, and the White Doe of Rylstone (1815), Thanksgiving Ode (1816), The Tale of Peter Bell, and the Waggoner (1819), and River Duddon (1820). Naturally, the vast majority of Wordsworth's most significant and best loved poems are contained herein. It also entailed the first publication of a number of sonnets. It prints the Preface of 1815 and also reprints at the rear of volume IV the Preface to the Lyrical Ballads of 1800, dubbed the "manifesto" of the Romantic movement, with its famous definition of poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings … emotion recollected in tranquillity". Complete sets of the Miscellaneous Poems are scarce enough, but to have a fully inscribed presentation set is a great rarity. The last authorially inscribed copy we can trace at auction was inscribed in only one volume, and appeared at Anderson Galleries in 1932. The only other copy we can trace thus inscribed by Wordsworth in each volume was to his daughter Dora, and appeared at Anderson Galleries in 1909. That the only other copy we can find thus inscribed was to his daughter shows something of the close friendship shared by Wordsworth and Kenyon.

ROBINSONADE: BEGEBENHEITEN EINES FRANZO?SISCHEN SCHIFFSJUNGEN AUF EINER UNBEWOHNTEN INSEL, ODER, DER ZWO?LFJA?HRIGE ROBINSON.

Zürich & Leipzig: Trachsler []. 1820 - Small 8°, [2] frontispiece and title page with originally coloured etchings and aquatints, 324 pp. with interleaved 4 originally coloured etchings and aquatints, modern tan paper binding with old title pasted on the spine (Very Good, slightly stained and water stained, professionally restored, two old owner's hand written remarks on endpaper verso and frontispiece verso). A rare Robinsonade with originally coloured plates was publshed in Zürich and Leipzig in 1820. - This is a rare Robinsonade in German language about a twelve year old French Sailor Robinson Crusoe, stranded on a lonely island. Robinsonade - The story of Robinson Crusoe was based on a real life experience by a sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on Juan Fernández Island (today Robinson Crusoe Island ) for over four years, between 1704-1709. Upon his return a book based on his life was published with a title Fame of having lived four Years and four Months alone on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which inspired Daniel Defoe (circa 1660-1731) to write The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. This first edition of Robinson Crusoe was supposed to be only an unimportant entertaining book. It was Defoe’s 412th publication and he wrote it, because he needed money for his daughter’s wedding. It was published anonymously on April 25, 1719, and war republished in on May 9, June 4, August 7 etc without definitive manuscript. The book was a major success and soon many different variations of text with various names and stories appeared in different languages. The stories varied from entertaining and educational to moralising. The word Robinsonade was first invented by German writer Johann Gottfried Schnabel in the Preface of his 1731 work Die Insel Felsenburg (The Island Stronghold). We could find five examples of the book in libraries worldwide. We would not trace any other examples in the auction records for the past two generations. The book is also not mentioned in the bibliography on the Robisonades by Ullrich in 1898. References: OCLC: 797502439; Diana Souhami, Selkirk's Island, 2002.         Bjowulfs Drape

Copenhagen: A. Seidelin, 1820. First Edition. full calf. Near fine. 1st edition in Danish of Beowulf, the 1st printing in any modern language, translated using (and only preceded by) Thorkelin's 1815 Latin edition, but our edition eclipses the Latin, adding 45 pages (!) of corrections to Thorkelin's errors of transcription and translation, and it can rationally be praised as the 1st dependable Beowulf of all. Contemporary full calf, light rubs, else fine (gorgeous), and complete with all notes and vocabulary, scarce anyway, and rare in such atypically sublime condition, a book preserved for 196 years with all the care one exercises when brushing a fly off a sleeping leopard. Beowulf is the monumental, 1,000 year old, anonymous, Anglo-Saxon epic, written in old English. The sole extant manuscript is in the British Library (BL Cotton Vitellius A. XV, the numbering from Robert Cotton's system, "Vitellius" being the particular Roman emperor's bust in that section of his library, "A" being the first shelf, and "XV" marking the 15th manuscript on that shelf). Cotton's grandson gave it to the Library in 1700, but neither gifter nor giftee had a clue what it was. So there it lay, invisible and dormant, its gist unknown, until Thorkelin's curiosity led to its discovery in 1786. It's the earliest surviving long poem in old English, a gloriously written, dark age, pagan horror set in 600 A. D. and a classic of surprising arete, and incalculable literary impact. OCLC found 3 dozen in libraries world wide, but most were parked there long ago, so it isn't that ordinary. Conversely, ABPC lists no sales at auction in 40 years, but it isn't that scarce. Past those generalities to what's more specific, here's something immediate. The imaginary copy you've been waiting for, in condition like this one, is being held for you at the make-a-wish foundation.

Mason, who was born at Powerscourt, 1778-1858, was an author, poet and librarian of the King's Inns. He became, through his concern with Protestant evangelization, interested in the Irish language and was instrumental in founding the first chair of Irish at T.C.D., and in 1830 he published an Irish Grammar. In his life time he formed a great collection of rare books and manuscripts. Published at his own expensive, this is a great history and a fine work but it received little support. His plans for a companion work on Christ Church and History of Dublin, did not materialize. .

        Of Population.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown,, 1820. An Enquiry concerning the Power of Increase in the Numbers of Mankind, being an answer to Mr. Malthus's essay on that subject. Octavo. Original cloth backed boards, printed paper spine label, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. Complete with the half-title. Corners somewhat worn, short crack at head of front joint, boards a little marked, spine paper label rubbed; light spotting throughout; a very good copy. First edition, scarce in the original boards. Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population (1798) was originally framed as a corrective to the utopian hopes of both Condorcet and Godwin, but by the time the Essay reached its fifth edition in 1817 Godwin was no longer mentioned and in danger of being forgotten. Godwin's long-meditated answer points to restrictions in the food supply arising from the accumulation of property in the hands of a few. Among other remedies, Godwin proposes to make more land available for cultivation and to improve agricultural methods.

        Russia and Central Asia.

c 1820 - Album (33.3 x 25.7 cm). 38 watercolours, almost all with descriptive manuscript captions in French, protected by tissue guards. Contemporary red morocco backed boards, spine with gilt lettering and tooling in compartments; slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped. Fine collection of thirty eight watercolours showing scenes and costumes from everyday life in the Russian Empire. The artist's attention is here largely drawn to the peoples of Central Asia and the Urals, represented in 25 watercolours. These include depictions of the people of Kazan, Kyrgyzia, Bashkiria, Mongolia and outer China, mostly shown against landscapes typical of their regions. The artist also sketches scenes from the lives of common Russian people, such as the baptism of a child, traditional games on the outskirts of the village, and drinking in a public house. These watercolours were created at a time when interest in Russian culture and lifestyle was growing, especially among Europeans. Many illustrated books on the subject were published during the first two decades of the XIX century, and it is here that the artist is likely to have found inspiration for his drawings.
