HOARE, Sir Richard Colt.
London, J. Mawman,~ 1819. Two volumes, 8vo. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, rebacked with contrasting lettering-pieces to spines; pp. [iii]-xiii, [3], 395; [iv], 358, [6], folding map of Sicily, bound without half-titles; a little browned, otherwise a very clean copy; ownership inscriptions of Jane Panton to titles. Richard Colt was a wealthy landowner and indefatigable Continental traveler, artist and antiquary. He had spent a good deal of the second half of the 1780s in Europe. 'After a brief return home Colt Hoare resumed his travels in 1788, 'no longer as a tourist but as a systematic antiquarian ... quitting ... the road for the path, the capital for the provinces' (R. C. Hoare, A Classical Tour through Italy and Sicily, 1819, x). He passed through the Netherlands, Germany, Venice, and Florence and finally settled in Siena. He sought to locate the major sites of the Etruscan civilization, then explored the Appian way with his sketchbook and returned south in order to visit the recently publicized Greek ruins at Paestum and those in Sicily. His romantic response to Italy was at once tempered and inflamed by a close interest in the classical authors, who turned his attraction into a passion; virtually nothing he saw was without resonance from a documented source' (ODNB).

Full account of the several trials connected with this famous Massachusetts case, by one of the accused. Daniel Webster served as one of the defense attorneys shortly after his return to private practice following his two terms in Congress. The respected and well-connected Major Goodridge's accusation of robbery against the witless, low-life Kenniston brothers was supported by popular sentiment, until Webster began his defence, which meticulously unraveled the Major's story and succeeded in gaining the Kenniston's acquittal. The trial was an early landmark in Webster's legal career, and his final address to the jury, first printed here, is considered a classic of Webster's or … [Click Below for Full Description]
