Zürich & Leipzig: Trachsler []. 1820 - Small 8°, [2] frontispiece and title page with originally coloured etchings and aquatints, 324 pp. with interleaved 4 originally coloured etchings and aquatints, modern tan paper binding with old title pasted on the spine (Very Good, slightly stained and water stained, professionally restored, two old owner's hand written remarks on endpaper verso and frontispiece verso). A rare Robinsonade with originally coloured plates was publshed in Zürich and Leipzig in 1820. - This is a rare Robinsonade in German language about a twelve year old French Sailor Robinson Crusoe, stranded on a lonely island. Robinsonade - The story of Robinson Crusoe was based on a real life experience by a sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on Juan Fernández Island (today Robinson Crusoe Island ) for over four years, between 1704-1709. Upon his return a book based on his life was published with a title Fame of having lived four Years and four Months alone on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which inspired Daniel Defoe (circa 1660-1731) to write The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. This first edition of Robinson Crusoe was supposed to be only an unimportant entertaining book. It was Defoe’s 412th publication and he wrote it, because he needed money for his daughter’s wedding. It was published anonymously on April 25, 1719, and war republished in on May 9, June 4, August 7 etc without definitive manuscript. The book was a major success and soon many different variations of text with various names and stories appeared in different languages. The stories varied from entertaining and educational to moralising. The word Robinsonade was first invented by German writer Johann Gottfried Schnabel in the Preface of his 1731 work Die Insel Felsenburg (The Island Stronghold). We could find five examples of the book in libraries worldwide. We would not trace any other examples in the auction records for the past two generations. The book is also not mentioned in the bibliography on the Robisonades by Ullrich in 1898. References: OCLC: 797502439; Diana Souhami, Selkirk's Island, 2002. The final plate - engraved after a Chinese painting - depicts a scene wherein a group of men are using monkeys to collect rare tea leaves. Two trade cards for the F.         Bjowulfs Drape

Copenhagen: A. Seidelin, 1820. First Edition. full calf. Near fine. 1st edition in Danish of Beowulf, the 1st printing in any modern language, translated using (and only preceded by) Thorkelin's 1815 Latin edition, but our edition eclipses the Latin, adding 45 pages (!) of corrections to Thorkelin's errors of transcription and translation, and it can rationally be praised as the 1st dependable Beowulf of all. Contemporary full calf, light rubs, else fine (gorgeous), and complete with all notes and vocabulary, scarce anyway, and rare in such atypically sublime condition, a book preserved for 196 years with all the care one exercises when brushing a fly off a sleeping leopard. Beowulf is the monumental, 1,000 year old, anonymous, Anglo-Saxon epic, written in old English. The sole extant manuscript is in the British Library (BL Cotton Vitellius A. XV, the numbering from Robert Cotton's system, "Vitellius" being the particular Roman emperor's bust in that section of his library, "A" being the first shelf, and "XV" marking the 15th manuscript on that shelf). Cotton's grandson gave it to the Library in 1700, but neither gifter nor giftee had a clue what it was. So there it lay, invisible and dormant, its gist unknown, until Thorkelin's curiosity led to its discovery in 1786. It's the earliest surviving long poem in old English, a gloriously written, dark age, pagan horror set in 600 A. D. and a classic of surprising arete, and incalculable literary impact. OCLC found 3 dozen in libraries world wide, but most were parked there long ago, so it isn't that ordinary. Conversely, ABPC lists no sales at auction in 40 years, but it isn't that scarce. Past those generalities to what's more specific, here's something immediate. The imaginary copy you've been waiting for, in condition like this one, is being held for you at the make-a-wish foundation.

Mason, who was born at Powerscourt, 1778-1858, was an author, poet and librarian of the King's Inns. He became, through his concern with Protestant evangelization, interested in the Irish language and was instrumental in founding the first chair of Irish at T.C.D., and in 1830 he published an Irish Grammar. In his life time he formed a great collection of rare books and manuscripts. Published at his own expensive, this is a great history and a fine work but it received little support. His plans for a companion work on Christ Church and History of Dublin, did not materialize. .

        Of Population.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown,, 1820. An Enquiry concerning the Power of Increase in the Numbers of Mankind, being an answer to Mr. Malthus's essay on that subject. Octavo. Original cloth backed boards, printed paper spine label, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. Complete with the half-title. Corners somewhat worn, short crack at head of front joint, boards a little marked, spine paper label rubbed; light spotting throughout; a very good copy. First edition, scarce in the original boards. Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population (1798) was originally framed as a corrective to the utopian hopes of both Condorcet and Godwin, but by the time the Essay reached its fifth edition in 1817 Godwin was no longer mentioned and in danger of being forgotten. Godwin's long-meditated answer points to restrictions in the food supply arising from the accumulation of property in the hands of a few. Among other remedies, Godwin proposes to make more land available for cultivation and to improve agricultural methods.

        Russia and Central Asia.

c 1820 - Album (33.3 x 25.7 cm). 38 watercolours, almost all with descriptive manuscript captions in French, protected by tissue guards. Contemporary red morocco backed boards, spine with gilt lettering and tooling in compartments; slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped. Fine collection of thirty eight watercolours showing scenes and costumes from everyday life in the Russian Empire. The artist's attention is here largely drawn to the peoples of Central Asia and the Urals, represented in 25 watercolours. These include depictions of the people of Kazan, Kyrgyzia, Bashkiria, Mongolia and outer China, mostly shown against landscapes typical of their regions. The artist also sketches scenes from the lives of common Russian people, such as the baptism of a child, traditional games on the outskirts of the village, and drinking in a public house. These watercolours were created at a time when interest in Russian culture and lifestyle was growing, especially among Europeans. Many illustrated books on the subject were published during the first two decades of the XIX century, and it is here that the artist is likely to have found inspiration for his drawings. Cooper October 1st 1820?, Cooper has collected information from a variety of sources to aid his objectives in Egypt. A volume of views illustrative of his journey was privately published in 1824.

Renouard II, 215. Monroe Palau, 59016.Des rousseurs, des cahiers uniformément jaunis.         Beowulfs Drape

Copenhagen: Andreas Seidelin, 1820. First edition. Modern blue half calf, edges sprinkled blue, collating: LXXIV, 325 pp (a few leaves in the preliminaries bound out of order). Light to moderate foxing throughout, at least one page with early marginalia. The highly important first translation into any modern language - and overall the second edition to appear - of the seminal Gothic tale Beowulf. This monumental work appeared merely five years after the first printing of the text (in Latin, 1815) and 13 years before the first English edition of Beowulf. With this edition, Grundtvig founded the study of Beowulf. In the British Library there is a manuscript, its edges scorched and brittle, of Beowulf, one of the very earliest poems in English and England's first great literary masterpiece. It exists only in this one vellum codex and has survived for a thousand years, telling of an even earlier time, when the heroic age still was remembered by a Christian audience. In 1786, an Icelandic scholar, came to the British Museum, looking for documents relating to Denmark, where the first part of Beowulf takes place. He made two complete copies of the manuscript, the first time this had been done, one by a professional copyist and the other, himself, and returned to Copenhagen to study them. But then calamity. Denmark was occupied during the Napoleonic Wars and, in 1807, the English bombarded Copenhagen. The manuscript for an edition of Beowulf, which just had been completed, was destroyed. The two transcripts were saved, and work on them was begun again, and in 1815 the first printed edition of Beowulf appeared, in Latin, printed in Copenhagen. In 1820 the first translation of the seminal poem appeared, that into Danish, translated by the great Danish author Grundtvig, sparking the interest in Beowulf that persists until this day. In 1833, the first English edition of Beowulf appeared.

Views in the South Seas, from drawings by the late James Webber, draftsman on board the Resolution, Captain James Cooke, from the year 1776 to 1780...

London: Boydell, "1808" [but probably 1819-1820]. Folio, title-page and 16 aquatint plates with fine original handcolouring, 15 leaves of descriptive text (one describing two plates); half calf, spine gilt with raised bands; a fine copy. The most beautiful English colour-plate book of the Pacific, the only colour-plate book relating to Cook's voyages and the last of the great Cook publications. The sixteen coloured aquatints, after Webber's drawings, and engraved by the artist himself, form one of the finest visual statements of the South Seas as a romantic Eden.John Webber was the official artist on Cook's third and final voyage. This collection of his magnificent coloured views is certainly the most striking publication resulting from Cook's expeditions. Views in the South Seas evolved over a number of years from the original series of twelve soft-ground etchings produced between 1788 and 1792. The first issue of the final result was produced in 1808, although the majority of copies of the plates bear later watermarks (as here) suggesting that they were printed between 1819 and 1820. Webber was the son of a Swiss sculptor who had emigrated to England and anglicised his name. His appointment as draughtsman to the third voyage gives his christian name as John, as does the memorial tablet at the Church of the Ascension in London, although on the title-page here he is named James. The confusion is probably explained by the fact that the collection of views was published fifteen years after his death.Webber's album has always been a bibliographical curiosity. Despite the date on the title-page, most copies can be shown to have been issued about 1820. Although the plates are all dated 1 April 1809 on their captions, the watermarks are nearly always later, as here. The variety in the watermark dates can be explained by publishing practices of the time: while the text leaves were printed in one run, the more expensive plates would have been progressively printed in batches as required. Boydell may also have had the plates available for sale separately, reprinting them as necessary on current paper stock. The magnificently coloured views include five of Tahiti, two each of Kamchatka and Macao, one of New Zealand, and one of Tonga. The views of vegetation on Cracatoa and Pulo Condore are some of the most beautiful aquatints of tropical foliage ever issued. Provenance: The Midlands Library, with stamp on title-page and another on a preliminary blank leaf. Slight foxing to the title-page; generally in excellent condition.

Paris: Hocquet, 1820. Second edition of this ambitious early publication on ballooning, featuring one of the most fantastical images in the history of aeronautics, an influence on the speculative ballooning fiction of Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne. Belgian physicist Étienne-Gaspard Robert (1763-1837), also known by his stage name Robertson, was both an early proponent of ballooning, serving in the French army as Commandant des Aérostiers, and a popular magician, instrumental in developing phantasmagoria. In 1803, Robert undertook the first aerial flight dedicated to scientific experimentation, though his data on static electricity and magnetism proved questionable. Eighteenth-century cynics had dismissed manned balloon flights as technological stunts with no obvious scientific use, prompting Benjamin Franklin's famous reply: "What's the use of the new-born baby?" In La Minerve, first published in Vienna in 1804, Robert answers that question with a bang. He proposes a massive exploratory airship, lifted by a balloon 150 feet in diameter, hosting a fully staffed scientific observatory which could remain aloft for six months at a time. The sixty men and women on the Minerve's maiden voyage would enjoy an airborne library, chapel, chemistry lab, and more, accessing a series of observation platforms via a system of ladders. The frankly fantastical design of the Minerve - the observatory at the balloon's apex is shaped like a chicken waving a flag -- suggests a plan verging on satire, quite in line with Robert the showman's tendency to exaggerate his ballooning claims. While no airship remotely comparable to the Minerve was ever built, Robertson established a blueprint for speculative fiction writers of the next century. A very good copy, documenting the vivid imagination of an influential early aeronaut, with a spectacular hand-colored engraving of the Minerve. Octavo, nineteenth century three-quarter tan calf over brown cloth boards, raised bands, red morocco spine labels, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Large hand-colored engraved folding frontispiece of the Minerva; three pages (four figures) of woodcuts at rear. Light wear to joints; a few paper repairs to title page; moderate foxing to text; faint tidemark to corners of text block and frontispiece (not affecting image).

Signed watercolour, captioned "Voyage de l'Uranie; Insectes pl. no. 15".

circa 1820. Watercolour on sheet of laid paper, 245 x 195 mm., paper watermarked "Edmeads & Pine 1798"; framed. A sheet of butterfly watercolours by Jacques Arago, depicting specimens from "Ile de France" and "Nouvelle Hollande".Jacques Arago (1790-1855) joined the Freycinet expedition in 1817 and was not only the most accomplished of the artists who made the voyage, but was one of the most intriguing of all the early voyagers. The wonders of the voyage stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he continued writing and drawing increasingly fanciful depictions of the Pacific right up until he lost his sight. He published a well-regarded account of the voyage (published in English in 1823), and wrote any number of different versions over the ensuing decades. The sheet is prepared in the usual way by Arago, including the simple line border and the reference to what seems to be a plate number in the top margin. A plate depicting butterflies was included in the official "Zoologie" section of the official account of the Freycinet voyage, but none of the insects on the present sheet is included on that plate. In fact, many of Arago's watercolours of this genre, despite seeming to refer directly to a published plate, have no corresponding printed version - it would seem that the numbering system is uniquely Arago's own. Certainly the naturalists Quoy and Gaimard dwelt on the beauty and variety of the insects they gathered on the voyage (Zoologie, II, pp. 542-3).Although the drawing figures specimens collected on the Uranie voyage, and is captioned "Voyage de l'Uranie; Insectes pl. no. 15", it was not in fact published in the voyage account, giving the watercolour added significance.
