Il poema, al tempo l'opera più diffusa e fortunata del letterato inglese, consiste di 4 epistole dirette a Henri St. John, Lord Bolingbroke, esaltanti l'umiltà e la rassegnazione, la dignità e la naturale bontà dell'uomo, nonché il bene universale sfuggente alla debole percezione umana, in un'abile versificazione delle idee deiste allora correnti e abbracciate dallo stesso Bolingbroke. Malgrando l'innegabilità del male, è il bene a dominare l'universo, nella ottimistica visione di Pope. Michele Leoni (Borgo San Donnino, attuale Fidenza, 1776-Parma, 1858) fu anche traduttore del "Paradise Lost" di Milton e di varie opere di Byron, ma il suo nome ha rilievo nelle nostre lettere per essere egli stato il primo a rendere Shakespeare in lingua italiana. Collaboratore del "Giornale Enciclopedico" di Firenze e dell'"Antologia" Vieusseux, amico di Ugo Foscolo, Segretario dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Parma, fu studioso di notevole apertura nei confronti delle letterature europee contro qualsiasi ripiegamento provinciale.
