COOPER, Astley & Benjamin TRAVERS:
London: Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown/ Edinburgh: A. Constable/ Glasgow: Smith & Son/ Dublin: Hodges & McArthur, 1819. First Edition. 2 leaves, 239, [1] pp; 21 plates (some double-page). Contemporary (original?) cloth-backed boards. Spine lacking, somewhat worn but contents clean, else Very Good. Royal College of Surgeons Ireland ink stamp to title page. INSCRIBED: 'With the author's kind regards.' I'm not certain whose hand the inscription is in, I have included a photo of a letter by Cooper (it doesn't belong to me so is not being offered with the book) for the sake of comparison. Vol. II contains Cooper's essay on apertures in the urethra, in which he gave probably the earliest report of the transplantation of scrotal skin (see Zeis & Patterson 2160-61, p. 255). Garrison-Morton 2941 & 5587: 'In 1817 Cooper ligated the abdominal aorta. The patient died next day, but examination showed that his aorta was so diseased that he could never have recovered, while the ligation was so well performed that with a less degree of aortic disease the man would probably have survived' (G-M 2941). RICARDO, D.
London, John Murray, 1819. viii, 550, (4, advertisments) pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, corners, gilt lettering to spine, extremities shaved, corners bumped, spine rubbed, joints weak, slightly damaged at foot of spine. Kress C.401; Goldsmiths 22322; not in Einaudi; Carpenter XXXVII, (2); McCulloch pp. 16-17; PMM 277 (for the first edition); Mattioli 3016. Second edition, printed in an edition of 1000 copies only, first published in 1817. One of the major classics in the history of political economy. By 1817 Ricardo had become a respected authority through the publication of a number of pamphlets. Urged by James Mill and others to set down a systematic account of his theories, he produced this book. It is based on older and accepted theories of relations between rent, labour and production, but a new emphasis was provided by his theory of distribution. His exact mathematical approach and deductive methods have influenced succeeding generations of economists, especially in the fields of currency and banking. 'Ricardo was, in a sense, the first "scientific economist"' (PMM, p. 168).'The fundamental ground-work of the Principles is based on the theory that, given free competition in trade, the exchange value of commodities will be determined by the amount of labour expended in production: not a wholly original thesis, nor one capable of absolute expression, but one which was given new force by the theory of distribution with which Ricardo reinforced it' (PMM). - Title-page with a short tear in outer blank margin, internally a fresh copy.

Görres, J.
Zu I: Goed. Jhdt.).- Zu II: Goed VI, 205, 29 WG 25.- Erste Ausgabe .- Vereinzelt fleckig, stellenweise schwacher Feuchtrand.

Millard Fillmore
1819. “I was just an apprentice with little hope of being anything but a mechanic, yet fortune has given me what I never anticipated in worldly honors or dared to hope for...My life, upon the whole, has been a very happy one...and I hope and trust in an Almighty and Merciful God for further blessings in time and in eternity.  I hope to be ready to go whenever he may call.  I feel that my work here is done...” Fillmore was not born to privilege, and though promising had to work his way up from the bottom rung. His father apprenticed him to a cloth maker at age fourteen to learn that trade. He struggled to obtain an education living on what was then the frontier. In 1819 he got a break and began to clerk for a New York judge, under whom he began to study law. After buying out his apprenticeship, Fillmore moved to Buffalo, where he continued his studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1823 and began his law practice. He soon earned a reputation as a good attorney and reliable man. In 1828, Fillmore was elected to the New York State Assembly, and in 1832 he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1843. After leaving Congress, Fillmore was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor of New York in 1844. He next won office as New York State Comptroller, and was in office from 1848 to 1849. As comptroller, he revised New York's banking system, making it a model for the future U.S. Banking System. Luck smiled on Fillmore in 1848. At the Whig national convention, the nomination of Louisiana slaveowner Gen. Zachary Taylor for president ang … [Click Below for Full Description]
