PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION WILTSHIRE]
Salisbury: printed by Messrs. Brodie and Dowding on the canal 1819 - 4to., ix + (1) + 141 + (1)pp., inner margin of title stained from adhesive tape (now removed), contemporary half russia, neatly rebacked with the original gilt backstrip retained. Apart from the noted fault, an excellent, crisp, copy. First edition. The July/August 1819 Wiltshire by-election followed the resignation through ill health (and a cheque for £20,000 from Astley) of Paul Methuen M.P. After a 15-day contest, in which the lead fluctuated, Benett narrowly defeated Astley, however, winning what he termed 'a struggle against the combined influence of peers, and other powerful families of the county'. Butt's record of the poll is particularly full. It comprises an alphabetical list by polling booth, hundred, and parish. It also records occupation, plate of residence, nature and occupier of freehold, voting in 1818, and tendered, rejected and withdrawn voters and oath-takers are identified. There is an index of surnames. For the best commentary see R.G. Thorne, House of Commons 1790-1820>, II, pp.412-413, IV p.584, and III p.173. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Benjamin Watkins Leigh; William W. Henning]
Richmond: Thomas Ritchie, 1819. Full Leather. near Very Good binding. The Code of 1819 was the first codification in Virginia that organized the statutory law by subject matter (previous Codes were organized by date of enactment). The conservative jurists of the Virginia Bar preferred the old tradition of dating public acts from the date of Independence. Leigh apologizes for the new practice of statutory organization, and includes the dates in the margins. Benjamin Watkins Lee, who was a member of the House of Delegates, was appointed superintendant of the publication, assited by William Hening and William Munford. Interestingly, the Code mistakenly included the proposed Titles of Nobility Amendment to the United States Constitution as the Thirteenth Amendemnt (see Vol. I, p. 30). It was never ratified and its inclusion is an editorial error. With the binder's ticket of Frederick A. Mayo, Richmond in each volume. A most attractive set, in legal calf with morocco labels. near Very Good binding.

Scarce. Anson’s circumnavigation (1741-44) was significant in that it provided much valuable navigational information crucial to the success of Cook’s voyages in the South Seas. After a series of disasters, Anson’s initial squadron of six warships and two supply ships was reduced to just three by the time he entered the Pacific from Cape Horn. After sacking the Spanish port of Paita in Peru, he sailed across the Pacific to Macau with all remaining crew on his own ship, the Centurion. He then successfully followed the orders given to him by the Admiralty to seek out Spanish galleons laden with gold en route from Mexico to the Philippines, when he captured Nuestra Senora de Covadonga, carrying 1.3 million pieces of eight. Anson sold the gold in Macau and returned to England, arriving there in mid 1744. One of the important legacies of Anson and Walter’s narrative was the description of the breadfruit tree, the benefits of which Anson’s crew enjoyed whilst sojourning in the Ladrone Islands (Marianas). Along with Dampier’s earlier account of this fruit, Anson’s information was the main stimulus behind the Admi … [Click Below for Full Description]

The medicinal information is still cited today. While most entries fill about half a page, there are several multiple-page entries for Cannabis sativa , Cocos nucifera , Musa paradisiaca , Oryza sativa , Papaver somniferum and others. The main text is followed by a glossary of botanical terms, a short overview of the Linnaean System and separate indexes in Latin, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindustani and Bengali. The book was written by Heber Drury (1819-1872), an English colonel with the Madras light infantry stationed in Travancore. Drury compiled his descriptions from various sources, including the works of Rheede, Ainslie, Roxburgh, Wallich, Wight and Royle, but also added facts from personal observations, especially regarding plants in Travancore. The rare Tranvancore orchid Paphiopedilum drury was named after him. With owner's stamps. Title-page slightly browned, with a couple minor spots, and a few tiny smudges in text, otherwise in very good condition. Spine a bit worn along the extremities, but the binding is otherwise attractive and firm.
