John Baron
Longman, Hurst, Rees, Constable and Co Edinburgh 1819 - A 200 year old medical classic on tuberculous effusions of the peritoneum and pleura by John Baron. First modern attempt towards the cause on the subject. 5 plates with wood cut engravings 305 pages in a leather bound volume. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Constable and Co Edinburgh John Baron came to know Jenner about 1809, and was designated as Jenner's biographer by the executors. Copious biographical materials were put into his hands soon after Jenner's death in 1823; but the ‘Life of Edward Jenner, M.D., LL.D., F.R.S., with Illustrations of his Doctrine and Selections from his Correspondence,’ in two vols. with two portraits, was not completed until 1838. The book includes a history of the vaccination movement. Baron's attitude to Jenner was that of the unquestioning disciple. In 1839 he prepared a report on vaccination for the Provincial Medical and Surgical Association, ahead of legislation; it was attacked for uncritical acceptance of Jenner's view of the permanence of protection given by vaccinations. Baron's use of statistical evidence was also questioned, by George Gregory. Baron also published three books on tubercles: ‘Enquiry illustrating the Nature of Tuberculated Accretions of Serous Membranes,’ &c., plates, London, 1819; ‘Illustrations of the Enquiry respecting Tuberculous Diseases,’ plates, London, 1822; and ‘Delineations of the Changes of Structure which occur in Man and some of the Inferior Animals,’ plates, London, 1828. His services to pathology gained Baron admissio … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLIDORI, John William.
London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones 1819 - 8vo., pp. xxv, [26]-84; complete with the half-title; the occasional mark, but a very good copy, entirely uncut; disbound.First edition: the first published vampire story in the English language, written by Byron's doctor in reaction to the dominating presence of his employer. It was a product of the same ghost-story competition which resulted in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva in the summer of 1816. 'The historical and mythological importance of Polidori's The Vampyre lies in its drastic correction of the folklore's shortcomings, and especially in his elevation of the nosferatu (undead) to the dignity of high social rank. By removing the bloodsucker from the village cowshed to the salons of high society and the resorts of international tourism, he set in motion the glorious career of the aristocratic vampire, a figure later incarnated in J. M. Rymer's interminable Varney the Vampire (1847), and of course as Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1872)' (Robert Morrison). This is Viets's issue IV, published by Sherwood, Neely and Jones, without the spurious attribution to Byron on the title and half-title, and with gathering A reset in 23 lines rather than 24.Henry R. COLLECTIF
A Grenoble, De l'Imprimerie de David, 1819-1820. Parution complète en 8 vol. in-8 br. (22 x 14 cm), 230 pp. en continu + 236 pp. en continu + 186 pp. en continu. Bonne condition. Byron, George Gordon Noel, Lord
London: John Murray, 1819. First edition. Wraps. Very good. 8vo. 72pp. Early, but we think not original, marbled paper wraps, printed title on the upper wrap. Second state, with the imprint on the reverse of p. 71. Occasional light foxing else in very good condition. 'Mazeppa' is followed by the 'Fragment', also known as 'Fragment of a Novel', an unfinished horror story that is one of the first in English to feature a vampire theme. This is Lord Byron's contribution from that dark and stormy night in Switzerland that gave us Shelley's 'Frankenstein' and Polidori's 'Vampyre'. Polidori based his story on Byron's 'Fragment'. Randolph, p. 70; Wise I, p. 132.

In the same year he was promoted to 'Unterlieutenant' in the Warasdiner Sanct-Georger Regiment. In 1809 he became Oberlieutenant in the General Quartiermeisterstaabe. With this staff he took part in the famous battle of the Zermania bridge in the Zermania valley, the patent explains that after the unfortunate military defeat in the Zermania valley he was the only officer present who lead the troops into battle near Grachacz and reunited lost parts of the army in doing so. In 1813 he became Hauptmann and was part of the second reserve armycorps of Freiherr von Hiller of the brigade of General Rebrovich. It was in this capacity that his ability to lead in battle became apparent. In 1813-1814 he fought in 12 battles that were part of the campaign.
