MACMICHAEL, William
John Murray, London, 1819. Complete with frontispiece and 5 full page plates. Quarter calf with plain paper boards, gilt stamping on spine; some foxing to preliminary leaves, plates and title, otherwise clean interior. With the stamp of Sion College Library on verso of title. First edition. This rare travel account of Russia, Turkey, and the surrounding region includes wonderful images drawn by the author himself. He arrived in Russia during a frozen winter; the frontispiece even shows women in Kiev washing clothes in a hole made in the ice. His descriptions of Moscow are particularly interesting for his observations of the great reconstruction following the fire of 1812 (coinciding with Napoleon's arrival), which decimated most of the city. Many of the iconic neoclassical buildings that come to mind - the Kremlin and the Bolshoi to name a few - were built during this period. "Of the ruins of a city that had contained a population of between three and four hundred thousand souls, many vestiges were still visible, but the great advances made towards obliterating the traces of disaster, were almost inconceivable." The author's route also took him into Romania, where he provides a wonderful description of the Court at Bucharest, then on to Syria and the Holy Land, descriptions and anecdotes of which he includes in this volume. Of particular interest is a short description given by MacMichael of the value of Russian and Turkish money preceding the commencement of his accounts.MacMichael (1784-1839) was an English physician and scholar. He was elected a Radcliffe traveling fello … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

HUMPHREY, Heman:
Boston, Samuel T. Armstrong, 1819. Octavo (207 x 129 mm), 40, xvi pages. Disbound neatly, but with traces of old leather on the spine; short tear to the first two, and the last, leaves expertly sealed; paper a little offset and discoloured, with trifling signs of handling; an excellent copy. Hill 852: 'This rare pamphlet may be cited as the inception of the Christian missionary movement in Hawaii. [Bingham and Thurston] ... were the first two foreign missionaries to land on Hawaii. Their influence, coming immediately upon the death of Kamehameha in 1819, was to be greater than that of the whalers, traders, and planters who also changed Hawaiian culture.... This most important sermon was an enthusiastic charge to the missionaries and set the tone of missionary policy towards Hawaii for years to come'. The sermon (pages [3]-32) is followed by 'The Charge, by the Rev. David L. Perry' (pages [33]-37), 'Right Hand of Fellowship, by the Rev. Noah Porter' (pages [38]-40), and 16 pages of 'Instructions from the Prudential Committee of the American Board of Foreign Missions' (dated 15 October 1819). The final page lists the members of the pioneering party, which includes the 'Native Teachers John Honooree, Native of Owhyhee. Thomas Hopoo [ditto]. William Tennooe, Native of Atooi', as well as George Tamoree, 'son of Tamoree, king of Atooi and Oneeheow, two of the Sandwich Islands, - who has been educated with the other Native Youths, at the Foreign Mission School, Cornwall', Connecticut.

Ross, John
London: John Murray, 1819. [4],xxxix,[1],252,[2],cxliv pp., plus three folding maps, ten folding plates (four colored), eighteen single-page plates (ten colored), and errata slip. Quarto. Contemporary polished calf, gilt and blind tooled. Spine rebacked, gilt and blind tooled, gilt leather labels. Corners bumped, boards slightly scuffed. Lightly foxed, some offsetting from plates. Very Good. One of the pioneering voyages of high Arctic discovery. Led by Sir John Ross, the officers included future Arctic greats William Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine. Ross sailed up Davis Strait and westward into Lancaster Sound, seeking a northwest passage. A mirage deceived him into believing the end of the Sound was blocked by a high range of mountains, despite the disbelief of his colleagues. The expedition returned to England in 1818 with much fanfare and Ross was promoted, but the false conclusions were widely challenged when this account was published, and involved Ross in lifelong controversy. Aside from its incorrect geographical conclusions, however, the expedition bore important fruits in encouraging Arctic exploration, training future leaders, and compiling accurate geographical and ethnological data. This copy is particularly notable for the beautiful extensive contemporary coloring of the plates. One of the most remarkable plates in the book shows the encounter of Ross and his officers- decked out in full Royal Navy dress uniform- encountering the Eskimos in Lancaster Sound. The image was created by John Stackhouse, who was serving as the native interpreter for the e … [Click Below for Full Description]
