Carlile, Richard, contributor, editor, publisher
1819. London: T. Davison [I; Jane Carlile, II and III; M. A. Carlile, IV; R. Carlile, V-XIV], September 3, 1819-December 29, 1826. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4". 14 volumes, all published, and 13 additional pamphlets bound in at the end of volumes I and IV, one printed by W. T. Sherwin and the rest by Carlile. Frontispiece portrait of Carlile in volume XIII. Contemporary (probably original) marbled boards, calf back and corners, red leather labels (one detached and laid into volume). Rear hinge of volume IV broken, calf and marbled paper lifting on volume XIV, wear at edges. Some small flaws in textblock with loss of letters (but no loss of sense). The set is in good condition, especially when considering that some of the text survived seizure by the government (1822) and two fires (1824). LACKING volume I, number 1 (suppressed Peterloo Massacre number, Carlile himself had trouble finding copies of it); volume V, number 13 (the second edition of volume IV, number 13, is mistakenly bound in, photocopy of missing text supplied); a portion of volume X, number 8 (another binding error, photocopy of missing text supplied). Highlights include articles and letters by Francis Place and the first appearance of "What is love?," later published separately as "Every Woman's Book," an important early instruction manual on contraception; apparently unpublished material by Elihu Palmer; and lectures and discourses by John "Walking" Stewart. An excellent overview of radical thought in early 19th century Britain. This copy comes with a complete, and lengthy, list of contents, and an index of contributors. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Famiglie Celebri Italiane covers 150 families and runs to a total of 184 Dispensas which appeared from 1819 to 1883. Only the most notable of noble houses in Italy, those who were especially "famous", or distinguished in some way, were worthy of Litta's notice. His legacy is a fascinating insight into the military, political and ecclesiastical dynasties of Italy. At the time of Litta's death in 1852, only 113 Dispensa had been published. Luigi Passerini Orsini de 'Rilli, Federico Odorici and Federico Stefani collaborated to complete the series, with contributions by Francesco di Mauro of Polvica and Costantino Coda (although errors, such as the reversal of colours in coats of arms, occasionally occurred). In 1862, the rights and documents were transferred to Luciano Basadonna, who republished the whole work. Each genealogy (Tavola) is printed on double-leaf letterpress plates, versos blank (unless otherwise stated). Tavola I in each genealogy has a coloured coat of arms in the upper right hand corner. The genealogies are inset with brief biographies of the most prominent characters of each of the family. Other items of interest, such as famous portraits (some with tissue guards) and drawings of coins or medals are included. Some Dispensas include maps of territory owned or governed by the families; there are also drawings of castles and other buildings, such as family monuments and tombs, many of which had already been destroyed at the time of publication; thus, these documents are also an important art historical record. Ross, John, K.S. Captain Royal Navy
A lovely, collectable condition copy of this elusive first edition. All plates and fold out charts and maps present. Errata slip present. Some quite stunning fold out colour illustrations which must have been hand coloured. There is a little browning/foxing to some of the plates and pages but really this is not at all severe. There is evidence of a name inscription which has been erased from the front end paper, causing the marbling to be rubbed off in that small area. The front board is present but detached and the head of the spine has been pulled away resulting in loss. The book would benefit from restoration work/rebinding. The boards appear to be the original marbled with quarter leather spine and corner tips. The spine title block is missing but the titles are still evident underneath where this would have been.

A relatively early edition of this popular work, which was first published in 1816 and offered detailed information for those considering a move to Ohio. As Kilbourn wrote in the Preface, the state was "rapidly rising into importance," and people from the East were eager to hear the facts "respecting its extent, soil, climate, navigableness of its rivers, the relative fertility, population, healthiness, and advantages and disadvantages of different districts and sections of the country." 1819. WorldCat (1 copy); Jordan 3482 (1 copy); Quérard 9, p. 5 (apparently unseen and misdated 1819); not in Jahns. First edition, in the very rare 1818 issue, of a Saint Petersburg fortification manual first issued in 1811, including the atlas volume of 20 engraved plates, which is rare in all issues and editions. The main series of plates shows large fortification plans and sections, including many details. The last 3 plates show 80 small figures. Most of the plates are double-page (half sheet), but 7 are larger folding plates. The author remains mysterious. The title-page calls him "Mr. Sea, élève du corps du génie de l'empire Français", but the dedication is signed "Henry Comte de Falkland". The avant-propos notes that the book presents the methods of Alexandre Magnus d'Obenheim (1753-ca. 1835/40), professor of fortification at Metz and formerly Lieutenant-Colonel in the French military engineering service. It gives a very detailed view of the methods that would have been familiar to both the French and the Russians during Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812.Apparently lacking plate 3 in the main series, but otherwise in very good condition. The bindings are slightly worn in general, with a large abrasion to the marbled paper on the lower outer part of both boards of the atlas volume, but they are otherwise good. A rare Saint Petersburg fortification manual, well and extensively illustrated, of special interest in relation to Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia. [Attributes: First Edition]

Various.
1819 - 1833. Collection of 53 manuscript letters detailing the construction of the Byers Green Branch Line in County Durham, including copies of petitions dating from 1819 and 1825 and the Engineer's Report of 1819. Of these 28 are addressed to Robert Surtees, while most of the others are addressed to Dear Sir without a given name and, given the consistent content, Robert Surtees appears to have been the recipient. Also with 4 related contemporary newspaper clippings. Various sizes, from 12mo to foolscap (the majority standard octavo) and various lengths (the majority 1 or 2 pp.). Various hands, all legible. The Byers Green Branch of the Clarence Railway Co. was proposed to best develop a reliable means of connecting the South West Durham Coalfield with the River Tees. Two letters in this collection (6th March 1829 and 13th June 1830) are from Christopher Tennant of the Clarence Railway Company, a Stockton resident Tennant paid for the expenses of George Leather in 1819 to survey a canal to compete with the Rivers Tyne and Wear making the Tees a major exporter of coal; plans were later adapted to promote a railway instead of the canal and the Clarence Railway Company was the result. Robert Surtees opposed the construction of the branch railway as it affected part of his estate at Mainsforth; in common with Lord Londonderry and the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company. Each were active in attempting to obstruct and prevent its construction and the letters here are concerned with their concerted campaign. There had been antagonism between the Stockton and Darlington Railwa … [Click Below for Full Description]
