ron and His Family
London - William Wright, 1819 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. An unauthorised continutation of Byron's Don Juan, most likely written by William Wright himself. After the publication of Byron's first two cantos of Don Juan, many sought to imitate and lampoon him with forgeries and continuations. This is a scarce example of Canto III likely written by William Wright, who more famously wrote 'A New Canto' in the same year. With a portrait frontispiece of Lord Byron engraved by Kennerley. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. First edition, with half title and three leaves of publisher's advertisements to rear. Printer's colophon torecto of third advertisement page. Don Juan is a satirical poem by Lord Byron. It is based on the legend of Don Juan which Byron reverses the characterisation, portraying Juan as someone easily seduced by women rather than his typical womaniser persona. Byron engages witha variation of the epic form, calling it an 'Epic Satire' himself. Upon publication of the first two cantos in 1819 the poem was criticised for its immoral content. Condition: In original brown paper boards. Externally, smart. Rubbing to the joints and extremities. Some slight bumping to extremities and the head and tail of spinealso. Handling marks to the boards and spine. Bookplate of prior owner, Walter Flinn to front pastedown and the Selbourne library stamp to verso of title page. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece has offset to title page. With biographical information loosely inserted. Pages are ge … [Click Below for Full Description]

Famiglie Celebri Italiane covers 150 families and runs to a total of 184 Dispensas which appeared from 1819 to 1883. Only the most notable of noble houses in Italy, those who were especially "famous", or distinguished in some way, were worthy of Litta's notice. His legacy is a fascinating insight into the military, political and ecclesiastical dynasties of Italy. At the time of Litta's death in 1852, only 113 Dispensa had been published. Luigi Passerini Orsini de 'Rilli, Federico Odorici and Federico Stefani collaborated to complete the series, with contributions by Francesco di Mauro of Polvica and Costantino Coda (although errors, such as the reversal of colours in coats of arms, occasionally occurred). In 1862, the rights and documents were transferred to Luciano Basadonna, who republished the whole work. Each genealogy (Tavola) is printed on double-leaf letterpress plates, versos blank (unless otherwise stated) and is inset with brief biographies of the most prominent characters of each of the family, together with other items of interest, such as famous portraits (some with tissue guards) and drawings of coins or medals. Some Dispensas include maps of territory owned or governed by the families. In some fascicles, there are also drawings of castles and other buildings, such as family monuments and tombs, many of which had already been destroyed at the time of publication; thus, these documents are also an important art historical record. The Malatesta family rose to prominence in the fourteenth century, when Malatesta da Verrucchio (died 1312) made himself … [Click Below for Full Description]

OWEN, Robert.
New Lanark & London: 1819 - 2 letters, quarto (leaf size: 227 x 185 mm). 5 pp. total. The first folded once, first page crosshatched, with integral address leaf. Loss to edge of second leaf of first letter from seal as usual, small traces of mount to address leaf of one and to verso of the other, both in excellent condition. Correspondence from Welsh social reformer Robert Owen to the politician and soon-to-be President of the Royal Society William Tooke. In the first, dated 14 November 1819, Owen speaks of the growing need for reform within the country and of his prior failure to act in full accordance with his beliefs: "to attain any great good I must act in complete unison with the principles which I have patiently advocated, which I [hold] to be true and which, if carried fairly into execution, cannot fail to give immediate and permanent relief to the working classes without injury to the higher ranks". He then explains that he has sent copies of a recently written address to the current Prime Minister, Lord Liverpool, several members of parliament and the Lord Chairman of the Committee in the hopes that it might be submitted to the government for serious consideration. In the second, he apologises for his late response to Tooke's previous letter: "my whole time from early to late has been slowly occupied with members of parliament and the House of Com. [sic] respecting two measures in which I feel a deep interest or your two kind and obliging notes should not have been so long unanswered". Créés par Didot lui-même, ces caractères venaient d'être perfectionnés sous les yeux du maître par Vibert, dans une élaboration qui occupa les années 1809 à 1819 (année de publication de notre ouvrage). OWEN, Robert.
New Lanark & London: 1819. 2 letters, quarto (leaf size: 227 x 185 mm). 5 pp. total. The first folded once, first page crosshatched, with integral address leaf. Loss to edge of second leaf of first letter from seal as usual, small traces of mount to address leaf of one and to verso of the other, both in excellent condition. Correspondence from Welsh social reformer Robert Owen to the politician and Fellow of the Royal Society William Tooke. This may refer to the Cotton Mills and Factories Act of 1819, which Owen had originally drafted … [Click Below for Full Description]

KINNAIRD, Charles Lord
London: printed by J. M'Creery. 1819. 8vo., vii + (1) + 38pp., including the half-title, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A very good copy inscribed in ink on the half-title, 'With Mr. Kinnaird's compts to Mr. Ferguson No 2 Clarges St.'>. First edition. Two letters from Kinnaird to Stuart, Stuart's off-hand response to the first, and a letter from Wellington to Lord Clancarty, collected and published by Kinnaird as an angry rebuttal of the 'despicable outrage' which linked him with an assassination attempt on the Duke of Wellington. It was a notorious affair which reflected ill on all concerned: Byron (Don Juan, Canto IX) called Wellington's behaviour 'shabby', not least, perhaps, because Kinnaird's younger brother Douglas was among Byron's closest friends. The presentation inscription on this copy is presumably in the hand of Douglas Kinnaird.

PAINE, Thomas.
London: printed & published by R. Carlile, 1819. 3 works bound together in one volume, pp. 8; 10; [ii], 196; the first two works small octavo (approx. 195 × 122 mm), the third, with uncut edges, taller octavo (226 × 138 mm). Later mottled half calf, spine lettered gilt, marbled sides. Excellent copies. A2 and A3 misbound out of order in first work. First editions of the first two listed works, rare in commerce. No copy of the first work appears in auction records since 1975 and only one copy of the second. The Rights of Man brought Paine enormous popularity in France, and eventually election to the National Convention, the central governing agency of the First Republic. But Paine spoke little or no French and had to rely on a fellow deputy translating for him, and he had not grasped how dramatically the course of the revolution had changed. French adulation turned into anger when Paine opposed the execution of Louis XVI. After a bare majority had voted for death, Paine sought a reprieve by pressing for detention, and subsequent banishment to America, rather than execution (with Bancal reading a translation of his speech). Marat shouted him down on the grounds that he was a Quaker, and further interruptions by Marat and Thuriot challenged the accuracy of the translation being read and wrecked any chance of his plea finding support. In December 1793 he was arrested. Robespierre himself wrote out the order of execution, but Paine escaped this fate through an error of his captors and was released from prison the next year after the end of the Terror. The third work in this Samm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Count Pompeo Litta (1781 - 1852)
Dispensa 157. Mocenigo di Venezia. Cavaliere Federigo Stefani. Parte I. 1868. Contents: Tavola I - V, with colo … [Click Below for Full Description]
